If you would like to try something different, there is a local (Quebec, Canada) singer/cello player who is making a bit of a stir in spite of the fact that she is very non commercial. She is alternative and sounds like a cross between Tori Amos, Jane Siberry and Alanis Morisette. Most of her music is also in french so she won't be for everyone. Her name is Jorane and you can check out her stuff at Napster. The one song that she does in english is called Jinx and that is probably a good song to start with. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 14:33:47 -0000 From: philipf@tinet.ie Subject: Re: Feliciano, Ronne Blakely Anne wrote > The talk about Ronne Blakely has reminded me of a song she > did called "Gabriel." Does anyone else remember it? It came > out in the early to mid 70s. I know the song you mean. It's on her first album which to be honest I was a bit lukewarm about. But "Welcome".her second album was a different story entirely. It was one of the best albums of the mid 70s. Aretha's band played on it and Jerry Wexler produced. Ronee really found her voice on it both as a songwriter and singer. She sounded warm, passionate and sexy. The song She Lays It On The Line is reckoned to be about Joni. In the end Wexler went cold on the album and Warners made a mess of the marketing. The ads emphased the Barbara Jean connection, so the rock fans thought it was a country record. Rolling Stone dismissed it in a one paragraph review and there it seems ended the career of a real musical talent. One of the highlights of my time off was a trip to Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley wineries. The timing was perfect - on our way home, Michele, her mom and I were able to stop by Cold Springs Tavern to catch Kate Bennett and band Saturday afternoon. Now, Kate's CD is excellent, but live the songs just...er...come alive! Really fine arrangements, very tasteful backing, and Kate's vocals are (IMHO) much warmer live than on the recording. Kate, I applauded the intro to "Irene" because it's my favorite on the CD! :) I highly recommend Kate and Co. if you have the chance, and I look forward to seeing them again. Toscano's is at 47 Charles Street. Here are some landmarks: Charles Street is at the bottom of Beacon Hill, just a few blocks down from the state capital building (the Bullfinch masterpiece with the golden dome!) and it intersects with Beacon Street. Charles St. runs inbetween the Boston Common and the Boston Public Gardens, if that helps. The phone number there is 617-723-4090. you can try calling them for instructions, if you need them. if they are no help, call me. (see below) the restaurant has valet parking, but i would recommend you park in the boston common parking garage, which is about 3 blocks away from the restaurant. i have made reservations for 15, which should be one or two more than we need, so if there are any last minute attendees, we will have room for you! if you should get there before anyone else, just say you are part of the Welch party, as the reservation is in my name. (i should have made the reservation in the name of joni mitchell!!) now: instructions. it is too complicated for me to come up with generic instructions for all of you, since you are all coming from different directions. (the most generic i can come up with is "take a cab") so, if the restaurant cannot help you, or if you don't feel like you understood what they say, feel free to call me at my office tomorrow or thursday. i am there from 8:30AM until 5PM, and my phone is 1-800-745-2181 x 9061. if you get my machine, leave a message and i will call you back within 5 or 10 minutes. i will tell my secretary to find me whereever i am, in the event you reach her. then you can tell me where you are coming from and we can figure out the best way for you to come. i can't wait to see all of you...so chuck and barbara and ashara and sal and heather and anne and d.j. and bob and chris and as many significant others as you see fit to bring (lindsay wants to come with me! yikes...) join roberto and me and bring your appetites and your social skills and we will see you at toscano's where a splendid time is guaranteed for all. love and peace, ric ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 19:51:23 EST From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Joni is No. 1 in Poll I picked up the 12/00 issue (v. 8; issue 50) of Performing Songwriter magazine (there is a beautiful cover of Emmylou Harris and a nice interview inside), and as I was flipping thru the pages, I came across the results of a ten month-long reader's poll that the magazine has been running. The poll was entitled "Women Changing the Face of Music" and Joni was listed as number 1 (followed by Emmylou Harris at No. 2 and Carole King at No. 3). They quote 2 readers: "A vital influence of so many teen-to-adult transformations. She wrote the life we wanted to live. If we could have found Sisotobell Lane, we'd be there still." But overall it seems to me, > new > artists come along and music gets better every year. > > Philip it's a very good question. access to music of a widening variety of types is ever increasing. the technology to make quality recordings and more sounds is getting better and better. there is also a lot of stunning musicianship out there, which i often see in the form of road bands (the blade bros, for example). what seems to suck is what is thrust into the mainstream via promotional push. clearly, the trend for record labels has been to please their stockholders with the next blockbuster, not to develop artists for the long haul. have you ever looked at those billboard things in the back of rolling stone? where they list what was popular 10, 20, 30 years ago? i've compared those things sometimes, and yeah, there's always some old clunkers (especially early 80s), but it's usually at least 1/2 respectible. when i used to look at current billboards, i could find a dozen or two albums that i owned or at least thought were ok. now i can only find maybe 1 or 2. i don't know if this is a sign of getting old or what - it's certainly not that i'm retro-oriented or that my appetite for new music is quenched. some of my avenues for getting music information have gone away. "musician" magazine was my bible for new artists & releases because their reviews were reliable and well-written. after not making enough money and then undergoing a very unsuccessful revamp, it went out of business. rolling stone has become slave to the corporate promotional machine, and what were passable reviews10 years ago are nothing but comformatory trash now (after ions of subscribing, i've finally decided to let it run out & almost celebrated when i got notice it was done). the last time i successfully bought something via an RS review was soul coughing's debut about 5 or 6 years ago. word of mouth is fantastic on the net, though it's all but run dry amongst my friends as we've aged, and i don't like spending hours in front of the computer surfing or downloading. i do use cdnow's new release announcements that are apparently tailored to my taste (via what i buy there) and realaudio to sample stuff, but i haven't been impressed by much this year. perhaps part of the disappointment is that each year i usually have 'discovered', so to speak, at least 2 new artists (or new to me) that i can get really excited about. toshi reagon is the only one that fits that category, and she didn't have much of a back catalogue to explore. i've seen less shows this year and no runaway great opening acts. also, there hasn't been much from some of my favorite artists - haven't purchased van yet, no new nick cave, no new studio dave matthews, no new kate bush, cassandra wilson, daniel lanois, annie lennox (hope she never plays with dave again), adrian belew, ani difranco (1st solid year she ever went without a new album), elvis costello, poi dog pondering... betty carter is gone... disappointing joni (sorry she just doesn't swing enough or bring anything new enough to the form on BSN to excite me), somewhat disappointing rickie lee, very disappointing peter gabriel. i think there also is one additional mathematical factor - as time goes on, there are fewer old things to discover. in my more explosive musical discovery years, i was finding as much pre-my-time stuff as current stuff - like getting the entire 60s dylan catalogue after 'blood on the tracks', or 'for the roses' years after 'DJRD', or delving into the history of classical, folk, blues and jazz. although i don't doubt we never run out, i'm sure i've hit the vast majority of old stuff i'll ever get excited about. anyhow, i don't know about this theoretical music question. i agree that we have a lot more at our fingertips, but i think you may have to dig deeper in the trash to find it. barbara np: some mingus i got for christmas from a jazzy friend ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 21:18:45 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Nerd jargon, NJC Here are two quick examples. I've just moved from Burlington, VT to Concord, NH. I've been a serious lurker for a couple of years, and I seldom post (My messages've had trouble getting through) This post made me homesick for Boston - Ashara's Labor Day fests have always sounded like a blast, and I went to school at Emerson - rode the Red Line in every morning (except most Saturdays) from Central Square, Cambridge - walked from the Charles St. stop to the college theatre arts building - Charles Street's my favorite of all - the food and antiques (!)- and just grubby enough. There was (is?) a great thrift shop at the Beacon St. end that was run by the Red Cross Nurses' Teaching Hospital (? - I made that up - I can't recall other than that the store's proceeds somehow paid for nursing school!) What was great about it was that folks from Beacon Hill donated their castoffs - good quality - cheap. I'd better stop here, because I'm starting to choke up - High-tone bargain threads can do that to me!
