Yes, that is what I heard--That Blue was about Graham. Suprised me, but thinking about it, it makes some sense. In Willy she is saying that he is the one reluctant to live with her ("he says he'd love to live with me but for an ancient injury" so like you, the line "crown & anchor me" seemed to fit that same relationship. I don't know if Graham ever had a drug problem, I don't think he did. He sure stood by Croz when he was in trouble & tried everything to help him. I always thought the line "songs are like tatoos" is just about how once you write a song (especially if it is confessional) it is with you forever like a tatoo. And "been to sea before" could be about her having a previous relationship (with Croz who was a sailor) & not wanting to go the same way again. To me, in Blue, it doesn't sound like she is talking to someone with a drug problem, rather that she is talking in general about how drugs were so prevelant in the culture. There aren't really enough clues to pin this one down unless its true that Blue is Nash's nickname. c said: My conflicted understanding is that "Blue" was written about Graham Nash, because of reading somewhere that "Blue" was Nash's nickname and the line, "You know I've been to sea before, crown and anchor me or let me sail away" was Joni's ultimatum to Nash for marriage. I've never been able to reconcile that interpretation having been given,"we don't need no piece of paper from the city hall keeping us tied and true" just three tracks previously. There's a tragic vein (no pun intended) that begins around here concerning heroin addiction, "songs are like tatoos","underneath the skin an empty space to fill in", "acid booze and ass, needles guns and grass", and later more overtly as "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire." I don't know if Nash, like Taylor had this demon to contend with and I don't know much about David Blue, but this may turn out to be a continuing mystery. And I'm okay with that. Leslie said: At first I thought you were referring to Crosby and now with the Woman Of Heart & Mind hint, "...you come to me like a little boy..." Do the dots connect to "Willie"....is my child he is my father.... I really was just sharing a light hearted memory. But I just can't keep my mouth shut! My Catholic elementary school was much different, it was racist, sexist, hypocritical and mean spirited. And I believe, in my experience, most Catholic school survivors mirror that same experience with both their elementary & high school education, rather than the one Mary and I had in high school. My school had the BVM's, Blessed Virgin Mary order, while we referred to them as Black Veiled Monsters. I totally brag about my wonderful Alvernia High School/Chicago, it was the coolest and run by the strongest, open-minded, liberal women, who have guided and influenced my life more than anyone else. I still see women from that school - both teachers and students ... and there is love! Someday remind me to tell you how the nuns and teachers at Our Lady of The Angels Catholic Elementary school had to come into class just to try to back off of their out-right racism, when integration was inevitable. I say this because the nuns & lay teachers had used the most ugly terms in reference to our African American Sisters & Brothers, before that day of reckoning! Besides that the Catholic church doesn't much like my life style. Proud to be an ex-Catholic and surprised to see a thread in reference to one of my off-hand remarks! How did you decide where to go? >> When I graduated from college, I moved from NC, where I was born and raised, to NYC. As I look back, the decision to move to NY seems to have been predetermined for me. At around the age of 12, having never been to NY, I announced that I was going to live in NY (I must have watch too many episodes of "That Girl!"). And so, just about a week after graduating college, I moved to NY not knowing anyone. That was in 1979 and I am still here. My lover and I are now talking about moving out to LA. Our desire to move to LA is based on our love of LA and the surrounding area. We are both at a point in our lives where we would like to make some changes in our lifestyle. NY can be intense, and while I'm such that LA can be intense as well, there seems to be a more relaxed attitude in LA (and the West Coast in general) than what we experience here in the Northeast. Part of this may be due to our love of the desert. We both would love to have some outdoor space (more than our window boxes), and I miss driving (call me crazy--my lover does). We haven't made the move because it is just plain scary. At the age of 19, moving to NY was exciting. At the age of 42, moving seems much more difficult--more responsibilities, etc. For both of us, moving would be difficult in terms of careers. My lover works in the financial end of Broadway, and while there are some opportunities in LA in theatre and perhaps TV and/or film for him, it won't be easy. And for me, it would mean starting over. I'm a psychotherapist and would have to get re-licensed. And then there is building a practice, which can take years. It is hard to think about going backwards in terms of career and lifestyle (especially since we want to move in order to improve our lifestyle). So if we do move, I'm uncertain if I will remain in my profession or if I will make a change (I really like my work, but don't know that I want to "start over"--I've been thinking that if I have to start over, it might be fun to try something new. ) But who knows what we will do. At any rate, I could identify with your struggle. From my understanding, Graham did drugs but never had a problem with them, but he was surrounded by many who did, and especially put in a lot of time trying to get Crosby off them. I've mentioned this before, but it may relate to the song Blue if you think about it - the CSNY biographphy, Graham takes the responsibility for the ending of his relationship with Joni. He claims that he was off too much with the boys and touring with CSN and did not put as much time and devotion into the relationship as he should have. There is something so sweet there between them that is relflected in her song, Willie, and in his song, Our House. I also hear it in way she sings "I Love You" in Blue. ******************************************** Kate Bennett featured this month at Taylor Guitars www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** - -----Original Message----- From: Kakki [mailto:KakkiB@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 12:35 PM To: Kate Bennett; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Blue Kate wrote: > TA DA, c Karma & Leslie M win this round! I would have never guessed it was about Graham, either - and also think that on the surface it seems more to fit James Taylor or Crosby. But thinking about it, it does make sense to me now and also confirms a few intutions I've had, but which I hesitate to say on the list because I'm weary of the offlist flames I've been getting for daring to discuss Joni's lyrics as if she is a real person. > I don't know if Graham ever had a drug problem, I don't think >he did. He sure stood by Croz when he was in trouble & tried >everything to help him. Graham's support and loyal friendship to Crosby throughout his trials and tribulations has been well-documented. "Crown" = make me first in your life, and "anchor" = be a stabilizing influence for me, be my rock. It was like some large group and we all traded partners. Carol Gabbert was the one I went steady with, and somewhere she has my Lane Tech pin and I have a rock that she painted, still on my shelf after all these years. The nights I went to see Monterey Pop 3 nights in a row, it was with 3 different Alvernia girls and by buddies who brought different dates on two of those nights all brought Alvernia girls. This memory means nothing and is pointless (as are the vast majority of my posts) but it allows me to say that I knew Alvernia students and the students were also "the strongest, open-minded, liberal women" in political and feminist terms and were just so much more mature and knowledgeable on culture and art... quite a group to hang with! Shared many a Goodman Theatre play and Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art trips with Alvernia students. Ranking: Immaculata had the best looking, but were very stuck up. Madonna - better left unsaid. Good Counsel - too into themselves. Someday remind me to tell you how the nuns and teachers at Our Lady of The Angels Catholic Elementary school WHOA! Our Lady of the Angels? Was in a very racist part of Chicago (I know, near where I grew up, OLOTA was on Thomas and what, I forget now, I was a little more northwest at Belmont and Cicero) but Susan said that. Our Lady of the Angels is a major event in the life of every person who was a grammar school student in Chicago in 1958, with the Our Lady of Angels fire of 1 December 1958, when 93 kids and 3 nuns burned to death. Susan, were you there when the fire happened? It was so horrible; students found dead kneeling next to their desks, student plunging to their deaths on fire, the parents banging fruitlessly on the iron bars that made up the fence around the school that the ladders couldn't reach around to reach the kids... It was horrific and indelible in the minds of all Chicagoans of school age at that time. The biggest lesson we learned was never, ever respect authority. Obedience could lead to death. The vast majority of kids died because the nuns were waiting for an "official" dismissal. When smoke billows under the door, get the hell out by any means, you do not wait for an "official" dismissal. 93 kids and 3 nuns... whenever two Chicagoan of that age get together and the fire comes up in conversation, it gets very intense. Sorry to go on and on about the fire, but it was a prime event in my life. Every child, every student, every teacher knew it could happen in their school. I think a study of those who were students in Chicago schools in 1958 would yield some interesting results. No wonder perhaps that we were repeatedly taking on the system in 68 (Dem convention), 69 (Days of Rage), 70 (the Sly and Family Stone thing.) Obeying authority was death. Thinking for your self and doing your own thing (get the hell out of the burning building despite what the teacher/nun says) became a part of all our psyches. Sorry to bring up such a downer topic but whenever someone mentions the Our Lady of Angels, I automatically flash back to that horror, coming home from school (I was in 1st grade) and seeing one of the first live tv reports ever. a school that looked just like mine on fire with dead students, 93 of them. The grief of all Chicago was so overwhelming Anyone else remember the fire? I think Kate in Colorado went there too. Vernon, Virginia, to live with Mary ... agreed with Mary that a $300 increase in rent was ridiculous and that she should buy a house if she wanted to do that ... moved with Mary in August, to a very cute house in a very suburban but refreshingly diverse neighborhood in Wheaton, Maryland. So there it is in a nutshell, with only a few significant things omitted. Joni has played in the background and in the foreground all the while. A wonderful sound track for a wonderful life! The first time I heard "Blue" (the week it came out) I strongly related to the sense of sadness and futility Joni conveys because so many around me, including someone I loved very much, were also sinking in the then-hip hell of drugs and the rest. I never learned until much later, as chronicled by many, including Crosby himself in a few books, just how wild and dark and crazy the scene became. In the past few years Joni has expressed that the 60s were a bad time for her. That really surprised me at first, but thinking upon it some more, her bad memories may not have only been because of the loss of her child or the way the music business treated her. > I have always been so drawn to the photos of Joni & Graham, especially the > one in the car where she is writing & he is looking on.
