I was very taken by the album and played it a lot believing that this group of songs could never be bettered by anyone. The whole collection really connected with me. But of them Hejira, the song, connected to most securely. It was late March and we had a lot of snow lying deep and dry. Where I come from, on the coast, it doesn't snow a lot and stay. But this year it did. My gran had recently died giving me my first close encounter with mortality. I was awash with teenage melancholy - it was great :-) As was my way - ever the loner at that time - I would take off for walks into the hills and forest behind our village on the weekend. I can very clearly recall, trecking one Sunday morning up into the first set of hills on which a golf course had been built. Under the thick blanket of snow, the fairways glowed in the early morning and low winter sun as they rolled down to the village and the sea beyond. The whole landscape bathed in an almost blue light. The Grampian Mountains blue some fifty miles distant. From there I descended to the river crossed, this far up stream, by a small ironwork bridge built during the second world war. It served to support an oil pipeline. Somewhere under these hills were buried enormous storage tanks for oil reserves used to supply the Royal Naval fleet moored back then at the nearby deep water port of Invergordon. Across the bridge, I was immediately inside the forest. Dense with Larch trees, their branches hung heavily with snow. The light wind would carry off a fine spray of the chyrstalised water into eddies and clouds as I tramped through the undisturbed whiteness along the river's edge. 'Listen, strains of Benny Goodman coming through the snow and the pinewood trees.....' You bet. Jennifer Kimball played for 15 years with Jonatha Brooke, beginning when they met as Amherst students about 1982. I had to share this with the group. I am a visual artist and huge fan of Joni Mitchell. Her lyrics, paintings and music have had an impact on finding my direction as an artist. What I wanted to share was this, my art work, including the Mitchell inspired pieces are making a huge impact! I have just received confirmation of a show at the Sedona Arts Center, plus I am talking to a Gallery in Scottsdale to represent the work. If that is not enough, I am still selling work from my last show in Phoenix. One of the first drawings to sell from my show was "Jericho." This drawing featured a blonde woman playing the guitar, with all original text created by me! If you are familiar with the cover of Mitchell's first recording "Joni Mitchell," you can see the lyric almost fairy tale quality of the work. I have several other Mitchell inspired drawings including one that took some inspiration from the cover of "Chalk Marks in A Raing Storm." While it is hard to see the connection, my colorful drawing features a face hidden behind a brown fedora set againts a turquise blue sky. I am so excited by the new work and the fact that it is selling well. Keep in mind, these images are not taken directly from Mitchell, nor do I use her text in my work. I just found her work as a source of inspiration. In much the same way Mitchell was inspired by Jazz, Miles Davis, Blues, Judy Collins and her folk based earlier work, I am finding inspiration to find my own voice. Natalie Merchant said it best wehn she said, and I am paraphrasing " ... Joni Mitchell painted created songs that told of an exotic exciting life and that you too could lead a life that was exotic as well." I am not attempting to become Joni Mitchell, however I can sing a version of Jericho that would make you feel something, but rather looking for ideas and finding my own exciting exotic life. Life really is a banquette. Some get the gravy, some get the gristle some get the marrow bone, but if try real hard sometimes you get what you need. Take care email me if interested in seeing the new work. I have yet to put the recent ones on the web. It seems that it is getting worse. He has sent this farewell letter to his friends, which has been translated and posted on the Internet. Please read and forward to any who might enjoy it. This is possibly, sadly, one of the last gifts to humanity from a true master. This short text, written by one of the most brilliant Latin Americans in recent times, is truly moving. _______________ If for an instant God were to forget that I am rag doll and gifted me with a piece of life, possibly I wouldn't say all that I think, but rather I would think of all that I say. I would value things, not for their worth but for what they mean. I would sleep little, dream more, understanding that for each minute we close our eyes we lose sixty seconds of light. I would walk when others hold back, I would wake when others sleep. I would listen when others talk, and how I would enjoy a good chocolate ice cream! If God were to give me a piece of life, I would dress simply, throw myself face first into the sun, baring not only my body but also my soul. My God, if I had a heart, I would write my hate on ice, and wait for the sun to show. Over the stars I would paint with a Van Gogh dream a Benedetti poem, and a Serrat song would be the serenade I'd offer to the moon. With my tears I would water roses, to feel the pain of their thorns, and the red kiss of their petals... My god, if I had a piece of life... I wouldn't let a single day pass without telling the people I love that I love them. I would convince each woman and each man that they are my favorites, and I would live in love with love. I would show men how very wrong they are to think that they cease to be in love when they grow old, not knowing that they grow old when they cease to be in love! To a child I shall give wings, but I shall let him learn to fly on his own. I would teach the old that death does not come with old age, but with forgetting. So much have I learned from you, oh men... I have learned that everyone wants to live on the peak of the mountain, without knowing that real happiness is in how it is scaled. I have learned that when a newborn child squeezes for the first time with his tiny fist his father's finger, he has him trapped forever. I have learned that a man has the right to look down on another only when he has to help the other get to his feet. From you I have learned so many things, but in truth they won't be of much use, for when I keep them within this suitcase, unhappily shall I be dying. GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ - ------------------------ A QUICK BIO ON THE MASTER: Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez began his career as a Journalist for a series of liberal South American newspapers in the late 1940's. Although he toyed with fiction as a young man, his first true efforts were incited by the negative reviews of contemporary Latin-American writers. The result was the short story The Third Resignation. The reviews of the story were positive and the impact strong; the press heralded The Boom, a second generation of Latin-American writers. Garcia Marquez followed with a compilation of short stories (Big Mama's Funeral) and three novellas (Leaf Storm, No One Writes to the Colonel, and In Evil Hour). These dark, eerie, and sad works were influenced heavily by Franz Kafka yet the reveal the voice of an intelligent young writer preparing himself for larger things. Larger things came to Garcia Marquez in 1967. While suffering >From writer's block several years earlier, the author suddenly had a vision of his next novel -- as he has said, the first chapter was as clear as if it had already been written. The idea was to tell the story of several generations of a Colombian family as his grandmother might have told it: supernatural occurrences and unbelievable events described with unblinking sincerity. After eighteen months of seclusion, Garcia Marquez produced his Masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude, which has been called one of the greatest novels in history. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 19:07:20 +0000 From: catman Subject: Re: irregardless/regardless NJC > I was reading over the digest earlier, and realized > that now everyone is probably confused about how I say > my name. Like Colin, when I said Law-ree, I meant something that rhymes with glory (so I did have it right, I just couldn't work out how to describe it)! But our word for truck, ie. lorry, rhymes with sorry, and so does Laurie. I have a friend named Laurie, and that's how his name is pronounced. Bloody confusing, isn't it! This time around, I have my website, so I will most likely do some kind of feature on there, with my top films and CDs of 2000 included. Was a funny year, especially in the UK, where the difference in what was around, and what was successful, grew wider than ever. But more of that another time. Thanks to your recommendation, I checked out that free Q CD and as a result I got the Goldfrapp album, because I fell in love with Utopia on first listen. I ordered the Fiona Apple CD last night, as at this time of year I always seem to go on a binge of buying all the recommended albums that people have singled out over the previous 12 months. See also : Badly Drawn Boy, Kelis, Eminem, Foo Fighters. I must get the Aimee Mann, though. I make do with Magnolia, which is an awesome collection of songs, but I really ought to have Bachelor #2 as well. What's the Shea Seager album like? I'm curious about this one..I might put it on my post-Xmas shopping list if I know what to expect. I just wanted to send out the message (especially after my miserable concert experience last week) that the web-only Rickie Lee Jones "Live in Portland" CD, available through her website, is WONDERFUL. It actuallyis a nice companion piece to the "Naked Songs" release, even though a fair number of tracks overlap, in that the full band arrangements are quite good, providing a busier sound than on the other title. Also, Jonatha's new release "Steady Pull", due on Feb 13th, is now being advertised on HER site (her own, not Rickie's ;~>), and advence ordering will begin on the first of January. A new Christmassy download is available of Jonatha's version of "Emmanuelle" and you can also see a new 'Making of the video' vid clip as well as the new cover art for the forthcoming CD. Had to share. -Chris PS. That tribute CD "Came Upon A Child of God" hasn't shipped to me from Amazon yet, but now you can sample the first half of the tracks if you search for it on the Amazon site. Sounds OK...nothing earth shattering, but it'll throw me a bone while I (We) wait for the reprise release.
