It's hard for me to pass up any kind of poll-type question like this. However, it's even harder for me to pick just one. Rather than pick just one favorite, I'll say that right now, for me, the top tier of Joni albums consists of _For the Roses_, _Hejira_, _The Hissing of Summer Lawns_ and _Turbulent Indigo_. Of course, this is subject to change at any time, and certainly will once I'm able to replace my copy of _Blue_ (I've already been to two stores, neither of which were sufficiently Joni stocked). That's cool -- I can definitely understand that. For me, it was probably less distracting/disorienting alternating between the two performers, since I was familiar with both of their material, but for others, the transitions back and forth must have seemed awkward. Maybe it would be easier if they found another way to structure the show, whereby the performers still get the same amount of time in the spotlight as before, but without the flow of the show being broken up so much. (Maybe a short set of all Aimee, Penn's entire set, then a longer set of Aimee to finish the show?) I think you did sum up in just two words part of what I like about Penn's music so much -- "very Beatle-ish"! No wonder it's hard for me to resist... I can't find him with a Yahoo search. Anyway, I thought that Rolling Stone busted Joni and David Geffen (or Elliot Roberts) said something like "look, it's a composite. She changed his name. I know he's suing us. But we can't pay *everyone* who doesn't like us." Anyway, my favorite Joni album is which ever one is playing at the moment. There are only 3 out of 21 that I *don't* play very often. Lama np: "The Last Waltz" featuring Muddy Waters- (hey, a blues man!) and some chick folk-singer with a guitar. (I'm kidding Joni! Aimee doesn't seem to perform much from _Whatever_ these days, which is a shame -- it's an almost flawless record, one I never tire of. "I Should've Known" is an incredible song. My own favorite part is the entire verse that leads up to and ends with "... but you still live in those days, when I'd stay awake just to watch you sleeping." I agree with what you said about "Fifty Years After the Fair" -- that song has entranced me from the first listen. There's some elusive quality to it that I can't put my finger on that makes it so special and undefinable. And I absolutely love Roger McGuinn's 12-string guitar on it. >i thought "calling it quits" came alive in the concert, >especially the "get tough girls" line that she did >a cappella...and that one was never a super favorite of >mine. um, what else? the crowd loved "deathly" and >"one"...but "it's not safe" is still ringing in my mind... >why do i think if joni's heard that song she loves it? You're at least two up on me -- I still haven't heard "Deathly" live, and it's one of my favorites (the "You're on your honor" verse never fails to give me goosebumps). I also haven't heard "Calling it Quits" live, but I always felt like it would work better in live performance than it does on the album. I like the idea of Joni hearing "It's Not Safe" -- she's spent so much of her career wanting to "do something good," when seemingly everyone else wants something unchallenging and would rather "choose swine over pearls." I know the song is interpreted by a lot of people as being angry, but to me it comes across more as a mix of frustration and resignation, wondering why you'd even want to continue any further when no one seems to understand, yet never allowing yourself to give in. I think Joni could at least appreciate the honesty and content of the lyrics, if not the music itself. >and i know i was kind of harsh on michael: first of all, >he's a total babe (yowzers, though, i think his jeans were >tighter than hers!) -- and i enjoyed his songs. i don't have >any of his stuff but i'm going to look into the one that >you mentioned. there was one song he did, kind of bluesy, >or country, something about "you look good from the >freeway" (?) that i really liked. Yeah, I have to wonder about Michael's jeans myself. I remember reading in an article a year ago a comment by Aimee saying how Michael really wanted them to have children -- I think he'd better get some relaxed-fit jeans first, or they might run into problems! ;) The song you liked is called "Brave New World," and it's from Michael's first album, _March_, which also includes his best-known song, "No Myth" ("What if I were Romeo in black jeans? What if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth..."). Unfortunately, that album has been out-of-print for a while now, but if you're a member of Columbia House, they still seem to carry it. Apart from that, you could always check the used or cut-out bins or try eBay or SecondSpin.com -- copies have been known to turn up periodically. Of course, there's also Napster, if none of those other options pan out for you. It's a great album, though, so it's worth getting the entire thing, not just that one song in particular. >as for the comic...i'm still blllleeeccchhh on him. banter-- >who cares about banter???--ira and georgia barely said two >words at that amazing irving plaza show i saw a couple of >months ago (yep, i'm a huge YL fan and now "and then the >nothing" is never off the player) and they were captivating. >plus they did an achingly beautiful, feedback drenched >version of "somebody's baby" by jackson browne (!). i'm >not kidding! I am working on making this site a real resource as a supplement to the official Joni Mitchell web site. I do not want to replace it,since the official site is really great, I just want to put things into mine that may not fit the official site. So if there are rare songs by Joni Mitchell you want listed, lyrics, videos let me know. This past month I had the chance to hear for the first time, Eastern Rain. WInter Lady, Born to Take the Highway, Just like Me, Brandy Eyes, Blue on Blue and they are great songs! IT is really too bad they never made into into a box set. One song I have been looking for is Day by Day, her first song, and Hunter, the song that did not make the cut on Blue. Again, any obscure information, reviews, what ever, let me know. Also anything I can provide, let me know. The group has been really great about providing material. Right now my joni list includes all her recorded albums to the present, Shadows and Light on video and on DVD painting with words and music. Sadly, Shadows and Light on video is copy protected. If you can get a copy, do. It includes her take on songs not included on the record or cd. Also, Words and Music on DVD is excellent. It shows Joni Mitchell at her Jazz best with great backing. I may say some negative things from time to time, but there's a difference between saying something in a discussion forum and creating a website that can be accessed by anyone. As there are so many great musicians on the list, many with encyclopedic knowledge of guitarists, I'm sure people will have heard of Isaac Guillory, who died a couple of days ago. I only saw him play once, and wasn't familiar with the bands he'd played with, the wonderfully named Pacific Eardrum being the main one. My God was he good, though. One of the most fluent acoustic guitarists I ever saw, with an ability to play a bass riff, lead lines and little counter melodies, all at the same time and occasionally at breakneck speed. Despite his great virtuosity, he never seemed showy, coming across as a man of heart, humour and humility, an impression borne out by the Live album, which I listened to earlier this evening, for the first time in years. It confirms that he was also a pretty good singer and songwriter, with the first four songs on the album being especially fine, three originals (one an instrumental) and Hoagy Carmichael's Baltimore Oriole. Not much more I can say, except if you see the Live album in a second-hand shop, don't hesitate.
