It contains stuff like that below. www.stats.org. [[CBS This Morning (Oct. 28) and many local TV newscasts recently warned Americans of a "hidden hazard" - automatic doors. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are an amazing 3,000 accidents a year involving automatic doors. These numbers appear to put efforts at egress right up there with chain saw juggling. But before we all decide it's safer to just stay put, let's add a little perspective. According to 1995 CPSC figures, beds caused 395,623 injuries, television sets harmed 36,959 people and 43,687 injuries were linked to toilets.]] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 08:27:33 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Danger everywhere (md) (NJC) << a "hidden hazard" - automatic doors. >> Yes, Marcel, this can be treacherous...rule of thumb, wait for the automatic doors to OPEN, *THEN* pass through! ;~) Bob, heading off to church like a good boy... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 09:47:53 -0600 From: mags Subject: Re: **Just joined first Penny wrote: > > Oh, you're one of the lucky ones! Lance, Twice now I have had to remail tapes for people. What is so funny about this is that I live in a tiny village a square mile in size where everyone knows everyone. This time of the year is very hectic for me as I teach and coach volleyball. I usually just mail items out through the school. The first time my package was taken with a slap on the wrist type warning as my return address wasn't on the outside of the envelope. Our school secretary had to give a sworn statement that she knew me and I was of good character. The package got mailed! I sent out your tapes at school on Thursday. Friday our secretary takes down the mail and here is your package, waiting to come back to me. Our poor secretary was beside herself as she is a very helpful person and thought that this matter had been resolved the first time! Anyway, I will pop down to the post office myself on Monday to get your tapes to you. In the meantime I am going to wrap my egg timer that I use toencourage slow-pokes in my class and play a little prank on our beloved secretary. I wonder if she will remember who Ted Kazinski is? I thought it was a new version (like Luka Bloom's) but it is actually a CD re-issue of an album called "It's Me, Mum" which was released in 1968. Seems that Wally started playing skiffle music (like The Beatles) and brings that sensibility to UFG which is a very peppy version. The CD re-release has lots of liner notes, but no JC. There was a strong relationship between George Hamilton IV and himself, which explains his cover of UFG. Apparently Wally Whyton was a very popular folk star in Britain in the 60's...Steve Dulson, do you have any insight? Folk + Brit = Steve D! :~)<< I remember Wally Whyton, Bob, but not so much as a British folk star as a presenter of childrens TV when I was very young. He did sing and play guitar but what I remember most about the program was the puppet who appeared with him who was known as Ollie Beak! Despite being a close follower of the British folk scene, I don't recall him having much of a profile on it. I am sure, however, that he would appear regularly on childrens TV with the famous guitarist Bert Weedon author of Bert Weedon's Play in a Day guitar tutor which got so many budding guitarists started in this country. I met someone recently who knows Bert pretty well and said he was still on good form. I had no idea that Wally had recorded UFG - how interesting! First it absolutely does seem ludicrous. On the other hand this was precisely how the Unibomber killed people. He sent small boxes and thick manilla envelopes. We are moving into a new era in which all kinds of heinous things are small enough to send through the mail to create poltiical statements and as such victims. Thinks like radioactive isotopes. And the victims arent necessarily connected to the statement that the perpetrators want to make. I was struck by an old film that was on the other night. The total story of which is irrelevant in actuality to the point. There were these people who had large homes and their kids had moved out so all their friends "naturally" were wondering why the people hadnt taken in borders (strangers willing to pay rent who needed a room). The movie was about how the border becomes a murderer (not of the rentors but of others in the neighborhood). He doesnt kill the "roommates" he just goes around the neighborhood. Now Im not sure I know anyone who takes in borders that they dont know. But years ago it was common. It was also common to just drop packages of any size or weight into the mailbox nearest you. Since the Unibomber it isnt. I believe that is when the law was changed. The world is so different today it isnt funny. marcel deste ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 09:44:27 -0800 From: "La Puebla Elementals" Subject: Tape Trading - 2nd fret sets Anyone interested in a trade for early joni music...tapes or cds. It's my small way of shouting into the void. A humble attempt to add a touch of harmony to the cacophony and discord that all too often accompanies our human dance. Just a few selections from the hundreds of pieces of free verse poetry and artwork I've done over the years (the many years). ;-) "Jungle Out There" was conceived as a large mural piece. It is a mixed medium composition which began as a digital rendering, done by hand with a Wacom tablet and pen (as many of my 2D art pieces begin). It grew to include elements of lacquered collage, and ink sketch. If you enjoy this art form, click on the 'Other Links' button should you ever visit 'Image & Verse' again - - it will lead you to other similar works that I, as well as my son Justin, have created. Rose, I do share Joni's passion for 'painting with words', but the ethereal plane upon which her creations reside is a place about which I can only dream! I struggle to say poorly in a paragraph what the bewitching Ms. Mitchell (nie Anderson) says brilliantly in a sentence or phrase. Man, to be touched by Roberta Joan's muse for only an afternoon - you could shoot me and take my shoes. I'd die a happy man! She is truly a 'woman of heart and mind' - a very, very old and eternal soul. The gift she has been given, and freely shares, is one for the ages. When history reflects on the 20th century, Joni's creative genius will shine as one of the brightest beacons - a significant milepost on the path of human emotional and intellectual evolution. So I have decided to go into business for myself, providing live music for wedding receptions and other special occasions, focusing mainly on solo piano and vocal songs, including Beatles, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Joni, standards, etc...with guitar also being an option for more James Tayloresque type material. Key selling point will be excellent vocal interpretations of these songs as it seems so easy to fall into a routine doing this type of material. So I will be working under the name of Crystal Clear Music, as everything will be crystal clear. I will also offer the service of putting any poetry or lyrics to music. I am currently working on designing a brochure, making a demo, website, etc...So any referrals would be most welcome if you could keep me in mind. America's Public Broadcasting (PBS) begins airing a special on the history of Jazz on Monday night. Monday evening's opening episode, entitled "Gumbo", covers the beginnings of Jazz through 1917 and focuses, naturally, on the center of early Jazz, Geneva, Switzerland. No, of course that was a joke- it was New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The write-up in my local paper says that in episode 2, next week, Louis Armstrong (AKA "Pops") is the real star, filling out about 2 hours worth of the material, one small piece at a time. The film's creator, Ken Burns, sees Duke Ellington as the greatest composer of the century. Brace yourself though- Mr. Burns' special will consume 18 and 1/2 hours of your life. I'm an old lister to some of you, and a new one to probably a lot of you. I stopped being a lister about a year or so ago, but I've never stopped listening to Joni's music. She's still my primary source of listening material. I'm going to play 1 or 2 of her songs (The Three Great Stimulants, You Turn Me On...) in a couple weeks at a community coffee house. I play guitar (not professionally). Earlier this evening, I was listening to a piece I created about a year ago on my computer with a program called, Mixman. It's a funky, "clubby" sounding piece of music (which is a far stretch from my taste in music) with phrases like; "Look! It's Joni Mitchell", and "Who's that?" What started as a weekend afternoon experiment, became a humouresque poke at the contrast between us Joni listeners, and those who respond to her name with, "Oh ya... she did that `paved paradise' song." :-) I guess you'd have to hear the piece, but I think most Joni fans would appreciate the humour. Maybe one day I'll be able to put it on the web for others to hear. Looking forward to catching all the Joni news and fanfare. Cheers!
