Well, usually noise doesn't matter. That is to say it isn't a design feature demanded by consumers. In some markets, like dishwashers, the premium makes ARE quieter because some are willing to pay for the better bearings needed. (Quiet bearings are more precisely built and therefore more expensive.) On the other hand, in some industries the economics of progress has provided a big financial incentive for quietness. I'm thinking of the design of automobile engines. Those folks have been studying and systematically reducing noise and vibration for years. The energy produced by the engine either goes into making the car go (a good thing) or into noise and vibration (a bad thing). If you reduce the noise and vibration, the fuel economy goes up (a competitive advantage). So modern cars are way quieter than the muscle cars of yore. All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu Harvesting shards from an aborted engineering degree..... Toshi Reagon and Erin Hamilton did fine work at Joni's Jazz, too. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #552 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
