Yes, Bush "won": by a statistically insignificant margin of 537 out of 6 million, utilizing the votes that were counted, in the condition in which they were delivered, under the circumstances in which they were cast (e.g. West Palm Beach and those counties utilizing archaic voting machines), in the deplorable morass that the nation has come to recognize as Florida voting. That's the problem. After listening and reading account after account for four weeks, I personally believe that, if the vote of every voter who intended to vote for Gore and walked out of the voting booth firmly believing that he or she had done so had been actually counted as such, we'd be hearing news reports today of the cabinet plans of President-elect Gore. The problem is, not only can my assertion not be proven with any reliability to speak of, but counting many of these votes as they actually exist is problematic in the extreme. Even I, a staunch partisan, see the difficulties inherent in every single attempt to try determine what many of us see as the real result: multiple recounts involving handling and rehandling of cast ballots; attempting to divine voter intent weeks after the fact by holding dimpled chads up to the light; the Pandora's box of calling a new election in West Palm Beach in the highly unlikely event that any judge would ever order it, etc., etc., etc.. And so I fear that we are left with the very imperfect results of the 2000 election, such as it was. I believe, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision today and Judge Saul's decision on the and law *and facts* a short while ago, that a George W. Bush presidency is inevitable. And after a month and a spirited challenge from the Democrats, we should probably get on with letting it happen. But, like an athlete who won a coveted tournament under highly unusual or suspicious conditions, he will always have an asterisk by his name in my book. It therefore surprises me that in explaining why you voted for Bush and having a go at whoever it was that called Bush a 'fucking idiot', the far more serious abuses went unnoticed or uncommented on. To call someone a 'fucking idiot' in a moment of passion or childishness is a mere flash in the pan. to systemically show that you care nothing for others is whole other matter. " Me now: I also wonder why the Bush campaign didn't pursue recounts in areas in which Bush was predicted to win, or perhaps, in other areas that were especially close and which Bush lost. But the campaign chose not to. One could argue that it had no reason to do so, since in every tally of machine-counted votes, Bush has come out ahead. However, I think that when you're winning by a margin of as little as 200-and-some votes and at most, no more than 1000 over all but the first few days of the post-election period, you might wish to clarify the situation for yourself and your country, especially in the event that your opponent has made it quite clear that he has no immediate plans to roll over and play dead. Of course Gore chose to contest areas that were heavily Democratic. It wasn't up to the Gore campaign to do the Bush campaign's job for it: that would be a little like expecting a defense attorney to make the prosecutor's argument. With that said, however, the best thing would have been a total recount of the Florida votes, if any recounting at all were going to be done. But whatever some Bush supporters might think of the sincerity of the offer, that option was offered by the Gore campaign. . . and refused by Bush. It would be a first, but I don't see that it could never happen" Kakki, I'm not picking on you, and I also value your friendship! But I must respectfully disagree. There's something in that old axiom that "possession is 9/10 of the law": when someone's got something of value, and a status quo has been established, courts are often extremely reluctant to disrupt the equilibrium, or to take that "something" away. I realize it's a huge leap from the U.S. presidency to family law, but I can't help but think of the many situations involving adoption and other placement decisions for children in which an "OK" current placement is favored over another which might have been better in the long run had it only been implemented, because of the disruption and distress that a change would cause to the child. Of course, there are exceptions: witness the Baby Jessica and Baby Richard cases of some years back. But those cases were distressing precisely because so many people found them so deeply counter-intuitive. There, loving adoptive placements were ended in favor of return of the children in question to couples found to have greater legal claims, but no past relationships with the children, who were toddlers at the time of definitive court action. And public outcry was swift and loud. Here, I humbly submit that, in place of "best interest of the child," the applicable standard will be found, officially or not, to be "best interest of the country." And I find it hard to believe that a sitting president who has already established a "relationship" with the American people *as* their president and has acted as such will be unceremoniously ejected from the Oval Office, no matter how strong the legal claim of the opposition is ultimately found to be. If (note I say "if", I am just pitching a scenario for the sake of illustration) it were proved that G W Bush actively conspired to steal the election, that would not have happened while he was president and would not be an impeachable offense. Once the president is sworn in on January 20 at 12 noon, that is it for 4 years. I do think the election was clearly stolen. I am not sure if G W Bush had any role in it, but at least (some) Florida Republicans did. The investigations the next few years will be interesting. The payback for what was done to Clinton with investigations, and Gore with this election, will be hell. One of the most antiClinton Republicans, Bill McCullom, a member of the House Judiciary Committee and a manager of the House team in the Senate trial of Clinton, was defeated for election as Florida's senator. I can happen, but it strains the imagination that people voted for Bush and then turned around and voted Democratic for Senator given who the Republican candidate was. I never thought a stolen election like 1876 or 1888 could happen in our day. It appears to be happening. I am very sad, very stunned, very disappointed with the way this is going. However this ugly saga plays out, I am glad that I was on the side that said over and over, count all the votes and not on the side that said, stop the counting. I ma glad my candidate asked to meet with the other candidate; I think it says a lot that the other candidate refused. I never thought we'd ever see the day when the winner of the popular vote would not win the electoral vote. If Bush is sworn in, he will be the most minority of presidents that we have had since Benjamin Harrison and Rutherford Hayes, who are both remembered mainly for the corruption that surrounded their winning the election. Doesn't strain my imagination at all. People split tickets all the time. Your analysis works only if you sees a vote for Bush explicitly as a rejection of Clinton. I don't think most people saw their vote that way, and I certainly think it plausible that enough people saw their Bush votes as a rejection of *Gore* or, egads, an endorsement of Bush, to cover the extremely slim margin of victory. I still don't understand all the moral indignation over this. Should we endorse fraud or even irregularities? Of course not. But the one thing we *do* know is that no matter how you slice it there is NO "rightful" winner in this case who has the true authority of the people behind him. It was too damn close.
