Joni - Both Sides Now - Not everyone was enthralled but I'll never forget how much it moved me on every listen. It's a classic in my book. And I still am enamored of that little candy box ;-) 2. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea - I have to confess that I never was much taken with her until this one, which is just a knock-out. Now I "get" it. 3. Steely Dan - Two Against Nature - Ah yes, as good, if not better than ever and tied with Joni for my best concert this year. (I thought they already were *in* the HOF!) 4. Kurt Elling - Live At The Green Mill - My most played of the year, sigh. Tunes by Shorter, Mendoza, Hendricks.... Lordy me.... 5. Tuck & Patti - Taking The Long Way Home - They are truly from another planet - pure gorgeous magic 6. Jean Monheit - Never Never Land - Thanks to Bob I flipped over her "Twisted" on the last Covers volume. Thanks to Mark in Seattle I flipped over the rest of the album. I just love her voice. Watch out Diana Krall. "Bootleg" category: 1. My biggest musical wish of the year fulfilled - All kinds of early Byrds demos, outtakes, unreleased on record thanks to Scott in Washington. (O.K. Mark and Scott, I know nothin 'bout football but I'll be rooting for U of W in the Rose Bowl just for you ;-) 2. Walecki Benefit - Thanks to Paz for his smooth persuasion in obtaining the complete set for me ;-) (Darice, Kerry, et al - copies will be in the mail soon now that I have a CD burner (yippee!) 3. All the Joni Covers volumes - thanks to Bob for all his dedication and work and to all the contributors - they are not technically "bootlegs" but they are just priceless. However, I desperate so i tried it out. Until then I was vegetarian and ate a low fat high carb diet. I felt awful most of the time. I had diarhea all the itme, I slpet badly, was irritable etc. Anyway, I changed what I ate. I switched ot eating only meat, fish, poultry, dairy and vegetables. nothing else. I didn't take the fat off meat, I use oil and butter to cook with. At first I felt much worse, Then I awoke one day and realised i had never felt so good. I have just had all my blood works back. I had a whole series of tests done at the beginning of the change and now again 6mths later. My cholesterol has dropped to near normal, my tryglicerides are low end of normal, thryroid is fine and my liver function is normal too! Allt his from eating a diet that is high in fat but low in carbhydrate.(oh and I also dropped 34lbs-although 7 of those have come back this Xams!) They are social comedies set in England from 1914 through the early 70s. Brit-ly understated and dry, but, to me, far more readable than EF Benson ("Lucia" was much better on TV than on the page--a horrifying thought, but so be it.) Powell follows a cast of characters that at last become as familiar as co-workers. I'll say no more than "recommended" for now. I think it's an important sidebar in Joni's career. In 1976, Toller had just won a medal in the figure skating category at the Winter Olympics. Joni liked his flamboyant, rule-breaking skating style and asked him to appear on the photo shoot for the Hejira cover. He is the male (so to speak) skater on the back cover of that album. Toller's description of the photo shoot, which took place near Buffalo, NY, is quite detailed and hilarious -- one diva meets another. About a year after the shoot, Joni invited Toller to a party at her house in LA. His description of that party is quite funny too. Unfortunately, Cranston does not mention the second photo shoot he did with Joni in 1980 -- a film segment of Joni, Cranston, and another female skater for the video Shadows and Light, which was deleted from the original video but is now available on the Japanese import. This film segment is truly horrendous and really spoils what for me is Joni's best live version of the song Hejira. When it comes on, I avert my eyes! Aside from other less consequential things, I've been preoccupied with concerns about my mom again. She has never completely bounced back from her health problems of the past year. Some of you may remember that she had a lump removed from her breast last spring and underwent radiation therapy. Prior to that she had undergone another surgery to repair some internal hernias in her abdominal region. She has never regained her strength and has lost too much weight for comfort. The oncologist and her gp cannot find anything physically wrong with her. There was only one tumor and she is currently free of the cancer. The weekend before Christmas, I called my folks, partly because I wanted to be sure they got their gifts and partly because my sister had noticed some odd things the last time she had talked to them. It turned out that Mom had been forgetting things - she had screwed up the check book a couple of times & lost a credit card without telling my dad or anybody else about it. Luckily no-one had used the credit card & my dad reported it lost. Dad was pretty upset & I could tell he was scared. So I called my sister and we talked about it. My sister is an RN and a very intelligent, capable person. She speculated that Mom was probably not eating right, maybe dehydrated and more than likely depressed. She called Mom's gp and arranged to get Mom in to see him. They did a brain scan and didn't find anything. The doctor agreed with my sister's diagnosis. Mom is most probably in the grips of a deep depression. My brother & sister-in-law who live in Omaha were at my folks' for Christmas and they agreed. The doctor said that Mom is not exhibiting typical signs of Alzheimers. My sister-in-law's mother does have Alzheimers and she agrees that Mom is not behaving at all like her mother. That is a tremendous relief in itself. My dad uses a walker and can't do much. Mom is too weak & depressed to do the ordinary household maintenance things she's done all of her married life. Relatives & friends have been bringing food in & Dad is trying to make sure Mom eats. But since my mom needs a geriatric specialist (she just turned 78 on Thursday the 28th), my brother & sister-in-law are going to find assisted living somewhere in Omaha so my folks will have a place to stay while Mom gets treatment. Unfortunately all of the bedrooms at my brother's home are up a flight of stairs and my dad can't handle that so this seems to be the logical solution. I will be very relieved when they are settled in to a place where they have help nearby 24-7. I have been very worried about how they were going to get through this winter which promises to be a severe one for the midwest. I'm also hoping that once they see what living in Omaha and living in a good assisted living facility is like, they might decide to make the move permanent. I think one of the main problems with Mom is that Dad retired but she never did. They have always had a very 'traditional' marriage meaning Dad was the breadwinner & Mom did everything else - cooking, cleaning, laundry, managing the money, raising three kids. I'm hoping my dad is beginning to realize that Mom worked just as hard (maybe harder) as he did during all those years and that she deserves a rest too. So once again I'm asking you all for your thoughts & prayers for my mom & my dad as well. I hope everyone's holidays have been special & happy. A joyous New Year and all the best to each & every one of you on this eve of the new milennium. Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 10:22:15 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Austin City Limits & Dave Matthews Last night I happened to catch the last half of an Austin City Limits that featured Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews, Patti Griffin & Julie & Buddy Miller. Unfortunately Emmylou did not sing lead on any of the songs in the last half which was a bit disappointing to me since I am currently in love with the sound of her voice. But the other performers were great and I think I might be falling in love with Dave Matthews. He & Emmylou performed a duet of 'Long Black Veil', a song that I've heard about for years but don't ever recall hearing before. It was very moving. I also love the duet Dave does with Emmylou on 'Red Dirt Girl', the sad & beautiful 'My Antonia'. One of those lump in my throat songs but then RDG has several of those. So what would anyone recommend as a first Dave Matthews cd? His voice is so soulful & expressive. I don't 'bond' with a lot of male vocalists but I think I could really get in to Dave (so to speak). It's more laid back than UTT&D, but in my opinion has much better songs than UTT&D. The first one, Remember Two Things, is pretty good, it's mainly a collection of live songs with a few studio tracks. It sounds very dated and I'd wish they would re-record some of those. Under the Table and Dreaming, like I said, is the one with all the hits (What Would You Say, Satellite, Ants Marching) so it appeals more to the teeny-bopper group. Before These Crowded Streets: I haven't listened to this one much, it tends to be more symphonic and less guitarwork. I think you would enjoy this one, Mark. Everyday is supposed to come out next February. I was tempted to get the prerelease copy but I thought it was better to wait. From what I've heard it's very different from what they've done in the past. So Crash or Before These Crowded Streets, those would be my two choices for you. Both CDs are really excellent. If you do pick up "Under the Table and Dreaming," inside the plastic cover underneath where the CD rests in the case there is a photograph of Dave with a child in his arms, the child is his sister Anne's son. Anne is the woman to the right with the short hair. During the recording of this CD Anne was murdered by her boyfriend, a victim of domestic violence. It is not well-publicized that Dave has donated a lot of time and money to shelters for battered women and for the battle against domestic violence. All the mega events. The Eiffel Tower, The Thames river. Unreal. 4) Y-2-K: The greatest single hoax ever perpetrated upon an entire planet. A Clintonian masterpiece. I had a 1990 vintage computer in my home office that I purposely didnt do anything to, just to see what would happen. Answer: nothing. Poof, fizzle wizzle. Of course some will claim that only through the herculean efforts of the Government beaurocracy did we manage to employ all the safeguards successfully? My mighty 386 15 years old pc stands in obstinate defiance of that assumption still operating glitch free and purring in the corner. 3) The revelations of the election: A 200 year old system still works precisely as designed by the founders. Not only that, but it successfully dealt with the specific human deviances for which it was designed to do and solved the problems that zealotry imposes into the system. Of course the people who all the time cheer 5-4 votes that favor their views as totally legitimate, are the very same shrieking the loudest today. The Federalist Papers should be manadatory in all the schools just so people understand what almost happened. While the media howled at the 5-4 decision that they said decided things they chose to completely ignore the concurrent 7-2 vote that what the Fla SC did was dead wrong and caused all the problems. 2) The wonders of the internet abounding: When I think back to three years ago and how limited was my AOL stuff compared to now its mind boggling. Napster to recipes. 1) New Orleans Pazfest. I had a ball just being there and seeing one of the most exotic cities in the country, met a bunch of really sweet people, was blessed in playing at an incredible night of music and hearing many things Ill never forget from some incredibley tallented artists. Of this wonderful time I have a few indellible mental images for all time. Theres sitting in the Club totally exhausted after listening to incredible songs from all the players for over 6 hours; coming down literally from adrenaline rush and feeling positively depressed for poor Bryan Thomas who was the absolute last last final final act with the impossible task of somehow pleasing exhausted people with totally fried ears. Only to watch him burn through the most amazing version of Black Crow and blow my mind. Off the Charts Bryan. Sitting under the "chigger trees" in Michael Paz backyard in the middle of the night in 80 degree temperature with all the friends and music of the listers talking with Marian in Vienna. On the 9th day God created cell phones. The afternoon at the plantation, laying on a bench with the sweet smell of the land, it was like being in heaven. Paul Prudhommes Jambalaya. Oh my God. Watching Queenie do her act and trying desperately to "wish" Wally Kairez into the club to see this incredible womans unforgettable act. Lastly, but not leastly, Leslie Mixon reading Jims poem to Wally Breese with the unforgettable lilting strains of Tiger Bones amidst the dead silence in the Howlin Wolf.Without Wally and Les Irvin none of this would have happened. Crash is a great one. I like alot of the songs on Before These Crowded Streets esp. Crush (not Crash) and The Dreaming Tree. The duo stuff with Tim Reynolds is simply stunning. I have lots of bootlegs if you ever get that far (he likes to play them different alot). I also have a video from MTV that I was stage manager on the shoot for MTV. He was a really sweet guy and I loved being on stage with them. The drummer i think is one of the best in the world. He can play so fast and with such dynamics (alot of drummers play louder the faster they play). Check out a song called Say Goodbye on Crash. The drumming on that one is amazing. I was about three feet from Carter Beauford when we were sound checking that song for the shoot. I read a great article/interview about Dave and when asked why he thought his songs were so popular, he responded, "Because they are all about drinking and fucking!". I screamed when I read that, but it's true he tends to gravitate towards very erotic lyrics and he always seems to be smoking drinking or getting high. I have a mp3 of the cut with ELH from ACL if you would like me to send it to you. It also appears on > two of his collection albums. According to the liner notes for Rhino's "Troubadours of the Folk Era, Vol. 1," Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was premiered in 1962 by Kitty White. The Rhino collection's version, also dating to 1962, is performed by Ewan MacColl's wife, Peggy Seeger, and is accompanied by Ewan on acoustic guitar. Although CDNow lists a zillion recordings of this tune, Peggy Seeger's lovely rendition is probably as close as we shall get to what was originally conceived, and can be sampled at CDNow (only on WindowsMedia format). River, Rainy Night House, Circle Game, BYT...Circle Game seems kind of appropriate for this occasion. I kind of really am making a fresh start this year as I've been out of work for a couple of weeks due to a severe sinus infection/breathing difficulty brought on(I believe) by too much exposure to sawdust(evil stuff). So I'll be hitting the pavement Monday, searching for that ever elusive convenient, low stress day job so I can continue working on what's really important :>) I better send this post off soon so I can have the distinction of making the first post of the new year! by the way...I'll be rooting for the Saints now!
