It was commercial time, so I had the sound muted and suddenly I saw a picture of Joni on the screen. I unmuted the sound and it was an advertisement for a show this Sunday night on Sky One at 9 p.m. (UK time) called something like Chars to the Stars. Playing on my stereo as I type this is the debut album from Teddy Thompson, son of Richard and Linda. It's, um, an "advance" copy, if you know what I mean. Anyway, on a couple of songs, Linda's voice can clearly be heard on BVs, sounding pretty good. For those who are not familiar with her, she was, in her prime, one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced, before she succumbed to a condition called hysterical dysphonia, meaning she simply couldn't sing - when she opened her mouth to sing, nothing came out. I heard a while ago that she is singing again, thanks to Rob Jordan, who sent me a recording Teddy did on the BBC, when Linda was in attendance. So it's true. As for Teddy, he takes more after Linda than Richard in his singing, which is undoubtedly a good thing! That's why only now do I return to the apparently exhausted thread... Here tis: The first Joni song I truly grooooved to, and the first I purchased was.... "This Flight Tonight" by Nazareth. This was way back, in London, in the early 70's when it came out and was a top 20 hit on the radio. I know this has to be a truly dark dark dark secret because Bob classifies this cover as "Dangerously Cheesy." But I liked the chugging rhythm guitar and the screaming tenor that says tacky "Arena Rock" all over it. I confess! I especially liked those distorted voices, as if coming through the cheap headphones provided by the airplane, & the way that he wailed: "Las Vegas Sands...!" And-- get this!-- not only did I like all of it, and played that cracked 45 repeatedly (it was one of the 5 I purchased while in London for some 3 years) I didn't even know that it was a Joni tune when I first heard it... Not until I read her name beneath the title. "Huh? Joni Mitchell??"-- I asked myself. That's right, Joni was only a distant blip on my musical radar screen, some hazy indeterminate "Blonde Folkie" over there, strumming her guitar. Please forgive me! - --grovelingly, Bruce PS Second Joni tune I bought, about 7 years later, "Hissing." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 08:33:57 -0400 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Fwd: songs songs & more songs >Susan wrote: Morning Morgantown (I can't play this song all the way through >without crying since I had the thought that Joni wrote it for >Kilauren. I think their "Circle Game" is definitive. 4) Aretha Franklin -- "The 70's" Rhino 5) Jeff Buckley "Live at Cafe Sine" This 4 song CD is great (Would love to hear his "Peoples Parties" Especially to Bob M.: I've been reading up on Jeff Buckley lately and found that apparently among his major vocal influences were Edith Piaf and Judy Garland which I found interesting. Also remember in a Joni interview in DownBeat where she said that Charles Mingus' favorite singer was Judy Garland, to which she expressed surprise, thinking his favorite singers would probably have been Bessie Smith or Billie. Anyway I thought I would look thru Judy Garlands section and perhaps pick up something (I think Live at Carnegie Hall is definitive, right?). So while in the Vocal "G" section, I happened to notice Kathie Lee Gifford(!) Or just "Kathie Lee" I think she prefers. Curiosity got me to see what kind of songs she actually sings. So the first CD I looked at was titled "Born for You" and the the first song read 1) Born for You/Circle Game -- 6:47. I was taken aback--is this *that* Circle Game? I thought I guess it must be -- if "Kathie Lee" was going to record one Joni song it would probably be that one -- it would be a stretch to imagine her singing Woodstock, say, or "Edith and the Kingpin". Also I don't know if she sings the entire song or kind of segueways (sp?) into it from this "Born for You" song. I was disinclined to spend $16 to find out. But thought I would let you know for you "flotsam and jetsam" covers project. Although surely you have some standards, right? This is probably because you hear only her singles, which are often wonderful IMO, but not as experimental as much of her album work. In fact, she has actually released some pretty experimental singles, but radio didn't take to them, so you probably haven't heard those either. My guess is that if you did you just might be intrigued. > Though she has a unique voice her music is mostly as Joni would say "Junk Food > for Juveniles". You'd be hard pressed to fit "Secret Garden," "'Til Death Do Us Part," "Love Song," her cover of Marvin's "I Want You," "Bedtime Stories," "Sanctuary," "Nobody's Perfect," "Paradise (Not for Me)," "Mer Girl," "Shanti (Ashtangi)," and "Candy Perfume Girl" fit any definition of junk food for juveniles. But you haven't heard them yet. Frankly, I think you're giving some of her best-known singles, like the moody and substantial "Live to Tell," short shrift here. But my main point is that Madonna is more than her top-40 hits, and if you're going to nobly judge her on her music, then judge her on all her music. :-) Responding to a post by I-don't-know-who, in addition to her lyrics Madonna writes many, even most, of her melodies, at least if you believe interviews with co-producers like Babyface and William Orbit. Listening to the remarkably consistent prominence and strength of countermelody in all of her recordings, throughout her career and with many different collaborators, bolsters that claim. I get the impression that her producers primarily help with the technical and many creative aspects of the production, but the songs themselves have a lot more to do with her than we realize. - --Michael, probably backing himself into a corner from which he will only get out of by providing tapes LOL NP: Madonna, _True Blue_ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 11:27:13 EDT From: SBardMusic@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2000 #526 five most recent purchases: it's like this-rickie lee jones (brilliant steely dan and beatles covers.) summer in the city-joe jackson (brilliant steely dan and beatles covers.) both sides now-joni mitchell (brilliant covers.) pearl jam european bootleg series (four in all on the first go, lots of fun.) pete townshend's lifehouse chronicles (his magnum opus finally brought fully to life.) thanks. stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 06:02:32 -0700 From: Louis Lynch Subject: Yoko's letter to the parole board (NJC) Thank you so much for posting the complete letter from Yoko Ono! I found a book at the flea market called "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Colin Escott and Martin Hawkins published by St. Martin's Press. It's the most thorough, comprehensive study of Sam Phillips and Sun Records I've ever run across. Having been raised in Memphis just a few miles from Graceland I'm something of a Memphis music maniac. Anyway, on page 106 is the following reminiscence from Johnny Cash regarding touring in support of what might arguably be his worst single recorded at Sun, a treacly ballad called "Ballad of a Teenage Queen": "Dan Bass, the promo man from Quality Records [the Sun licensee in Canada] set up a Teenage Queen contest in every city. I flew into a new city each morning and did radio and television interviews. Then in the afternoon I signed records at record shops. My last promo appearance of the day, before the arrival of the Teenage Queen contestants, was to draw a name out of a box at a large department store's record counter and name the Teenage Queen and the runner up. One requirement to enter the contest was to prove the purchase of the record. I autographed hundreds and sometimes thousands of copies of that record in every city. During my concert that evening I crowned the queen and announced the first runner up. In the city of Saskatoon, the Teenage Queen died tragically, leaving the runner up to be enthroned. That runner up was already writing songs and singing. Her name was Joni Mitchell." As she matured, I found her less interesting, particularly as she ingratiated herself with the VH1 crowd (of which I would probably be a member). I haven't liked anything in the last decade; even 'Ray O' Lite' which I thought a crass appropriation of 'Techno' content. - -jan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 16:41:20 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Kathie Lee's Circle Game <> Surely you jest, Jeff! He's a West coast based guitarist who's played with everyone from Joni, {as part of Tom Scott and the LA Express, see Miles of Aisles, Court and Spark}, to Miles Davis. A founding member of the jazz fusion group YellowJackets, Robben Ford is a fantastic player, who's equally versed in jazz and blues. Sorta like Stevie Ray with a pedigree. Although I see them very much on a par spiritually, philosophically, intellectually, emotionally and I love and admire all his music deeply . . . technically and with regard to innovation, wide -open creativity, discovery and profound musical and poetic expression (even only considering her work up to the point Lennon's ended) - he can't touch her. From my point of view, no one does. She isexclusively superior and truly incomparable in my view. >> Well, I'm sure you're more familiar with Joni's innovation's than John's. As an example, he was the first to record feedback as part of a song. His primal screams on "Mother" may not be especially pleasing to the ear but it certainly broke new ground. I think his "Working Class Hero" stands with ANYTHING Joni has written in terms of meaningful poetic expression. I could go on, but I suspect you've already made up your mind. Furthermore, when you consider the songs he wrote for Double Fantasy, which to me are better than possibly everything Joni has done since, who's to say that what he might have written in the past 20 years since he was murdered could not be better than that. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, because I don't think it's really a close call in my book. Beware of the fact that some people sell goods that aren't, in fact, "as advertised." If you're using plastic to pay, then it's probably best to use a credit card, _not_ the VISA debit card for your personal bank account. In the UK (not sure about Republic of Ireland) the Consumer Credit Act protects you from being ripped off by unscrupulous vendors. Basically, if you get ripped off, you set the credit card company onto them, and you don't get hit for the amount. The same is NOT true of your DEBIT card. If anyone's really interested in this stuff, I'll get a friend of mine to write a short piece about his issue based on his extensive experiences (including involving the FBI). Caveat Emptor.
