What are your favorite *live* Joni tracks? My local roots-oriented AAA station plays music recorded in-concert once a week. I told the host that I'd 'pitch' some stuff to her. Amazingly she's willing to spin unreleased stuff, "if it's good". I'm especially interested in what gems people like best from the uhhhmmm unreleased recordings that have been circulating. To get the ball rolling, my current favorite is the 2000 BSN Tour version of "The Judgment of the Moon and Stars (Ludwig's Tune)". I don't think it fits in between Cheryl Crow and Dar Williams though. It might be a tough sell because, like BB King, it's almost outside the format. What do you think? Would the spoken intro for "Magdalene Laundries" be boring to the radio listeners? Can anyone point me to a live version of "The Last Time I Saw Richard?" I don't have a track list of Simon's tape trees. Has anyone built one? There's a great version of "Real Good, For Free" somewhere, but..... where? Which of the Joni & James tracks do you recommend for airplay? Who wants to share with the class? Hands please? Remembering how Julzie used to start threads all the time, Lama ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 05:06:09 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Odds and Sods, NJC With apologies to Keith Moon, here are some notes on Vol 34: "Alison's birthday, Jim Morrison, and more (NJC)" thread by Kakki: Isn't it cool to read about JMDL get-togethers after meeting the folks involved? No Cal, So Cal, I'm jealous of both camps! It's almost like "Whenever two or more are gathered in (her) name, there is love." ~~~ "It's A Girl Thing" thread by Lori near DC: Lori, Elle MacPherson would be sexy just balancing a checkbook in jeans, a sweatshirt, and no makeup. But Lori, I don't have cable so I can't see this film on Showtime. Would you explain the sex scene between Elle MacPherson and Kate Capshaw?....... in detail?...... use as much time and space as you need........ JUST KIDDING! Don't you dare! ~~~ "Re: DJRD, song by song" thread: It's a pleasure to read Bob Muller and Mark (in Seattle) review this wonderful recording! Way to go guys! The stories on this album have a surreal aspect to them, to me. There's that first person "Talk To Me" in which the narrator seems to be drawing a caricature of _herself_. This is something rare. It's funny and disconcerting at the same time. Lama ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 05:30:58 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: 'Blue' HDCD?NJC Well, hmmmm. I had "Blue" on the regular CD release, then a copy of the HDCD release, then a gold copy. None of them are bad in that you can hear the words and notes just fine on all of them. The differences are small, as with all audiophile differences. Since I don't have an HDCD decoding player, I can't speak to the decoding aspects but HDCD decoding has been praised by Stereophile and was designed by a leading audiophile. But all HDCD discs *are* playable on all regular CD players (without decoding). To me, it sounds a little truer than the original CD release, but again, these are small differences. Whether this smoother sound of the piano and acoustic guitar is due to finding better tapes or using newer generation digital converting equipment, or the HDCD encoding, I don't know. Maybe a little of each. I like the gold version best though (on my non-HDCD player, remember) because the moments when Joni overloads her vocal microphone (or is it tape saturation?) sound lots better. That's probably a silly reason to spend all that money to some. If you're listening on a boombox, don't even think about the HDCD or gold discs. On the other hand, if you have all 21 of her titles and you are lucky enough to have a killer stereo, you'll go for it. Boldly letting the chips fall where they may, yet finding himself ambivalent anyway, as usual, Lama PS- As I've said before, I think that the best recording of Joni's piano and acoustic guitar sounds is on FTR. IMO, no matter what the technology, a copy of Blue is never gonna sound as good as similar technology applied to FTR. (I'm not talking about the quality of the songwriting or the performances or anything other than the beauty of the sound of the acoustic instruments.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 16:36:55 +0700 From: "william" Subject: Mark on DJRD Hey Mark, re your DJRD post. You said, +ADw-The song is so dense, lyrically. It kind of sprawls all over from male/female relationships to society in general. NONE of them had HDCD > on them. i bought the European HDCD of STAS a couple of months ago. it definitely is HDCD. it has the tiny logo on the back and the artwork is the restored version by Robbie Cavolina. the disc doesn't have the HDCD logo, but it's the brown Reprise design unlike the old version. the code on the disc centre ends with "02/00" which i believe is the time the remastering took place. more importantly, there is a clear improvement in sound. i think the 'fake' HDCD's all had a big sticker on the front, stating 'HDCD' clearly. this one only has a small silver sticker with 'newly digitally remastered from the original master tapes'. i've also seen a similar 'real' HDCD of Clouds. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 10:00:53 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Top Ten Favorite Live Joni Tracks? That's why I think she uses Chaplin and Bergman, 2 filmmakers whose works were filled with poignant humor, simultaneously funny & sad.... Here's something else I picked up on: "we could talk about power, About Jesus AND Hitler AND Howard Hughes" The thing that struck me was her use of the word AND instead of OR. And following the line about power, she's using Jesus as an example of SPIRITUAL power, Hitler as an example of PHYSICAL power, and Hughes as an example of ECONOMIC power. In other words, she's not saying that we can talk about them seperately, but rather discuss them in tandem. Fascinating stuff. I'm convinced that there's not a word in here chosen at random. I look forward to the final report. One of the things that I love about LA is that there are all kinds of famous people who have lived there obviously and their houses (if wall could talk) make for interesting visits. Last year I was down there and a life long Angelino took me on a tour of several places including marylin Monroes bungalo and the crime scene of the OJ incident. Of course that trip to about five places doesnt begin to scratch the scratch on the surface but it was realy interesting. The other thing is their encountering a "fantastic" band they had never heard of. I experience this in both New York when I go there and in LA every time I go there. All budding star wannabes go to these places and play for peanuts and never get discovered leaving legions of listeners with vivid memories of incredible people they will always wonder why they never "made it". Of course I havent been to Chicago (a dream I must someday fulfil) and I havent been to Nashville or Memphis (likewise) where the same can probably be said. But kakkis report made me think of this. One of these images will be offered as a prize in the contest, though I'm not sure which one yet - - I might let the winner pick. They might also serve as inspiration to someone to try coloring one themselves. I used pastels in all four of the versions. In the darker areas of the pictures, some of the lyrics do get 'buried' in the color, but if anything I think it just adds a little mystery to them. If anyone is interested in purchasing one out right, they are selling for a $75 donation to the websites (plus a $5 shipping fee). I'm sorry if I'm coming across as pest with all of this.
