I picked them both up. I am a huge fan of "Ray pf Light"-- it was by far MAdonna's masterpiece. William Orbit did wonders on that album. But this new Madonna CD is a *HUGE* disappointment. I agree-- crap straight through. I can't figure out how an artist can go from such a brilliantly crafted work like Ray of Light to a boring, uneven effort like "Music". Hi to all, Another first-timer here. I've been lurking around here now for several months and enjoying all the chats and posts from you all. I've envied you all through the highs of the tour, the exhibition at the Mendel and your various gatherings together. I thought it was about time to say hello. I've been listening to Joni since the mid-seventies (first purchase - Court & Spark) and have stayed with her ever since. Like most of you, I find she has "documented" a lot of my life (good AND bad) over the years..... I'm renowned amongst my friends for chucking a "Joni pearl" into the midst of many a conversation about life and loves!! But heck! I'm feeling less than eloquent this evening, and anyway, what can I tell you folk that you haven't heard already? As I have read the various "newbie" postings over the months I have recognised that we all share a love of the music and artistry very deeply and in similar ways..... So I won't repeat more of the same! However... By way of gifts on my first outing, I bring cheesy things to the feasting table! If you haven't discovered it already, take a look at www.yourmobile.com which is a very comprehensive mobile ringtone download site. Register "For Free" (grin) and you too can have "California", "Carey", "Circle Game", "Free Man In Paris", and even "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" whistling out from your 'phone. Visit the "Newest" ringtone section and you'll find them all listed, click a button and it arrives through the ether direct to your mobile..... Listen... Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 20:28:48 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Last 5 albums bought (NJC) Quite a rum selection for me. I only have a couple dozen classical recordings, but I added to them with: Brahms - the Complete Symphonies (for only 6 quid!) Beethoven - Piano Sonatas, Vol 9 (no, I don't have the first 8) The best of Ivan Rebroff - has anyone heard this indisputably unique singer? He has (or had - I'm not sure he's still alive, he'd be about 70) a mind-boggling range, from the deepest, richest basso profundo through to a pure, sweet falsetto, reaching high notes some female singers might struggle to hit. He sang a lot of traditional Russian songs, operatic arias, show tunes, even a not-terribly-good pop tune called Perestroika - AND he sang in at least 6 languages! Then there was that duplicate copy of Pooka's "Spinning" album (and no, this isn't a bogus attempt to shoehorn yet ANOTHER mention of this album into my despatches to the list!!), for which I have found a good home. In fact I'll send the next copy to one of you folks on the other side of the water, so you can spread the word over there! And finally there's Lauren Hoffman's 1st album, Megiddo, which I've listened to once and sounds good, though I'd be surprised if I decide it's as good as From The Blue House. Oh, and let me kill two thread birds with one stone by declaring that I'm a Gemini (anyone else born on the 4th June?) On a personal note, I'm writing as a free man - Thursday 28th was my last day working for a city law firm, after 12 years. I'm now a free agent (unemployed), considering my options (wondering what the f*ck I'm going to do to pay my mortgage) and staying calm (yes Mr Ali Khan, just breathe into the paper bag then breathe in, repeat as necessary). So I'm doubly sad - it's the end of an era. joining in to share my thoughts.... I have been speaking about Pierre at great length these days...with Brian who is visiting me this week, as well as with my daughter Miranda, in order that I may share this very special man with the two people I love the most in the whole world. Trudeau's death weighs heavily on my heart as he was clearly a unique and special man. As Catherine says...Pierre may have been hated by many. That said...he was also admired, respected, loved and cherished. Pierre gave us what we needed most..by his very being, he exemplified class, sophistication and an undying love for this wonderful country of ours. He made us proud to be Canadian. He had style, grace and an intelligent sense of humour. I dare say he was the only leader we ever had. One of the many reasons I love Trudeau is that he didn't give a damn what the polls said..if he thought it was good for the nation, he went ahead with policy...he was quite a rebel. When all is said and done, the most wonderful thing about Pierre is that he loved his family and especially his children immensely and unconditionally. It is my feeling that Pierre's spirit was unrepairably wounded when his beloved son Michel died tragically two years ago, consequently his health went downhill very rapidly. I join Catherine in saying that I will miss Pierre terribly.. thank you for your touching post Catherine...and thanks also to Jim for your gracious and tender words of respect for Canada. That is all that really matters in this life. Love. Unconditional love. Treacy" Subject: Madge's "Music" NJC OK, OK I'm not going to attempt to sway y'all into thinking that Madge's new "Music" is any sort of masterpiece, or even a worthy followup to "Ray Of Light"...there is no 'following-up' to a record like that. However, I do believe the new disc 'rides with wear' as they might say on "Are You Being Served?". The disc IS full of annoying blips and whatnot (heavily accessorized), but it has a certain, more deeply hidden funky quality that sets in after, lets say, spin # 5. Soon, one discovers that some of the blips DO serve a purpose beyond ornamentation; the disc becomes more rhythmically interesting. Might I suggest altering the disc into an E.P., containing only tracks 1,5,7,8 and 10. Just a suggestion! If I can turn a bum purchase aroung for just 1 or 2 of you, that makes it all worthwhile. ;~D Chris. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! And 20/20 claimed to have THE answer to what they called the mystery. And claimed to have the first interview with him since he left the music business. Guess you can't believe those promos. According to this show, he was ill with tuberculosis when he was 19, but in the interview he said it was when he almost drowned in the ocean that he promised to work for God if he survived. And soon after that his brother gave him a copy of the Koran and all Cat's questions were answered, and have been answered for the last 20 years. Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 20:19:42 -0500 From: "Eric Wilcox" Subject: RE: 5 recent purchasesNJC That's a very interesting thought. Its truly made me think a bit. This theory makes a lot of sense-- place Madonna as the vocalist accenting a progressive trance dance track by William Orbit. What you're really listening to is William Orbit's production. Now, I know Madonna and William Orbit worked together on "Ray of Light"-- but how much was really Madonna besides the words? The one track that I think puts a hole in this theory is "Mer Girl"-- which is a brilliant song that seems to be dominated by Madonna's contribution-- the words. The musical aspect is very minimal. If she could do this on Ray of Light-- why not on Music? The answer may that Mirwais Ahmadzai produced the majority of the new album. And having heard some of his music prior to the release of "Music"-- I notice that he seems to favor sampling and turning pre-existing work into new creations. This would require Madonna to give something to Mirwais to work with. Whereas with William Orbit, Madonna was probably being told what they needed-- a collaboration that centered around the fact that William Orbit produces new and original music primarily alone. So we see Madonna as a vocalist. A very talented vocalist-- but at heart, just a vocalist and not the sort of morphing genius artist that the media portrays her as. What really kills "Music" is that fact that its not only Mirwais that produces-- there are also some tracks produced by Orbit-- which only serves to meddle, creating a sound that is patchy from track to track. eric - --- eric wilcox edwilcox@students.wisc.edu "It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. This from the liner notes of his CD, "Gypsy Jazz": "As a guitarist growing up in America in the late '60s and '70s you'd expect Green to worship at the feet of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page or John McLaughlin. Far from it. Tony's idol is of all people the Belgian gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt". You can add Steve and myself to the list of people who idolize the guitar artistry of Django Reinhardt. On the way to lunch and then the airport with Michael Paz, we made a quick stop at Tower Records and I picked up Tony's CD. The first paragraph of the liner notes reads: "It's not uncommon for creative people to have more than one outlet for their muse. Musicians as diverse as Felix Mendelssohn, George Gershwin, Tony Bennett and Joni Mitchell could all paint for instance." Gypsy Jazz by Tony Green, highly recommended." Hi Leslie- Tony is indeed a wonderful artist twice. His visual art is growing (much like Joni's) more each year. He is the toast of New Orleans and in Europe (as I understand). He has been on jukebox a couple of times but has not had good performances because I whink our format was a little too rushed for him. Being a live show we are always crazy and rushing around re micing things etc. He is always all acoustic usually 2 gtrs and upright bass, and it has been hard to get things just right for him. i love his stuff and have been friends with him since we were both in college at USL in Lafayette when I had a bush (as a opposed to a ponytail) and he had hair down to the middle of his back and was playing all the latest riffs by Page, Hendrix, et al. I wish I would have asked him to do something for Jonifest, but alas the show as 6 hours long already and there still wasn't enough time. Thanks for supporting New Orleans music. From the insipid lyrics to the gimmicky waa-waa-waa-waa-waa trippy effect, the song is pure crap. But somehow, in my dotage, it comforts me . . . How about the rest of you? As for Madonna's "Music," I've only heard the title track and I love it. But I like it for what it is -- dance music, which is a category that I think most people bring different kinds of expectations to. And even people who *hate* dance music can eventually encounter a dance song that gets under their skin and produces a powerful need to listen to the song very loudly about a thousand times in a row. My favorite Janis story is from one of her last concerts -- the only time I ever saw her in person -- at the Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Massachusetts the summer before she died. Midway through the concert, between songs, a group of guys started yelling, "Janis, we wanna ball you!" I know people these days talk like that to the elderly at the local supermarket, but even in Cambridge, in 1970, it was a pretty outrageous thing to be shouting in public. But Janis played right into their hands. She kept cupping her hand to her ear, feigning an inability to hear the guys, which caused even more people to join in. Well, finally the entire stadium took up the chant and everybody was screaming, "JANIS! WE WANNA BALL YOU!" Still pretending to be unable to understand what everyone was shouting, Janis eventually quieted the crowd and simply said, "One at a time, one at a time..." Janis was incredible. It's very sad to be commemorating the 30th anniversary of her death when she never even came close to her 30th birthday. --Bob NP: Goddamn the Pusher Man ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Oct 2000 23:43:35 EDT From: "Blair Fraipont" Subject: RE: 5 most recent purchases 1. Taking advantage of the mid-price blitz. 1) Jim Chappell - Saturday Rhapsody Beautiful piano melodies that beg to be played during twilight or at least early mornings. "A Weekend to Remember" is so beautiful with a lingering sadness. Mood music during quiet hours. 2) Eddie Daniels - Nepenthe I can't seem to get enough of the sound of a clarinet and although this album may not be a creative statement as, say, "Maiden Voyage" or "Kind of Blue", it seems to grow on you upon repeated listening. I like his reworking of Coltrane's "Equinox". 3) Frank Sinatra - Duets I am not really a fan of Sinatra but I purchased this one because of the vocalists featured in the album. And what great versions! From Carly Simon's plaintive "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" to Charles Aznavour's savoir faire to Tony Bennett's infectious swing. And then there's Aretha's "What Now My Love" and Luther Vandross' "The Lady is a Tramp". If only for the artists featured, this album is a must have (that is if you all don't have it). Frank sounded alone and abandoned in his duet with Kenny G's soprano sax in "One For The Road". ...and a new discovery... 4) Steve Tyrell - A New Standard A vocalist with a gravelly voice whose spare singing made me focus on the songs for the first time and not on the vocal acrobatics. If you want to listen to the story inherent in the song, this singer is for you. He was praised in the liner notes by Burt Bacharach and Woody Allen.
