Jason. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 20:59:48 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Yoko's letter to parole board (NJC) The following is Yoko Ono's letter to Mark David Chapman's parole board at Attica. (His parole was denied, but he can reapply in October of 2002.): Dear Sir: This is my reply to the petition of parole made by Mark David Chapman from here on called "the subject." It is not easy for me to write this letter to you since it is still painful for me to think of what happened that night and verbalize my thoughts logically. Forgive me if I fall short of your expectation of giving you a satisfactory opinion. But these are my sincere thoughts. My husband John Lennon was a very special man. A man of humble origin, he brought light and hope to the whole world with his words and music. He tried to be a good power for the world; and he was. He gave encouragement, inspiration and dreams to people regardless of race, creed and gender. For me, he was the other half of the sky. We were in love with each other like the most vehement of lovers to the last moment. For our son Sean he was the world. That world shattered when "the subject" pulled the trigger. For Julian, it was losing his father twice. For the people of the world, it was as though the light went out for a moment and darkness prevailed. With his one act of violence in those few seconds, "the subject" managed to change my whole life, devastate his sons, and bring sorrow and fear to the world. At first, I had refused to acknowledge John's death. I announced that "There is no funeral for John." But then, I started to hear that young girls were jumping off buildings to kill themselves. I realized then it was not a time for me to wallow in my own pain. I organized a world vigil with the prayer that, together, we would somehow get through. For the past twenty years, I've carried the torch John and I carried together to try to let the darkness go. When people asked how I felt about the killer of my husband, I have always told them that I don't think about that day any more. I wanted to look to the future, and not to remember that horrible moment. But the memory of that night has never left me for twenty years. It was so cruel. So unjust. My husband did not deserve this. He was in no way ready to die. He was feeling good with the prospect of doing a concert tour after making the album which became his last. He would have gladly changed his position with "the subject", and live the life of protection that "the subject" enjoys. His family and the world rested because justice was finally done by the court. "The subject" was imprisoned. It would also give a "go" signal to the others who would like to follow in the footsteps of "the subject" to receive world attention. Myself and John's two sons would not feel safe for the rest of our lives. People in positions of high visibility and outspokenness, such as John, would feel unsafe. Finally, it will not be safe for "the subject" himself. He will cease to have the security that the State provides him now. I understand he has been isolated from other prisoners because of the threat to him. Well, there are more people in the outside world strongly distressed about what he has done. They would feel it is unfair that "the subject" is rewarded with a normal life while John lost his. Violence begets violence. If it is at all possible, I would like us to not create a situation which may bring further tragedy to the world. I thank you in advance for your wise and just decision. I am sincerely yours, Yoko Ono Lennon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 02:51:49 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: Madge's "Music" NJC > > > > What would be the point? > > That people who work hard for their money not waste it > on noisy, producer-indulgent recordings such as this. //But what I was getting at was > that fans of > electronica and fans of Madonna alike, wouldn't find > this particular recording attractive. You may not agree, but you can NOT > fight the standard. This, at least, is my > understanding. Your understanding is incorrect. It would take far too long to explain it here.(but it seems I am going to try anyway! I cannot tell you are wrong and not at least attempt to explain why!) INTERPRETATION is the key word. If it was as you suggest, there would be no need to compete because the same dogs would win all the time. Also, it is the breed clubs/councils who decide the standard, I think even in the USA. Standards are changed, often with a lot of hoo ha about it too! If you go to any dog show you will see winners and Champions who differe from what the standard demands. In my breed for instance we have champions who do even look like the breed under the hair! You will see champions with bulging eyes, short noses and very soft coats.(these came from the USA btw). Not just in my breed. You will see this in many, if not all, breeds. Far too many people are hoodwikend by flash and pzazz and forget about substance and the standard. Winning at shows is often, tho not always about who you know. In the States the deciing factor is usually money-meaning that it has got to the point that only those with real money can campaign to the top. This means that quality is not the deciding factor. A top dog must have FIRST an owner who can afford to show all week and fly all over the USA. This means that an outstanding specimen is ignored and never seen or heard of if the breeder/owner does not have huge sums at their disposal. Apart from all that, we all differ in our interpretation of the standard but can still stay within it. But as stated above their are those who 'prefer' something that isn't in the standard or is cntrary to it-like round full eyes, instead of medium sized almond shaped ones. Or a soft coat instead of the hard one called for(because soft coats grow more quickly). This is actually harmful to the dog. It couldn't cope with soft coat in its natural environemtn(the Himalayas). Even worse, in order to protect it and get a floor sweeping coat, the poor dog is kept confined in a wire bottomed crate and not excercised!!! For many of us it is not about winning prizes either but preservation. At least in my breed which is ancient and developed naturally. In short, your understanding of how it works is incorrect and it is quite possible for the same dog to be loved and loathed by the experts. Also judges are human and fallible. You only have to read show reports to see that interpreation is the key and mistakes are made. A winning dog described as having a lovely broad head whent he head should be narrow, another praised for having a square jaw when the standard specifically says a square jaw is objectionable. One week a judge says they witheld the CC on a dog because it had poor shoulders and the next the same dog is praised for having good shoulders! So you see the standard is not as cut and dried as you thought. Even in sticking to it, the same dogs will not win because no two people will interept the same way. Two dogs may fit the standard well but one will lose under one judge and the other will win and visa versa. Example;both dogs fit the standard but they differ in that one dog is very masculine and the other isn't(talking about males). The masculine one will win under Judge A who likes a dog to look like a dog. Judge B will chuck the masculine dog and place the 'feminine' dog because that is what they like. Sometimes you get a dog/bitch that everyone loves. That happened in my breed in82 and she won everything becoming Top Dog all breeds and gained a record nu,mber of tickets from Breed specialists. In 98 a male dog did the dsame thing but most of his wins came from non breed specialists and the breed was split about this dog. Some loved him and others loathed him.(aesthetically speaking). Hope that goes someway to explaining your misunderstanding. bw colin > > > As I said in my original post, I'm still a *big* > Madonna fan! :-) > > Don Rowe > > ===== > My debut CD "Closer Now" is now available at http://www.mp3.com/donrowe > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Yahoo!
