As a kid, my mother used to tell me stories about movie stars. She'd see George Montgomery pitching furniture polish and tell me that he used to be married to Dinah Shore. We'd see Patricia Neal in "The Fountainhead" and I learned that she had an affair with Gary Cooper. Get to Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and I learned that they were "in love," but couldn't get married because Spencer, (she was on first name basis with all of them as if she hobnobbed with them everyday), was married to Mrs. Tracy and he was a staunch Catholic. Staunch Catholic. Screwed around, (swertagod, my mother's euphemism), the clash of the two drove me nuts. Didn't the "screwing" negate the "staunch?" There were other examples as well: the aforementioned Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, various movie and book plots. And always, the main character, male or female, would "screw" and then hold back from getting married because of this staunchness. Wouldn't get divorced because they could not get remarried in the church or receive the sacraments. And yet, they continued to screw. What was with that? Drove me bananarama to say the least and the priests and nuns could not help me. If they answered at all, it focused on the "well, if they divorced, they couldn't remarry in the church," with no answer to "but adultery is a mortal sin and they are not in a state of grace already." I couldn't reconcile that one at all and it marked one of the first and deepest cracks in my belief in the religion. It was years until I had the maturity to understand that religion, while divinely inspired, is interpreted and practiced by humans. Volume 11 in the "Covers & Contributions" series is complete, and is another jewel in the Covers crown if I do say so myself. Before I run down the songs, let me first thank those who supplied the material... Gerry McNee (a gracious plenty, I thank you on bended McKnee!) Brenda Walker Bill Pearson Bob Murphy Leslie Mixon (I can't say enough thanks to you, gal!) John Van Tiel (ditto to my Euro Covers branchmeister) Now here's a detailed "Marcel-style" rundown of the tracks, except that I'll employ upper case letters as well. ;~) 1. John Handy: The Hissing Of Summer Lawns - This is a very nice funky sax rendition, and the first HOSL cover we've got in the collection. 2. Singers Unlimited: Both Sides Now - This one appears kind of cheesy, but actually has some pretty cool harmonies working. It's amazing that after having listened to 60 or so versions of BSN that I still enjoy a unique spin on it, but I do. 3. Venice: Woodstock - This was an accidental find, as it was a hidden track, it's an unplugged version of CSNY's interpretation of the song. It sounds spontaneous and genuine, big thumbs up on this one! 4. Green Day: Big Yellow Taxi - This one is from a concert, and they only play about 2/3 of the song, but it's in their Buzzcocks/metal style, and is a lot of fun. You can almost see the shit-eatin' grin on Billie Joe's mug! 5. Baillie & The Boys: Both Sides Now - This a great country version, with some nice pedal steel and a great vocal. 6. Astrid Seriese: River - Really beautiful, this is a live version as well, but the audience is silent so it sounds studio. Astrid performs the song the same way Holly Cole does, if you're familiar with Holly's cover. This one gives Dianne Reeves' cover a run for the money imo. 7. Kiki Dee: Carey - I was a bit wary of this one, but it's great! She's got a knockout voice and has a lot of fun singing it. 8. Neil Diamond: Free Man In Paris - Once again Neil goes over the top with the drama here, but that's his way and it wouldn't be Neil Diamond otherwise. Musically he takes some risks which makes this one enjoyable. 9. Brothers Four: Both Sides Now - Yuck. I'm scratching my head trying to think of something nice to say about this one, but no can do. It sucks. Period. 10. Big Country - Big Yellow Taxi - NOW we're talkin'!! This one REALLY cooks. Now I don't think this is the same Big Country that did "Fields of Fire", but I could be wrong, cuz it's a female vocalist. Anyway, there's a fiddle solo that cooks, the whole band just tears it up, it'll have you up on your feet and forgetting the Brothers Four! 11. Marie LaForet: Bothe Sides Now - Another French version, she sings purty, but I can't understand a dang thing she's sayin'! :~) 12. Diamond Head: This Flight Tonight - OK, this is really a cover of Nazareth's TFT cover which is available on Volume 4. They do a good version, they don't really bring much to the party in terms of originality, though. 13. David McAlmont: Conversation - One of the highlights, if not THE best selection on this volume, very original, rythmic version with great vocals and instrumentation, this one's a REAL find, and the first Conversation of the collection! 14. Same Brave Apollo: Woodstock - Another one for the "Weird & Wonderful" pile...this one would sound great if you were really stoned, I suppose. I dig it because they try something different with it, and once again it's a tribute to Joni's talent that so many various musicians see these songs in different ways! 15. Evson: Both Sides Now - Unspectacular, but the guy's got a good voice, he sounds like Darius Rucker from Hootie & The Blowfish. Pleasant enough. 16. Emilliana Torrini: Chelsea Morning - Very pretty rendition, this song is so upbeat it's hard to ruin, even Neil Diamond's version is tolerable. 17. Dave Van Ronk - Urge For Going 18. Dave Van Ronk - Chelsea Morning 19. Dave Van Ronk - Both Sides Now Dave is Joni's contemporary, she speaks highly of his version of BSN because of the world-weariness of his voice. Some of these are from the early 70's, when his voice was clearer, and some are from the 90's after years of gargling Drano I guess. Anyway, I like his imperfect voice, after all it's very Tom Waits-ish, and y'all know I did Tom! So there you have it - Volume 11 in the can. If you want a copy, you can send me a blank MUSIC CD (be sure it says MUSIC or AUDIO in the packaging) along with a self-addressed stamped envelope, or 5 bucks which will cover the blank, the padded mailer, postage, a nice cardstock songlist insert, and a CD label which pictures Joni with Refuge, her tour band of '83. Euro-jmdlers, John Van Tiel will be glad to fix you up when he gets his copy...I mailed out copies to contributors and subscribers Tuesday, I guess with Columbus Day the mail got backed up a bit. I had been taught that if one died without being baptised, there was no way one could be accepted by God into Heaven. Of course one had to be baptised a Catholic. My teacher suffered the agony of giving birth to a still born child. The baby had, of course, died without beign baptised. I thought then that if I could think this was so unfair then God would to. I guess that was when I decided that religion was not about God but about people and their desitre for control and their desire to have others accepte their ideas as Truth. For about 8 years now. :) Earlier in the week, a co-worker explained to me that my idea of beginning a relationship based on honesty and truth and directness was all wrong. See, I always thought that the head games began way later- with arguments about females wanting to set the thermostat at 80F in the winter and 65F in the summer etc. I HAD IT ALL WRONG!! The way to a trusting relationship is to play head games FROM THE START. Who knew!? Apparently, the CORRECT approach is to go out and make a point of NOT LOOKING. When the woman of your dreams is convinced that you're NOT interested, you go behind her back, to her friends, and get her phone number. When she gets a phone call from someone who she THOUGHT was NOT INTERESTED, she'll think I'm cute and irresistable. I must admit that I'm struggling with my FAITH in this approach although my co-worker means well. This has to be the most ridiculous method I've ever heard. So, I guess I'm asking the straight women of JMDL this question- "What the hell works?" Since I am an > art historian and art teacher I might be too serious on this, but tell me > what do you think???? Hi Karin and welcome to the JMDL Joni's insistence on printing photos of her paintings showing the frames (on posters, in the Mendel catalogue) has drawn criticism before from other people familiar with the conventions of art publication. I think it is another example of how Joni regards her works (both painting and music) as completely under her control and removed from what critics may define as a particular "school": i.e. this is how she chose to frame them, and if the frame is considered integral to the completeness of the painting, then that is how it will be shown, regardless of the format. Regarding the mix of lyrics and art in the Mendel catalogue, there can be no doubt that much of Joni's inspiration for her painting comes from her lyrics, since so many of the painting were done to grace album covers. The cover painting for the Both Sides Now cd is a combination of the lyrics of A Case Of You and the concept of Both Sides Now. Even though Joni has said "I sing my sorrow but I paint my joy" there is an undeniable link between the words and the images. The other day my postal carrier returned a package I tried to send and told me that anything mailed in a package is being checked/x-rayed for bombs and that packages sent directly with regular postage stamps on them are usually being returned to the sender who is being asked to take them directly to the post office for mailing. Judging from my experience in the past month with delays, these heightened security measures began before the latest conflict in the Middle East, but we might expect even more vigilance from the postal service with the current events there. What a disappointment! That is so bizarre! From one of my subscriptions, I recently received a "Time Inc. They've done a wonderful little (and accurate) capsule of her career. The only glitch occurs in naming her best albums where they call Night Ride Home "Come in From the Cold" (oh well). Their other picks are Blue, Court and Spark, Hissing and Turbulent Indigo. Some of the other musicians noted are Jimi, Stevie, Clapton, Chrissie Hynde, Paul Simon, Beatles (no. 1), Elvis (both Presley and Costello), Springsteen, Beach Boys, Dylan, Aretha, Janis and more. This is a book well worth having and is also available on the newstands now. $9.99 U.S/$14.99 Canadian. BOB i've been thinking about this one for a couple of days. It seems Bob Dylan was trying to model himself after someone when he first started. Woody Guthrie was his hero and he seemed to want to be the next generation's Woody. Whereas Joni always seemed to avoid patterning herself after someone. Everytime she got labeled or pigeon-holed in a category (folk, pop, jazz, etc.), she resisted and broke out. As has been said already on this thread, Dylan's contributions have been huge and he's certainly been recognized for them. It seems like it was a harder climb for Joni because she's a woman. I was thinking though, if I had to be stranded on an island with Joni CD's and only one other artist's, I don't think I'd pick Dylan. I think it would have to be Neil Young. I guess I'll think about this one some more over apples and cheeses. Finally, took my Voices poster in to be framed today. My husband noticed me looking back at the counter as we left it there. He put his arm around me and said, "They'll take good care of her, hon." Then he asked the gal that helped us select a frame, "When are visiting hours?" :) Maddie. ------------------------------ Date: 15 Oct 00 02:40:29 MET DST From: Lori Reason Subject: Re: [Re: [Re: I went looking for a cause...]] AMAZING!!
