I hope you are lucky enough to hear her someday, being the audiophile that you are. I forgot to mention that she is a big Joni fan and that, during her concert, she performed her own unique and beautiful version of Woodstock in a DADGAD tuning. She was prompted to learn the song by Manhard and she said that her version of the song came to her almost as though it was her own song. If she ever produces a CD with Woodstock included, we'll have to make sure it gets into Bob's Covers Project. All the best to you, Jim! Marian Vienna ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 20:01:04 -0800 From: "Patrick Willoughby" Subject: artifice, brutality and innocence I think Joni is addressing the appetite that a jaded society or spirit has for external sources of renewal. "Innocence" in particular, is particularly appealing to the burnt out soul, because that is what has been lost. Creativity, which is an internal drive, is in a sense a form of ongoing innocence, or at least, an ability to retain a sense of wonder at the world. Although this has never been one of my favorites in her canon, I have always found these "three" concepts intriguing. I think there is a correlation between Three Great Stimulants and the narrator's cry in Beat of Black Wings--the old hate the young...again the old men who create wars send the youth to fight them, and to lose their innocence. The commentary in TGS is perhaps about cultural vampirism in a way. Just a thought. "Guns" is certainly negative, and may relate to the fact that Crosby was usually packing heat around this time, according to his biography, as well as participating in the other 5 'stimulants'. On the surface, some of it may seem happy but I find Pet Sounds to be an album of sad songs. The Beach Boys that gets played on the radio definately has a happy ring, but then that was part of the whole conflict between what Brian Wilson was striving after and the band his father wanted them to be. Stevie Wonder gets my award for writing about happiness and joy and having it really come across in his songs (though his sadder songs are equally exceptional.) And even if music is cheerful, upbeat or inspiring, it might have come from a very dark place. Also of course good music can come from a very good experience, but this does seem to be rarer. >paula cole sings songs that are pretty up beat 'Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?' sounds upbeat, but listen to the lyrics, this is true with a lot of her songs. Yes the Beatles early work is cheerful, but it's their later stuff that is highly regarded by most, and they weren't a happy bunch for most of the end of the sixties. Yes Stephen Stills is cheerful, but is any of his work as acknowledged as Neil Young's 'Harvest'? Michael Stipe, 70's Bowie, Sex Pistols have all been used as examples, but surely their best received work has come from rather screwed up periods of their lives. >and of course, joni's t.i. was very dark while t.t.t. was >very happy. I love TTT, and I think it's just as good as TI, but which one got the grammy and 5* reviews, and which one got 'more of the same' reviews? Also albums such as Hejira and Blue are always given the most praise, and they are not drawn from times when Joni was content with her lot. Compared with (my original point) that during WTRF she was probably having quite a nice homelife. This isn't to say of course that an artist can't draw on past experience, or be a keen observer. But if you're not careful, everything can start sounding like Neil Sadaka 'Boy meets girl' gee-wizz kind of stuff. It's the same thing with artists and novelists a lot of the time. The Great and Powerful Paz was there with his VG-8 and his amazing repertoire of songs de Mitchell and songs of everyone else. Fortunately, he is still letting his freak flag fly and he was also sporting some toe nails painted a pearly gray. Michael and I have decided to go on a tour of America's living rooms this spring and he will be my musical director and guitar teacher. Also present were some listers from Kakki's CSNY group who took us through some of those astounding tunes. Phyllis, in her new role as ceramics artist and entrepreneur looked chic in Valentine red and cocktail black and Darice, the Medicine Woman, made us some deadly delish cheesecake. Steve D, the Dulcimerator, was there to provide some Appalachian accompaniment and as always, he was with the lovely Michelle. I think they are one of the nicest, happiest couples in So. Cal. My good buddy Coyote Rick was there as well as J ulius the Articulate. I am sure I am leaving someone out, but also present were all our old pals Jim Beam, Jose Cuervo and Johnny Walker. For the first time I met Allison who plays guitar and sings and has also been a DJ! I was surprised to meet Nikki and see that she is a 21 year old cutie with a cool cutaway Taylor guitar. She gave me an "e" string and passed along one of the best Joni gifts of all time, a t-shirt from Russ with the cover of Hejira printed on it. Thank you, Russ, this is what I always wanted! It's nice to see Allison and Nikki picking up the Joni banner for the younger generation. I missed the talented Kate Bennet again, but I did get to talk with Marian who called all the way from Vienna. She has a husky/sexy Brenda Vaccaro kind of voice. I am eager to hear her sing. I went back to the Joni tabs recently to see that Marian and the other guitarists have brought it up another level and you can now print out a "friendly version" of the tabs. When I hear 'and the gas leaks, and the oil spills, and sex sells everything and sex kills' I think: what kind of society endorses such methods of promoting products that can lead to unsafe behaviour? Where is the justice in a society like this? Who cares about the effects of sex in media? Is it all about the 'almighty dollar'? Do advertisers ever accept responibility for the images and suggestive scenes they flash on screens and billboards? Should they? What is just about millions dying from sexually transmitted diseases, wildlife and the environment being irrepirably harmed by multi-million-dollar companies? Do we truly live in a just society? Or are we just fooling ourselves because we happen to be more prosperous than the next country? It seems to me that we really are 'governed by greed and lust', and the weak must truly 'suffer what they must'. NJC There are a couple of ways you could go on this one: "A Decade Of ..." is the Dan's "Hits" album. You'll have heard all the songs on FM radio. "Two Against Nature" ... this is the new one, but also one of their finest. If, like me, you like to explore a band's catalog, and get into it with a mix of the familiar and the new, I'd go in this order for starters: Gaucho Pretzel Logic Katy Lied Hope this helps, and that the thread picks up. NJC <> Don, I got your message, haven't seen Mark's yet, but I can guess the question! And I didn't know Blythe Danner was on the JMDL! ;~) And it's tough in some ways, and easy in others. The Dan's discography is not as stylistically varied like Joni's; if you like one of them you're gonna pretty much like 'em all, and if you don't like Fagen's sneering vocals, there's no hope! That being said, The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho have some songs that have a "disco-y" feel that may not sit too well with a new listener. I would vote for Katy Lied, or Countdown to Ecstasy. The latter has longer songs where the band really stretches out, whereas Katy & Pretzel Logic have shorter songs. Also, Two Against Nature & Gaucho are almost TOO sterile for my tastes. They're both great, but pale in comparison to the soul of the earlier stuff. Of course, you can always go the Greatest Hits route, but ultimately I myself find those to be disjointed. I started with Can't Buy A Thrill and moved up from there... Bob NP: Luka, "Background Noise" PS: Becker & Fagen wrote a song with a title also used later by Joni. If so, what does "the strong doing what they will" have to do with millions of people dying from a monkey virus? What does the sad case of police brutality in the wake of subduing a violent and psychotic man in L.A. have to do with a distant epidemic? Are the looters completely without responsibility for their own actions because something ticks them off? Are looters completely without responsibility for their own actions if the home team wins a championship? If their kid wins a championship? If their kid wins a game of Monopoly? Are we requiring limitless responsibility only of multi-nationals? What does the air pollution in L.A. have to do with the fact that millions of Africans don't have watches so they can't "time" their AIDS drugs to prolong their lives, even when the drugs are available? Maybe justice is the opposite of "just ice". Are the drug companies *required* by artists to medicate patients (of any country) who can not afford their products? Are the oil companies *required* by artists to keep the Siberians warm in the winter? (And who decides exactly what temperature is appropriate?) Are the multi-national food companies *required* by artists to provide, deliver, and equably distribute food to the hungry? If the multinationals are required to do that, don't the family farmers also have an obligation to provide, deliver, and equably distribute food to the hungry? If so, what are the obligations of migrant workers, already on the verge of poverty, to those starving on the other side of the globe? Are Chinese bicycle manufactures *required* by artists to provide free bicycles to L.A. residents because the manufacturers have the ability to reduce oil consumption & clean up the air, saving lives, in L.A.? Are Chinese holistic practioners *required* by artists to donate their services and herbs to "heal" the people of America of cancer? Of obesity? Does "Justice" require unlimited accountability across cultures? Is she saying that Justice, if present, would not allow epidemics to exist, merely because they hurt people? It seems simplistic to say, "Epidemic is bad. Justice is good. Since epidemic, therefore no justice." It's also pretty darned arrogant to *assume* that companies have the ability to solve all of these problems. What if there are deadly side effects from free AIDS drugs? Are the companies immune from prosecution? Who gets to decide whether it's a good cause of action (and should be *required* by artists)? If a Chinese manufacturer provides a free bicycle to a city dweller, who also believes in reducing oil consumption, is the manufacturer liable if the city dweller rides directly into oncoming traffic and dies? Where does responsibility end? Getting back to what you said though, Bob, "> The result of greed & lust would cause the AIDS, riots, > pollution, etc." I guess I disagree with the Joanster here. I don't think greed and lust caused the AIDS virus. No more than greed and lust created the common cold. The fact that it's passed by sexual contact doesn't mean that the virus was *created* by sexual contact. I mean, if someone has sex but AIDS is not involved, was there automatically shameful, sinful, lustful content? But if AIDS is transmitted, suddenly the cause of the new case of AIDS is lust? It doesn't add up. AIDS is not *caused* by lust. It's caused by a virus. Now let's do riots. Was "greed and lust" at fault for that guy driving drunk? Not to me. Was "greed and lust" to blame for the fact that the cops ended up beating him because he wouldn't stop getting up? No, there's no greed there. Lust is not a factor. Gross error, yes. The only argument that stands up IMO, is that pollution is the result of greed. If one is feeling charitable though, one could make the argument that the first cases of pollution were acts of ignorance and only the subsequent cases (when the damaging effects were known) resulted from greed. I think that demonizing institutions is way too easy. If I remember right, the song ends up, "Sex sells everything and sex kills." Surely she's not calling for an end to sex because it lacks "justice". What does it mean that the song begins by examining justice and ends by observing that one of life's pleasures can also kill (an unfair, unjust condition)? Is this a grand enumeration of many of the ways that "Shit happens" as they say? I've always thought that she's scolding. Maybe not. Maybe she's posing a question that no one has answered. Maybe the answer is that she expects too much of life. She expects life to be "just" but instead finds that life is "Nasty, broodish and short." (who said that?) As the Adam character once said in Northern Exposure, "Let me tell you something, Ed. Nature is a *BITCH* my friend!" > -----Original Message----- > From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com [mailto:SCJoniGuy@aol.com] > Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2001 2:12 PM > To: jlamadoo@home.com > Cc: joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: "Just Ice" ? > > > < pollution, > etc.? >> > > I would say that the answer is in the line where she breaks down > the word... > > "Is justice just ice? > Governed by greed and lust?" > > The result of greed & lust would cause the AIDS, riots, > pollution, etc. It's probably also significant to say that she > wrote the song in the wake of the LA riots. > > Bob > > NP: Luka Bloom, "Listen to the Hoofbeat" > All the best, Lama "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."
