Sometimes they want to punish someone that they love. Unfortunately suicide is final. Those who are seriously ill with depression are at high risk for suicide. Hospitalization alone does not prevent that possibility. It takes time for medication/treatment to take effect. The involvement of family and friends is an important part of the treatment. From what your telling me, that hadn't even begun. This persons family should have voiced their concerns about the discharge. It seems to me this person should not have been left alone. It's unfortunate that this hospital did not do a better job of intervention, diagnosis and treatment for your friend. There has to be a support system in place before a patient is released from the hospital. A few days ago I was pleased to get a copy of the self -produced CD "Introducing Joe Slomp". First there's a f*@#ing great jazzy NYC-night version of "Guinnevere" (imagine CPR and a trumpet revisiting it the way they did with "Triad" - Croz: I'm sure you'll like this version), then Joni's "A Case of You", then a beautiful rendition of "All the Way Home", a song Springsteen wrote for Southside Johnny, then the Doobies' "Takin´ It To The Streets" and other beautiful gems. Well-balanced between his roots (the singer-songwriters of the West Coast) and his natural jazz inclination, this is a collection of some of the songs Joe has been singing through the years presented here in elegant dresses. As Joe wrote on the booklet: "Some might feel disoriented by the different styles in this selection of songs, but my feeling is that when the music is good, there is no sense in putting boundaries to it." Visit his site, listen to clips of each song and enjoy the album! http://www.jslomp.it/ijs/ Francesco PS - Soon there will be also some excellent outtakes to download, so bookmark his website and remember to visit it in the very next future. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:48:27 GMT From: "Wayne A. Willbur" Subject: OK, I GIVE! NEXT TIME I VOTE DEMOCRAT! Dear Chairman of the DNC: Democrats have made me a convert after I’ve voted Republican in the past 4 elections! Why? 1. Democrats are better at the art of political war! Democrats treat politics like war; Republicans treat it like a high-school debate. Who will consistently win? Democrats! Let’s just hope that should the US have to go to war (heaven forbid), that the Democrats are as ruthless toward the enemy as they have been against their Republican fellow countrymen. Furthermore, their PR and Spin Meisters are superior to their Republican counterparts; I’ve been amazed at the Democratic Spin Meisters who make white look like black and black look like white, according to the direction of the prevailing wind. 2. Democrats are more loyal to their own than Republicans. I remember when Ronald Reagan was termed the “Teflon President.” Bill Clinton perfected the art. He was caught perjurying himself and still survived impeachment with Democrats not only protecting him but also actually making up the excuses for him. If he had been Republican, he would have been gone years ago! 3. Democrats are more glamorous than Republicans. More Hollywood entertainers vote more consistently Democratic than Republican, and let’s face it: Arnold Schwartznegger is no Alex Baldwin, Belinda Carlyle is no Barbara Streisand, and, of course, there’s only one Rosie O’Donnell. I was dumbfounded to learn that some of our country’s entertainment royalty threatened to move, yes, actually move from the US if Bush became president. That would truly be a national loss; the thought of Barbara Streisand moving from her seaside mansion in Malibu to a seaside mansion in the South of France, preventing me from spending a few hundred dollars on a future concert to hear her croon “People Need People” was too much to consider. 4. Finally, I’m tired – flat out tired. It takes too much time to consider, ponder and weigh things like issues, character and integrity. I just want the simplicity of knowing that I can vote for the party that promises to make me feel better, more comfortable, and more fulfilled, and if we stop to truly admit it, we can always feel just a little bit better about ourselves. It’s just too much to expect us to continuously take responsibility for ourselves; that’s a job better left to our elected officials, our government. I now realized that Republicans have tricked us into thinking that this is our obligation. What a fool I’ve been! I’ve gone through years of soul-searching with the burden of this responsibility and for what? Now, I know, since I’ve done more research, that Democrats have been there all along with that wonderful net of safety to catch us all when we fall. In closing, thank you with much gratitude. I look forward to working on the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign 2004! Genrally speaking, people usually commit, or attempt , suicide because they want the pain to stop and can't see another way. It has always baffled me why many an unsuccessful attempt is sneeringly categorised as 'attention seeking'. If someone is willing to harm themesleves to get attetion they NEED attention! Thinking that a successful(or even attempted) suicide was just a way of 'getting back' is much easier than to face the fact that the person just couldn't stand the pain anymore. It absolves everyone else of any responsibility. Not for the suicide but for the lack of attention prior. A young man we knew(not well) committed suicide at age 18 by throwing himself from the 14th floor. This young lad had been abused. He had cried for help. He was turned away. He was balmed to clear other's consciences. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 11:40:24 +0000 From: catman Subject: sexist jokeNJC On a Trans-Atlantic flight, a plane passes through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning. One woman in particular loses it. Screaming, she stands up in the front of the plane. "I'm too young to die!" she wails. Then she yells, "Well, if I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on Earth to be memorable! I've had plenty of love in my life, but no one has ever made me really feel like a woman! Well, I've had it! Is there ANYONE on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN??" For a moment there is silence. Everyone has forgotten their own peril, and they all stare, riveted, at the desperate woman in the front of the plane. Then, a man stands up in the rear of the plane. "I can make you feel like a woman," he says. He's gorgeous. Tall, well built, with flowing black hair and ocean blue eyes. He starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt one button at a time. No one moves. The woman is breathing heavily in anticipation as the handsome man approaches. He removes his shirt. NJC hi everyone. i feel lost amid all the hand-count talk. i voted, i'm passionate about the outcome, but i can't even begin to follow the arcane and multiple roads this election is wandering down. at least it may blow apart some of the easy rhetoric about what "the american people" want -- it drives me up the wall to hear various politicians tossing off this phrase, and then of course never adhering to what THIS particular american person "wants." so, on the off chance that anyone feels like helping me out...i need some new music. (this is the place i go to learn ALL about music, from every sonic quarter. yet i have the audacity to ask for a specialized suggestion?!) i've been listening to aimee mann (all three records) nonstop, loving it. fiona gets a lot of play time, as does the new madonna (killer "don't tell me" beginning), and any hole CD. i'm looking for something to add in here... a female (?) singer/songwriter, someone with harmony and melody and edge and breathtaking lyrics. i've never heard rickie lee jones -- i think i'm afraid of coming too close to joni. same with "older" women singer/songwriters, although i do love some joan baez ("diamonds and rust" particularly). i'm in the mood for modern, but i'll go "back" if need be. this aimee mann "bachelor #2" is phenomenal, really over-the-top perfect pop. her disappointed, ironic vocals get me every time. and there is melody to swoon to here -- just listen to "red vines" or "the world's own optimist" or "susan" -- WOW. i don't mean to say i'm not listening to MEN, just that i'm loving the aimee mann vibe so much that i want more... i'm listening a lot to yo la tengo right now (because i'm seeing them on friday 11/24 as a birthday present!) OK, i'm realizing that this is an impossible and mildly ridiculous request -- since you all don't really know what i have in my CD collection, how can you give me a suggestion? still, in the spirit of music-related NJC posts, i thought i'd toss this out there. any and all responses appreciated! Here's the Joni content from the article: But Broadway cheer is quickly left behind for darker and more exotic pastures as LuPone delves into contemporary material: Brian Wilson (``God Only Knows'') and Joni Mitchell (``The Last Time I Saw Richard''), alongside Randy Newman, Judy Collins and even -- holy Toledo! -- Cyndi Lauper, in a quietly rending version of the pop hit ``Time After Time.'' LuPone's voice is a flexible instrument, moving from a caressing croon to a powerhouse belt, and she employs all its varied colors in this repertoire. To the Mitchell song, a biography of a disillusioned romantic, she brings just a tinge of dramatic expression and a dry touch. Although its music is distinctively Mitchell's, hearing LuPone's interpretation makes you see the connections between the bruised wisdom of Mitchell's storytelling and the similarly dry-eyed emotional textures of Stephen Sondheim. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:13:16 -0800 From: Steve Dulson Subject: liver in a blender (NJC) There is a band out of Austin called The Bad Livers, which I think is a darned good name. :) - -- ######################################################### Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA steve@psitech.com "The Tinker's Own" http://www.tinkersown.com "Southern California Dulcimer Heritage" http://members.aol.com/scdulcimer/ "The Living Tradition Concert Series" http://www.thelivingtradition.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:14:50 -0800 From: Steve Dulson Subject: jmdler cars NJC 1998 Honda Civic 1994 Mazda MPV 1960 Austin-Healey Sprite ("Angus") 1959 Austin-Healey Sprite ("Fiona") - -- ######################################################### Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA steve@psitech.com "The Tinker's Own" http://www.tinkersown.com "Southern California Dulcimer Heritage" http://members.aol.com/scdulcimer/ "The Living Tradition Concert Series" http://www.thelivingtradition.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:18:21 -0800 From: Steve Dulson Subject: Orange County (NJC) Kakki wrote: >Geez, Clark, your characterization of the "prototypical Republican" this >sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood script or story treatment. >Although I'll admit I have seen this prototype wandering around Orange >County, CA in the past. The presentation was held at the Willows Golf Resort in Saskatoon and attended by her parents and former teachers. Joni said "Awards don't mean that much to me. That people like the music is the best award." After the presentation Joni gave an hour long interview and performed a new song called 'The Magdalene Laundries" that she said she planned to record with Sinead O'Connor on background vocals. 1994: Today, Joni was in London, England for a solo showcase for the media at a townhouse off Gloucester Road in South Kensington. Before the event, Joni was interviewed and performed "Sunny Sunday" and "Sex Kills" on the BBC series "The Late Show." At around a quarter to 7 in the evening Joni went on stage and performed for more than an hour in front of 200 media and record company people from all over Europe. She said to the audience "I don't know how to address you; you're not all Brits..Spain? Italy? France? Do we have France? And I hear there's someone here from Greece." She referred to Crosby before she sang "Yvette" and the fact that he was in a California hospital waiting for a liver transplant. It begins with a brief acknowledgment of the sunnier side of love: the rollicking duo of ``Love Makes the World Go Round,´´ from ``Carnival,´´ and ``A Wonderful Guy,´´ from ``South Pacific.´´ But Broadway cheer is quickly left behind for darker and more exotic pastures as LuPone delves into contemporary material: Brian Wilson (``God Only Knows´´) and Joni Mitchell (``The Last Time I Saw Richard´´), alongside Randy Newman, Judy Collins and even -- holy Toledo! -- Cyndi Lauper, in a quietly rending version of the pop hit ``Time After Time.´´ LuPone's voice is a flexible instrument, moving from a caressing croon to a powerhouse belt, and she employs all its varied colors in this repertoire. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? She'll be here in Ft. Lauderdale at the Sunrise Blvd Border's, where about 3 years ago I managed to get a huge mounted poster of the cover of Joni's Complete Poems and Lyrics book. (A photo of me standing next to it used to be at JMDL.com. It still might be.) There was a contest for people to sing Joni songs but there were sadly only 4 contestants. (We JMDLER's would have really wowed them. At the time I hadn't played my guitar in about 20 years, so I really wasn't prepared and was just too nervous to perform.) All four got a prize (book or CD's) and that poster was the last one chosen. My husband and I approached the guy who got it and asked if he really wanted it. He said he would have preferred to get the book. So right then and there we bought him the book and traded for the poster. I shared my excitement in a long post about the evening, at the time. Anyway, back to Judy....she puts on a really nice show. I actually saw her for free on another occasion. Some years back when she wrote her first autobiography she was at the Miami Book Fair. She performed several songs and answered questions. She sang "Since You Asked" and "My Father" . Both are songs that definitely bring a tear to my eye, and they are songs that she wrote. I also waited on line to have her sign my book and take a photo with her. She was very gracious to everyone and her eyes are indeed, truly incredible. I know there will be crowds for Judy's Sunday performance at Borders. Some months back they had MELANIE and her family performing. It was mobbed. I had to share a chair to stand on. She was absolutely incredible. I wasn't that into her music much when she was popular, but she can still sing, writes some great songs and plays fantastic guitar. She's also quite a story teller. She had some new CD's released at the time as well as a greatest hits CD. She has surprisingly, probably doubled in size. She's definitely someone to rediscover. Back to Judy again. Below is a list of the free concerts at Borders. I got them from the JudyCollins.com website. (If you're interested they also list her upcoming regular concerts.
