ALSO, i'd like to point out, in case some on the JMDL aren't aware -- there is an album out of aimee's "greatest hits" called "the ultimate collection." this is a collection she had NO control over -- the record company (hi-lo?) got a hold of some way to publish her stuff, via some odd (but not for aimee) arcane legalese, and when approached by aimee and her manager, rebuffed all their attempts to recommend songs, avoid terrible, badly produced live versions and b-sides, etc, and help with artwork. the company also printed snippets of aimee's published comments with each of the liner notes, so for all the world it APPEARS that she was intimately involved with the project. on her website she writes a pained, eloquent request of fans not to buy this record -- since she considers it to be far from her own work. isn't that depressing? and something that joni would FLIP OUT OVER? so i thought i'd pass it on in case anyone was interested. i can't remember if it has been raised here. hence: my total bliss in the entire package of "bachelor #2"-- no quirky retro crap from '70s groups for kitsch effect -- no stolen material --only one artist's well-wrought vision. an entire album that is composed in the album form, changing and shading from song to song. yes, i miss "one" but i would NEVER NEVER opt for "magnolia" over the total musical joys of "world's own optimist" "susan" "how am i different" and one of the best songs i've ever heard in my life -- "red vines." i hear this in my sleep, i hear it in my head (if i'm lucky), i sing it to people, i'm just so glad it exists. that sounds over-the-top, but i truly couldn't rave more. "bachelor #2" is creeping into my inner world's soundtrack. if anyone is on the fence -- i hope my ridiculous plug here will push you off it and make you buy this wonderful record. god knows a whole bunch of my "aimee who?" friends are getting it for the holidays. - --emily NP: JM "the boho dance" (sounding so good this morning) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 08:07:55 -0500 From: "Megan" Subject: Xmas with Louise-NJC I was in NYC this weekend & just got back--Couldn't stop laughing after I read your post! Are you sure "In the current issue, Popular Photography say that digital will equal the quality of conventional 35mm film cameras when they are capable of storing 6 million pixels. That is way, way more than is captured by the current crop of digital cameras priced at about $800 (USD). (At that price range, they capture about 3.3 million pixels.)" Comparing digital and film cameras is a bit like comparing apples to oranges, imho, because generally they represent totally different markets. I would never use anything but a digital camera, for the following reasons: 1. I don't need 6 megapixels, or even 3.3 megapixels. I rarely need a "hard copy" of my photos, and I never publish them. Mostly I post them on the web or email them to friends, and my very cheap (now less than $250) digital camera, with only 1.3 megapixels, is more than up to the task. 2. I've saved lots of money with my digicam, because I never have to buy film. I use rechargable batteries, and if I do run out of space on my flash memory card, I plug in a spare or download my photos to my laptop. Even without my laptop, I can take a hundred high quality shots before I'm out of space (and battery life.) Also, I can preview an image with my camera's built-it display, and if I don't like it, I can delete it and have room for more photos. 3. Since I do a lot of digital touch-up work to my photos with Photoshop, it makes sense to start with a digital image rather than having to scan it. And there's no waiting to have photos processed by Wal-Mart with a digital camera. And again, no cost involved... I think the vast majority of people are better served by digital, and that's only going to become more true as the technology gets cheaper and better. - -John in NC ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 07:39:39 -0800 (PST) From: "Lori R. Otoh, my digicam (a $400 Hewlett-Packard Photo Smart) has pretty much become my main camera. It's similar to one of those inexpensive 35mm cameras that average people use to record average events. It has only a 2x zoom, a timer, a few flash options, and 3 choices of resolution. Depending on which you choose, the memory card (which can be replaced, although I've never bothered to check the cost) will hold between 10 and 80 images. Ive had several other cameras, all Pentax, and a variety of lenses over the years. I used to be into photography as a hobby but have set it aside, mainly due to lack of time and Because "Procrastination" is my confirmation name ; ) , I've wasted a lot of money over the years on film that just sits around waiting to be developed. If I do manage to get it to the developer before the photos fade, the price for developing is always a shock. With my digital camera I can at least "develop" the photos almost instantly and send them via email to my mom and friends. If I don't get around to developing them right away, I don't lose picture quality. Since the camera holds just 80 shots at most, I eventually have to download the photos in order to clear the memory card and use it again. Yesterday I saw an advertisement for an HP Photo Smart that looks a lot like a real 35mm camera, with the ability to change lenses. I have no idea what the max resolution is, and Im sure the cost is outrageous but since I believe my digital camera is one of the best purchases Ive ever made, I want a better one! The sampling rate is higher than that of a "normal" CD. Now, the audiophiles will probably tell you that, without a CD player that has the higher sampling rate D/A converter, you won't hear that much of a difference on a "regular" CD player. But since I'm a mere mortal, I will say that in the process of creating HDCD, the original source tapes are digitally remastered. This, in itself, produces a usually much clearer, cleaner and more defined soundstage vs. the original CD release of a given album. The main reason for this is that, when CD was "brand new", a great many releases were sloppily and hastily digitized to fill the product void. The Fleetwood Mac catalog is notoriously atrocious in this regard -- but the Joni HDCD reissues are uniformly superior, again, at least in these normal everyday guy's ears. Hope this helps. HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) is a patented encode/decodeprocess for delivering on Compact Discs and DVD-audio the full richness and detail of the original microphone feed. "HDCD Becoming Popular Standard" -- Billboard Magazine Over 2,000 HDCD recordings have been made by leading mastering studios around the world. More than 150 HDCD recordings have appeared on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and over 80 HDCD recordings have been nominated for Grammy Awards.(View a list of the HDCD Grammy nominees in 1998, 1999, and 2000). "Everything everybody was complaining about digital, HDCD cures." -- The New York Times HDCD encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20-bits of real musical information, as compared to 16-bitsfor all other CDs. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional four bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the existing CD format. HDCD provides more dynamic range, a more focused 3-D soundstage, and extremely natural vocal and musical timbre. With HDCD, you get the body, depth and emotion of the original performance -- not a flat, digital imitation. "With HDCD, digital officially races ahead of analog in a way anyone can hear, not just golden-eared audiophiles." -- Rolling Stone Magazine HDCD recordings will always sound better than conventional CDs when played on any CD player. You will hear fuller, richer sound on all types of players, from portables to high-end systems. This is why so many top artists and engineers use HDCD. To bring out the full bandwidth and superb fidelity of HDCD recordings, a player with HDCD decoding should be used. You will be amazed by the dynamic range and resolution produced by decoded HDCD recordings. "...HDCD is a significant advancement in digital audio sound quality." -- Fi Magazine Pacific Microsonics' PMD-100 audio chip, which includes HDCD decoding and HDCD filtering, is a world wide standard in high fidelity audio systems with over 100 models of HDCD equipped players now available from leading consumer electronics companies like Denon, Harman Kardon, Rotel, and Toshiba. Recently, leading audio chip manufacturers, including Analog Devices, Burr Brown, Motorola, Sanyo, and Zoran licensed the same HDCD technology used in the PMD-100 todevelop HDCD chips for the general audio market. These new chips will be used in a wide range of playback products such as DVD players, A/V receivers, Mini-Component systems, MiniDisc players, and CD players, changers and portables. And, best of all, the HDCD decoder chip used in consumer products also contains the HDCD high precision digital filter which improves the sound quality of all types of digital audio recordings. This means that any A/V receiver, CD player, DVD player and Mini Discplayer equipped with HDCD will produce significantly better sound from your entire collection of CDs, DVDs and MDs. Lee Feigon is a professor of Chinese history at Colby College. As a sinologist I can't help but think that if the events of election eve had transpired not in the United States but in a place like China, voters and TV viewers would not have been surprised by the results. As confusing as things might appear to Americans, the explanation would have seemed obvious to anyone used to a more authoritarian tradition of leaders: The Bush family rigged the results. Consider the family's background. George W. Bush's father is not just the former president of the United States but also the one-time head of the CIA. As secretary of defense in Bush's administration, Dick Cheney was responsible for the National Security Agency, a spook organization more powerful than the Central Intelligence Agency. Jeb Bush, the Republican candidate's brother and governor of Florida, spent years living and working in South America, where elections routinely have been manipulated by American-trained operatives. Now remember what happened on the evening of the election. Every television network called Florida for Gore about 8 p.m. The Bush camp quickly protested, arguing the returns from absentee ballots and rural counties might yet be different from what the networks had declared. Jeb Bush, we were told, was on the phone with Florida desperately trying to find extra votes. Many of us wondered: "What was Jeb Bush doing? The votes have already been cast." Then the votes the Bush people had predicted suddenly began to appear. By 2 a.m., the networks were calling the election for Bush. In a twist that many Chinese might be able to appreciate, this result was also not to remain in place for long. If clever operatives had fiddled with the election returns they would want the predictions to change back and forth a few times so it would look like the problem had been caused by the experts at the networks not by someone playing with the results? The focus on uncounted and difficult to use ballots in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties would be the perfect smokescreen to keep the attention off chicanery elsewhere in the state. Couldn't this explain why the Bush side didn't want to accept Vice President Al Gore's offer of a statewide recount, even when it appeared in their interest to do so? "Nah," I think. "These kind of things don't happen in America." But the sinologist voice in the back of my head keeps working. If this were China I would look for indications that the family had used their spook connections to manipulate other events. Didn't someone do a pretty good job covering up George W. Bush's absenteeism from his National Guard duty? For years the record of his drunk-driving conviction remained suppressed. He even got out of the rehab program everyone convicted of drunk driving in the state of Maine was supposed to attend. There's also that supposedly determinative first presidential debate. Shortly before this debate, videotapes of George W.'s preparation sessions suddenly arrived in the office of Gore's debate coach. Rather than run the risk of appearing tainted, the coach removed himself from Gore's debate preparations. Gore's performance suffered. The story was that a disaffected worker in the Bush camp probably sent the tapes, but the person still hasn't been found. All this doesn't add up to a hill of beans. This isn't China. Only someone like me would even think about how after the elder George Bush lived in China in the 1970s, he restarted a previously dead-end political career. Even I won't make anything of the fact that not long after that his once good for nothing elder son made a fortune, got elected governor and then became a candidate for the presidency. It's a good thing we don't live in some country where all this would be looked on with suspicion. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 18:46:13 EST From: Fonimitchell@aol.com Subject: Happy Christmas! Now really, rev, surely you know by now that the elction was completely above board, that Bush won the election because many more people voted for him than for Gore, that the Supreme Court justices may have been conservatives, but totally unbiased and only pinkos could possibly think that this was not a fair result. It really is time that the pinkos got their heads around the fact that the Right are RIGHT all the time and that the information we have that contradicts the right is just a load of propaganda put out by the pinkos to fool us. which as the Right keep telling us is very easy to do because we don't think and we have a world view that is psychologically whacked and spiritually bankrupt. Really, I am completely red in the face and nervously laughing. I was going to say you made my day, but it's more like you made my month. Thanks so much for listening, but more importantly for really listening, for getting what I was going for. I placed the song "Salt Water" exactly where it is because it was the shift into a different set of songs, the beginning of the comedown. And you are right -- it's the first song on the CD that goes deeper, is more honest. I had to honor Joni as the inspiration for this album because my guitar playing has a debt to her, especially in the first few songs I wrote which use some of the same tunings and have her penchant for drone strings. I hope someday to record another batch of songs. The latest ones are off in some direction even I didn't know about and I am using my pinkie more -- Most of Joni's chords involve only 2 or three fingers. It's the right hand which is the tough part when you try and play her songs. Man, I can't thank you enough for your kind words! I recorded these songs hoping that someone might pay attention, and your response made me feel that all the time, money, and nearly violent fights with the producer were worth it. I would also encourage every one on this list who ever wanted to record his/her music to do it, for yourself if no one else. It's one of the best things I have ever done for myself and very satisfying to know someone else "gets it." I'm crazy to get into this again, but here are the facts that most of the news media do not emphasize (indeed, most of them had no clue what the ruling meant until a few legal scholars explained it to them awhile after the ruling came out). 1. Bush won because he won the most electoral votes 2. The Supreme Court voted 7-2 that the method of re-recounting in the 3 counties was unconstitutional because it wasn't fair (no standards in "divining the intent of the voters", selective counties chosen rather than all counties, etc.). Of the 7 justices who decided this there were 2 liberals, 3 conservatives and 2 moderates (who switch between liberal and conservative in their rulings). In another part of their ruling, they voted 5-4 against doing the re-recount because of the legal deadlines. In their previous ruling 10 days prior to the final ruling, they vacated (threw out) the Florida Supreme Court's initial ruling and clearly asked that court to come up with a clarification as to legality. The Florida Supreme Court never responded to the U.S. Supreme Court until they were in deliberations 10 days later on the second matter. Even when they responded, they did not set out constitutional standards for the manual recount and did not clarify their initial ruling. Had the FLORIDA Supreme Court responded swiftly with legally solid standards, perhaps there would have been time to do the rest of the manual recount before the deadline came up. Maybe some should argue that they could have moved yet another deadline for Gore, but he'd already had one moved for him, and at some point it is the responsibility of his lawyers and the court to have gotten their act together. > I have seen the light. i finally realised that our own right >wing fundy(you know of whom I speak) was truly sent by >God to show us the light. I don't know how the "fundies" break down politically in the U.K., but here they have always been a small segment of not only the Republican party but also the population at large. The Republican party has also turned many of them off in recent years and I've heard they have formed their own "Constitution Party" at this point. Every Republican I know, from every age and walk of life, is a liberal socially. In fact, the only religious fundamentalists I know are staunch Democrats, I swear! I'm up WAY past bedtime, watching I Love Lucy and finishing up some holiday gift CD burning. Evian wrote "I wanna ask people's opinions of The Bedroom Tapes. I really enjoyed it, although it took awhile, and it still doesn't live up to Letters Never Sent or Coming Around Again, my two fave Carly albums" I LOVED "The Basement Tapes", and though the disc certainly doesn't live up to the polished perfection of "Coming Around Again", I find it to be a more personal and musically interesting recording; as far as "Letters..." is concerned, I think "Basement" blows it right out'the water. With the exception(s) of "Like A River" and "Touched By The Sun", with that beautiful intro piece by Ben Simon, I found "Letters" to be choppy and difficult to listen to and enjoy. Unfortunately, over time, I didn't find that it improved with wear. On the strength of your humble opinion, I will continue trying. But "Basement" is wonderful, and didn't make it to my top 10 2000 mainly due to a number of very strong surprise releases toward the end of the year (BSN didn't make it, either, now that I think of it...). Tracks like "Big Dumb Guy", "Actress" and "We Your Dearest Friends" (my fave track on the CD) show Carly trying new avenues with her music, even if the themes of (like betrayal and fantasy) are recurring in her writing. "Scar" is a beautiful way of communicating about her health crisis, and "Our Affair" an all-Carly straight ahead radio rocker. I was quite satisfied with the disc, but I know several folks who reacted like your wife. Wonder what bugged them so? Jason asked me where I'd heard of Lazy Dog, the ongoing DJ project of Ben Watt (from Everything But The Girl) and Jay Hannan, his spinning partner. I frequent the EBTG website, Jason, and have been a big fan of theirs since "Eden" was imported when I was 14. I'm not much for the DJ/mixed-style releases myself, but this IS special...lovin it! As for the Cocteau Twins compilation, I'm a long time big fan there, too, and am only sorry it doesn't look as if there's any new material coming. I think the twins may be defunkt. (sigh!) Finally, I have to say how much fun I'm having here in my little CD factory...burning in and of itself is a bore, but playing with artwork and labelmaker is a blast! Between images on the internet and my scanner, I'm enjoying the career in album cover art and layout I've always wanted but never had! Merry Merry, Chris.
