I'll elaborate...back sometime in the fall of '99, I was doing a trade with John, and he said that "all he had" to trade was a tape of Joni covers by Fairport Convention. I was delighted with the trade, and after I got it, decided to see if I could assemble a whole CD of Joni covers mating this tape with some odds & sods that I had (Cassandra, Bonnie, CSNY, etc.). I did and enjoyed it a lot, so much so that I offered it up for a "Christmas Tree" about a year ago. While the response was not overwhelming IN NUMBERS, those who were interested were very enthusiastic about it, so much so that it inspired Volume 2 which ended up being 4-CD's worth and eventually led to where we're at now, which is that I'm about to polish off Volume 13, our 16th disc!! SO, what I'm trying to say is...if you've partaken in the covers project and enjoyed it anywhere near as much as me, you owe a little "Thanks Mate" to our Uncle John in Sydney! Raffaelle has also made significant contributions. He shared the "Bird That Whistles" CD with me, and opened my eyes to the global coverage of Joni's music. Plus, with Zoobie he transcribed and compiled "Diary of a Decade", a great write-up of Joni's art exhibition in the UK. If you haven't checked it out at JM.com, you owe it to yourself to do so. Hope your days are golden, gentlemen...thanks for what you bring to the Joni community! His soulful vocal can wrap beauty around whatever he sings, and the lyrical message is certainly appropriate. "We are stardust, we are golden, we've got to get ourselves back to the garden..." there are not too many artists like Stevie Wonder who can unite and galvanize people like him! Did anybody else see the "Very Special Christmas" special last night on TNT? I watched it and taped it for a JMDL pal, and I thought it was great! Stevie did several songs, the strongest of which was the Charles Brown classic "Merry Christmas Baby", which featured Wyclef Jean doing some cool freestyling as well. Stevie of course played keys and sang, and broke out his unique harmonica sound as well. Even my son said "That guy is AMAZING"! And when the Special Olympics athletes came out, well I just turned into a blubbering idiot! I don't make New Years Resolutions, but I will get involved with this program in 2001... The gift of Optimism. Some people see hanger behind every opportunity and catastrophe behind every failure; others see excitement behind every risk and a chance to grow behind every disappointment. These people are successful in their work and in their personal lives, and it's their optimism that makes the difference. The gift of Enthusiasm...hard to define, hard to maintain, impossible to fake for long. Enthusiastic people are the ones who fire us up, energize us, help us see the positive side in any situation, and remind us that while temporary setbacks are not a big deal, even small triumphs are. They look on the bright side, as our grandmothers used to put it. They're positive, energetic, seldom self-absorbed and almost never gloomy... and the rest of us feel better just being around them. The gift of Laughter. A sense of humor is the single most effective weapon I know against self-pity, self-absorption and self-importance. People who can laugh easily and wholeheartedly...especially at themselves...are blessed indeed. The gift of Forgiveness. The resentment we harbor when we judge and criticize and hold grudges against other people corrodes our spirits, not theirs, ruins our health, not theirs, wrecks our peace of mind, not theirs. We must give ourselves the gift of forgiveness as well, because when we don't forgive ourselves for our mistakes, we allow guilt and self-loathing to poison our self-respect, self confidence and self-esteem. I wish for you that from this day forward you will be as forgiving and understanding of yourself as you are towards those around you. The gift of Perspective. Without this gift, most people simply cannot survive. Perspective is what helps us to set realistic priorities. It allows us to shrug off the small crises that we encounter at the rate of about a dozen a day and concentrate instead on what's really important. The gift of Wonder. I wish for you that you will never stifle the sense of wonder that you had as a small child, but instead will foster and nurture it. It's the childlike quality that allows us to be curious, creative, trusting and spontaneous. The gift of Self-acceptance. Let's stop wasting any of our precious time and energy second guessing and judging and criticizing the very person we should trust and support without question...ourselves. Let's start giving ourselves the benefit of the doubt, instead, start trusting our own motives and decisions and choices, needs and desires, goals and methods. The gift of Self-love. With this gift, you and I will finally know and believe that there's nothing inherently wrong with us. We aren't too smart or too dumb, too skinny or fat, too flighty or too responsible, too serious or too frivolous, too career minded or too domestic, too sexy or too frigid, too tall or too short, too dependent or too independent, too complacent or too ambitious...too anything. We're just right and while from time to time we may want to change some of the things we do, there isn't a single thing that we need to change about who we are. May your holiday season be filled with joy and hope, peace and love, sweet nostalgia and warm memories. And if you already have some of these gifts that I've wished for you this Christmas, just pass them along This was sent to me and I pass it on here. if only we all had these gifts. - -- bw colin colin@tantra.fsbusiness.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/tantra_apso/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000 12:23:59 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: december 23!!!!! njc In a message dated 12/23/00 4:37:33 AM Eastern Standard Time, wallykai@fibertel.com.ar writes: << happy birthday, my dear brother JOHN LOW!!!!!! >> I second, third, & fourth that!!! Hi everyone, I wish you all the most wonderful holiday possible. Your company over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable! My soul has been twice blessed knowing you. Tank you Kate for the sweet Emil update. But I must disagree on one point, Emil had Joni's full attention not out of the generosity of her heart, but out of the fact that Emil is an absolutely engaging person. What a great son you have. As much as I wish everyone here a chance to meet Joni, I wish everyone here had a chance to hang out with Emil for awhile. He reminds me of the best best friend a kid could have. "Take that, and that, bad guys. "(Superhero lingo...) Perhaps New Years will be a more appropriate time to get into this, but my, we have had an amazing year with the JMDL. Bitter sweet with the loss of loved ones. Our hearts made torn and empty. But sweet all the same. I was not able to make the Mendel due to financial constraints at the time, but I would have loved to go & bring my daughter Lindsey, who adores Joni as well.Lindsey is neurologically impaired,(autism) not physically disabled, but Joni's music seems to reach her like noone else. But,as I've mentioned before, I am a huge Neil Young fan, and so is Lindsey.Next to Joni, Neil is her favorite artist, so Emil & her have alot in common."After the Gold Rush" appears to be her favorite, but she also likes his newer stuff like "Silver & Gold".I'd suggest starting him with ATGR as well as "Harvest", then adding "Harvest Moon", "Tonights the Night","Zuma", "Live Rust"and "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere", to get him started. On "Zuma" is a song called "Stupid Girl", that Neil wrote about his good friend Joni Mitchell--it isn't meant to be an insult ,but advice to a friend to "start living again, forget about remembering" after a love she can't forget(James Taylor?). As far as your question about Neil's sons, from what I've read they don't live with him;one of their mothers is the actress Carrie Snodgras, who I know is devoted to her son & takes care of him herself. I can't remember who the other mother is, or how severely disabled the child is. I do know the son he had by Carrie Snodgras is wheelchair-bound, and has alot of serious medical problems.Thank God your precious angel is able to get around so well.Hope both of you have a wonderful& blessed Christmas! On my very first listen I was completely captivated by this music and just amazed at what Clark has created. I was going "wowwowowow" all over my house! This is totally original and beautiful music with a *very* strong Joni sensibility running throughout it, and shades of It's a Beautiful Day, James Taylor, a bit of Brazilian and, as Marcel and others mentioned, Brian Wilson. Like Scott, I am also amazed at the excellent production values - there is not one false step - they are perfect. (all that fighting with the producer certainly paid off, Clark!) I'm especially partial to the first half of the album which to me is the most hauntingly gorgeous and Joni-esque. My favorite songs are Matthew, The Sugar Zone, Rainbow on the Moon, Never Be Hurt and Most of All. Clark, I can't tell you how amazed and proud I am of you. I do know that both of them appear on the Past Masters Vol 1 disc, being that they were a single not on a UK album. They were recorded specifically for the German market during the trip to France in early 1964, at the same session that produced "Can't Buy Me Love." (Which was earlier than the rest of the sessions for A Hard Day's Night.) And yes, For You Blue is one that doesn't have the title in the lyrics. It's one of the George songs on the Let It Be album, and the b-side of Long and Winding Road. Other songs that don't have the title in the lyrics: Rev 9, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Wild Honey Pie, Yer Blues... funny that they're all on the same album. Reminds me of how several songs in a row on Blonde On Blonde have titles beginning with adverbs... Most Likely, Temporarily, Absolutely, Obviously..... ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #670 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
