Here's a > couple of verses: > He says 'we're beyond flowers' > He says 'we're beyond compliments > We're so close we can dispense with love > We don't need love at all' Gee, it sounds like JT got rather dulled there along the way. Great lyrics by Carly, though. There was an article about the Taylor family that I read a few years ago where I recall JT saying something to the effect that it was a sort of "myth" that he spent time in a hospital for psychological/drug problems and that his parents were just eccentric and had far-out ideas and felt it would be worthwhile for all of the kids to spend a year in the hospital whether they needed it or not. It said that his borthers and sister also spent time there. Sounds pretty abusive to me, and if true, may account for some of the "demons." However, I also recall that "Cold Blue Steel" is supposed to be about his heroin problem, so maybe he did struggle with it on and off. At any rate, this new bio sounds very shallow to me. When you consider the overwhelming depth of Joni's For The Roses album, it's real hard to imagine that theirs was just some hippy-dippy, stoned-out, neurotic relationship. When you listen to their concerts from the early 70s where both of them sounded like angels and never better, it's hard to imagine that the relationship was just some passing dysfunction. When you watch him performing "River" at the TNT tribute, you've got to believe that there was and is something very enduring between them. And when you see that they continued to perform together (McGovern) and collaborate (HOSL - thanks, Patricia) not that long after the break-up, it flies in the face of a lot of what apparently is being written in this bio. Now I know why people get so irked at "revisionist historians." ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 11:49:15 -0000 From: "Bill Pearson" Subject: Re: the year in music (NJC) > > > David Gray and Westlife etc gets released. I do this religiously ... in fact, CD burning has come to evolve it's own little ritual, complete with breath-holding and tip-toeing from the room while writing is in progress! On a more serious note -- what you might want to do is look up the make and model of your burner, and download the most recent set of software drivers for it from the manufacturer's website. The consistency of the problem you describe sounds like something's not right in that department. One last thing, do you do the "test" before you actually write the CD? If not, you should -- it could be something the test mode might find. Don Rowe ===== Visit me anytime at http://www.mp3.com/donrowe Yahoo! He was 89. Mr. Rhodes was the creator of the famed Rhodes electric piano, an instrument that grew from a crude model he fashioned out of airplane scrap during World War II into a classic favored by such performers as Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. The introduction of the Rhodes piano in 1965 is considered a critical development in the evolution of jazz-rock in the 1970s. It gave the music of artists such as Hancock, Miles Davis and Chick Corea an unexpected mellowness, blended well with other instruments and had a true piano touch. "Certainly the Rhodes piano was an instrument that had to be available for anything like our music to have happened," Hancock said in a 1975 interview. "I simply couldn't play the same tunes we're now doing on an acoustic piano. It just wouldn't work." Mr. Rhodes was born in the San Fernando Valley, the son of a real estate agent and a seamstress. He was exposed to jazz as a child, listening to his brother's phonograph collection, and was so intrigued by some of the more unusual chord voicings he heard that he asked for piano lessons. By 1940 he was operating a successful chain of piano studios from Los Angeles to New York. In World War II, Mr. Rhodes was assigned to flight instructor training in the Army, and he gave piano lessons to his buddies to kill time. The lessons became so popular that a surgeon at the base hospital in Greensboro, N.C.,talked him into teaching piano to injured soldiers as part of their rehabilitation. There was one problem: He could not find a piano suitable for teaching injured GIs confined to bed. "So, I thought, 'Hell! I'll make it myself,' "he recalled in an interview with Down Beat magazine in 1974. Mr. Rhodes scavenged wood scraps and hydraulic tubing from old B-17s to make a crude, lap-sized piano that could play 29 notes. After the war, he went into partnership with guitar and amplifier maker Leo Fender in 1955, producing Mr. Rhodes' 32-note piano bass -- essentially, the bottom half of an electric piano keyboard that, when played, sounded like an electric bass guitar. Not until CBS took over Fender in 1965 was Mr. Rhodes' piano made and successfully marketed. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 18:31:00 EST From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #3 In a message dated 1/4/01 3:18:50 AM Eastern Standard Time, les@jmdl.com writes: << I also bought the Brian Hinton book on Joni so I'll be delving into some more unmitigated lies. I did update the software from 4.02 to 4.03 - although I can't see any noticeable differences. In actual fact I was prompted to check for updates anyway (a new feature I installed last night which checks for updates on all software). I also decided to write to the disk at a slower speed, ie. 4x (600 KB/sec) rather than 8x (1200 KB/sec) (I also made sure I didn't touch anything while the CD was writing!). The result is a good quality disk with no errors - as far as I can tell. Yippee!!! Hell P.S. Don, I did run the test first, and no errors were displayed. ____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://www.nbls.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 16:48:40 -0800 From: moonlj@san.rr.com (Lindsay,Moon) Subject: James Taylor Book, continued Mark in Seattle responded to my writings about the JT autobiography: The JT book said that at some point Carly took to using a bathrobe sash to tie her ankle to James's after he was asleep so she'd know when he got up in the middle of the night to prowl for more drugs. He caught on, though, and extricated his foot from the sash and was gone again. I woke up this morning thinking of the Joni line: "oh, and deep in the night, our appetite finds us, releases and binds us, deep in the night ..." Kakki also responded: In all honesty, this could be my faulty memory (I should have taken notes!) I'd have to re-read that section of the chapter ... I started Hinton's book last night and it seems very entertaining. So far it seems pretty accurate (many quotes of Joni's I've read here and there.) I had trouble making myself go to bed at 11:30 (and my New Year's Resolution was to try to get to bed between 10 and 11). Hi all, The thought occured to me that it's possible Joni did two Black Crow ice skating shoots. One for the Hejira cover itself and another for the video footage that is included on the Shadows and Light japanese dvd. In which case, it's probable that both locations were used, since I can't picture them flying Toller out to cheese land just to get him in a rink. New York sounds right for that. The next part of my statement is an open plea to the list to gather leaders, name names and kick butt. I have fallen short in my efforts ot get an interview with Fred Walecki for the Joni sites. The one time I talked to him he did not sound in the best of health. Repeated emails turned up nothing and I confess I am concerned. I've written to a few listers in the hope that someone would make a contact for the list through his business. Assuming he's interested, if he is at all healthy enough to do an interview I think it's important that we act with some swiftness in this regard. In the past year I have lost two good friends and even a week or two in terms of contact meant a world of difference. We would be remiss to leave Fred's voice out of the official Joni sites. Both for his irreplacable knowledge about Joni and simply for the man himself. A rare and special person indeed. As Mark mentioned contact with Joel Bernstein would also be welcome. My god! What a great, great idea. Image the endless fun that interview would be. His familiarity with Joni's music has to be as rare and personal as anyone on this green earth. If no one knows how to get a hold of him, perhaps the contact through Fred's shop might lead to something. Certainly Fred Walecki has a fast track to Joni and her management. If anyone is as intrigued by all this as I am, I do hope you will step forward to the list and see if we can get a ball rolling! Maybe I should be asking Ashara to lend her management skills... deligate, girl. Deligate! Or perhaps I can make a contest of this ala Park Ranger Rick (most missed since the Saskatoon crazies, besides that lil whipper snapper, Emil). A painting of Joni to the person that pulls off the interview! --I'd make it a new car... except I need one myself. John. Now playing... the wisconsin badgers and the indiana hoosiers. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 20:18:55 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: fresh spring In a message dated 1/4/01 2:26:40 PM Eastern Standard Time, Siresorrow@aol.com writes: << today, he reminds me of a fresh spring that winds it's way down a mountain, that weaves and tangles all over. and some how, this spring has remained unpolluted. and alot of hikers on that mountain, might just skip on by or step right over that fresh spring and keep moving up their hill. i guess today i feel very fortunate because of this list. because of the list, i knew to stop and look into that clear water and drink from it. and it was very refreshing and joyful and it has a real impact on my life. >> That was a very nice thing you said about Victor. I had the pleasure of meeting Victor at JoniFest this past year. Besides from being a very talented musician, Victor is a very sweet, caring and gentle young man. I've enjoyed listening to his CD "Tangled" quite often. It's funny but the way you described Victor reminds me of a line 5 of the I Ching in the hexagram "The Well" It reads: The water in the well is fresh and limpid. The man drinks from the cool spring. Another's mind and heart are opened to you. The other person only need an invitation to come and bring about the resolution of all your confusion. But- you do not know who the other person is. I'm happy that your time spent with Victor and Holly was a momentous one for you Pat. It just goes to show how very special a community of people this is. - - Rose in NJ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 17:41:59 -0800 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: rhodes to a grecian urn (NJC) jan gyn wrote: > Los Angeles -- Harold Burroughs Rhodes, > died of complications from pneumonia Dec. 17 > Mr. Rhodes was the creator of the famed Rhodes electric piano, an > instrument that grew from a crude model he fashioned out of airplane > scrap during World War II I love the image of making musical instruments out of war machines. Off the wall stuff like "Me and Mrs. Jones", "Little Red Corvette". My fave is "Manic Superstar" from "excuses", which swaps verses from Hendrix' "Manic Depression" and "Everything's Alright" from Jesus Christ Superstar. Neither Sandra Bullock nor Sandra Day O'Connor can pull that off! Not even Sandra Dee! The store does not have evening hours but I have to go over that way for work in the next few days so I will check out the situation. If I learn anything before then, I'll let you know. I just checked out their web site and there is no news about Fred. However, it still lists the 6 Joni guitars for sale as "Coming Soon." I hope he is doing alright. I know someone who I believe knows Joel Bernstein fairly well. I'll see what I can find out on that end, too.
