It usually takes me at least 4 listens before an album sinks in and I usually decide it is the best they ever id. This time tho I had to listen many more times. It was not what I was expecting at all. However, it did sink in and I really love this album. of course it is different. How could it not be considering the changes within herself since LNS? Cancer changes people. It changed her and she wrote about it. The only song I really dislike is the last one, In Honour Of You,George. Scar is beautiful. We Your Dearest Friends is excellent and not about JT. Rather it is about fairweather friends. I particulalry like the edge to her voice on this track. Actress is funny and again not about herself totally(it is based on an overheard converstion between two young hopefulls). She has lost none of her wit or song writing ability. As often her words are cutting, bitchy, amusing, sad. This is not a light album and I think it couldn't be expected to be. I also can't really compare it to her earlier works as it is so different. I like the fact that this one is not so full blown, production wise, and there are no belters on it. VChristpher, i think, spoke of LNS and his two favourites being Like A River and Touched By The Sun. I'd add Lost In Your Love to that. Touched is one of my all time favourite songs by anyone. Coming Around Again, whilst it contains dsome good tracks, is too commercial pop for my taste and her least personal in my view. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here. I read a review by a pratt who had obviously not listened to it as he said there was no melody(!) and was full of self pity. he just didn't get it.(mind you this same person wrote reviews of other cd's and films and was negative about all them-trying to boost his own self in the wrting of them). - -- bw colin colin@tantra.fsbusiness.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/tantra_apso/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 07:00:17 -0600 From: mags Subject: Re: Today in Joni History - December 2 Stephen Epstein wrote: > < saved, cause the Toronto concert was the first time I saw Joni- @ the > Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens. I feel sorry for my mistake, because I was only stoned by my stupidity when stating that Ramona is the Austrian version of Joni Mitchell. Of course, every human being is unique in the vast cosmos, so that my A=B comparison is inadmissible. However, I think that one can find some similarities between Ramona and Joni in different musical dimensions of comparison. Sometime during Ramona 's Woodstock song interpretation in Nov. 2000, I had a flash of inspiration that it was possible to invent a theoretical concept for a new hippie movement (the so-called starflowerchildren or starchildren). Now, I am trying to convince myself that it is possible to do that, but I also see one fatal error of the old hippie movement that died around 1970 (see e.g. Joni's Blue song): Heavy drugs were set in and flower power was over. So, I think drugs should be replaced by a healthy meditation technique. The so-called mystical experience (many hippies know what I am talking about), can also be provoked by the appropriate meditation technique instead of taking hallucinogenic drugs. This experience is characterized by a drastical release of very basic distinctions (e.g. the self-world distinction and the past-future distinction). This is a feeling of wholeness or unity between the self and the cosmos (the so-called oceanic feeling). Of course, there were also other major factors that led to the decline of the movement. But the new concept of starchildren, starflowerchildren, children of supernovae, and starstuff-everything is, more than we care to realize, a cosmopolitan idea, rooted in Manhard Schlifni, Joni Mitchell, Ramona Kasheer, Heather Nova, Carl Sagan, Rupert Sheldrake, Immanuel Kant, Cyber-Hippies, Woodstock, Cosmology, Astronomy, Chaos Theory, Feminism, meditation, spirituality, humanity, New Age, participatory Democracy, collective consciousness, vegetarian food, Greenpeace, Club of Rome, love energy flow, noave stars, red giant stars, supernoave stars, the Planetary Society, and the United Federation of Planets. Special thanks go to Joni for the invaluable impulses of her Woodstock song. Joni's music has touched my mind, heart and soul. I am so happy that - in the infiniteness of time and the vastness of the cosmos - I can share the same planet and the same epoch with Joni. I try not to break the NJC rule, so please pass this on to anyone on the "Joni-only" list who might appreciate it. ______________________________________________________ GRACE AT MCDONALDS...... This is a good story, please read it all the way through. (After the story there are some very interesting facts!): I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called "Smile." The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally. Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing special play time with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch...an overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a horrible "dirty body" smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was "smiling." His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance. He said, "Good day" as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally deficient and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation. I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, "Coffee is all, Miss" because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm). Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Thank you." I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, "I did not do this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope." I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, "That is why God gave you to me, Honey. To give me hope." We held hands for a moment and at that time we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give. We are not church-goers, but we are believers. That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love. I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I turned in "my project" and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, "Can I share this?" I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God, share this need to heal people and be healed. In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my husband, son, instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student. I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who may read this and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE. If you think this story has touched you in any way, please send this to everyone you know. There is an Angel sent to watch over you. In order for her to work, you must pass this on to the people you want watched over. I'm wondering whether we're all getting mixed up over what exactly makes a long o and a short o. To me, what Kerry said makes perfect sense. To me, Cat Stevens DOES sound like he's saying "lah-ry" in "Where do the children play?" which, to me, sounds a bit more like a short a, I guess. And, to me, Lori, gory, glory and sorry all rhyme and I wouldn't exactly call it a long o OR a short o, so I'm confused too. Maybe it's more like a medium o! A short o is like the o in cot or bought. A long o is like the o (with some help from a) in coat or boat. A long o is kind of like an o sound with a w sound after it. When you put an r after an o, it changes the sound of it, but I wouldn't call it long OR short. And I'm not from Wisconsin. They're blaming some of the weird weather we've had here (cool, rainy summer; a winter that arrived too early, too cold and with too much snow) on something called the Hudson Bay Vortex. Now, really, people, has any of you ever heard of this so-called vortex before now? A few years ago, it was El Nino this, and El Nino that. Then they came up with La Nina - if El Nino is named after the baby Jesus, who the heck is La Nina - his twin sister? And what exactly is Global Warming, anyway? I think we're just going through a cycle and if you were able to look at it over a long period of time, it would evolve into some kind of pattern that we just can't see because we're too close to it. Let's face it, weather pretty much sucks, especially at home. How often do you hear anyone saying, "The weather here has been really great. Not too hot, not too cold, just the right amount of rain, and my allergies haven't been bothering me for ages!" It's my understanding that the Hudson Bay Vortex is the exit ramp of the Bermuda Triangle ... a place where WWII fighter and reconnaisance planes, Bahamian fishing boats, flocks of extinct bird species and strange giant statue heads suddenly appear for no apparent reason, and in defiance of scientific explanation ... A few years ago, it > was > El Nino this, and El Nino that. Then they came up > with La Nina - if El Nino is named after the baby > Jesus, who the heck is La Nina - his twin sister? La Nina is also called The Communion Reflex ... caused by those noxiously dry little wafers that perpetually stick to the roof of your mouth just at the entrance to the throat. Of course, what that has to do with the weather I'm sure I have no idea ... Hope this helps clear things up ... and glad to hear that your allergies aren't bothering you! ;-) Don Rowe ===== Visit me anytime at http://www.mp3.com/donrowe Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. The most recent video tree features "Ashara's Wild & Crazy Adventures" in Maidstone, where she was treated to the Joni Mitchell Museum (actually just a corner of the Maidstone museum). Anyway, in the video are some photos of Sharon and Joni as wee tykes, as well as the church referenced in "when we were kids in Maidstone Sharon, I went to every wedding in that little town". If you don't have the latest videos, I'm sure if you ask someone would step up and hook you up... Song For Sharon partially refelected on a paradox; that being that Joni dreamed of being a wife on a farm, and Sharon dreamed of being a singer. It turned out the other way around, although Sharon did become a singer on a more local basis and even recorded "Both Sides Now" under her married name of Sharon Veer. When I saw Joni perform the song on her '98 tour (the only performance of SFS), she introduced it as "Song For Sharon Bell". I was delighted to hear it as I love all of Hejira so much and SFS in particular. I feel pretty fortunate to be a part of this group, despite these little shortcomings. Atlanta looked beautiful today, covered in snow. We haven't had this much snow since the blizzard of '92. I've been enjoying it especially since I haven't been to work this week.
