Ahem. The control over releases of Beatle-music or film on CD, DVD, or any other future media, is a completely separate issue and entity from the ownership of songwriting copyrights and their ensuing royalty payments. Michael Jacksons famous role here was his purchase of the largest share of Northern Songs, the song-publishing company, which entitled him to receive a portion of the mechanical royalty payments from performances of those songs. Smaller shares have always been owned by John and Paul, an even smaller share by George, but the bulk of it was tied up by Dick James Publishing in 1963. At the time, John and Paul were rather young (22 and 21) and possessed remarkably little knowledge of the music business or publishing business, and Brian Epstein made a rather poor deal with Dick James concerning publishing, founding Northern Songs. In later years this owndership changed hands several times, and in fact I believe that Mr. J sold his controlling share to Sony a few years back. None of the above has anything at all to do with the decisions regarding new Beatle CDs, DVDs, films, etc. All of these decisions are made by Apple Corps, which is owned by Paul, George, Ringo and Yoko, who employ Neil Aspinall as CEO. All parties have to agree before new product is released, and there has been relatively little of that compared to other bands. With the exception of the original albums, released on CD in 1987, the only releases of new material in the last 15 years have been the 3 2-cd Anthology sets and the Live At The BBC. These 8 discs represent the only "previously unreleased" Beatle-music to appear since 1970. In additon, there have been the remixing of the songs on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, and now the remastering of the 27 #1 charting songs on "Beatles 1". These last two represent the only CD audio upgrade of any Beatles music since 1987. It really has been quite sparse compared to other bands, and the new Beatles 1 collection, featuring 27 songs sounding better than ever, is hopefully the equivalent of Joni's Hit's and Misses, with a fully remastered catalog coming in the next few years. We hope. Key in this arrangement is that EMI/Capitol have exclusive rights to release whatever Apple agrees to release, but they have no power to decide what gets released. I believe that in the 70s and early 80s they did, which is why there were various compilations on vinyl in those days, but they no longer do since a new contract between EMI and Apple in the late 80s. EMI surely would love to remaster everything and put out new discs such as the complete rooftop show, etc, but they cannot. It takes quite a bit for the four owners of Apple to agree on anything. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 10:00:08 EST From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: Boston-area Mini Jonifest!! I would recommend his songs and his philosophies to anyone on earth. If any of you haven't heard of him, check him out. He's a great writer and a very nice man -- he can inspire you with even the briefest of conversations. One of his songs, Beggars to God, has become my standard closing number and probably most frequent request -- the words of the chorus speak for themselves. Make love to each other, Be free with each other, Be prisoners of love until you lie in the sod. Be friends to each other, Forgive one another, See God in each other, be beggars to God. Regards, Harper Lou Oh, and thanks, Don Rowe, for giving us the final and definitive commandment on the playlist. You are phenomenal. You don't just speak for the world, I think you are the world. I am very very glad this is not the first PJ Harvey I've ever heard. Even with my "fan's" ears, this is rough going. The instruments are completely overwhelming her voice and it's beyond edgy into downright jagged sounding, although there are a few songs I like even through the harsh instrumentation (Rid of Me, Missed, and Dry). My very fine PJ advisor suggests getting the "demo" cd for the non-Albini production of some of these songs, so that's what I'll do. It is amazing how different the sound of this is from her other cds; similar types of songs, same voice, but completely different result. Listening to this hasn't diminished my fanhood (her other cds are great!!!), but don't think I'll be listening to this one very often. As far as the trade goes, though, I'm very happy to have this in my becoming-complete collection, so for that it's been a succcessful and truly enjoyable exchange. Thank you. NJC Sorry for posting another bit on the election, but in light of the mess in Florida, I just couldn't refrain from passing this one on. Penny Headline: Last-Minute Recount Confirms N.Mexico Win for Gore SANTA FE, N.M. (Reuters) - A last-minute recount in one New Mexico county has confirmed Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) as the winner of the U.S. presidential vote in the state, paving the way for his victory there to become official later on Thursday, election officials said. The late recount demanded by Republicans trimmed Gore's lead over Republican George W. Bush (news - web sites) by 115 votes to 368 out of nearly 600,000 cast in New Mexico, Roosevelt County Clerk Joyce Fraze said. With no more challenges to the state canvass pending, Gore's certified victory in New Mexico was due to take legal effect later on Thursday, state elections supervisor Denise Lamb said. ``The state canvassing board said the result will be official as of 5:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. EST),44 Lamb told Reuters. But candidates will have six business days from now to file for a statewide recount if they choose. New Mexico's five electoral votes will not decide the race for the White House, which hinges on Florida's 25 electoral votes. Those were certified for Bush, the Texas governor, last Sunday, but Gore is challenging the certification in court, saying not all of Florida's votes were counted. A New Mexico state judge in Roosevelt County, a rural county on the Texas border, was due to communicate the results of the late-night Wednesday recount to the secretary of state's office later on Thursday, court officials said. In a complicated end to a seesaw presidential race in New Mexico, the state canvassing board on Tuesday certified Gore the winner, but said the tally would only take effect on Thursday if the recount in Roosevelt County did not change the overall result. The unusual step of deferring certification came after the state Republican Party complained about ``undervoting,44 or ballots that showed no vote for a presidential candidate, in Roosevelt County. The canvassing board, comprising Republican Gov. Gary Johnson, Democratic Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron and Democratic state Supreme Court Chief Justice Pamela Minzner, asked a state district judge to supervise a recount and report back. Late on Wednesday, county officials manually tallied all 5,566 ballots and discovered that over 530 straight-party tickets were not counted by polling machines, the county clerk said. Adding those to the tally gave Bush 324 additional votes and Gore 209 for a net Bush gain of 115. The vice president's narrow victory followed several swings in the state total, from an election-night margin of over 10,000 votes for Gore to a razor-thin Bush lead of four votes statewide after a delayed count of special ballots in Albuquerque and surrounding Bernalillo County. And a chance to help out the Joni Mitchell Discussion List (JMDL) and Jonimitchell.com at the same time!! As most of you are already aware, the Joni Mitchell Discussion List (JMDL) and Jonimitchell.com are funded primarily by private means. In order to help defray some of these costs, a special fundraiser is being announced. Jack Merkel, a long time member of the JMDL (albeit mostly in lurk mode), has created some limited edition prints of a drawing he did of Joni Mitchell, and these prints are now being offered for sale to Joni fans through the JMDL and JoniMitchell.com. Jack has donated the art work, and aside from recouping the actual costs of printing the images, all proceeds will go directly to both the JMDL and Jonimitchell.com. The images are all 18" x 24", and they come in three different editions. All three editions were printed from an original mixed media drawing (pen and ink, and pencil). The image is basically a portrait of Joni, shown from the shoulders up. Through out the drawing are snippets of lyrics from Joni's songs. Two of the three editions are black and white, while the third edition is black on blue. The difference between the two black and white editions is mostly in the shading - the edition Jack has named Shadows, had more shading in it, while the edition named Light has very little shading. Each image is signed and numbered by Jack, and once the editions are sold out, no additional images will ever be printed. They are limited to these numbers: Shadows- 75 Blue- 25 Light- 90 While the images actually look fine just the way they are, Jack actually encourages people to have fun with them, and add their own artistic touches to them. For example, he kept a couple copies for himself, and has one tacked to an easle, with a box of colored pencils next to it. He then encourages friends to contribute to the drawing as they see fit. It's quite the conversation piece, and everyone seems to enjoy participating in the creative effort. Jack has also given copies to the children of one of his friends, and asked them to color them for him. When they are all done, he plans on displaying them Andy Warhol style. As a special treat, anyone who attended Ashara's JoniFest this past September, received an advanced copy of one of the prints. If you weren't lucky enough to attend, now is your chance to obtain one (or more!) of these images. So how much is all this going to cost? Only $20 for the first copy, and $15 for any additional copies ordered at the same time. There will also be a $5 shipping charge (slightly more if shipment is outside of the US). This $5 covers the cost of a shipping tube and the postage for up to 5 copies. So just think of it, for a mere $20 plus shipping, you help support jmdl.com and Jonimitchell.com, and you get an interesting portrait of Joni to hang on your wall. Why not buy several, and give them as gifts this Holiday season, or try having some fun with them like Jack recommends. My aim is to make this collection as easy as possible to get. With that in mind, there are several options: 1. Send me a blank CD. Now make sure that it is a MUSIC/AUDIO CD as opposed to a data CD. If it's not marked "Music" on the packaging, I won't be able to record on it. Also send me return postage so I can send the CD back to you. (That's the whole point, right? :~D) I can use whatever envelope or box you send them to me in to send them back to you. Hint: You save a little on postage if you send the CD ONLY without the jewel box(es). 2. If all that's just more hassle than you want to deal with, you can send me $5 which will cover the disc, the jewel box, the packaging & labeling, the padded mailer and postage back to you. If you want more than one, the cost drops to $3 per CD. This is because it costs less postage and packaging-wise to send multiple discs. And if you think I'm turning any profit, believe me, I ain't...not at $3 per. (Check or cash is OK) 3. OR, you can send me (2) blank CD's, I'll keep one to pay for packaging & mailing and send the other back to you full of Joni covers! 4. OR, if you have stuff to trade, I'm maybe up for that too! Any way you choose to go, PLEASE include a note reminding me what you want and your e-mail address in case I need to get in touch with you. GREAT HOLIDAY-GIVING OPPORTUNITY!!
