(what a cynical position to take!!) just for a bit of perspective, our ex-presidents, ex-wife, continues in politics, after receiving a R 15,000 (about US$ 2,500) fine for kidnapping & murder, our current president is an alcoholic who is permanently drunk, i personally know someone whose ex boyfriend (and father of her child) was mysteriously murdered after threatening to blow the whistle on corruption involving a poltician......... politics suck. ********************** much more cheerful subject: songs that move me to emotion: mary chapin carpenter - "my pirate days" & also "john doe no. 40 something" michelle shocked/joan baez - "if not now, then when" - live recording of a duet sung in italy, the refrain is "a burden shared, is only half a trouble. joy thats shared, is joy made double" joni mitchell - "circle game" the opening line "yesterday, a child came out to wonder" must be one of the most beautiful opening lines written & "this flight tonight" i went on a short trip to london recently, met a most amazing woman, then had to leave her to come back home. i picked up a copy of "blue" at the airport duty free,,,, talk about your timing. - now "this flight tonight" just cracks me up whenever i hear it ron ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 16:13:08 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: Oh So Sad Songs Not that these all evoke tears every time but...... One Hand, One Heart (from the CAST recording of West Side Story, not the movie) Hey Jude: as sung live by Sir Paul McCartney Eleanor Rigby: as sung live by Sir Paul McCartney (yah it was a long evening.) Overture / Cotton Avenue: as performed by Marian at JoniFest 1989 in Ashara's living room when no one was around. (Thank you Marian. Thank you Ashara.) I didn't get weepy but the little hairs on the back of my neck told me that she was channeling in a profound way. Beyond words. Both Sides Now, A Case Of You, and Judgement of the Moon And Stars (Ludwig's Tune) as sung live by some Canadian folk icon with an orchestra on the BSN tour. Not Judy Collins- the OTHER one. Bullet the Blue Sky by U2. I set this on infinite repeat during the longest afternoon of my life. "Red Rain" & "In Your Eyes" from 'So' by Peter Gabriel the refrain of The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of: Carly's song Field Of Gold by Sting for the last verse about looking back.... and "Wango Tango" by Ted Nugent. That's how I feel about Shenandoah - since my mother's roots were there and it makes me think of her. Also, O Holy Night was her favorite Christmas song - I can't sing or hear that one without bursting into tears. But not all of the songs that make me cry have personal associations - for example, Mary Chapin Carpenter's 10,000 Miles or Somewhere Over The Rainbow have no associations. I never tried to learn Little Green. It always seemed too personal to Joni, that I never felt I could sing it with enough true feeling. Maybe if I tried to learn it, I would have a similar response. > Also in that same vein is Morning > Morgantown because I always think of it as an imaginary day out with the > child she gave up. Morning Morgantown does seem really sad when interpreted this way! Anyway, I guess it's not really correct to make a statement like "Joni's music is cerebral", since we are all so different and respond differently to her music. A number of people have mentioned many other of her songs that they respond to with tears. And, I realized after I sent my first question about it, that there are at least four of Joni's songs that I have responded to with tears on at least one occasion, but these four songs do not *always* make me feel tearful, whereas there are certain songs sung by other artists, or written by other people, that always make me cry if I hear them or try to sing them. So for me, I still find Joni's music mostly cerebral, but I can see that this is not true for other people. I totally love her songs - they are like gorgeous jewels to me - I am not trying to diminish her in any way, just trying to say that my response to her music is not a tearful one, for the most part. It has been very interesting to read other people's impressions. > Also, since my daughter went to college, I COMPLETELY LOSE IT every time I > play Sisotowbell Lane. That's a killer. Well, as a mom myself, I can certainly relate to the sadness of your daughter going away to college, Sue. I am sure I am going to be a basket case when my girls go off to school. I would probably cry, too, singing that song. > Oh, yeah and then there's Magdalene > Laundries. Maybe I'm just a MUSH. I forgot about Magdalene Laundries! Other songs that press my emotive buttons include: “Visions of Johanna” by Bob Dylan. (Particularly the acoustic version on “Live 1966”. ) “Belltower” by Dave Dobbyn. (Kiwi Hell may know this one.) “Waterloo Sunset” by the Kinks. (A beautiful song from the 1960s. It has the same effect on me now as it did way back then.) "Sands of Time" by Fleetwood Mac. (A Danny Kirwin song - his loss to music is a tragedy.) I know I could think of others but I must get to work! Cheers, John (in Sydney). __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This email server is running an evaluation copy of the MailShield anti- spam software. So many songs so little time... I know that me older brother can't hear Amelia without wanting to cry (he wanted to fly) Certain songs made me cry when I heard them at specific moments Harry's House made me burst into uncontrollable tears once when I was 20. My parents were going through a separation. And it seemed that song chronicled my parents married life for a while. I could even hear my mum saying on the phone 'When'll you be home Darly?' (darly was their pet name for each other, short for darling) and this song I played it when there was an impasse in the arguments and the fighting. It was a trying time for both my brother and I. I play the song on the guitar now and I remember the bad times, nearly 8 years ago. I guess I couldn't believe that Joni knew what she was singing about. The hiss of suburbia, like a pressure cooker going off in the kitchen, waiting to blow... Sisotowbell Lane has really sweet sentiments especially in the last verse about 'we always do, we'll wait for you' My Secret Place ' Out of all of the girls that you see, in bleachers and cafe windows, sitting flirting with someone, looking to have some fun, why did you pick me?' Down To You: 'In the mornings there are lovers in the street They look so high You brush against a stranger and you both apologise' That feeling when a pair of lovers being in love taking your attention, pointing out your loneliness, by their affection, and you bump into someone, so taken by their loveliness (in the original sense of the word). Like a punch in the guts. Lesson In Survival 'I went to see a friend tonight Was Very late when I walked in My talking as it rambled Revealed suspicious reasonings My visit seemed to darken him. I told him these things I'm telling you now watched them buckle up in his brow When you did too deep You lose good sleep And makes you heavy company I will always love you Hands alike Magnets and Iron The souls.' The Esalen Institute is/was such a hard to reach, limited size place that the artists no doubt felt a lot more comfortable than say, Woodstock. :) Also, most of the artists came out of the folkie world (this was the Big Sur FOLK Festival, remember) where it was the norm for artists to mingle with each other and the common folks, play several small workshop stages during the day, etc. Fortunately, the folkie world is still this way, and even the big (for the genre) names like Tom Paxton, Eric Andersen, Garnet Rogers, etc. are accessible at concerts and festivals. I have been booking a folk music concert series in Anaheim for two years now, and have had to deal with several artist riders. Nothing about little triangular sandwiches, fortunately! :) About the most exotic requirement has been cranberry juice. Maine and Nebraska > divide their electoral vote according to the results in each congressional > district, but everywhere else, it's winner-take-all. thanks, Kakki, for the education. i'm going to take it a step further to let you all know something that most americans don't - citizens of washington,dc unlike the rest of the nation, are not nationally represented. we are treated in violation of the constitution - we are taxed, we are not represented. today at work, we were discussing the electorate. someone said we had no electors, which i didn't believe. i knew we had no senators or congressmen, but i thought our presidential vote did count, as i thought numbers of electors were determined by population. someone else was sure that we have 1 elector, which didn't make any sense to me, because i know that alaska has 4, and that state's and my city's population are roughly the same (around 600K). doesn't seem fair, does it - 1 elector per 150K in alaska, 1 per 600K in dc... you may now wonder, how did we get one elector if we have no congressional representation? we actually do have one congresswoman who represents us in the house, but she can't vote on any bills, she can only get up and speak and beg others to see her point of view, without having any true bargaining power. you can bet that DC doesn't see too much in the way of pork. this is a situation that we DCers would like to change, but republicans want nothing to do with allowing us legal representation (being a democratic-leaning city, it would mean more competition for them). we do get some congressional funding as an attempt to make up for the boatload of tax dollars we don't get for all the government property here, but congress (under pig newt, if i remember correctly) formed a "control board" to levy power over how we spend that money. they decided that since the city was doing very poorly under major barry, they'd just take half the mayor's power away. they have provided spending contingencies, like we can't give out clean needles to drug users and still use some of our funding for clinics (i'm approximating here - it's been a while since i've read the fine print). so congress can actually overturn decisions we make for ourselves by not allowing things to be in our budget if they don't like them. don't miss the irony here - the republicans, the politicians who are always talking about how national government should stay out of local government, are the bearers of this torch on the nation's capitol... and the people that live in the very capitol of our democratic nation are without representation as promised in the constitution. barbara np: youssou n'dour, joko ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #584 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
