Most of the people on that list are very young. I think jmdl is great and I am happy to read the political content (even though some hostile attitudes get rather tiresome!)... but just a word out to say that on some Tori Amos lists that I am on the average age is probably 20 or a little higher and there is plenty of political conversation (this month: are embargoes moral, should convicted felons be denied the right to vote, chads chads much ado about chads, etc). There may be a lot of apathy on the Janis Joplin list but to assume it is *because* list members are young is to forget about the many many politically apathetic adults... And it is to minimalize the many contributions of young people to civic life. Perhaps we should discuss why youth don't turn out to vote in large numbers... I think it has something to do with lack of power... a culture in which disparaging young people is normative and mostly unquestioned... etc. More of my two cents, Yael, ally to young people ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 17:30:45 +0200 From: "Greer, Ron" Subject: SJC - SPC (Some Joni, Some Political) hi first the gross part - politics. we just had our local municipal (town council) elections here. everyone was really happy cause things went really smoothly - only 6 people murdered........ (and you thought your politicians are slime) now the music part. suitably inspired by all the raving about hejira ( i was gonna just use the initial, but then i realised youd probably all think im a junky) i went out & bought a copy. the only joni albums ive had up to now were s&l, byt (big yellow taxi - what appears to be a spanish reissue of lotc with dubious sound quality), c&s, blue, ttt, ti, & thotsl. of these, shadows & light was by far my favourite. not any more...... hejira is awesome - its been playing pretty much non stop since last thursday & just seems to get better all the time. i always loved "amelia" - this version is awesome i feel sorry for the other bassplayers on the album. hearing them back to back with jaco makes them sound so ordinary......... i think jaco would make virtually any other bassplayer sound flat - he makes sounds that bass players arent supposed to. actually, i suppose there are other bassplayers that play like him, i just havent heard them. larry carltons lead is inspired. any suggestions where to start if i want to check out his solo work. ive always heard him highly recomended, but somehow havent come across much of his work. perhaps the album should be referred to as jjl (joni, jaco & larry) seeing as "h" is gonna be somewhat misleading. ron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 08:02:06 -0800 From: Louis Lynch Subject: RE: John Galt, Ayn Rand, etc.,NJC Hi all, My comparison of Ayn Rand to Joni Mitchell was in no way sarcastic. And, I considered it a compliment to Joni. You can call Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism heartless and lacking in compassion. That's easy to do while sitting in our cozy armchairs of touchy-feely political correctness. We've been taught that we can't even use the word "mankind" without offending women, we can't call a person with dwarfism a dwarf, etc., etc. For generations, we have been trained that "insensitive" and "selfish" are the worst things people could ever be. To people who really buy into that, Ayn Rand must seem like a total AntiChrist. But she had a lot of compassion. And she was very keen on the rights of people to be themselves -- women were equal, people of alternative lifestyles or consciousness were totally free to express who and what they were. Remember that Ayn Rand escaped communist Russia. She was writing during a period in America's history in which people were being molded by extreme patriotism and persecuted socially if they failed to conform. McCarthy was attacking communists, the rise of commercialism was attacking free thought and artistic expression in general. People were encouraged to live in similar houses, wear similar clothing, think similar thoughts, enjoy similar affluence. Those were the days when being different was dangerous. Ayn Rand spoke out against it, all of it -- she smacked the "star-maker machinery behind the popular thought" right upside the head. Something tells me that she would be pleased with some of the strides we have made in ending prejudice and discrimination -- but she also would be totally disgusted with the sugarcoating and hypocrisy that still exists. Like Joni, Rand hated hypocrisy. Both have been quick to point out that a lot of human politics espousing compassion are very similar to a western town on a Hollywood set -- the buildings look good on the front, but there's nothing but two-by-fours propping them up. Rand had high and lofty ideas about true love, artistic expression, individualism, standing up for what is right despite what "other people" think. Her heros in Atlas Shrugged were creative -- they created something new and different, whether the critics liked it or not. Frankly, there is no musical artist in our generation that falls in line with Ayn Rand's philosophy as much as Joni Mitchell. Joni is one of the most outspoken writers of our time in any genre. She dared to speak her mind on so many topics, just as Ayn Rand did. (She also has a bit of a cultish following, just as Ayn Rand did, too.) The song Shadows and Light is almost a primer in the basic philosophy of objectivism. Magdalene Laundries, Tax Free, For the Roses, even Big Yellow Taxi, and so many others scream Joni's disgust with the dullness of the masses -- "if it's not hot in People magazine, then it's not hot with us." To me, Joni's social commentary is almost identical to Ayn Rand's, even though some of their little details may vary. Neither one of them pleases all of the people all of the time. Given their generations, I would say they are very similar thinkers. Rand promoted sensible selfishness in a period of senseless altruism. Joni promoted sensible altruism in a period of senseless selfishness. Both were great artists who were brave enough to speak up. Ayn Rand had a sense of romance that was very heady and intellectual -- not nearly as sensual as Joni Mitchell's. Rand had no compassion for people who refused to grow. Rand might have come off as a bit snobbish or cold, but then she wasn't looking at life from both sides of the outlandishly rose-colored love-and-peace glasses the hippie generation was wearing in the 1970s, either. I would recommend reading "We the Living," a very short novel that delivers a major jolt about the human soul. I feel the same kind of jolt from a lot of Joni Mitchell songs. I forgive Ayn Rand her comments about atheism, too, for some inexplicable reason. Regards, Harper Lou ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Dec 2000 21:23:10 -0500 From: "C.A. It would have been a great plus if this little visit with Richard had happened before I ran into Joni in S'toon this summer. In jogging Joni's memory of Sid, I should have mentioned the Spikedrivers rather than only giving the physical description of Sid as a Jerry Garcia look-alike to ring her bell. (Geez, I just hated taking up her time, you know? ;-( ) Had I known more details of the Spikedrivers at the time, I could have possibly solved the mystery of Richard's identity for us and him too. (although he didn't seem to be at all haunted by not knowing.) I would have liked to have seen Joni's facial reaction when I gave her Richard's last name. Sigh.... >It's fantastic that you have struck up a >friendship with these two early Joni pals. I gotta say, I think one of the reasons Richard was as open as he was, was because of our give and take about our most recent Joni events, Toronto (him) and S'toon (me), within the first minute of our conversation. He appreciated and related to my relaying of how I very consciously steered clear of hounding, pestering, or trying to "catch" Joni in S'toon, when I probably could have made for myself plenty of real opportunity, and also just how deeply bothered I was to realize what Joni, the living, breathing person, is put through because of her icon status and the effect she has on people. He said, even he, a legitimate old friend of hers, had had his reservations in Toronto too, for all my same reasons, when weighing if he wanted to try to get his note backstage to Joni. So I think knowing, right from the get-go, that we shared a common ground dislike for anything that remotely resembles "star stalking or obsessive fans" (his words), was a real plus for our visit. ;-) >Maybe we should all collectively write the >next Joni biography ;-) Haha, well at least for now, don't expect to much contribution from "my sources". ;-) To get an idea of Sid's personality and manner, imagine if you will, what it would be like trying to have a good, free-flowing conversation with comedian Steven Wright when he's got on his stand-up persona. ;-D I know Sid's got some fascinating tidbits in him, not just about relaying early Joni stories, but he had mentioned to me years ago, dinking around on guitars with Dylan in NYC, but to drag it out of him would probably be a torturing experience FOR ME. LOL! He'd rather talk about himself, so I'd end up having to constantly re-direct his focus and be pushy and probing to get to the JC - and to be pushy and probing just ain't me. By far, Richard would make for the more enjoyable and enlightening JC conversations - I gathered that he had had a strong affection for her. So hopefully I'll get another chance to visit with Richard if he comes to see Sid again. ;-) However, Sid did say he would write up something and send it for me to share via e-mail, but knowing Sid for about ten years now, I'm not holding my breath. ;-) Oh btw, Richard has a WONDERFUL singing voice. When I was there, Richard and Sid were rehearsing to play for either an open mic or small gig Sid had arranged for that night. They performed for me one of Richard's tunes - - I thought lyrically it was kinda weak, but their guitar work together and Richard's singing were beautiful. >Thanks for sharing, You're welcome - it was my pleasure. ;-) Penny Yahoo! I, too, got a jolt from Rand that was similar to the Joni Jolt but over time and with more exposure to life, I still believe that Rand lacks a great deal of compassion, heart and soul. While much of what you say is very true, there is certainly much, much good in this "political correctness." Without some mode of "pc," we'd still have places named "N***ertown," phrases such as: "jew them down," and other words and terms that become such a part of everyday speech that people can hide loads of malevolent action behind it. Rand also practiced the same brand of PC; it was just tailored to her philosophy. >> But she had a lot of compassion. And she was very keen on the rights of people to be themselves -- women were equal, people of alternative lifestyles or consciousness were totally free to express who and what they were. Funny, though, how both heroines of her two major novels, Dagny and Francesca, had their major "passionate" awakenings from a sexual encounter with the heroes that could be construed as rape. Interesting, though, how the women were nearly always darting about in thin strapped heels, wearing suits with sheer blouses. Many of her female heroes barely stepped out of any constricting mold. (perhaps their shoes pinched their toes and made stepping difficult). >> Remember that Ayn Rand escaped communist Russia. She was writing during a period in America's history in which people were being molded by extreme patriotism and persecuted socially if they failed to conform. Umm, to the best of my knowledge, Ms. Rand testified for the HUAC hearings. Having no problem with "naming names" of people who failed to conform to HER rigid standards. >>> Rand had high and lofty ideas about true love, artistic expression, individualism, standing up for what is right despite what "other people" think. Her heroes in Atlas Shrugged were creative -- they created something new and different, whether the critics liked it or not. Unfortunately, her high and lofty ideas were pretty much devoid of compassion for people with normal, everyday faults. Perhaps a bit too dependent, perhaps a bit too needy. What the heck? Life is for learning and there but for the grace of God go I. >>> Rand had no compassion for people who refused to grow. Here is a foundation of Rand's biggest weakness, at least in my mind. Having "no compassion for people who refused to grow," treads dangerously close to no compassion at all. Have a little heart. Why can't they grow? What's the obstacle? Sometimes, growth happens not in this life, but in others. Sometimes, the best test of a quality person is the compassion and love that they hold in their hearts for people like Toohey. This inability to have and hold a true form of unconditional love is what makes Rand fall very, very short of being a great thinker. In my opinion, of course. Yes, it was a great post. I'm always amazed by so many of you who can remember and recite in depth the books you have read. I practically wrote a thesis on Rand in both high school and college, but much of the details have faded from my memory. Harper Lou brought up the very good point that she served to champion the individual at a time when perhaps the culture was moving toward a type of "group think" conformity. In that way, I think she is an important "prophet" of the 20th century alongside Joni. > I, too, got a jolt from Rand that was similar to the Joni Jolt >but over time and with more exposure to life, I still believe >that Rand lacks a great deal of compassion, heart and soul. Arguably, one could say that she must have had some kind of compassion to be able to write about the human condition in such a deep, insightful and compelling way. But it seems that her "precepts" do not factor in the randomness of compassion and spirituality in the total equation. There are factors beyond the control of any set philosophy, including hers. > Umm, to the best of my knowledge, Ms. Rand testified for >the HUAC hearings. Having no problem with "naming >names" of people who failed to conform to HER > rigid standards. Didn't she start out as a screenwriter in Hollywood? I think that was her first occupation. I think she also was an actress for a time. Because of her position in Hollywood and the fact that she had just come from communist Stalinist Russia and was vehemently anti-communist/anti-totalitarian, she was probably ripe to have been friendly to the HUAC at that point in time. I tried to pitch my show on doing a Christmas in New Orleans show (thinking that Joni might get the Christmas album out this year), but I did not get alot of positive response. Hopefully it will be next year and I will have a shot a Joni show in New Orleans with the Philharmonic here and guest artists. Treacy" Subject: Poor, Poor Rickie Lee (NJC)..Long Review of Tonight's Show Well folks, I just got home from the Rickie Lee Jones show here in Boston at Berklee Performing Arts Center. This is my 3rd RLJ show, the first was at the same hall in 1994, and was a much better show. Back then, I was in the front row, and RLJ was in unbelievably good form, thin, radiant and COHERENT. Since then, I saw her once again in support of "Ghostyhead" at the historic Paradise Rock Club; this show kinda' doesn't count because it consisted only of material from that recording, so I cannot gage the performance as relative to others, being only moderately familiar with the material. I found RLJ's show tonight to be genuinely moving, but not in the way that I, or any of you, might normally expect. I was moved out of a concern for the wellfare of a performer whose voice has haunted two-thirds of my short life. As I watched Rick clumsily stumble through my new binoculars, I could feel her desperation - I can only pray the she gets sober one of these days. It doesn't look like she's having fun anymore. She had cups of whatever she was drinking stashed in several places on the stage...they seemed to materialize out of nowhere, and when the set was over, there were 4 of them littered across the top of the piano, along with a glass tumbler full of something brown on ice. Rickie took the stage looking bloated and tired, launching into the title track from "Ghostyhead", then playing "Roadkill" and a track in the same musical vein I didn't recognize. Then onto "Weasel and The White Boys Cool", marred by a sound problem with her guitar, which was later discovered to be her fault though she was giving her guitar-hand a hard time about it. Her band was impressive enough, but seemed divided between amusement and irritation at RLJ's condition. It must be hard to work for someone who's moods are erratic. At least half a dozen times I noticed Rick waving her hand at the drummer behind her to stop playing, when it was obvious he had come in at the point decided during rehersal. He seemed unsure how to handle her whimsical directions, leaving one feeling like they were attending a sound check. "Youngblood" was next, OK, but uninspired. "Last Chance Texaco" and "Stewart's Coat" went VERY well, then onto the piano set. She started with a sad little lullaby that was made up on the spot, and after rocking to and fro on her bench, complaining that being on the road was confusing because "One night you're at a bar, and the next, you're not...What's up with that?", she launched into decent versions of "Magazine", "Pirates" (a BIG surprise-she hardly ever does this one anymore), "Living It Up" and "Coolsville". I will say, she played piano beautifully. At one point, it seemed like she was starting to cry, and someone in the audience asked her if she was OK, to which there was no response. The crowd tried to be supportive, telling her that they loved her and how nice it was to see her etc. As was the case with the "Ghostyhead" show I saw, I witnessed people leaving early, unsure of what to make of their experience. This makes me sad. Up from the piano, the full band did "The Street Where You Live", "Firewalker" (unbelievably, the highlight of the set..), "Show Biz Kids", "Little Yellow Town" and "Satellites". During the musical jam segments, RLJ sat down in a chair at the front of the stage, lowering her head and closing her eyes as if it were way passed bedtime. She thanked the crowd for helping her to 'make a living doing this' and exited; an encore was out of the question. I'm not so much disappointed with the show as I am upset by the condition of one of my beloved performers. I recently received a recording of a show done in Oakland, CA. just this past September, so I knew it wasn't going to be a flawless performance, but this was a fair bit worse than what I had imagined. Thank God Joni's not a lush! I'll always love RLJ with all her hurts and faults, and I'll go see her again next time she comes to Boston, but I may have to say a few prayers for her in the interim. -Chris NP:"Flying Cowboys"-RLJ (from the unusually coherent "Naked Songs"). ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #642 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
