Re: my website, I am SO way behind on updating my website which does not include the most wonderful online store for CDs that I have EVER seen as well as lots of other stuff I want to get up there soon. The online store is www.CDBABY.com. So if you are looking for indie music, try this place first. These guys are GREAT supporters of indie music & I am really happy to give some of my CD sale profits to them (they take a lot less than amazon). They appear to be florishing when many others are folding. Its because they are doing it right, treating people right, & are very progressive as far as clients go. I can go in there & change my text & it will be instantly updated. As a business, I think they are leading the pack. I don't think the owner Derek gets much sleep. There is a lot of indie music biz how to do it info up there too. Check em out. But overall it seems to me, I'll have to disagree with you here on David Gray. Yes, the verdict is still out because he's a newcomer, but he has talent as a songwriter. His first LP definitely has it's moments. As good as some of the old timers out there that have put out mediocre stuff. Mister Muller continues to astound with his tireless work on the Covers project and by making collections like "Flotsam and Jetsam" available free. (Okay, it's available in exchange for blanks and postage.) You may also remember that Muller is apparently something of a sex symbol among both straight and gay JMDLers. (He got pinched at JoniFest and a picture of a male model in a bathrobe was described as "Bob"). He also has been known to make up hysterical lyrics, complete with rhymes and a story, on the spot when the proper... lubrication has been applied. Bob also cures cripples and lepers when he's not working for world peace. On the other hand, he's a lousy tipper. What I'm saying is, thank you, Bob. Bob NP: Rickie Lee Jones, "It Must Be Love" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 14:49:41 -0800 From: Lindsay Moon Subject: New James Taylor Book Someone recently posted about a new James Taylor bio. So while in Borders today and having a million other things I was *supposed* to be doing (just like right now!) I sat down in a comfy chair and read the Joni chapter (and a bit of the Carly chapter too). And I'm sorry I can't recall who posted about the book. As mentioned, the book states that part of the attraction by each was that both Joni and James were into drugs (I'm sorry, maybe I'm in denial or some kind of fantasy. I'll go along with pot, but I just can't see Joni shooting dope. I don't buy it.) It also says that during their very passionate romance, Joni kept noticing James's eyes wandering and got increasingly annoyed with him for that. The book says he split from her leaving her angry and hurt and that she spent the next few albums spewing her anger at him. One "fan" of both JM and JT noted something along the lines of, hey, everybody was screwed up back then, but JT had too much class to stoop to her level and air his feelings in front of the public as she did. The book insists that Joni just couldn't get over James and it took them quite a while to heal the relationship, but that they were very pleased to start working with each other in the '80s. After working on "Dog Eat Dog," James said that he was in awe of what Joni was doing musically and what she was doing was really "it." They did have a quote from Jerry Garcia saying how he loved Joni's music and everytime he put it on he could hear something new in it, and that James's music had the same quality (I don't personally agree) and that the two together were everyone's hippie fantasy of free love, free drugs, and rock and roll. I read part of the chapter/s on Carly. I didn't realize her dalliances with the likes of Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson, and Mick Jagger (Jagger while dating JT). Plus JT was still doing heroin while being married to Carly and after their daughter Sally was born (I guess I thought he'd ki cked it much earlier than that.) Guess it just proves that everyone was screwed up back then (I wasn't subscribing to People then for all the hot celebrity gossip.) So for those of you who are interested in gossip, based on fact or fantasy, there you have it. I also bought the Brian Hinton book on Joni so I'll be delving into some more unmitigated lies. Jeez, I must be desperate for bad gossip! Lindsay P.S. Was looking for kids CDs containing the song "High Hopes" that Frank Sinatra sang in a 1950's movie called "Hole in the Head." I found a recording of it (not Frank's) and also found a kids CD called "Jazz for Kids -- Everybody's Boppin'" by Lisa Yves and what do I find on it but "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" and "Twisted" (neither performed by Joni). Of course I bought it immediately. I'll let you know. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 18:16:38 -0500 From: "Janine Sherman" Subject: RE: The Real New Millennium Joni Giveaway Winners njc Subject: RE: The Real New Millennium Joni Giveaway Winners njc > Rick and Sue, > How can I possibly come close to Wally's acceptance speech? I was also going to stop in Borders and do the same last weekend but ran out of time. I have this urge to pore over it, gleefully extracting the inaccuracies like some did with the Hinton book. ;-) Sounds like a bunch of crockola. The JT and Carly fans are also posting a few roasts of it. Joni has always maintained that she never shot any dope. I also recall JT's heroin problem preceeding Joni but don't know for sure. To say she spent the next few albums spewing her anger at him is also ridiculous. If anything, she was wearing her heart on her sleeve or pining away in most of the ones attributed to him. Many of the other songs in that period are attributed to other people. Is "watching your hairline recede, my vain darling" spewing anger? What a laugh! And he had "too much class to stoop to her level" ? Gimme a break - he was happily skating away with Carly at that point. He also did not wait until the 80s to collaborate with her again. There is either an album and/or a concert recording from around '75-'76 where he appeared with her. I can't recall it now, but will look for it. They broke up in '71 but also did the McGovern benefit together in '72 as I recall. > that the two together were everyone's hippie fantasy of free love, free drugs, and rock and roll. Gimme another break! The Stones, yes, the Grateful Dead, yes, the Airplane, yes, but Joni and James - puleeze! > I read part of the chapter/s on Carly. I'll leave this one for the Carly fans to debunk, but my memory of the time and what I've read tells me these are some more sensationalistic stretches of the imagination! I wonder when Joni will ever come out with her autobiography. I'd really like to hear if from her, but I also feel that, other than the few clues she leaves in her lyrics, she tends to be discreet about her relationships. I'll have to check out this book - it's good to get my low blood pressure cranked up every now and then! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 21:11:13 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: New James Taylor Book << a kids CD called "Jazz for Kids -- Everybody's Boppin'" by Lisa Yves and what do I find on it but "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" and "Twisted" >> That's some synchronicity, Lindsay, because I came across that CD yesterday while doing some searches on song titles. I'm thinking it would fit nicely on a covers volume! The quality of the music is supposed to be very good, and from what I understand is played by kids? Is that true? Speaking of covers, another one showed up in the mail today..."Urge For Going" by Wally Whyton. I thought it was a new version (like Luka Bloom's) but it is actually a CD re-issue of an album called "It's Me, Mum" which was released in 1968. Seems that Wally started playing skiffle music (like The Beatles) and brings that sensibility to UFG which is a very peppy version. The CD re-release has lots of liner notes, but no JC. There was a strong relationship between George Hamilton IV and himself, which explains his cover of UFG. Apparently Wally Whyton was a very popular folk star in Britain in the 60's...Steve Dulson, do you have any insight? Folk + Brit = Steve D! :~) The CD is a real value too - 2 vinyl albums on 1 CD, 79 1/2 minutes. Besides the Joni he plays some Dylan, Lightfoot, traditional, and lots of his own songs which are protest folk in nature. Oh, and btw Lindsay, I thought Hinton's book was great, my opinion had been tainted by what I read here but I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very informative... I don't know if James was using during his marriage to Carly but I do recall reading that he was still struggling with some of the aftermath of addiction. There's a song on Carly's 'Spy' album called 'We're So Close' that describes a relationship where the man is pretty much absent most of the time both physically & emotionally. Here's a couple of verses: .... It's come to be A habit with me To dine alone you're never home And the evenings end so early He says 'we can be close from afar' He says 'the closest people always are We're so close that in our separation There's no distance at all' .... There's a husky voice That speaks to me in the dark And on the phone from studios and west side bars Through tunnels of long distance He says 'we're beyond flowers' He says 'we're beyond compliments We're so close we can dispense with love We don't need love at all' I seem to remember reading that James would go out for a walk during this period and come back two days later. Hard to believe that that benevolent looking, smiling man who performs such pretty music could exhibit such behavior. Carly has always spoken well of James as far as I know, saying he's such a good guy, such a good father, etc, etc. He may have been clean when they were married but I don't think he had laid all of his demons to rest. Tonight I re-read the 1974 Maclean's magazine interview w/Joni done with Malka- wasn't she posted about last week? Mouth like yours? Malka- Your name has been linked to some powerful people in the business. James Taylor and Graham Nash, for instance. Do you feel that your friends have helped your career in any way? Joni- I don't think so, not in the time that James and I were spending together anyway. He was a total unknown, for one thing- maybe I helped his career?...But I do think that when creative people come together, the stimulus of the relationship is bound to show. The rock and roll industry is very incestuous, you know, we have all interacted and we have all been the source of many songs for one another.......... Unfortunately the first 5-10 seconds of each track has a large amount of static or "noise" before the track settles down. Can anyone think of a reason for this? Is it the quality of the CD-R I'm using (I got 10 free ones with my PC purchase). I can't see any options in the software to account for this, and since I've never done this before I'm kind of flying blind! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
