I have some leaves to report to: videos have been dubbed (thank you Ashara!!) and will be in the mail very soon, certainly in time for Christmas. I'm so very sorry for the delay!! Many emails have been lost during the latest purge: if you are expecting a Video Tree from me, please email me again with your address so I don't forget you!! Sorry for taking up bandwidth!! While I'm at it, I might as well admit to a guilty pleasure. The Bee Gees. Love 'em. When it comes to harmonizing, they're just as good as the Beach Boys. When it comes to collaborative songwriting, their '60s work is excelled only by Lennon and McCartney. (How's that for opinionated???) When it comes to re-invention, they way surpass Madonna. Actually, it isn't a guilty pleasure. I admire and respect the Bee Gees. So there. Presumbly it depends on how big they are? How much would it cost per year to run this particular website? and some ideas (maybe naive, but what the heck?) - - What about corporate sponsorship? You may be plagued with a lot of ads, but it's easy enough to disregard them. What about Joni's recording company? (downside - I presume they'd want to exercise some kind of control over the content and there goes freedom of speech). What about internet CD companies? If, for example, CD-Now and others are willing to kick back some of the profits to the jmdl and jonimitchell.com, could they perhaps be persuaded to provide more, in return for more plugging of them as *the* source for all sounds Joni? - - Or how about a pledge drive similar to what PBS and others do? (Again, how much does it cost to run these things? I'm guessing Jim and Les provide their time at no cost (?) Is the cost of administering a trust fund of some kind to collect funds going to be too great to support the idea of people donating? And, of course, everyone's financial situation is different, so ability to pay would not influence whether or not someone was able to get access - it would have to be strictly voluntary. - - How about if those who provide the CDs/tapetrees added a surcharge of say $1 or $2 and that amount would go to the websites? Is that feasible? Finally, is there someone we could e-mail to register our extreme discontent with their arbitary decision to simply pull the plug on what is an amazing and award-winning website? Colin: I agree with your above statement. This subject is something I know more than a little about.I have been a Registered Nurse for the past 24 yrs.,& 20 of those yrs. have been spent in Critical Care(ICU) nursing.I went into this profession with the most altruistic of motives: I care about others, wanted to genuinely help them, & wanted to alleviate their suffering.Every day I go to work, people's lives are in my hands. I quite literally, on an almost daily basis, bring them back from the dead by resusitating them in a medical crisis. This is an awesome responsibility, one that is motivated by my desire to help others, but by something else as well:(and this is very hard for me to admit) The feeling I get when I help them or alleviate their suffering. Most nurses I've known(esp. those who work in the E.R. or ICU) admit there is a "high" they get from helping others, a euphoria from both the knowledge they've helped someone, from the approval of co-workers and physicians for a job well done, as well as the feeling they get when they see the gratitude in their pt.'s eyes and their families for all they've done for them.So you are right Colin, when you said,"To desire to relieve that suffering in others is to relieve the suffering in ourselves" I cannot begin to tell you of the pain I have been in when, despite all of my efforts, a patient dies under my care, even if death was imminent and I was more than likely powerless to do anything to prevent it.So it is MY suffering, as well as my pt.'s , that motivates me to work even harder ,to strive to be a better nurse, so that next time I step into a pt.'s room, I can actually prevent that suffering & dying, or at least make them more comfortable, so I can feel better about myself. And when you say," it is not possible to be truly altruistic because we get back what we give." you are right because I have always received far more in return from my patients than I have ever given them, & most of them will never know that.Even though I always felt my motivation came from something good inside myself, if I am to be completely honest about it ,it also comes from a selfish one: to prevent my own suffering and to feel the euphoria I get whenever I save a life. But even with my selfish motives, the end result is still the same:suffering is relieved,& people's lives are saved.I am not a saint, only human and as much good as I may have done for others, they have given back ten times that amount to me in return. Thanks for the honest perspective. If we help people out of a desire to feel better, that is elfish and will rebound on us in that what we get back will also come from a wrong motive. However, when we act out of compassion with no thought for ourselves, then we get back somethbning good. So even we act unselfishly, we still reciebve. Strangely, the more we act unselfishly the more we benefit! It is natural you would gte a high from helping som one. Yiu are human as you said. But I am sure that was not your main motive. I help thru a helpline for survivors. i do it cos I have been there and I know how little help and understanding there is. i too get a high when i feel I have helped change someones view of themselves. But that isn't the motive. It is the side effect. 12 step groups are fond of saying that you can't keep what you have unless you give it away. i have found that to be true. It wouldn't work to go around giving it away JUST because you want to keep it. This is much easier to undrtand inside than it is to explain in words! bw colin ps I happen to think nursing is a most undervalued but most valuable proffession. I even still have the tour shirt I bought(and wore to school the next day along with a dozen other people). I was thinking how nostalgic it would be to go a heavy metal show and pretend that I had slipped back in time 15 years. But the one thing I remember from that show is that it was way too loud (even for heavy metal) and in a way it seems sort of comical, to go see these bands now in a small club, being that Dio has always had somewhat of a big ego though I imagine it's somewhat deflated now.
