Big trees. Old trees. Living things capable of staying alive many times our life spans.” This was an excellent post, Mark! I really enjoyed it. (Also other posts on trees by CC, Marcel and Victor.) And, Hell, I understand your feelings completely. I’m sorry to hear that the tree on Auckland’s One Tree Hill has gone. I read about the earlier attempt on its life but thought it had been saved. Trees (and other such sites) can have great significance in the lives of people and communities. Has anyone read the historian Simon Scharma’s monumental book “Landscape and Memory”? It’s a ‘hefty’ read but contains some wonderful insights into such matters. I grew up on the northern side of Sydney harbour and there were two trees that I remember with great affection. They were both enormous and clearly very old Morton Bay figs. One was lost when they put a bloody great expressway right through the older part of North Sydney in the 1960s (half our street went as well). The other tree, however, still stands at the northern end of the local cricket and football oval. I played sport in its shadow during my schooldays and, until recently (when Mr. Murdoch’s evil empire killed them off) followed the fluctuating fortunes of the North Sydney Bears rugby league team when they played their home matches there. I don’t live in North Sydney anymore but that old Morton Bay fig tree has been a part of my life since childhood and will always have a special place in my affections. I think that recognizing such ‘sacred sites’ is an important means of maintaining a connection with your roots, with giving your life a sense of ‘place’. I’m sure we all have such places that are important (‘sacred’) to us. Sorry for the length of this NJC comment (I suppose I should have hunted out references in Joni’s songs of places that were clearly important to her). Being a ‘Local History Librarian’ I tend to get a bit long-winded when such subjects come up. :-) Cheers, John (in Sydney). __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 18:23 +1000 From: john low Subject: Astrological Census NJC Great work, Wally! Now I'm reminded of the big maple tree that grew in the front yard of the house I grew up in. I used to love to 'climb up in the branches just to sway there in some breeze.' I used to get as near to the top as I could. Our house was on a hill and this tree was very tall. About all that was visible from up there was a sea of trees (Bilbo climbing the tree in Mirkwood always reminded me of it) and I remember I could see one of the buildings way downtown on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Trees are miraculous beings. And the subject of trees is a bit of synchronicity...the street I live on is lined with old oaks, planted back in the 20's. Greenville, SC used to be the textile capital of the country, and the older homes on the street were built for the managers that worked in the textile mill nearby (no longer in action). Anyway, these oaks are now all huge and majestic, and provide a canopy up and down the whole street - pretty cool, even though this time of year they drop leaves so steadily it's like snow! Unfortunately, many of the newer people moving in want to take down the trees since the shade makes it hard to grow a lawn, and people here seem obsessed with having these lush yards! Our neighbors across the street just cut theirs down this week. Looking at the stump is almost like seeing a corpse. Sorta sad. I also remember fondly our "picture-takin' tree" in Kwajalein. We used to always go there when my shutterbug Dad wanted to take pictures of us kids. I think it was a banyan tree, but it had these great gnarly branches great hor hanging and climbing and all kinds of poses. I hope it's still there! Mags agrees and adds: I agree with Bob, Mark, Kate, Hell... everyone who has so eloquently posted feelings, thoughts and memories around special trees in your lives. I love this thread. There have been many special trees in my life. When I lived in the country recently, I used to go to the river across the road from home and literally lean on an old willow tree for comfort. There were a few big old willows which lined the banks and one day, the city got hold of them and stripped them back (chain saw massacre!!!) one of which was cut right down. The stump, as Bob said, looked awful. It left a lasting impression on me. So very sad. I am most at home with trees and I am well aware of the spirit that lies within each one. Imagine what trees have seen. The stories they could tell. The lives they could unfold. Magic. Last night, Brian and I were listening to a song that he loves so much from Loreena McKennitt's 'the mask and the mirror' CD. It is entitled 'The Two Trees' . I suggest you have a listen, this is by far one of her most beauteous songs rendered. Loreena is often influenced by great writers and this one is based on a poem by Yeats. I found a web site which lays the two out side by side, how fitting considering the images evoked from the song. If you would like to have a look, here is the url: http://frontpage.dallas.net/~tobias/WBY-LM_Parallel.htm I especially love the image depicted. np: The Two Trees, mask in the mirror, Loreena McKennitt love Mags, who feels like the luckiest woman on the face of this earth. infact, i know i am. > > > ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 12:31:52 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: One Tree Hill (NJC) My memory of an old tree now gone isn't quite as sentimental as the rest of you have so eloquently written, but it's a slow Saturday so here goes: When I was growing up in Ft. Myers, we had a huge mango tree in our front yard. I was quite a climber back then, and could make it to the top of old "Mighty Mango" without ever a fall. I was six at the time, and the little girl across the street (Marisa was her name) was the same age. We were best of friends and both of us would climb "Mighty Mango" nearly every day. One day, while hidden in the thick leaves of Mighty Mango, Marisa and I got a little curious of what little boys have and little girls don't. Well, needless to say, one thing led to another. Soon we were playing *Doctor* almost on a daily basis, hidden from the entire world. Yes, I had discovered the opposite sex at age 6. ( I know, it was probably later than most of the list :~) Anyway, that summer of 1962 we had a horrible tropical storm that struck our area. The winds were so powerful that Mighty Mango was knocked partially down. It was so badly damaged, my father had to have the rest of our tree removed. All that was left was a stump, and I cried and cried. I know the tragedy of my tree was an act of God, unlike many of the stories I've read. Still this tree played an important role in my childhood, and I still think of Mighty Mango. I never knew what became of Marisa, but in case she's on the JMDL "Hi Marisa! Thanks for our childhood memories, but I'm gay" :~) In case some of you think this is another "figure skating" story, your wrong. I am telling the truth!!! Maybe like losing a face from Mt. Rushmore. Or the stones of > Stonehenge falling over. just a few months ago, one of my neighbors cut down one of the oaks on my street (Oakwood). this tree was 350-400 years old, big, beautiful, the tallest thing on my block. it was encroaching on their house, and despite all sorts of protest, and the fact that an oak that old grows *very* slowly, they took it down. when i first moved in, 6 years ago, one of my neighbors chained herself to the tree when they attempted to remove it then. at the time, the house belonged to the city, so it survived the first round. but the woman who lives there has since bought it at some ridiculously low cost because she works for the city and figured out how to work the system. so this time, no one could stop her. i wept for a couple of days over this. sobbed. my next door neighbor had what can only be called an episode, screaming and crying all over the block. for days, i had to pass the carcas of this big beautiful tree; sliced up pieces of it were strewn in the yard and on the sidewalk. it was a very complicated event - it brought out the best and the worst in people (i can't even tell half the story - it would take me hours). down the next block are two more big oaks that i think will eventually fall on their own - they are on a hill and boxed into a yard by a brick wall and those places will not hold them. i can only take comfort that there are two other big oaks (about 300 yrs old) on my block, and a big maple tree in my front yard. i will always miss that big oak in the yard 4 houses down, and i think the earth misses it, too. i think we all have monuments and artifacts that we never want to lose... barbara np: emmylou harris, red dirt girl ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 13:44:39 EDT From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: VideoTree #2 Sign ups are HERE!!! What a super thread for us wannabie guitar heroes, It's a funny old world indeed, there are are as many valid choices of guitar heroes as there are people to choose them IMO. The fact that he only played one note in some of his solos was for me deliberate. John Peel ( the UK's most respected DJ ) summed Neil's playing up for me, he said "When Neil Young plays a solo he plays as if he knows that elusive note is in there somewhere and he's damn well going to find it " From: Siresorrow@aol.com <> .<< and he..in MY HUMBLE OPINION...is no where even in the same league as any guitar virtuoso/i like page or howe or hendrix or clapton or so on and so forth.>> For me the number of notes per minute never comes into it, "It's not what you've got, it's the way that you use it ". Clapton, Page and Howe are great guitar players but not of the three play in a way that moves me like Neil does. Which brings me to Joni, where does she come in your list of virtuosos. She doesn't play any solos. Anyone, IMHO, who stands alone up on a stage in front of an audience with a guitar, is a solo player. In my book, I must admit Joni's style of playing washes sounds at my brain in a way that Clapton/Howe/Page etc never can. In a poll of the 100 Greatest Guitar Players of all time, in Mojo magazine June 96. Neil came 9th and Joni came in at No 77. All that proves is that this was the choice of the couple of thousand readers of that magazine at that time.Similarly in Guitarist magazine in Oct 98 in their Top Ten Female guitar players, guess who came top ? She doesn't play any solos. >> well...as i named the three above,..speed was never ever a part of my appreciation of them. or note's per minute. you know.....how many note's per minute can you play on a guitar with a bow? to me, the issue of virtuoso was more...who did what first? not many people will say much more has ever been done with an electric guitar than what jimmi hendrix did. he was the qunatum change. after that...it was shades of change. i don't think joni or neil can compare in that arena. they are different languages. one is singer songwriter...open tunings...guitar and harmonica...harmony....while the other is sheer expression on six strings in modal form. they are different languages to me. neither one better than the other, but both losing something in the translation of comparison. patrick np. j. brooke - blood from a stone ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 12:41:26 -1000 (HST) From: dogbyte@aloha.net (french) Subject: but ... she'll check it out. lori wrote; >Blue was released in 1971, a time when the attitude of >a girl from the prairie might still be a bit >conservative, or at least not as "worldly" as it would >later become. looking in my 'joni mitchell companion' book, the first photo at the newport falls festival 1967, has joni wearing a striped dress, a great big grin and (what we call around here) a case of 'bubble eye' which always occurs after you take your 'glaucoma' medicine. the second photo is of her and leonard cohen and it looks like he get the bubble eye too......now what did i do with that roach???? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 18:57:38 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: october 28!!!!!!!!!!!!!! njc Happy Birthday Julius you gorgeous man with the best smile in the world!! Wow, I've wanted to tell someone about this for a >long time, but couldn't bear the thought of a dumbfounded stare/rolling eye >response. hi CC, what a beautiful and sad story you've shared, thank you.(weeping) as a multigenerational woodworker i have an 'ingrained' fondness for trees and have studied, among others, japanese techniques and theory of construction and joinery. it is said that they were several centuries ahead in sophistication of their craft. inevitably every book on the subject begins with the trees soul or spirit. the value system symbolized by Shinto beliefs stressed love and respect for wood as a living organism. a tree is believed to possess a spirit and a carpenter, when he cuts down a tree , incurs a moral debt. one of the themes that runs throughout japanese culture is the belief that nature expects from man a price for coexistence. a carpenter must put a tree to uses that assures its continued existence, preferably as a thing of beauty to be treasured for centuries. there is a prayer that was recited before laying a saw to a standing tree that goes in part "i vow to commit no act that will extinguish the spirit of this tree' and only by keeping this pledge does the carpenter repay his debt to nature. the temples and shrines in japan are not only admired for their tribute to their religion but also for the perepetuation of the spirit of the materials of which they were made and the fullfillment of the obligation incurred to nature for the use of the earths resources. also the carpenters tools were thought to have a spirit of their own since parts of which were made out of wood. they celebrated their tools every new years day by displaying them in a place of honor and close by on a sheet of rice paper, a tangerine and two rice cakes, this traditional gesture was a way of thanking the tools for their work and for the crucial part they play in the woodworkers (shokunin's) life....... so much for that, don't we all have a favorite plant or tree or stand of trees. surely without them we would cease to exist. i know what my favorite plant is, although i still hold my orchids a close second. CC, i'll put a green pin on the jmdl map if you like, for your tree, and one in NZ for hell's tree..... now where did i put that roach?????? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 17:15 +1000 From: john low Subject: RE: Astrological Census NJC wallyk wrote: >oh come on! all goats say that and each one of them is at the top of his/her >personal mountain! >wallyk, 100% tough goat Well, tough goat Wally, I’m afraid I’m sticking to my story.
