I even bought the Gerry & the Pacemakers vinyl AND cassette a few years ago just to have this. This was an anthem for me in my developmental youth. Thanks for posting the lyrics - I'd love to learn this one on the guitar. I'm not especially an RLJ devotee but would love ot hear her cover of this one (and love her covers on the new album - her cover "On The Street Where You Live" devastates me. Linda's cd is just a hair over 45 minutes & Emmylou's only a bit over 30. So to fill in the B side at the end of Emmylou, I created my own EP preview of Joni's Christmas album. I started with 'Chinese Cafe' then segued into 'River' and finished up with 'Face Lift'. Haven't listened to it yet so I don't know how well it flows but in my head anyway, it sounds great! I really like Linda's take on 'River'. The orchestration really adds something, I think. I'm gaining a whole new appreciation of this song although it's never been one of my favorites. I think it was in the introduction of 'Scoundrel Time' that Rand's testimony is mentioned. She testified about a movie called 'Song of Russia' that portrayed our Russian allies in a favorable & heroic light. This positive portrayal was of course called into question during the McCarthy madness. Rand testified that the film was obviously Communist propaganda because it showed the Russians smiling and went on to say that people in Soviet Russia didn't smile. 'If they do, it is privately and accidentally. Certainly, it is not social. They don't smile in approval of their system.' Just the other day I was remembering a time in Toronto- 15-20 years ago, when I was walking along Yorkville Ave. In the 60's is was the Canadian Haight Ashbury, and Joni, et al, played frequently @ the Riverboat coffee house. A tall, slim woman w/slightly permed hair and amazing angular face- was just sitting on the steps up to a store, and I almost died! I was convinced it was Joni!! I contemplated what I should do? What would I say? I mustered up the nerve to approach her, and the only thing that came out was "Is your name Joni?" Rather infantile, I suppose. She replied no, and I said something stupid like are you sure or really?. Anyway, I walked away convinced that it was she, and to this day, kinda think it really was! Glutton for punishment that I am, I tuned in to Digital Club Network's surprise live webcast of RLJ's show tonight at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC. This was truly meant to be, boys and girls (and you, Wally, r-u- reading this???), because she rose from the dead tonight! I turned off all the lights in my living room, sat back and let Rickie perform with much more spirit and enthusiasm than last night - the setlist was completely worked around to include Trouble Man, Low Spark, Skeletons, We Belong Together...it was as if last night never happened (even though we all know it did and most likely will again..). Before she played The Magazine, Rick informed us that the song was a play she wrote about a woman walking away from a heroin deal on the Lower East side of Manhattan, "Magazine" being the brand of smack stamped on the glassine baggy. She said the girl in her play is fantasizing about how one day soon she'll be able to walk through those same streets without ever thinking of why she was there at that ugly moment....so therefore, it is a song of great joy. She closed with 2(!!) encores, "Cloud of Unknowing" and "Running From Mercy". The whole thing filled my heart with happiness and a sense of (perhaps false) closure. This was meant to be. -Chris ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 01:34:05 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: the phoenix (NJC) old soul chris wrote: >>>Last installment, I promise! I think Pj harvey is a wonderful performer, eventhough she claimed to be coming out of a cold. It was at the TLA in Philly which is on south street (an electic fun street of shops and restaurants galore). Her set, contained most of the material from the new album, but all well done. And her guitarist was cute. I was impressed becaues she does stand out a bit from other performers in the 90's and the 00's. I was a little dissapointed only because i made in my mind that she was like a new incarnation of Patti Smith.and that she would be shaking and writhing all over the stage, but alas, i enjoyed myself thoroghly, and some of you may have and will too? :) songs played 66 promises, C'Mon Billy, Send his Love to Me, Man-size, Dry, Big exit, Good Fortune, A place called Home, One Line, Beautiful Feeling (with keyboards added to a great effect), The whores hustle and the Hustlers whore, Kamikaze, This is love, and two other songs i didnt know. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web.
