My father suffered from depression most of his life - he had extensive shock therapy when I was about five, which my mother says completely altered his personality. She often says she wished I'd known him before the treatments. His depression also contributed to the mis-diagnosis of the bacterial infection that killed him - the doctors thought his irrational behaviour was due to his mental condition, not the infection racing around his brain and body. Depression is certainly a real disease, and needs to be recognised as such. My deepest sympathies to you, and your family.
