She was extremely human and open to me, and after she told me about her medical problems (did she intuitively know I am a doctor?) she obviously wanted to know about me. I was too stunned and filled up with feeling and I couldnt speak. The look of disappointment on her face is one Ill never forget. I hope I meet with her again. Chris, i totally agree: Sitcom is hilarious. it was quite unexpected, and cruel but still hilarious. the other "foreign" films that i loved are:Diva, Jesus of Montreal, Manon Des Sources, and there was a german film that i loved, but can't remember the title......i just know that one of our resident movie buffs know this. as far as i remember there was a central character who was a musical genius, and his neighbour wasin love wiht him. so was the nighbours sister. the musical guy it seemed was more interested in girls than gusy and he liked the sister. it was a beautiful film and would love to get my hands on a copy, if anyone kows the title. and who could forget Life Is Beautiful(italian), Shine(australian), Cube(canadian), Head On (australian), and Beautiful People(British) GARRET ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 16:23:55 +0100 From: "Garret" Subject: i woke up yesterday sucking a lemon (NJC) Somehow i refrained from writing this at 2.00 am last night:-) I FINALLY got to see Radiohead in concert yesterday, Saturday 7th of October, Thom Yorkes birthday. this show was way outside Dublin so we had to get buses. just let me set the scene, teh all-Ireland replays were yesterday, so there were some very merry Kerrymen on the bus wih us to the concert and they had the entire bus ecstatic. they had us singing, cheering, and dancing (well, i made up hte dancing part, it was a bus afterall!) so we were well and truly excited before we ever got to the site of hte show. we got to Punchestown around 5.30pm and we could see the Radiohead big top from the bus. it was a big blue tent with about seven or eight peaks with a blinking red light on top of each pead. it was designed to allow the best sound possible for the delivery of their music. it was also designed so htat the biggest crowd they would perform to was 10,000. apparently in 1997 Radiohead were playing their biggest crowd to date in a show (which i missed for stupid reasons) here in Dublins RDS -(that's where my college exams are eld:-( -they were playing to 38000 people, and they were very anxious. they didnt like the fuss. they didnt feel they could live up to the hype. the night before the show thom had a dream about hopelessness. and his song How to disappear completely from Kid A is about this experience. there were three flood light type things shinign up into the sky, and they were meeting in the air. apparently they were supposed to look like the "farmgirl" teddy bear that acts as symbol for radiohead lately. well, i'd been waiting for this day for years, at least since i missed the 1997 show. for the past few days there have been stories of Radiohead and Michael Stipe parteeeeeeeeing in U2's hotel The Clarence in Dublin's Temple Bar.....i was in the area on Friday night but i didn't get to see them (i was in U2's nightclub The Kitchen, an awful place) but i was affected by the atmosphere. we had been led to believe that there was no support act, so there was a general air of confusion when Clinic came out on stage. on wiht the show......i may be mixing up some of the details, but then i was so overjoyed to be so close to RADIOHEAD that i'm surprised that i remember anything at all!! Thom and the guys finally came onstage about 8.40 and launched in to an unrecognisably rocky version of National Anthem.....no more Charles Mingus influenced sax....just plain old guitars and drums.....and some technical jiggery pokery noises generated by an odd looking box that Jonny Greenwood was leaning over. the crowd went wild! I got to the very front during this song and was duely crushed! after the song, they stopped for a few seconds for Thom to getr a guitar and the whole audience launched into an unplanned sequence of Happy Birthday; he was scarlett! i swear to God, the man blused and laughed! somone threw a teddy bear (cuddly toy for our american friends) on to the stage and he picked it up and read teh card attached and laughed! Airbag followed! i really don't remember the entire set list or what order they played things. here's what i do remember; the songs from the new album were greeted very well by the crowd, even if i was one of the few that knew the lyrics. the songs from OKComputer met massive appluase,as did those from the Bends. they didn't play Creep (i expected that), they never played High and Dry or Fake Plastic Trees which was disappointing, but i won't dwell on that. they did play My Iron Lung, No Surprises, an amazing version of Karma Police with Jonny on piano, Paranoid Android, Lucky, Everything in its right place, Kid A, Optimistic, Idioteque, and Motion Picture Soundtrack, and Just. they played a song from the My Iron Lung EP but i dont remember which one it was. one of those magical momnets for me was when Thom sang " float down the Liffey" in How to disappear conpletely and the crowd went wild!!! they did, to my surprise, sing Talk Show Host, which was awesome. they covered a song called The Thief by a band called Can (i think). they did two sets of encores. included was Exit Music which was slowed down and very moving. and i think that they performed a Tim Buckley song. either that, or a new radiohead song which really reminded me of Tim Buckley. i'm no Tim Buckley fan though, so i'm not sure. this was another of those magical concert moments. the piano had been brought to the front of the stage and Thom Yorke had his back to where i was standing. it was a beautiful song, highlighted by teh amazing lights. about a minute into the song i realised that i could see Thoms face reflected in teh wooden panelling of the piano as he sang. that was a defining moment:-) the official barometer of "how much did i enjoy the show" tells me it was *almost* as good as teh REM satdium gig in Lansdowne Road last year. same barometer, of course, means that i can't talk out loud this morning, i cant move too fast, and despite that fact that i didn't drink last night i feel hungover ( i realise that it's four o clock in the after noon, but right now this IS morning time!) i was crushed, and shoved, and kicked, and knocked about, and i loved it folks! it was a great night:-) GARRET np(imh)- My Iron Lung from last night, remembering losing a shoe in the middle of this song! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 15:19:38 GMT From: leslie@torchsongs.com Subject: Blue I had heard that "Blue" was written for the late musician, David Blue, but always felt that Joni wrote it for James Taylor. I thank you for your comments and agree that one has be an excellent interpreter of song in order as well. Sarah Vaughn was one of the best. I also love Judy Collins and Joan Baez who did the same. I was able to know the writer of the song "Joe Hill," sung by Joan, when I was a 17 year-old green horn in LA back in 1975. The writer's name was Earl Robinson. It was explained to me how speaking about the Union back in those days could cost you your life. When I hear Joan sing the song, I felt she expresses the thoughts of the writer in a very real way. Joan is an excellent writer as well, but I feel her forte' is interpreting the songs of others. Thanks for the thread, Mark! Especially because when he found the albums he said "Whoa!" like he knew what he had discovered; like he had discovered the Rosetta Stone; like he had discovered a Bible; like a stack of albums in 1969 was like discovering a gourmet meal (for life). In 1972 I was reading almost every word in every issue of Rolling Stone. As a high school senior, I was buying one or two albums per week, devouring each. By then I had Deja vu, There's A Riot Goin' On, Sweet Baby James, etc but no Beatles. I knew how Important the Beatles were to the critics and why, and I fully intended to Go There but had not decided where to start. So when my brother brought home a very worn copy of "Abbey Road" I went 'WHOA!!'. I don't think Mark ever put that on but I sure did! "Abbey Road" wasn't my gateway drug but it certainly was my first taste of the hard stuff! To say that I 'liked' it would be an understatement. I LOVED it. I respected it. It was the Future even as it was the End. (The last Beatles album.) (No one needs to Correct me on this- It was not the last one to be released, but it was the last one Created and that's my benchmark. ( sounds like something elmer fudd would say) sorry..ok reality check....on to my idea,,, if it has been done, thought about, tried and failed or just uninteresting please , your input is greatly welcomed.....*!! a map of the world with a pin for us all. i think it would be so interesting to see where we are on the planet....could it be called the 'worldwide map of jimdles online'? and if this is a new idea could it be the 'worldwide map of jimdles online, new idea'...... acronym;wwmojoni ??? am i going too far? not far enough? the concept of the world map pins came to me while shopping for my kids school supplies, in that section of the store was a map displayed, i thought of people i know and where they were, where i was born, places i've been, familiar places everyones heard of, where i might one day want to adventure, i guess just spinning a dream there in front of that map i realized what a recluse i am, but i'm a happy recluse, slightly twisted...in a good way...the joni factor?? needless to say i bought the map. it's still in the tube, it unfurls to three feet high by five feet long and i remember that where i live is in the center of the world (or just slightly left).....and BTW while looking for my old boots i came across an atlas from the 70's looking like it was a throwaway and it's well detailed as far as small towns, i found mine and thats pretty small so between that old atlas and that big world map i'm sure i can get close to any location, if anyone wants to play, i'm here... simply an email with your town or the nearest one if your way in the sticks i'll pin you up..... just a little about me briefly so you can do your visualization if you wish, i'm a woodworker, age 46, live on kauai, my wife is an artist, we've two kids, aimee is 16 going on 30, cory is 13 going somewhere, we're not quite sure where yet, but he's been playing my guitars for the past few years and he's happy....main thing. my dogs name is 'bug', i call all of our cats 'pooch' (in retrospect i could have named them all 'eat') my computer literacy i would grade as 'c minor' ..... i'm told i can count and spell good, but i still have difficulty speaking to people with whom i'm not familiar. i am the silent one hiding in the corner at the art openings. i can play 'just like this train' in my sleep and beer drink most under the table..... very well, now i shall find the world tube and dedicate a section of a wall in my shop forever to be 'WWMOJONI' unless someone has a more fun/creative/meaningful name for the world, love and peace to all, dean french ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 21:58:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Gross Subject: Happy Thanksgiving I'd like to take this opportunity to send Thanksgiving greetings to Joni and all the Canadian members of the JMDL and their families. There is so much to be thankful for, especially for the love that we have found here, in this special place. And as for me personally, I am thankful beyond all belief for the love I have found with Mags. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. And G-d bless. That might have been due to the fact that the movie was so horrible. Everything was so predictable that I sort of zoned out. Except, of course, when "River" was played. :) Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 22:27:42 -0700 From: Andrew Baio Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #390 >I saw "Almost Famous" tonight, and I didn't notice that the date didn't >make sense in relation to Joni's album being in the sister's stack. Your first post really caught my eye. It was the summer of 1971 and I was missing my college boyfriend who lived on Oahu (Mokuleia) terribly. My best friend had also decided to go off to summer school at Univ. of Hawaii and I was wishing so hard I could have gone in her place. The first postcard she sent me said, way too casually, "Saw Joni Mitchell last night at this place called The Shell in Waikiki." Ah, life is so cruel sometimes when you are 18 and in love ;-) I like your world of Joni map idea. Maybe you can scan a photo of it and put it on the JMDL website at some point. We actually discussed the idea of a birthday card like this for Joni a few year back but ultimately thought it may be too "corporate" or impersonal for that purpose. Looking forward to hearing more from you and my favorite state ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 01:34:17 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: to be a pin on some map, my vicarious thrill (NJC) Hi Dean, Loved your post. Welcome to the List! I'm visualizing life on your Hawaiian outer island. I envy you the garden that you've found, and I think your map idea is a very cool one. I do love where I live though, just across the bay and North of San Francisco, California. In a little town called "Larkspur" in Marin County. It's just South of San Rafael, which stands a better chance of getting ink on your map. Place a pin for me there, please. Aloha! - -Julius NP: Joni's "That Song About the Midway," which I had convinced myself was about me, Carly Simon style. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 23:24:52 -0700 From: Scott Price Subject: Re: That Song About the Midway, a correction At 02:18 PM 10/8/00 -0400, Jim L'Hommedieu wrote: >> Brian Workman said, >> A piece of art, particularly by someone as instinctive as >> Joni means what it means to the perceiver. Not sure if Brian's was meant to be a blanket statement, but if so, I disagree. Joni often laces her songs with ambiguity and this is one reason her music appeals to a broad audience. It transcends pigeonholes and gives inspiration to men and women, young and old. The songs can be interpreted in several ways, with many individuals getting different affecting feelings after listening to her albums. However, some of her songs *are* about specific individuals, places, and experiences. For example, can there be any doubt that "Willie" is about Graham Nash? It's been documented that Joni *did* pay a visit to Furry Lewis, subject of "Furry Sings The Blues." Is there some hidden meaning to "Magdalene Laundries?" Isn't that song about a real place in Ireland and its history of atrocities? Sometimes we may not want to know that a particular song Joni wrote had a specific person or place or event at its roots, because we feel that we already know what it means to us, oftentimes profoundly. It's like a pact we form with the artist and we don't want it to be any other way. So be it. Go with it, enjoy the music, savor the moment. But if you read this list, if you peruse her interviews, if you hear her talk, then be prepared for some revelations. Joni knows that the core of her art is the audience's personal interpretations, and I believe she guards these mysteries not because she doesn't know, but rather because she wants to give the audience their own opportunities to discover what it means to them. Speaking of non-U.S. films: "Dancer in the Dark" a new one starring Bjork is getting a lot of press around here. It won a major award at the Cannes film festival, which surprises me, as this is Bjork's first film. The critics seem to be split on it, however. Anyway. Knowing as I do that Bjork and Joni are acquainted, and that they dueted at the Walden Woods benefit in L.A. last year, I just wonder whether the film's title was in any way inspired by Joni's "My Old Man" lyrics from _Blue_. The film was directed by European Lars von Trier, but I can't imagine the title's coincidence being lost on Bjork. Who knows? Anyone? - -Julius ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #536 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
