A lot of us on the list have bought Joni items from eBay. My experience (and I think a lot of others) as an eBay newbie is to tend to pay way too much for the items. For me, the excitement of finding all these neat goodies in one place after so many years made me initially get carried away. But after spending way too much on a few items, I learned that the key is patience and resistance to letting someone lure you into a bidding war. Just about every Joni item you see on eBay at any given time, will come up again and again. Set a limit on how high you will go and stick to it and play the waiting game. I've paid over $50 at times for songbooks that later were commonly in abundance for around $10. eBay is really not too bad - I've bought or sold over 50 items there and have never had a bad experience. Since I don't have any money, I'm not buying posters on eBay. Therefore I'm not your competition. And you do not represent competition to me, so I'll advise. Notice though Christopher, that you are asking other Joni fans (read: your competition) for advice on how to beat them in an auction. My brother taught me that the trick to winning is not to constantly lead the auction. The way to win (ie. to get the stuff without paying too much) is to "snipe". You schedule your day around hovering over the computer _as your target auction closes_. You log in minutes before the close, opening one browser session to observe the price (using the Refresh key, naturally). In another browser session you prepare to bid, hovering over the Enter key that will send your completed bid. You bid once, hitting the enter key only seconds before the auction closes. My brother, a former used car salesman, suggests using one email address for your "nice" bidding practices and second email address for your "snipe" activities. He explained that he was able to steal an auction from a friend whom he'd promised to never bid against. He didn't get caught. Nice guy, eh? I just about jumped out of the car with excitement!!! (however, I maintained a cool exterior!) He likes the fact that she dares to be different. When you're bidding-- its very rare that you can be at the computer the instant the auction ends. So when I find items I'm interested in-- I bookmark them, and then try to come back just as the auction is ending. The chances of the current high bidder actually watching the auction as it ends are so low that if you put in a bid during the last few hours or minutes of an auction-- you're almost never out-bid. Patience is key, also. If you watch item on Ebay-- you can get a feel for what price they will yield. Thus-- you know when you're getting out of hand. Perhaps Ebay addiciton is best expressed in this article from "The Onion" produced here in Madison. I've enjoyed listening to it all weekend, and a big thanks to all who contributed. My favorites are Acoustic Nuisance "BSN", Michael Holland "A Case of You", Linda Ronstadt "River" (FANTASTIC), and I forgot that Glen Campbell is really a good singer. His version of "BSN" is absolutely beautiful IMO. I would have thought he would have been on the *cheesy* covers, but it's a wonderful cover. It's too bad his one time ex-love Tanya Tucker (one of my fav's) didn't put out a Joni song, i.e., "Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire". Of course I've already raved about JMDLer Marcel Deste's cover of "I Think I Understand" and "Rainy Night House" since I was lucky enough to get his CD at the Laborday Joni fest, but it was great that Bob put two of his songs on the covers CD. Gorgeous tunes Marcel (and for those who don't know it, his real name is Honk Reuter and he's a 63 yr old closet democrat :~D ) I liked Jane Monheit's cover of "Twisted", but if I were gonna include that Ross/Gray tune, I would have put Bette Midler's version on a covers CD as well. AND speaking of Bette, she does a great cover of "For Free". Not only did I get to hear Bette on this covers volume, but Santa Bob sent me a video of Bette singing "For Free" back in the days when she was performing at the gay Continental Baths with Barry Manilow playing the piano. What a great video Bob!!! (and Byron, I hear this is all due to your contribution!! Thanks a million!!!) Hope everyone had a nice weekend! First of all I4d like to thank Bob, Don, Ashara and Garret for such a warm welcoming >to this wonderful, prolific, crazy list of Joni lovers! We are a >motley crew, but most of us are harmless enough. ;-) !! (courtesy of Ashara) Let4s see - it4s 2AM, I4ve just poured myself a drink and want to catch up with my mail. The full moon is shining outside my window and the stereo is playing "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey". Can you think of any better song for the occasion? It4s kind of spooky, isn4t it? At the time, when I only owned "Hits" and "Misses", it was a real relief to hear the opening tones of "The Magdalene Laundries", even though that one is pretty dark too. Yes, I discovered Joni through her compilation albums. Both Bob and Garret recommended them when I asked what album might be best for new listeners. Well, they certainly worked for me. But nowadays I feel that neither "Hits" nor "Misses" do Joni any justice. I mean, most of her albums are based upon a certain subject and express a certain mood. That4s why I think the compilations are a bit confusing. (I4m sorry, it4s a bit late and I don4t seem to be able to express myself any clearer tonight...) My own suggestion was TI, which Bob thought was "a little too dark for new listeners". Well, thank you Bob!!!!!!!!! You gave me a great idea! You see, one of my friends is quite "dark". I mean he4s very sensitive and listens a lot to more or less depressing music. At the same time he4s rather restless and has a high interest in literature and the arts. So why not go the whole way and give him "Hejira" as a starter?! I4m (almost) convinced he4s going to love it. Anyway, we4ll find out on Christmas Eve... Don, you wrote that you >hooked the most "unitiated" new listeners with >"Night Ride Home." I think it combines a perfect >blend of jazziness, acoustic guitar wizardry and >lyrical strength that opens the door most easily to >the rest of her catalog. Thanks to you as well! I went to a birthday party a couple of days ago and got the host - who4s not so dark -:) - a copy of NRH. I haven4t spoken to him yet but I4ll let you know whether he liked it. By the way, this guy was not completely unfamiliar with Joni4s music. As a matter of fact, he had heard a compilation of Swedish artists doing their own (Swedish) versions of some Joni songs. I didn4t know there was any such album, but it sounds interesting, doens4t it? - Oh, and Don, I love the expression "unitiated new listeners"! I study social anthropology which deals a lot with rites de passage. I guess you could say that getting your first Joni Mitchell album is like an initiationrite that takes you from a state of darkness and ignorance to a world filled with light, beauty and wisdom. - OK, maybe I4m overdoing it now... I guess I should really go to bed now. Just one more thing. Garret, you wrote that you > don't know if Miles of Aisles or Don Juan's have been >taken out of euro circulation. but i do know that one >can't ever seem to find them here in Ireland. Well, I finally found MOA as an import CD. Apparently, all of Joni4s albums are available in Europe, but many record stores just don4t have them in stock. It4s especially tricky to find MOA, DJRD and SAL, but one can order them (as an import double-priced album). Well, that4s all for now! I4ll smoke a cigarette now and look at the moon. "Once in awhile in a big blue moon there comes a night like this..." Good night to you all! Dirk PS: Lately I4ve been having trouble accessing the JM website. Does anybody know if it4s done for maintainance? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 21:08:08 -0800 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Frustration With Ebay...VLJC 1. I have been outbid in the last few seconds of an auction on more than one occasion. Keep the item in a separately opened window so you can refresh it alot. Unfortunately, ebay servers can be very slow or even stop working at times, other times they are fine, so it helps to have a fast connection for this type of bidding. 2. Give yourself a limit on what you will pay for an item, and stick to it, within reason. 3. You can find some great bargains on ebay, but you need to be familiar with the value of the items. The new Hendrix 4 cd box set sold for $51.00 on ebay. Amazon had it for $49.99. 4. ebay is the ultimate flea market/garage sale/collectors market/classified. However, since Amazon's auction site is smaller, sometimes you can get stuff cheaper there. Apparently, the good folks at ClearData.net have decided they don't want the Whole Earth/GST business after all and they just cut us all off -- no notification letter, no courtesy call, no nothing! Their web site isn't operational, their voice mailbox is full and just hangs up on me. I finally managed to get somebody on the phone who brusquely informed me that "we're not servicing you anymore," but didn't offer any help. Isn't this illegal? It certainly should be! I can't believe this is happening. And I'd just put up that great picture of Joni from the cover of Toronto's Elm Street magazine. Sigh, rant, sigh. So now I have to find an ISP that won't charge me multiple limbs to keep JoniMitchell.com up and running. Apparently the server that has all the site files on it has been sold off to a company called Valuenet. I'm going to see what they can do; with luck I'll be back online soon.
