Not so much boarders, but I did have a very bad experience when looking for a flatmate (room-mate?) when I first arrived in Auckland. I advertised in the paper (as is usual here) in the Flatmates Wanted section and waited for the phone to ring. I got a lot of responses and gave people the relevant information like what I did, who was in the house (just me) etc., etc. A normal question was someone asking "Can I come and have a look at the house, and if so, when will you be home?" I told people I worked during the day, but would be home from 5pm. Unfortunately this was an extremely bad move! I came home from work after arranging to meet one guy that evening (ie. after 5pm) to find the house had been burgled - everything had been gone through as well. They (luckily) weren't music fans, and I didn't have CDs in those days, but they took the TV, video, my guitar, a couple of jumpers, all my sports shoes and sports bags and a couple of pieces of jewellery. Not the brightest of thieves, since they took one of a pair of shoes (the other was in the laundry) and missed my great-grandmothers cameo brooch, which would have been worth a fair bit. But since I had quite happily told them there would be no one in the house all day, they obviously took their time! But I learnt my lesson. From then on I always said that I'd be coming and going all day, but would definitely be in the house in the evening. I also had a nasty experience in Wellington where the same man would keep ringing. He'd start off asking about the flat, but would then move on to questions like "What do you look like?" "Have you got a boyfriend" "Is it just you in the house now?" Luckily I twigged early and never gave him the address or any personal information, and eventually he gave up, but it wasn't very pleasant. Thank God I can now afford to live alone, and don't have to go through all that again! We had the opportunity to see Wynton perform in an intimate concert with his jazz ensemble at a middle school in Toronto several years ago. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself. The anticipation was too much and when he walked into the gym, so casual and cool, I couldnt believe it. He walked in with the biggest smile, like he owned the joint. He was wearing jeans, a sweat shirt and running shoes... and yea, after the concert, he played b-ball with the kids. Afterward, I walked up to him, shook his hand, talked a while. Most of the time he was drunk, I experienced his "other" personalities, then my roommate would get into arguments with him, tell him he had to leave, and when he wouldn't she would call the police, and when he started giving them shit they would take him to a cell for the evening. Does anyone >care to say something positive? Anyone? Ooooh, no! The people he has chosen may be culturally diverse, but he hasn't done anything to "unite" not "divide" in his choices - many of whom are *extremely* right wing. Ashcroft for example - besides being a fundamentalist to the point where he believes dancing is sinful (remember "Footloose" anyone?), he opposed a black man's nomination for the federal bench, calling him "pro-criminal" because a few times Ronnie White had chosen to overturn the death penalty (note that multiple other times he did not overturn the death penalty)... hmm... pro-criminal? What the hell is that? Or is Ashcroft trying to keep African Americans out? There is a lot more about him, but I won't go into detail here. There is a very interesting article about Ashcroft at tompaine.com (which is fairly left-wing) - the opinion in the article is definitely anti-Ashcroft but you can make your own judgment about the information they present. Of course I know someone is going to jump in and support Ashcroft now but I just have to say that someone with close ties to Pat Robertson, who is significant financial support by the religious right, who has spoken out strongly against gays/lesbians and abortion (to the point of no compromise with the Republican party when they tried to adopt a platform that was diverse on the abortion issue)... that person is not someone I feel comfortable with as attorney general. And don't get me started on Linda Chavez. Yes she is a woman. Yes she is Latina. Great. She also is anti-labor and against the minimum wage - she once basically called a minimum wage Marxist (with utmost disgust). Is she going to be good at her job? Will she serve the interests of working people? She isn't very sympathetic to them. As for Spence Abraham as Sec'y of Energy.... Though I'm no advocate of drug use, after all it took me down the WRONG road, but it's interesting to see the amazing results using drugs sparingly can bring to one's art. So often we only get to see what happens to the creative process when substance abuse takes over and the well of imagination starts to dry up. The president-elect's picks may be "culturally diverse," but they're also pretty ideogically uniform, with a couple of notable exceptions (e.g., Colin Powell, who's been nominated for a position in which he won't have much of a chance to implement he pro-affirmative action, pro-choice views; Christie Whitman, ditto for the latter issue). And in key positions (e.g, Labor and Justice), he's chosen to dip into the far-right wing of the Republican party. I know Mr. Bush has a right to nominate whomever he chooses. However, he faces an equally split Senate, lost the popular vote, and won the state that gave him the edge in the electoral college by the slimmest of margins. He also ran on the platform of being "a uniter, not a divider." I just don't see that here. Yes, I'm disappointed. In reality, Ashcroft's own political views, agenda and voting record can be found on the extremest fringes of the reactionary right. But it's the nomination, and not Mr. Ashcroft *himself* we must be wary of in this case. Bush's choice can be likened to a baseball manager walking out to argue with the ump about a close call at first. It's not *that* call the manager's really interested in ... it's the next one. The one that might count. The play at the plate. Ashcroft's nomination, in other words, is really not much more than a straw man offered as sacrfice to more liberal Democrats. Sure they can shoot Ashcroft down, but how much *better* in comparison, will Bush's nomination for ... Supreme Court Justice ... look by comparison? And therein lies the play at the plate. In closing, do I think Bush is this politically savvy? No, the man's clearly a simpleton. But Dick Cheney on the other hand ... you bet. And now, let the flames begin ... I promised to learn to stay out of these issues ... so much for New Year's resolutions! ;-) Don Rowe ===== Visit me anytime at http://www.mp3.com/donrowe Yahoo! NJC Hey Lori, Yeah, it was John Sebastian. I was aiming my remarks about Jason Marsalis at people who attended the JoniFest in New Orleans, including Lori Reason of Switzerland. But really, I'm glad that you enjoyed "Jazz" last night. I heard a review of the series on npr that was mostly positive but it was read with one of those "holier than thou" reviewer attitudes. The only bad thing he had to say was that Burns tends to repeat that Armstrong was the creator of Jazz, over and over, in every single episode, for 18 hours. (Gulp.) He also mentioned that Burns dismisses major talents "who don't make it into his pantheon" with a 10 minutes examination. The reviewer mentioned that Ella Fitzgerald is treated like this. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it as an overview- as a re-introduction to a huge world. My father introduced me to the records of a few artists but I know nothing about John Coltrane & Sonny Rollins for example. Anyway, its good to see you participating in again. :) Take care, Jim > -----Original Message----- > From: Lori R. Sams music is available through mp3.com also, at the following URL and also from folkweb.com and if i'm not mistaken also from cdfreedom.com. so along with recommending Sam Shaber to you Bob and to everyone else, im just reminding the gang of those web sites. I was riveted, and I respect that they didn't attempt to circumvent or sugar-coat the role racial dynamics played in the evolution of Jazz and American culture overall. But in my mind the best thing about watching the Burns' documentary was that it got me tuned in to PBS to see Susan Lacy's "American Masters" series documentary on the great Ella Fitzgerald, which directly followed it on my local affiliate. Two hours of uninterrupted musical documenatary bliss. A comprehensive retrospective on this incomparable singer's life and career. Tears streamed down my face when they showed Ella singing "Summertime (and the living is easy)" in the mesmerizing way that only she can. They showed most all the performance segments in their entirety, which was fabulous. Ella singing and dancing with Jimmy Durante, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme. Ella scat singing in a call and response challenge with a muted trombone virtuoso. It was the best television I've ever seen in my life, bar none. Keep in mind that the same PBS "American Masters" series, executive produced by Susan Lacy, has a segment on our beloved Joni in the works. If it's half as well rendered as the documentary on Ella, it will be awesome...a masterpiece. I can't wait. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 16:06:25 -0800 From: jan gyn Subject: Fwd: Forgive me...but these things just keep on comin' (NJC) >> Dear Abby, >> >> I am a sailor in the US Coast Guard. This is the first time I have written. I am young for the typical Joni Mitchell fan I guess. Most of my friends have only heard of her because of the woodstock footage that is shown every couple years on Much Music, so needless to say I don't play her albums at parties much. However, she did, infact become the soundtrack to my life.We were doing a poetry unit in class and my teacher brought the lyrics to "Case of you" out and we studied her for a few weeks. In a nutshell, Blue changed me. Two summers ago, when I was in my last year of high school, I took a trip with my philosophy class to Italy. That was around the time when I discovered Blue, among many other records that my parents have in the basement of my house. I relate with everything she is saying in Carey. I understand completely who the woman is in the last time I saw Richard, which coincidentally is my favourite song on the planet. I find that the entire album was sort of a release. It is a soundtrack for the wandering spirit. In my humble opinion. I have noticed that there is a lot of Radiohead conversation going on with the mailing list too. For Patrick, I think (?) if you are at all interested in Thom Yorke, there are many more bands he has worked with besides PJ Harvey. REM, Bjork, UNKLE, the posies, sparklehorse...I believe that he is one of the most gifted musicians I have ever heard, and it is amazing that I would find the two most important people musically in my life on the same discussion mailing list. And Richard Isen...is he anything like Rufus Wainwright? I would really like to know. Sarah PS: There is a Tori Amos cover of Case of You that you can download on Napster...it is really beautiful, I would recommend it :) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 18:34:53 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: a decent tv night (njc) > Oh Marcel, > > I bet there are a few around here that have some pretty neat old stuff ;-) > You can see some of it on the latest Video Tree #2. > I read on the CSN list today that AMC has been playing lots of real vintage > footage from the 60s group and will be playing The Monkees' HEAD movie next > week! Isn't a very young Jack Nicholson in that one? AMC also played 'Monterey Pop' on Saturday, the film of the awesome 1967 Monterey Pop festival that featured the likes of Janis Joplin w/Big Brother & the Holding Co, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas & the Papas, The Who, Jimi Hendrix & Ravi Shankar. They were playing the videos Kakki mentions above after the movie. I think this was the channel that Marcel must have been watching. I'm pretty sure I saw that 'Good Vibrations' video in the mix somewhere. Btw, I'm positive I saw David Crosby on stage testing the sound equipment during Monterey Pop but the Byrds weren't in the movie and this was pre-CSN. Did the Byrds perform at Monterey in 67? Saturday was quite a night for TV. BET-Jazz aired 'Jazz on a Summer's Day' right before 'Monterey Pop' started on AMC. It was kind of frustrating watching it, though, as they cut in a raft of commercials after nearly every number. But there were some great performances from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival from the likes of Anita O'Day, Dinah Washington, Big Maybelle, Chuck Berry, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonius Monk, Jack Teagarden & Mahalia Jackson. The climax, however was Louis Armstrong. Watching him play his horn was a religious experience & when the man opened his mouth to sing he radiated pure joy. I watched the first installment of 'Jazz' last night, staying up past my bedtime to see the whole thing. I don't know if I'll be able to catch every part of it but I want to try & see as much of it as I can. Fascinating material. Billie was mentioned as one of the important figures in the beginning of the film so I'm hoping for some good stuff on her. It was interesting to learn all the influences that they cited as going into the brew that became jazz - gospel, Caribbean, Ragtime, military marches, work songs, blues - a lot of ingredients. I've only dabbled in jazz up til now so I'm really excited to learn more about it. I ended Saturday by stumbling across 'Citizen Ruth' on the Sundance channel. A very arch & wicked satire that manages to skewer the fanaticism that is sometimes exhibited by both sides of the abortion issue. Laura Dern should have gotten at least an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Ruth, the ne'er-do-well addict who gets pregnant & causes all the fuss.
