Another thing.. some people can say that an Artists work doesnt "speak" for a generation anymore.. i.e. People said that about Dylan in the 80's and eventhough some of his work was a bit mediocre, songs like "Jokerman" and "Union Sundown" say more about what was going on at that time than alot of other music.. and I feel the same for Joni.. with TI. But, also, It is scary, what people can get away with and what people are doing to others out there. blair F. > > >She was inspired to think about Justice and then > write the song after >seeing a license plate that said "Just Ice"...the cadillac > in > the first >line of the tune.> > > I know the story, I just think it's a silly line -a >failed wordplay to express a > thought that's not only unoriginal but >untrue. > >It seems to me in this song that she is asking a question, "Is Justice just >ice? He removed details and replaced with generalized description of his theory of 2000-yr cycles of history: "In those cycles, each successive civilization has values that are diametrically opposed to those of the preceding civilization, and the onset of each new civilization is announced by the sudden manifestation of an event, such as Helen of Troy or Christ" (O'Donnell 83). Yeats thought that after 20 centuries of Christianity, the world could expect a return to paganism, which would be "utterly alien and therefore shocking" (83). (VLJC) My four-year-old boy is a Batman fanatic and has found at the library compilations of the original Batman cartoons from the 30's and 40's drawn by the originator, Bob Kane. Today we were reading an episode and look at the language I found ... "I do not wish to seem ungrateful ..." (For the Roses: "I know I seem ungrateful/with my teeth sunk in the hand ...") "To the victor belong the spoils .." (Number One: "To the victor go the spoils/honey, did you win or lose?") "Cohorts in crime, Weasel and his men gain entrance to the hospital singly and in pairs ..." (Song for Sharon: "Now there are 29 skaters on Wollman rink/circling singly and in pairs ...") Just seemed funny how the little turns of phrase seem to parallel with some of Joni's choices. I know she's said she was kind of a good-time Charlie in grade school and read lots of comic books ... hmmm. By the way, there is some language that, of course, is quite dated (like I have to explain to my son what war bonds are that they mention in some of the comics) but one thing I haven't figured out. Whenever they have a newspaper boy calling out the headlines to the passersby, he says, "Wuxtry! Wuxtry! Joker still alive! Wuxtry!" What does "wuxtry" mean and/or what is its origin? I don't find it in my dictionary and neither of my parents who would know are with us anymore. Just curious. Waiting to hear from you resourceful librarians ... (and kakki!) i was waiting to see what you'd have to say about my aimee mann review, since i know we've written about her before. unfortunately, she didn't do "ghost world" (killer song) OR "4th of july" (which i think i remember elvis put as one of his "best records of all time" in that vanity fair piece). i would have LOVED to hear more stuff from "whatever"...like "should've known" (i can't dig her voice enough on the line "but i was busy talking on the PHONE") or "mr. harris" (sentimental fave) or "fifty years after the fair" (the lyrics here are haunting, strange, and wonderful all at once). and if she'd played "ray" or "stupid thing" from "i'm with stupid" i might have keeled over with sheer delight. oh well. i thought "calling it quits" came alive in the concert, especially the "get tough girls" line that she did a cappella...and that one was never a super favorite of mine. um, what else? the crowd loved "deathly" and "one"...but "it's not safe" is still ringing in my mind... why do i think if joni's heard that song she loves it? and i know i was kind of harsh on michael: first of all, he's a total babe (yowzers, though, i think his jeans were tighter than hers!) -- and i enjoyed his songs. i don't have any of his stuff but i'm going to look into the one that you mentioned. there was one song he did, kind of bluesy, or country, something about "you look good from the freeway" (?) that i really liked. as for the comic...i'm still blllleeeccchhh on him. banter-- who cares about banter???--ira and georgia barely said two words at that amazing irving plaza show i saw a couple of months ago (yep, i'm a huge YL fan and now "and then the nothing" is never off the player) and they were captivating. plus they did an achingly beautiful, feedback drenched version of "somebody's baby" by jackson browne (!). i'm not kidding! Sleep deprivation aside...it was an amazing amount of activites crammed into a relatively few short hours. Friday night in LA seemed like old times, cruising Hollywood looking for good food, good music and familiar faces. The restaurant in Laurel Canyon and the Laurel Canyon store were great; little pieces of the 60's but living and breathing (unlike many of the celebrities). The "morrison house" has been verified (don't ask a librarian unless you REALLY want an answer). The realtor was very appreciative after I found the website verifying that Morriaon HAD lived at 8021 Rothdell Trail and wrote "Love Street" there. But, future LA fests will have to find another site, as $599,000 is a tad out of my price range. The house is 1700-1800 square feet, 2 story, 2 bedroom, 2 bath and NO GARAGE. Even used to SF real estate, that seems a tad over my budget. But the Les Deux was a great place (they even validate parking) and the music was an odd amalgamation of the Eurythmics, Joni and others, everything worked together. The bar tender pours a mean drink; my "bourbon straight" was Jack Daniels poured to a count of 7....it lasted me all evening. On Sat morning, we got started to Anaheim (just missing the Inaugeration on tv,shucks)and made the Taylor Guitar mini-concert with Jeff Pevar, Artie Traum and Tony Levin. Great music and people watching, Paz and Kakki had saved me a seat while I was parkingthe car (an really So Cal parking experience, there's always a place to put your car even if it's 5 miles away.) The NAMM show has to be experienced to be believed; sensory overload. Famous and no- so famous people mingling. Meeting Kete Bennett and Jeff was absolutely wonderful. Seeing Steve Dulson again and knowing he and Michelle would be at the party was great. The All Star guitar show was....awesome....Keanu was surprisingly good (and of course he looked great) but the highlight was the set by Marco Mendoza. A rare unique talent, and a great capper to the evening. Then off to the first Joni-fest in the hospitality suite at the (otherwise) unpreposing Conestoga Hotel. nikki, Alison, Barb (a real trooper) and Paz and Julius were gracious hosts. But 3:00am is my bedtime and we went back to the Ramada. The sunday night party loomed and Kakki and I sped (through heavy traffic) back the downtown building. Phyllis brought a honey=baked ham and condiments, the Dulsons brought cookies, cheesecakes were made to celebrate Alison's birthday, and the liquid refreshments included great wines (Fess Parker's from the Dulsons was memorable), martinis, and a lavish bar. Scott from the leeshore list and i shared memories of San Diego before he did some wicked CSN tunes. Clark managed to make it in spite of business obligations and his Boys on the Sand is just an amazing song done acoutically. Kate and Jeff contribtions were so special and I amn sorry we missed her Taylor guitar mini-concert. (BUY HER CD)AND CLARK'S) I did manage to crash for about a hour before my 6:30 am flight, but was roused by the sound of one of the recorded songs , bearing the unfortunate addition of MY VOICE. It seems that Kakki, in her very KAKKIst way, managed to both record my voice (it can be edited out, I hope ) and get a photo of me. Believe me,this is highly unusual as I can dodge cameras better than Alec Baldwin. Altogether, a stellar weekend in the City of the Angels and with the best people to party with. They both lived in Laurel Canyon at the same time, and she had dated a member of the Mothers of Invention. Someone also mentioned earlier last year about in the early 70's Joni got up on stage and read a Poem "Penelope"... or somethign like that about a woman wanting to fuck the sea. To me it's just a series of observations of things that are royally fucked up in modern life. The first verse does address justice and questions whether there is such a thing anymore but I don't think she's trying to draw some direct line of causality from that to gas leaks and oil spills. Nor do I think she's saying that AIDS is the result of greed and lust. She's merely observing that in the world today there is corruption and greed and it can and does pervert justice, that gas leaks pollute the air, oil spills muck up our oceans and that Madison Avenue shoves sex in our faces to sell products but fails to mention that you'd better play safe if you value your life. (I must admit however, that the blanket statement 'sex kills' has always bothered me. So after rereading your post, Kakki, I must admit that there may be something in what you say.) She continues, talking about health care and how the cure can sometimes kill you while the price keeps getting more & more ridiculously astronomical. Pettiness clogs the courts with lawsuits and road rage makes people driving the freeways into psychos. Rapists stalk women any place at any time & kids in schoolrooms mow down their classmates with guns. Not one specific thing. Many, many things that Joni sees as terribly wrong with modern life. As she sees it, 'the balance is undone' and of course that balance between positive & negative is one of her ongoing, pervasive themes. She also seems to have a pretty healthy respect for those 'Indian chiefs with their old beliefs.' Of course, there are many good things in our day to day lives and Sex Kills is not representative of those. 'Taming the Tiger' gave us quite a few of those but so many seem to dismiss that record. I count it as one of her best but that's another subject entirely.
