If you live in the USA you have a 1 in 27 chance of winning and if you live anywhere else in the world your chances are 1 in *3*!!! I have to get the names onto little pieces of paper and then find two hats (or use one hat twice) but first I have to prepare a dish for the brunch we're having tomorrow morning. I will hurry as fast as I can and promise to have everything done as soon as possible. Happy New Year to all. 2001!!! Harder to get my head around than 2000. The final tally was 30 entries: 27 from North America (all from the USA actually) and 3 from everywhere else. It was a treat to be able to do it. And now, the official winners as drawn from my Ranger Stetson by my lovely wife Susan (N.A.) and my son Illya (the world): North American Winner: Janine Sherman of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The World Winner: Wally Kairuz, our very own Birthday Fairy from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thanks again friends. I wish I had enough copies to distribute to everyone who wanted one. That will be my tense 3 1/2 hours today... so from 1 pm EST to whatever, just picture me glued to the front of the tv, sound off, with the UM radio station on, listening to beloved broadcaster Tom Hemingway's last game before retirement (and tears running down my cheeks over that!), and singing Hail to the Victors! and Lets Go Blue! and if you saw the large Michigan Go Blue blanket I use as a wall hanging in my living room, you'd realize my decorating scheme is revealing of my child-like fan-dom... It appears Toller Cranston has thrown down the gauntlet regarding where the famed, beloved Hejira cover was shot. The line is drawn, let the flames commence. Last night, at one of my First Night concerts, I was introducing "Beggars to God," a marvelous tune by Bob Franke that I love to play. The chorus goes: Make love to each other Be free with each other Be prisoners of love until you lie in the sod. Be friends to each other Forgive one another See God in each other, be beggars to God... I'm just as wordy when I'm performing as when I'm e-mailing, so I tend to pause between songs for introductions and explanations and silly jokes and such. Before I sang Beggars to God, I had this crazy idea to ask the audience who was there with someone they loved. They all raised their hands, of course, because who spends New Years Eve with people they don't love? So I told them before I played the song, I wanted everyone to look at the person or people they were with and say "I love you." Some of them looked a little shocked, so I acted real bossy and yelled at the crowd, "Do it! Right now! C'mon people, let's hop to it. You there, sir, I don't see your lips moving. Say it!!!" (I do corny stuff like that in my shows sometimes, although the "I love you" schtick just came to me at that moment.") They had no other choice, really. After my concert, this camo-man came up to me -- a burly, bearded, deer hunting, flannel shirt wearing, steak eating kind of guy wearing an authentic John Deere baseball cap with gold oak leaves on the brim. (Central PA's fashion statement.) He shook my hand and told me that he really liked my little "say I love you" thing and keep up the good work. He said he never thought about it before but it is something we all need to hear more. So, everyone on the list, turn to the person or people you love and tell them so. Do it! Say it! Right now! Prayers and regards for all. Hail to the Victors! >and today the big bowl game for me is the Citrus Bowl, my Michigan Wolverines versus the Auburn whatever they are. That will be my tense 3 1/2 hours today Hello Rev Vince, I must first say that I would have never entertained the thought of going to the Citrus Bowl today even though it's only 25 minutes away and only $10 bucks to park. I'm a huge Florida Seminole fan and not especially familar with "Northern teams." However, as a result of a remarkable accident (sort of), at 1:00 p.m. today (kick-off time), eight of my friends and family were smack-dab in the middle of a sea of Blue and Gold Michigan fans, and only one section away from their WONDERFUL marching band. How I love college bands! [Incidental, but important part of story.] After seeing "Cast Away" on Friday night, I was especially surprized when the FedEx man knocked on my front door very early Saturday morning with a FedEx Box containing an envelope with EIGHT Citrus Bowl tickets for this game. My father-in-law was sending us a couple of Citrus Bowl tickets through a broker as a surprise. Why? Who knows. Anyway, it turns out that the broker made a mistake and sent us eight tickets instead of two. When he realized the mistake, it was too late. Those tickets had a $60.00 face value! So then I'm on the phone trying to find 6 people who might want to go see Michigan vs. Auburn with us. > Lets Go Blue! It was a beautiful, cold and super fun day. I didn't even know that the name of Michigan's team is the "Wolverines." What a fun and classy bunch of fans! AND, what an incredibly exciting game! Many of Michigan's incredible plays, a lot of the scoring happened at our end of the field! At first I didn't know what Michigan's fight song was, and then the band struck up "Hail to the Victors"! I couldn't believe that not only did I know this tune by heart - I even knew some of the words. My husband explained that it's one of the best known college fight songs in the country, right up there with Notra Dame's. I bet you didn't relax until the last five minutes of the 4th quarter. I didn't. By the way - the Auburn fans were quite rude (booing a lot), and I just had to pull for Michigan, since they were surrounding us and blue gold are such pretty colors :-) The only bad part was the rapping boy band "Take Five" at half-time. >and if you saw the large Michigan Go Blue blanket I use as a wall hanging in my >living room, you'd realize my decorating scheme is revealing of my child-like fan->dom My husband has a lovely garnet, gold and white plastic Florida Seminole helmet lamp by his side of the bed, not to mention vanity license plate, etc. Congratulations to you and your Michigan Wolverines! BSN also didn't do it for me, though i completely dug the new version of 'both sides now', a song i haven't been fond of since i was about 10 years old. also haven't soaked up radiohead's "kid a" yet, but initial response is give me some "bends". some releases from last year that are still spinning - bruce cockburn's "breakfast in new orleans, dinner in timbuktu", ani difranco's "to the teeth" and last year a friend gave me billy bragg & wilco's guthrie thang "mermaid avenue" & that is sinking in like a stone (a 98 release). new blues discovery: corey harris, who is very taj mahal-like in approach. i've had three addictive phases this year - van morrison, especially 'the healing game' and 'no guru no method no teacher'; kate bush, especially 'the red shoes' and 'sensual world' and i had cassandra wilson's 'blue light 'til dawn' in the player for about 2 months solid (a very long time for me). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2001 03:32:11 +0000 From: Jason Maloney Subject: Re: the year in music (extremely little JC) I bought Shea Seger's CD The May Street Project today, on a whim..and because a lister included it in their year-end picks..I think it was Azeem?
