NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE To the citizens of the United States of America, In the light of your failure to elect a President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your Independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchial duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime minister (The rt. hon. Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following Rules are introduced with immediate effect: 1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed". 2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. 3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. 4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. 5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through. 6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005. 7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 98.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "sh*t". 8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 8th will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called "Indecisive Day". 9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. 10. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy. - -- bw colin colin@tantra.fsbusiness.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/tantra_apso/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 16:39:49 -0500 From: "Mike Hicks" Subject: Re: Going For The One > From: "c Karma" > To: jlamadoo@home.com, m_hicks@aiken.k12.sc.us > Subject: Going For The One > Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 18:32:03 GMT > MUST have an "And You And I" fix. PJ is fantastic. i've been listening to Portishead a lot lately, a band i couldn't stand for the longest time....all those hours i missed!!!!!! i've also been know to try and sell Joan Osbourne from time to time. her latest one (about time Joan) is stronger than teh reveiws would have you believe. and one more thing- it is great to meet another Hole fan on the list! Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 19:29:42 -0500 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Seminole County NJC On NBC News, they just reported that in Seminole County, Florida, the Republican party mailed out absentee ballots already filled out (already voted) except for a signature and social security numbers and when they came back, if all that information was not supplied by the voter, the county party completed the ballot and then it was cast. The Republican elections official defended the practice as being "helpful." What is "helpful" in one county would be called the most appalling type of vote fraud that I have ever heard of, as a native of Cook County, Illinois where I thought I had heard of everything! If the Communist Party had ever spoken with the Seminole County Republicans, they would have learned something about how to fix an election! This is the most corrupt vote fraud activity that I have ever heard of. But what does it really mean? Both major parties and the minor parties as well have corrupt people in them who have done corrupt things. There is no sinless party in the US (or anywhere), nor is there an evil party. The blanket condemnations of "Dems" and the Democrats by some is just plain wrong, as are the blanket condemnations of Republicans. As partisan a Democrat as I am, I have seen sickening corruption and bad acts by both parties as well as good and decent and courageous acts. I was conceived by Republicans, born of Republicans during the 1952 Republican National Convention (where you may recall the Eisenhower forces used shall we say questionable means to oust Taft delegates; my mother said she went into labor listening to the convention and all the hospital staff were more concerned with her convention reports than her labor and my birth). I was raised by Republicans. Most of my family is Republican. To say that Democrats are more compassionate than Republicans is not fair nor right. They may define "compassion" differently in political terms but my Republican mother was as compassionate as person as I ever knew; she voted wrong (ha ha!) but she taught me to vote, worked as an elections judge, and was a compassionate and generous person. On the other hand I wouldn't be hungry in a roomful of my Republican relatives but that may have more to do with their appetites than compassion issues! (We also are Italian, Polish, German, and Bohemian and lived in Chicago so we ate every type of ethnic food and I enjoyed those food discussions.) So I am glad that the blanket condemnations of the "other" political party of late last week have ceased. Cars are a better issue. (1986 Nissan 300ZX and 1985 Subaru; one is my glistening sports car and one is my $600 winter beater with 4-wheel drive and I defy anyone to have guessed that I own either type of car). And: stick shifts are better. The last car I had (83 Nissan 280ZX) that was an automatic, I traded away. As a Chicagoan, I will close with the comment that the Seminole County, Florida Republican vote fraud scheme which they call helpful is insidiously corrupt and I am amazed that no Chicago Democrat ever thought of that! We only cast ballots for dead people; we insisted the live ones do it for themselves! Please forgive me if you get this twice.) Hi everyone, Just wanted to let any of you JUDY COLLINS fans on the list the she will be doing some FREE CONCERTS at several BORDER'S BOOKS stores around the country to promote her two new CD's. She'll be here in Ft. Lauderdale at the Sunrise Blvd Border's, where about 3 years ago I managed to get a huge mounted poster of the cover of Joni's Complete Poems and Lyrics book. (A photo of me standing next to it used to be at JMDL.com. It still might be.) There was a contest for people to sing Joni songs but there were sadly only 4 contestants. (We JMDLER's would have really wowed them. At the time I hadn't played my guitar in about 20 years, so I really wasn't prepared and was just too nervous to perform.) All four got a prize (book or CD's) and that poster was the last one chosen. My husband and I approached the guy who got it and asked if he really wanted it. He said he would have preferred to get the book. So right then and there we bought him the book and traded for the poster. I shared my excitement in a long post about the evening, at the time. Anyway, back to Judy....she puts on a really nice show. I actually saw her for free on another occasion. Some years back when she wrote her first autobiography she was at the Miami Book Fair. She performed several songs and answered questions. She sang "Since You Asked" and "My Father" . Both are songs that definitely bring a tear to my eye, and they are songs that she wrote. I also waited on line to have her sign my book and take a photo with her. She was very gracious to everyone and her eyes are indeed, truly incredible. I know there will be crowds for Judy's Sunday performance at Borders. Some months back they had MELANIE and her family performing. It was mobbed. I had to share a chair to stand on. She was absolutely incredible. I wasn't that into her music much when she was popular, but she can still sing, writes some great songs and plays fantastic guitar. She's also quite a story teller. She had some new CD's released at the time as well as a greatest hits CD. She has surprisingly, probably doubled in size. She's definitely someone to rediscover. Back to Judy again. Below is a list of the free concerts at Borders. I got them from the JudyCollins.com website. (If you're interested they also list her upcoming regular concerts. OK, so all these reasons don't add up -- just thought i'd toss them out there. they seem silly after i look at them! so, i should go get the "chuck e." record, or POP POP which the press was raving about. thanks for pushing me to think further! (and thanks to everyone who posted suggestions to me today -- much, much appreciated. phew--this is the most i've JMDL'ed in a while!) - --emily ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 20:42:10 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: A Case of You - new cover << A few days ago I was pleased to get a copy of the self -produced CD "Introducing Joe Slomp". >> Man, Francesco, you stole my thunder! Joe Slomp, an Italian JMDL'er, sent me a copy of this wonderful CD as well, and I've been enjoying it over the past couple of days and was preparing my review... Anyway, this is a super collection of songs. It's almost like Joe read my mind and did all my favorite artists! Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Joni, Bruce Springsteen....what- no XTC or Tom Waits? :~) Joe's an extremely talented vocalist. The songs he picks are not easy songs. He's a blue-eyed soul singer, his voice is very chameleonic, he can belt out a punchy soul shout or coo a soft whisper, and the musicians on this disc are astounding! I don't know them, but I'll bet they're among the best studio musicians available in that part of the globe. Here's a rundown of the tracks: 1. A Case of You - This will appear on Volume 12. Thanks Joe for granting me inclusion, this will be a good way to get you heard across the country, the world for that matter. And he had some neat comments about Joni, he can tell you what he said... 2. Guinnevere - This one's the standout! Imagine Steely Dan running this song through a "Home At Last" treatment and maybe you can begin to grasp the feel this one has. Has to be heard to be believed. Kakki, obviously I thought of you as soon as I heard this chestnut! It's an OHMYGAWD jawdropper! 3. So In Love - This is a Curtis Mayfield song, done in a very Stax/Volt way, tremendous horn section and that soulful Booker T organ sound. Very nice. 4. Woman's Gotta Have It - This Bobby Womack tune is probably familiar to most of it via James Taylor's cover. This is similar in arrangement, but much funkier and jazzier, and Andrea Cecchini's bass is featured and provides a steady foundation along with solid drums by Marcello Surace. Think of Hall & Oates and those white-boy soul harmonies they were famous for, and you're pretty close. 5. This Time It's Real - This one would be a HUGE hit in SC, where they eat up "beach music" tunes like this! This one would fill up the dance floor in a hurry. It's Joe's salute to Tower of Power, and it's powerful good! 6. All The Way Home - The first of two Springsteen songs Joe does, this one is a little obscure because it was a tune Bruce wrote for Southside Johnny. And the arrangement is much more stripped down, just the vocal, an acoustic, and a soft organ. Very tasty, thanks for bringing this one out, Joe! 7. She Makes My Day - A Robert Palmer song, this one is my least favorite on the disc. Maybe because I miss all those babes that Palmer used to put in his videos! :~) That said, it's still a pretty song, it just doesn't hold up to the rest of the gems here... 8. Smile, Please - Another HUGE winner! Never heard anyone else do this song, it's of course Stevie Wonder's tune from "Fulfillingness". Joe brings the tempo down a bit and makes it a slow burnin' funky thang! Joe brings out the joy in the song, that's for sure. Not too many singers would brave the range of notes and scatting you've gotta do to pull it off! 9. Takin' It To The Streets - Are you kidding me? How cool is this? Joe and company take this Doobies tune and give it a slick jazz treatment. Joe sorta sounds like Michael McDonald anyway (when he wants to, I told you he's like a chameleon!) , and this one is also noteworthy for the great piano work by Pier Paolo Principato. It definitely puts a new spin on it! 10. Living Proof - The other Springsteen song on the record, this is a beautiful song about the joys of having children. Joe's got two, Alice & Martha, and I think both of their middle names are "Joni". Anyway, this is a unique arrangement as well, some great guitar work by Stefano Micarelli and propulsive choo-choo drumming as well. I've always loved this song, Joe, so I appreciate you adding it here. 11. Some Other Time - A Leonard Bernstein song, from 1944, this one is a gorgeous closer as it's just Joe and Andrea Eventano on piano. A pretty song I'm not familiar with..."just when the fun is starting, comes the time for parting"...man, is it done already? This is truly a very cool record. Well done Joe, and give a "grazi" to those musicians - they are WONDERFUL! All that's left is to tell us how those that want it can pick up a copy! And I'd love to hear more about the songs, why you picked the ones you did, anything else you'd care to share... And you can do the XTC and Tom Waits on your next record, Joe, and I've already got the title for you: "Sophomore Slomp"! :~) Bob NP: Joe Slomp, "Some Other Time" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 20:43:47 EST From: "Diane Evans" Subject: Re: Slavic foods(njc) Ranger Rick, You got me! I ran down to my recipe box and found, much to my chagrin, that it was me who mixed them up. Can't believe I did that! I do remember my other [phoenetic] spelling of the dumplings being the word most used, but seem to recall my grandparents using pyrohy. Will Janet do a video for MTV? I think she will sound great on Beat of Black Wings and can't wait to hear her take." We're not getting a Christmas CD this year, Sue. I'm fairly certain that was to be the 3rd part of the orchestral trio of Joni projects, the second being the one of her compositions exclusively, probably including versions of "Hejira", "JOTMAS". "FTR" and "Be Cool" like we heard on tour last spring. I wonder myself if THAT stuff is in the can yet....Joni tends to be a little slow getting things out. ;~) As far as the tribute CD is concerned, I'll be very suprised if it's out before the end of the year. Most big New Releases have to be out by the Tuesday B4 Thanksgiving to be ready for the shopping rush. Usually, things are at a standstill from then until the second week of January. I haven't seen mention of it on the Reprise site, nor on Jim's page, and I emailed Reprise 2 weeks ago and they didn't get back to me. Neither my local Tower nor HMV or Border's have ordered it yet, AND I saw a new Janet Jackson video today on VH1 for another single altogether. I'm not trying to be a bummer, but more express frustsation - where the hell is this record???? Most of the tracks for this disc were finished EONS ago (this project started not too long after the release of 'TI' - no joke!) and I'm forever annoyed by the release process by which finished quality recordings get shelved in order to focus on big sellers. The gently amusing thing about this is that the whole shebang is owned by your very own General Motors Corporation. We get the odd few GM models sold through the Vauxhall/Opel dealers over here (Seville, Camaro, but no damn TransAm :( To own up to my own environmental damage: BMW 730i - sensible car for pounding up and down the motorway to client sites. Clients all over the country, and public transport is a joke to get to a client site and back in one day. I wouldn't choose anything else for this sort of motoring: for selfish reasons down to peace and quiet, comfort and emerging the other end with my sanity intact. But: 100 dollars to brim the tank. Silly car: TVR Chimaera 500. It's a drop top summer sports car thing. Love it to bits, even if the dealer is currently *taking* it to bits. (Like for the last *five* weeks.) About 60 dollars to brim the tank. Do I want to use public transport over here? Yeah. Shame it sucks. Like, to even get on a train, I have to drive for between 20-40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. When I manage to get on it, it'll be overcrowded, hot in summer, even hotter in winter (yes, really). I won't get a seat if I'm going to London, because all the seats are full before the train gets to my station. And if I'm not going to London, I'll probably have to go *via* it anyway, change trains, probably change *stations*, etc. Oh yeah. I'm 6'4" tall. Buses don't have enough legroom. Trains don't have enough leg or elbow room, and don't even think about that fantasy about getting the laptop out and working. Because your briefcase ends up trapped somewhere inconvenient and your knees end up interleaved with those of the person sitting opposite. The New Jersey transit is pure heaven by comparison. And the kicker. A return ticket from Cambridge to London (a journey of maybe 60 or so miles). About 55 bucks to you sir. This is because the train prices *double* at peak morning periods. Presumably to discourage people from using the trains and over stressing the capacity of the network. The government currently seems to be stressing the fact that public transport is the way to go, and backing this up by pricing us out of our cars. However, the public transport system is not being improved in line with this, not in terms of capacity, reliability, flexibility, safety or availability. Oh yeah. My village is 10 miles from Cambridge, and is prime commuter belt for Cambridge itself, which has an IT industry that's growing like wildfire. There's a trainline running into Cambridge. It's disused, naturally. OFFS. I'll calm down now, and go get a drink. - --Chris ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #605 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
