No one even asked the court to make this decision and intervene. the Court was clearly operating in a partisan way because of that. They have overruled the State legislature and all the proceedures that were "the will of the people". This is unprecedented and typical of the desperate nature of the Democrats to grab power. <<>> How can one say that the "only way they could go" was to overrule the perfectly legal decision of the Secretary of State whos primary job is to rule on such matters. Imagine if a Republican court simply jumped in there and took power away from Clinton. hes elected. So what. We are judges. Thomas jefferson is rolling over in his grave. <<:>> There was no conflict whatsoever except in the minds of Democrats because the second "may" clause referrs to Hurricanes (which is why that clause was passed through the legislature) preventing timely reporting of vote counts. It is on this absolutely bogus interpretation that the democrats have spun this misconception. <<>> If someone fails to follow the rules and effect their vote by proper proceedure and they somehow make a mistake and their vote card isnt punched it has always been "tough luck". There is in every single polling place and in the materials handed out a warning to the voters to check their card and be sure they have no hanging or "pregnant" chads. IOt is the obligation of eacvh voter to make sure he does this. These voters failed to do that. Now mind reading Democrat partisans are "interpreting" their "intent". What nonsense. How sad. << The deadline given will force Miami-Dade county to recount much faster than they planned.>>> Hail to the thieves. They can all show us how they hustle. <<>> Oh yeah. Right. We overrule the Secretary of states absolute clear ruling on law passed by the legislature and as old as the state itself, upheld by a Democrat Judge ,but those sacrosanct county officials (who just happen to speak at rallies and make statements like "Ill go to jail before I'll let Al Gore lose" must be given their powers by all means. Absolute dishonesty in action. <<< I am finding the question of military absentee ballots interesting.>>> Let me count the ways. But first consider that on the one hand the Democrats are saying that pregnant chads (read no hole in the card) signify "the will of the people" but because the post office in Yemen doesnt have a stamp or smears the ink we cant somehow determine the "intent" of a Bush voter. This is so tragic its criminal. But wait there's more. It turns out that the military was sent its absentee ballots 4th class and right along with all the rest of the junk mail like magazines and advertising which guaranteed that they wouldnt get their ballots until very close to the election, if at all. 3000 absentees still in their envelopes were discovered on three ships in the persian gulf only because a newspaper was informed by someone on one of those ships. The navy hearing this had the sacks opened and the ballots distributed to the men and women who then had to rush their ballots onto a special plane that barely got the ballots to the Election officials in time. So they didnt have a stamp. The reason why they were rejected all l over the state was because in every county the Demos sent trial lawyers to hector the county officials. A five page memo published on the internet reveals a conbcerted effort to fight like hell to contrest any and every one of ten reasons why a ballot could be tossed. lastly there is the latest revelation of last minute suprise troop maneuvers that took not only regular service people out of the state in the last week before the election but literally flew a unit to Bosnia. Hundeds of military personall were ordered out of the State. have you ever imagined anything so craven. This specific act on the part of this administration is beneath contempt and all due respect to Vinces position , he is dead wrong. This was planned and this is despicable. The sailors on the Cole (17 dead in the terrorist attack) were deprived of their votes. <<>> See above. <<> In one county 130 out of 132 ballots were contested and ultimately rejected. 2200 were accepted 1457 were rejected overall. It wasnt 4 or 5 per county. Gee I thought that the intent was the only thing that counted. Al Gore will be the most despised Commander in Chief in the history of our country if he is somehow able to steal the Presidency. If I was a democrat I would leave the party over this and this matter alone. Why do we even have elections. lets let the judges just pick our leaders. This is a sad day in our country. By the way I have all the documentation for all the things Ive said and much much more. I've already admitted to reading Sue Grafton's mystery novels. They're not great literature, but Grafton is a good descriptive writer and her private eye character, Kinsey Millhone, is a likable and open minded str8 woman with the occasional lapse in morals and judgment. Grafton's books are light, easy, and fast reading, good for those times when you want to sit down and devour a book in one or two nights. This cracked me up - what's the name of the book? I want to read it! I saw it on Saturday, with my son. I went in thinking it was going to be one of those overblown special-effects kind of movies and didn't think I'd enjoy it (but was hoping that there would be something to redeem it.) Ten minutes into the film and I'm enjoying it immensely, but still wondering when I'm going to be let down and boredom or too-much-of-a-good-thing syndrome will set in. It didn't happen. Let me tell you - I have never laughed so much, or so consistently, throughout a film in ages. I absolutely loved it and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Yes, there were a lot of special effects, and often movies that use these are all form and no substance, but it was so well-done, so true to the wacky spirit of Dr Seuss (but with a message!) And I wasn't sure about Jim Carey in the title role, but he was just perfect. Despite all the makeup and hair all over him, every facial expression was captured. You forgot it was Carey - he really becomes the Grinch. Go see this film - take your kids, take your parents, take your grouchy friends! It's delightful. If you don't like it... you're a mean one! Lori mentioned Lawrence Sandler: I usually find myself re-reading "The Confession, (or is it Passion?) of Molly T." Kinda interesting in a faux feminist thriller way. Another long time favorite is Jackie Sussan and her books, especially "Valley of the Dolls." Can't live without it. The Kellerman's, (Jonathan and Faye), are favorite quick reads as well although their output is getting to be redundant as Milos continues to be surly and Faye's characters juggle the same balance between the secular world and orthodox Judaism while solving crimes. Lastly, although this is hardly "trash," two more favorite authors are Chiam Potok and Herman Wouk. I love "My Name is Asher Lev" and his other two: "The Chosen" and "The Promise." And Wouk's WWII books are good and thoughtful reads. Later, I became a redhead. >But > that's because I get sick of the boring mousy-brown, > not the white - I did > the full peroxide a couple of years ago, so I know > what I've got in store! > As far as I recall, my real colour is along the mousey lines as well - more like the mice you see down in the subway at night, browny but covered with soot or something - the poor things have probably never seen daylight. I know I've got a lot of grey, but I never let it go far enough to be really sure how much and I'm skeeered! I do know the stuff on the sides is actually white right now and if the rest of my head could be that colour, I wouldn't bother with the dye. But I keep thinking of the little mousies in the subway. There's the highlights thing but I've had that done once or twice and I just can't sit still long enough at the hairdresser's to tolerate it and am too afeared to try it on my own at home. I've seen other people's results of the home job - it's OK if you're just colouring, but you have to be pretty good to handle highlighting/streaks. I did cut my own hair once because I was just fed up with it and I did an OK job, but I wouldn't try it again - the fact it turned out OK that time was sheer luck combined with the fact that I was really focussed on the deed at hand and I would call that probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are plenty of people out there who are good with a pair of scissors and, if it doesn't work out, I can always blame them! Someone may already have mentioned these but, here goes anyway: Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant) Purple Avenue (by Tom Waitts, but the version I know is by Holly Cole) Get your free @yahoo.ca address at http://mail.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 12:28:00 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: grey hair - --- Anne Sandstrom wrote: > I can commiserate with all the males on the list > fretting over grey > hair/losing hair. Strangely enough, when it DID start growing back, some of it came in red (which was her original and natural colour, but she had gone totally grey years before.) But since there have been so many, I thought people might be interested in these lines from a new song, "'Til You Can't Tuck It In " by my current fave band The Beautiful South. It's on their latest album, "Painting It Red": Your second grey hair came a month After the first It didn't make you feel any better But it didn't make you feel any worse Your third grey hair appeared With the fourth on your beard Your fifth, sixth, seventh sprouted out From your nose and your ears And I'll love you my partner 'Til you can't hide the grey anymore Your distinguished good looks Are the ones young girls cannot ignore And I've love you my partner 'Til the gray hits the hairdresser's floor.... I don't really gravitate towards the existentialists like I used to, but I find I can keep going back to Camus, in particular, and be very rewarded. The passage quoted below is from Camus *Notebooks , 1935-1942* pp. 13-14 (Knopf, 1963). I actually didn't find it there, but rather quoted in Eric J. Leed's *The Mind of the Traveler: From Gilgamesh to Global Tourism* (Basic Books, 1991, for those of you interested in the bibliographic). The full passage, as quoted by Leed in the opening epigraph of his book, is: "What gives value to travel is fear. It is the fact that, at a certain moment,, when we are so far from our own country . . . we are seized by a vague fear, and the instinctive desire to go back to the protection of old habits. This is the most obvious benefit of travel. At that moment, we are feverish but also porous, so that the slightest touch makes us quiver to the depths of our being . . . This is why we should not say that we travel for pleasure. There is no pleasure in traveling, and I look upon it as an occasion for spiritual testing. . . . Pleasure takes us away from ourselves in the same way that distraction, as in Pascal's use of the word, takes us away from God. Travel, which is like a greater and graver science, brings us back to ourselves." I was a little shocked on first reading it, because the "porous with travel fever/ trembling in my bones" lines are so identified with Joni for me, but on a second look, I have to admire how she has made more personal and poetic the things she "borrowed." Knowing this also gives me even greater respect for her creative process--we all know she made the cross country car trip and that is the ultimate source of the album's concept, yet she borrows the title from Mohammed's experience, takes some imagery from Camus, melds it with her own experiences and poetics and sensibility and makes it something indelibly her own. I love that she had that car trip experience, then related it to Camus (or vise versa). It occurs to me that one of the things I love most about Hejira is that it is personal and heartfelt, but cerebral at the same time. That balance of heart and mind, for me, at least, is certainly one key to Joni's genius. Well, I'm over the river and through the woods -- Happy Thanksgiving to you all (even if your country isn't currently celebrating it :-) Catherine T., newly in Seattle Wally Kairuz wrote: > who else out there is a camus fan? i am one! my favorite quotation is a > camus line: > ''happiness, too, is inevitable''. > i was raised on camus, sartre and beauvoire. > another one of my favorites, this time by sartre to beauvoire just before he > died: [roughly translated] > ''my death will not separate us nor will yours unite us.'' > wallyK > > Wow! In 1620, would have been King James I of England (also known as James VI of Scotland), son of Mary, Queen of Scots. This is the same James as in King James Bible. Also the same King James who was gay, or at least a homosexual, not sure how happy he was. He married Anne the daughter of the Danish king, who threatened to wage war against England since James wouldn't sleep with Anne (the national insult to Denmark and all that) so James did sleep with his wife and thus, King Charles I. James did sleep with George Villiers, who was thus made Duke of Buckingham. So actually "Fuck you King James" would have had an intersting meaning in 1620 but I avoid saying that in any Baptist Church that uses the King James Bible. I always find it amusing that their beloved King James was a gay guy.
