Yes, the Byrds did perform at Monterey. But Neil Young had just left Buffalo Springfield and Stephen Stills asked Crosby to play with them. From his (Crosby's) autobiography: "Alan Pariser was one of the originators and backers of the Monterey International Pop Festival. I had heard about it all through its evolution as it grew from an idea into a real event. The Byrds were still working together as a band and we agreed to appear. Neil had left Buffalo Springfield and the band was wavering; Stephen asked me to work with them, which was fine with me because Stephen had great songs. I heard him writing "For What It's Worth" in my house, playing those guitar licks. I knew the man could write incredibly well and that had always been bait I had to take. I couldn't resist a good hook. I started hanging out with the Buffalo Springfield. The Springfield had a short half-life, about a year (March '67 - May '68). Before they finally came apart, they asked me to be in the band. I went up to Monterey to play with them; I was a Springfield for a short while." Me again: I've got the video of the Monterey Pop Festival and still get shivers at Janis doing Ball And Chain and amazing everyone there. There's a great shot of Cass Elliot in the audience mouthing something like "Wow, that's incredible"! He hit a tree, in a freak ski accident, on January 4th & had severe head injuries. He wasn't expected to survive the night, but he did. Five days later there has been some improvement in his vital signs but he is still in critical condition. Last night many friends got together in his honor, to play & record songs to send him in the hospital. Fortunately, the doctor is also a musician and approved a CD player. Barry is one of those really talented, really fine human beings that makes the world a wonderful place to live because of who he is. Thanks in advance for your positive thoughts & prayers. I know this works. As Hell mentioned, Crosby, while still in the Byrds, did a few gigs with the Buffalo Springfield, starting with Monterey. The rest of the Byrds got real mad at him for "moonlighting" and it contributed to him being thrown out of the band later in '67. I recently ordered the Monterey Pop box set but was really disappointed that it did not include the Buffalo Springfield set there. Hell quoted this from the Crosby bio: > I couldn't resist a good hook. I started hanging out with the Buffalo > Springfield. The Springfield had a short half-life, about a year > (March '67 - May '68). Before they finally came apart, they asked me to be > in the band. I went up to Monterey to play with them; I was a Springfield > for a short while." I saw them perform at my high school in August '67, and have always had this recollection (which may be wrong) that Crosby played with them there, too. They actually did a "tour" of several high schools in LA County that year (those were the days) and I know others who saw them that summer in their schools. Now for some possible Joni content - I've recently heard a tidbit from a very good source regarding the long-awaited Buffalo Springfield box set that there may be some songs (perhaps live or outtakes, etc.) included on it where Joni sings back-up. If this is true, it would be an incredibly fantastic find. Considering her long friendship with Neil and that Crosby brought her out to LA in late '67, it could be possible that she sang with them on a few occasions. Mark wrote re Burns' Jazz: >But there were some great performances from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival from the likes of Anita O'Day, > Dinah Washington, Big Maybelle, Chuck Berry, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonius > Monk, Jack Teagarden & Mahalia Jackson. I've seen the entire footage of Anita O'Day at Newport and it is amazing. She has it playing on a large screen during her breaks while performing at the Atlas here. Thanks to Lama and everyone else for the great TV tips. I never have time to watch TV too much and don't follow the programming but think I may need to put my feet up on the couch and catch some of these great shows! Ashcroft, step right up, you're next! She took in a poor Guatamalan woman who had come from a battered woman's shelter and let her and her sons live with the family until the woman could get back up on her feet. She helped the woman go to school and get her US citizenship. But see, she was breaking the law for "harboring an illegal alien." It also came out that she had "harbored" two other Hispanic illegal alien women who were in desperate straits and helped them financially and otherwise. Yes indeed, where is the "bipartisanship?" Sure they can shoot Ashcroft down, > but how much *better* in comparison, will Bush's > nomination for ... Supreme Court Justice ... look by > comparison? And therein lies the play at the plate. I really don't know much about him and I'm sure you know a lot more being from his state. But all the hand-wringing over Bush's picks may be much ado about nothing in the end. My dark and cynical prediction is that most all of the Bush picks will be hounded out by his political enemies, and the ones, if any, that remain standing will be nicked and smeared on a constant basis for the next four years. This will probably make the opposition happy and give them something to chew on as they await the 2004 election. In the meantime, though, do people really think all the wrangling and dirty politics is productive for the country? The negativism, uncertainty and distraction that will no doubt result from all the mud-slinging is not going to be beneficial for the overall running of the country. The economy will probably flatten out badly as a result and then Bush will be blamed for that, too. If only he had done the bidding of the opposing party and picked all their idealogical choices like a good puppet, eh? I think we all should have a say and, of course, hold our public servants accountable for their actions regardless of party affiliation but why not wait just a bit to see how these people are going to serve before ranting and scorching the political earth on a daily basis?
