I think that she does not mean literally that all these various entities should be *required* to be accountable for all the world's ills. Rather, she is parodying the tendency to always find a scapecoat to blame, rather than doing the hard work of seeking and searching for the real reasons and causes behind the ills and injustices of our existence. Quickly finding and exposing the "scapegoat" can make the masses feel that "justice" has been achieved, but it is really only an illusion. Think of certain entities that promote the simplistic concept that "sex kills," and "sex sells everything." It's a reductive chant (the first rule of Propaganda 101) that serves the purpose of giving sex a bad name, portraying it as evil. It would be a bleat of those who would rather use something like AIDS as a scare-mongering example to further their own unrelated ulterior motives, rather than to address the real facts of the issue. Her going from the "gas leaks and the oil spills" to "sex kills everything" is not logical if you take it literally. But if you take it in an absurd context, the larger point of how ridiculously the substitution of scapegoating for justice has become in our world it becomes clear, i.e., "sex caused the oil spills, too." Yeah, right. By the way, L.A. is NOT very polluted, at least not for the past several years ;-) Five years ago, our pollution levels were at the same level as in 1957, when there was much less industry and several million less people living here. We've got it under control. Interestingly, L.A. has always had smog since the prehistoric days from all the desert dust, natural wildfires and the inversion layer that occurs here. I think the name ancient Chumash Indian name "Malibu" also translates to something like "valley of smog,", too. There are a lot of songs taken directly from the official album release, but in many other cases, they've included an "alternate take" of a song, and included notes on why it wasn't chosen over the official release. For example, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. They recorded several versions of this song, but went with the first, because after a few takes, it (apparently) started to sound too "structured". I love this idea - including alternate takes of their most popular songs, which we otherwise would never get to hear. If Joni did this, I'm sure it wouldn't detract too much from back-catalogue sales, since people would probably still want to hear the offiicially released versions. Some of the CSN tracks on the boxed-set are quite different to what was actually released, and it's great having the notes on each track which in some cases give a nice potted history of the development of the song. Back at work after a lovely mini-vacation, and I thought I would post my mini-fest report. Julius and Barb (my best friend) and I landed in the airport on Thursday night, then drove to Santa Monica. The next day, we picked up Paz and Nikki at LAX, and we were off to lovely downtown Anaheim for the NAMM convention, where we got some passes and went in. It was like walking into some sort of heavy metal hell, but since I am from the wrong side of the tracks, I fit right in. Long hair, much piercing, a large amount of black hair dye, you get the picture. Julius and Barb and I went in through the back, where we were lucky enough to see Ted Nugent and his entourage pulling up to go in to the show. This was just one of the many fabulous celebrity sightings we encountered, along with CC Deville from Poison, the Misfits signing autographs, Steve Vai (he touched Barb's arm!) and so on. We hung out at the show, then later we all went back to our hotel suite and played guitar and had cocktails and relaxed. The next day, it was a whirlwind trip to Disneyland for my b-day, which was everything I ever expected. We had a great time there, while the rest of the folks hung out at the NAMM show. Later that night, we went to the All-Star Guitar show, which included a performance by Dogstar, Keannu Reeves' band. THey were surprisingly quite good! Keanu actually can play the bass, not to mention he's FOXY! After that I got to hear not only the fabulously talented Kate Bennett play, but also her very talented husband Jeff, quite a musician in his own right. We had alot of fun just hanging out in the JMDL suite and hammering out songs. Sunday was definitely the kicker, though. We arrived at Kakki's in LA a little late, after getting turned around (Paz and I went a few rounds, he learned the meaning of "cat scratch fever" for sure). Finally our fantastic driver Julius delivered us to the door of much music, food and beverage. It was amazing to hear a dulcimer live, it really is an incredible instrument. Steve Dulson and his wife Michelle are truly delightful people. Coyote Rick became an instant pal (yes, it was us that left that mystery message). He is not only funny, but also handsome as I am sure you have seen in the pics. It was great to finally meet Kate after emails and listening to her cd. Phyllis, who happily sang from the back of the room but wouldn't get in front of the mike...it was great to meet you! Darice made me a yummy cheesecake for my birthday, so thank you Darice. It was great to meet you, too. Clark, after hearing everyone rave about your CD it was so nice to finally hear your stuff! I enjoyed your performance. THE MUSIC! Kakki's friend Scott really added to the mix, and we messed around with a lot of CSN stuff. it was all great, except for the songs I tried to play guitar on. ;-) i'm way outta practice. I have to go home now. I hope i didn't forget anyone! Anyone considering coming to New York for Lahm's suggested get together, please don't hesitate. It really is just as FANTASTIC as it sounds. Yeah, right. I never thought she was necessarily pointing a finger at any one institution or group of people in this song. To me it's just a series of observations of things that are royally fucked up in modern life. The first verse does address justice and questions whether there is such a thing anymore but I don't think she's trying to draw some direct line of causality from that to gas leaks and oil spills. Nor do I think she's saying that AIDS is the result of greed and lust. She's merely observing that in the world today there is corruption and greed and it can and does pervert justice, that gas leaks pollute the air, oil spills muck up our oceans and that Madison Avenue shoves sex in our faces to sell products but fails to mention that you'd better play safe if you value your life. (I must admit however, that the blanket statement 'sex kills' has always bothered me. So after rereading your post, Kakki, I must admit that there may be something in what you say.) She continues, talking about health care and how the cure can sometimes kill you while the price keeps getting more & more ridiculously astronomical. Pettiness clogs the courts with lawsuits and road rage makes people driving the freeways into psychos. Rapists stalk women any place at any time & kids in schoolrooms mow down their classmates with guns. Not one specific thing. Many, many things that Joni sees as terribly wrong with modern life. As she sees it, 'the balance is undone' and of course that balance between positive & negative is one of her ongoing, pervasive themes. She also seems to have a pretty healthy respect for those 'Indian chiefs with their old beliefs.' Of course, there are many good things in our day to day lives and Sex Kills is not representative of those. 'Taming the Tiger' gave us quite a few of those but so many seem to dismiss that record. I count it as one of her best but that's another subject entirely. About 2 weeks ago I ventured out to CA, with minor plane problems getting there, I arrived in Sacramento where MG picked me up. It was way past her bedtime (9:30) but she was a trooper...lol. So I stayed there for a few days and it was great to see her again(even though I had to remind her to shut off the vacuum at 4am) and meet her lovely children:-) So that Sat. night Marcel and Russ came over and a few other people and marcel entertained us with his beautiful renditions of Joni songs and a few others. Russ is a really nice guy and brought us all Joni shirts. I enjoyed meeting both gentlemen. Marcel's garret Morris impression for the hearing impaired was priceless...lol... I even got to talk to Marian from Vienna for the 1st time she is soooo sweet thanks for calling! And Wally...what can I say...I am sorry I missed out on talking to you! Missed your salaciousness! So then my friend Faith showed me around San Francisco and Berkeley which was cool...I saw a lot of sights and one of the cool things was going to Vestuvio(I think that's how it's spelled) where all the beat poets used to hang out. So then back to MG's where we celebrated her daughter's birthday. Then she had the task of waking me up for my Friday 9:30AM flight! She kept yelling at me..."Nikki pack your bags"..."Nikki stop talking to me"..."Nikki brush your teeth"...etc. But I made it. Then I met up with Paz in LA and we waited for Julius, Alison and her friend Barb (did we make her a Joni fan yet?) to pick us up. Then off to NAMM! We had passes and it was like nothing I'd ever seen before...so much equipment in one place! We had to control Alison with Ted Nuggent. lol. We played music in the suite. The next day back to NAMM where I got to see Kakki again! And I also got to meet the incredibly sweet Kate Bennet and her hubby, Steve Dulson, and Darice. More music followed after a great show. It was great to finally hear Kate play and get her CD. Martinnis were aplenty. I always love fests! So then Sunday Paz, Julius, Alison, Barb and I went to Venice Beach which was really cool. We danced with the drum circle a little on the beach and walked the boardwalk. I love the beach. Then after a slight detour we made our way to Kakki's! This was like the grand finale to an already incredible vacation! Thank you so much Kakki for inviting us into your home. Paz played his VG8 which is always a treat (Kate and I tried too, it's not as easy as it looks...lol). It was so great playing and singing with everyone, I truly look forward to these moments. Alison and Kakki thanks for the vocal help! Maybe next fest we can perform Carry? I am still surprised I got up and played in front of people w/o passing out!!!!!!!!!! What a supportive and extremely kind audience. There were some great music moments for sure. Thanks to everyone who played and lended a voice. I met Phyllis for the 1st time who was so sweet also! And Clark who's CD I enjoy. Great to hear the songs live! Rick it was nice meeting you too I wish I had more of a chance to talk to you. Steve it was cool to hear the dulcimer live for the 1st time! I know I am gonna miss someone...it was such an overwhelming experience for me. We wrapped up the party sometime around 4 but I didn't wanna leave! After so much Joni fun I had to leave Monday back to PA:-( We really need to work on this Joni commune idea...lol! Paz, Julius, Alison and Barb, my LA traveling amigos! Muchas gracias! It was great company! I only wish we had more time! I hope I get to see everyone again sometime. Before I rant on even more I should go but thank you everyone for a wonderful trip... (How many KNEW I would start out with that line???) I don't even remember doing that one!! What does that mean??? Did I have TOO much fun?? Who played that one cause I don't do it consiously. I DIT I DIT have too much fun! Well as usual I am So late posting because I had too much fun. Everyone has pretty much posted what we did so I will skip all that and just make some short comments. First of all thanks to my old hejira buddy Kakki for hosting another wonderful party (and under the pressure of having a sick daddy-hope he is better soon). You really know how to party and the tinis were fab as well as the mix of LeeShore/JMDL groups. Scott was great to play with and boy Robin WHAT A CUTIE!!! But I digress yet again. Nikki, Alison, Julius, and (nonlister Barb), thank you guys for making my NAMM experience the most unique one I have ever had. Great group of people to be stuck in an elevator with. Alison thank you for painting my toes so that Clark could immortalize that fact on the JMDL archives forever. Riding/walking around LA with you guys was so much fun and my face is still sore...........from laughing.....LOL Nikki ( a very beautiful musical spirit), you are playing SO well. I noticed that other people were noticing this as well and doing Tangled Up In Blue with you was a highlight. You better be doing a set ast Ashara's this year or we'll get out the tar and feathers (and the boards and the nails). BTW, thank you SO much for the Joni picks (and to master sleuth Jeff Clark for finding them). Also Alison you need to cut the shit and play more guitar girl cause you rock and you know it. Come to think of it a couple of more body piercings and tatoos would do you good as well. Julius my evil twin brother, it's always great to party with you and your spirit is SO contaigious. Thanks very much to Russ (who I spoke on th phone with at the Davis minifest HI RUSS) thanks so much for the T-shirt. I LOVE IT! I wanted the purple one but it was too small and that beeatch Alison grabbed it. It could have been a really cool mid drift on me. Darice the queen of west coast music sluts (also VERY lucky with tickets to benefit concerts etc.) Great cheesecake and food spread. A wonderful assistant to the hostess with the mostess. Phyliss you are always so much fun and a great singer and supporter of the music end of things. BTW great hotel suggestion, we were able to purchase some great munitions and arms for the revolution back home. Clark, the higher the hair-the closer to God. Your new song is wonderful and I am so happy for you that you have found another strength in your life (besides the storytelling/lies that you are famous for). Steve as usual is the portrait of happiness and the lovely Michelle as well. Once again it was so special to be able to play with you. When Kakki gets a full blown fest going (you know that week long thing she has been working on) I wanna spend a whole day playing just acoustic intsruments with you. I have to go all the way to LA to see Coyote Rick cause when he comes to New Orleans he is far TOO in demand to be bothered with an old fart like me, but that's ok. I hope one of your houses gets picked for a Joni gathering in Kakki's master plan. I finally got to meet the beautiful (much more so in person) (and WAY talented) Kate Bennett and her other half Jeff, who was a great sport and a wonderful player and songwriter hisownself. I wish you guys alot of success with your musical projects. Marian, thanks so much for being there on the other end of the telephone (at least). It was great to hear from you and to hear about Ramona. I hope we get to have a private audience with you this year. I miss playing with you and absorbing all your knowledge. Thanks to you I am popular at JMDL parties and you have expanded by palette like no other. To all of you on the JMDL again: If you ever hear someone on the JMDL say, "we are planing a JoniFest" or "get together" or any variation on that KEY JMDL thing. I urge you to take part in it and find out the latest drug that is sweeping the nation. I WARN you it is quite addictive and while there are after effects they are all that unpleasant especially if you don't mix it with alcohol too (note to self: LESS TEQUILA or was it the limes?) much and you will be ok. Sleep deprevation is a GOOD thing and it makes you so much more fun (just ask Ashara). You will not regret getting involved in such a diverse yet similar group of folk anywhere. In dubbing Video Tree #1, I noticed that he appeared with "Grammy Joni" on tape 2, at 1 hour, 6 minutes, 40 seconds in. Not arguing, just notating. :) This was the "Great Sanyo Experience" on 5-22-94. Does anyone have the name of the town/venue in Japan? OH MY GAWD!! Not only does he get the new parent thing in the song's lyric, but then he adds the "found" sounds of his new daughter at tub time, "Get out the water... baaaaaby. Get out the water... baaaaaby." THEN, he puts in the flat out jazziest harmonica-like solo I have EVER HEARD! I'll never forget the first time I heard that solo. He goes through variation after variation until I think he'll never be able to wring another out of it. So he goes to this incredibly inside-out place and I was SURE he'd never be able to resolve it. But he does. What a great, great take!
