Here are my favourites. Two Grey Rooms (Chock full of important and personal references for me.) Love Puts on a New Face (I miss your touch, and your lips so much. I long for our next embrace.......kills me every time.) Impossible Dreamer (Just a terrific sentiment and an 'eyes above the horizon' feeling.) Sunny Sunday (A shimmering little sketch.) Passion Play (Widescreen Epic and the first of a series, STB & TSOS, followed) Facelift (A Life Lesson) Stay in Touch (No doubt that's always been a tricky one for me.......ooh er, close to the bone again!) Man from Mars (Every time I think of you, swallowed by the dark. Love and loss - and all about a cat) Secret Place (More for the Music and not for PG's performance which is not to my taste.) Case of You (BSN - Okay, it pre-dates WTRF but this version is just so much more informed for me.) and all in my very humble opinion. JMDL Moments to remember : Wally passing Cambridge Joni-fest Meeting Sue Cameron and for giving me a serious craving to attend a fest States-side. Wally Kairuz - Babe Supreme JMDL Moments to forget Having to defend my mate, Willy the Shake's, frivolity on list - Jesus and Hitler and Howard Hughes etc. Good Grief! The animosity over the US Election Enjoy the holiday season, everyone. Take the best care of yourselves and those you love. Heading off list tomorrow and for Venice the day after. When students are behaving I don't have many visitors. Yesterday morning was like that, so I popped in DJRD. Half way through cotton avenue came David B., with his "bed-head" hair and one eye still crusted shut. I put him to work figuring out what he needed to do next time he was angry instead of namecalling. While writing his "plan" his head kept bobbing up. "Talk to Me" was playing. Finally he couldn't take it any more and had to remark to me that he had this music on one of his nintendo games. Of course this made me laugh so hard that I just about fell out of my chair. Poor David B., who really doesn't have much of a clue to begin with, was speechless. Joni sounds like nintendo muzak? I don't think so! Let's hope so. She was someone who fellow artists and many critcs held in very high regard, and also the kind of act who bubbled under the consciousness of the record-buying public - never really selling huge amounts or charting with every release, but always liable to have a hit every so often. Her Best Of collection in '95 sold around 200,000 copies, which was one of the more pleasant surprises that year. No doubt Fairytale Of New York (which I agree is the finest Christmas single ever) will now be re-issued. It always was a popular track, cropping up on Seasonal collections and getting airplay at this time of year. You have been a good supporter of the project from the get go, and probably hold the record for the most distant contribution as well as sharing the great Joni jazz covers from Jacqui Fitzgerald! I'm also anxious to hear the Reprise issue, I can only imagine what Stevie Wonder will do with Woodstock, and to hear Elvis Costello take on a Joni song will be pure bliss! He's been too quiet anyway! And speaking of Joni Tributes, I did in fact get the "Came Upon A Child of God" CD yesterday. The first time I listened to it I was very disappointed, but now it's begun to grow on me. The first thing I noticed was the AMAZING lack of information. I expected to see some kind of dedication, or write-up on how the project came about, or something, but the insert just lists the songs! Doesn't even state who's performing them, and there are various performers...I'm gonna have to the covers database to see who performs what! They list a website on the insert, www.dressed2kill.co.uk, and I went there last night but I guess it didn't load properly, because I couldn't find any info about this disc. But they do have some weird CD's! Especially tributes, to some pretty minor players if you ask me. And they have some interesting artists as well, bands with names like Fucking Pigscab and such...I wish Pigscab had put a Joni cover on this disc, it might've made it more interesting. The CD is certainly not without its highlights...there's a nice version of Chinese Cafe, with a male vocal (shades of Paz!) Great to hear someone doing a post-70's cover. Also a wonderful slow finger picked version of "Chelsea Morning" which seems to keep switching keys, but it's very nice. They misspell Carey as "Cary", and the singer sings "Map of the moon", instead of "Mattala Moon". Plus, there's a cover of Help Me, which would seem an obvious choice as it was Joni's biggest "hit", but it actually rarely gets covered. All in all, 2 and a half stars out of 5. One consolation is that it's pretty cheap, the CD sells for $6.97 + shipping from Amazon.com. She happily got dressed& ate breakfast . Last night, in the tub, she started singing , " In France They Kiss on Main Street" and sings the "Downtown" part quite loudly, & then sang the rest of it with Mommy helping her.She LOVES watching Joni on video, and sings along, of course, then goes up to the screen & KISSES Joni. So I say to her, "Lindsey, do you love Joni like Mommy does?" and she says, " Yes, Mommy, Lindsey looooves Joni !" She is just too adorable for words. Joni, I'm sure, would love her, too. Although I put it on the cheesy collection, it's really OK and actually gets a lot of credit for taking Joni's song into a whole 'nuther genre. Besides that one, if you define Green Day as Metal (I don't) they do a sped-up live take on BYT that's a lot of fun. Victor Johnson Is that on a Beatles' album? I don't recall it; maybe it's on a Harrison album. In any case, despite your apparent confidence, that also is a WRONG answer. The correct answer is a much more well-known song from Side 2 of possibly the Beatles most-popular album of all. Hint, hint. It may not be the answer you had in mind but it is not a "wrong" answer because none of the Beatles played any instruments, only actual indian musicians, so it definately fits the criteria. This song was released as a single in 1968 in England and later appeared on the Rarities album. Your question is therefore invalid and needs to be changed as there is apparently more than one song on which the Beatles did not play any instruments. Eleanor Rigby does not work because the Beatles played along with the strings. Revolution #9 contains tape loops on which instruments had been played. Hint, hint. > > Paul I You are probably thinking of "Within You Without You", from Sgt Pepper, however George played sitar and 'a dash of acoustic guitar' on it. So in answer to which song was the only one in which no Beatle played an instrument, four actually qualify: The Inner Light-which was the B-side of the Lady Madonna single (now avail. on "Past Masters vol 2" CD), recorded in India by Indian musicians directed by George. Good Night-Orchestra and Ringo's vocal. Eleanor Rigby-String quartet accompaniment. She's Leaving Home-String section accompaniment. Revolution #9 does not qualify; John played Mellotron on it. Information is from the acknowledged authority, Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles Recording Sessions". Lewisohn was given free access to the EMI vaults; master tapes and documentation, he also conducted interviews with the engineers, producers, McCartney, and others. Even better, the evening's entertainment will be provided by our very own Chuck E and his rockin' good times band! The same trio that blew that room away during Jonifest in September. Woo Hoo! May will be serving up a delicious buffet starting at around 7:30, and Chuck and the fellas will play from around 8:30 to 1:00 a.m. All this for a mere $20 per person. May would love to have as many JMDLers as possible on hand, so come on down if you can. There may even be a few slots available for performers to do Joni songs prior to the band going on, just like at this year's Jonifest. Call Atty. May's Beachcomber at 978-462-9201 for reservations. May says that the Walton Motel on Plum Island would be a good place to stay over, if you wish.
