Oh CC, never with a new Joni vinyl for me, but after years of enough continuous play to set a world record, they all developed permanent hiccups. That's why I now have 3 of each, including the original ones with more craters than the moon (too sentimental to part with them) ;-) I loved your post - definitely took me back to my first (used) record player that had 33 1/3 speed. It was such an antique it was a hazard and I occasionally got mild electric shocks from the tone arm. My parents finally took pity on me and gave me a "real" compact stereo player one birthday. It followed me to college and then later was handed down to two different friends. It still is going strong after all these years. I shoulda kept it! So, thanks, Relayer, for taking the time to share all the detail with us. It reminded me of when I was singing in the Millbrook Baptist Church choir in Raleigh, NC. Our youth pastor/music minister was VERY unintimidated by ANY situation. He called the White House to schedule a performance for the President (Nixon at the time), and they actually said Yes, we could go and sing for the President, and when he told us, we were all SO excited, like we'd won a sweepstakes or something. So we went, and sang, but alas, Nixon had an emergency and was at Camp David, so we sang for Jesse Helms instead, who was (and still is) a Senator for NC. We were also thrilled to do that! Looking back at it now, as a cynical wiseass practically apolitical adult I am no longer enamored with Nixon or Helms, but at the time as a youth I was looking through different eyes, and it WAS indeed a very exciting experience for me! And of course, had Nixon been there, the show would probably have been taped! ;~D Relayer's trip reminded me of my own. Relayer is a very kind and genuine person, and I don't know anything about Relayer other than that. I assume Relayer is a young person. I know what you're thinking...Bob, you didn't put NJC in the subject line, so where's the JC already? I thought about Relayer's post, and the replies to Relayer's post all day yesterday, because of my own experiences, and it led me to "The Circle Game" and thinking about the mystical magical world as seen through the eyes of a youth, catching dragonflies in jars, and tearful at the falling of a star, and such, and then becoming an adult and seeing the dreams of youth losing grandeur coming true, and it reminded me once again what a brilliant, unimaginably good writer Joni is so as to be a touchstone for whatever happens to be on my mind! Relish, as you'll recall, was on the Mercury label, and was Grammy-nominated and went platinum and all that stuff. Mercury, in their supreme idiocy, dropped her from the label because she wasn't "Britney-like" or something. Anyway, she'd been shopping this one around for awhile, and finally Interscope picked it up. It's very Sheryl Crow/Bonnie Raitt sounding, with some fascinating Eastern melodic parts in there. Great songs throughout, a super cover of "Love Is Alive", solid playong and Joan is in FINE voice, very strong vocally and hits some notes that leave you saying "WOW!". I was very pleased to read a couple of high-profile high-power reviews this week, so maybe she'll have a hit with this one, and the label will support her instead of another "Mercury Poisoning" (a song Graham Parker wrote about the raw treatment HE got from Mercury)... Hopefully she'll tour to support it, and come passing through this way. Patriotism is defined in my dictionary as a "love or loyal or zealous support of one's country." There is a kind of reactive, kneejerk "patriotism" that should make one feel uncomfortable - the kind that is tied to narrow or tunnel vision, that cannot transcend politics or has lost sight of the real goals or ideals in its rush to beat the drum for its own particular political agenda or affiliation, that is inflexible and insistent that one particular way is the only way, that is sometimes condescending or patronizing to other nations or people (inside or outside its own country) who are perceived as "lesser" or "different." This kind of "patriotism" exists in many countries, not only the U.S. However, there is also a kind of "positive" patriotism that stems from higher manifestations of "love and loyalty" while tempering the "zealousness." It is not corny or blind at all and actually IMO helps makes the whole world go round. You can turn on the TV right now and see "Exhibit A" - The Olympics. >i can only try to imagine one of those (wonderful) American >people with whom i was acquainted this summer gatting the >chance to share in Relayers experience and i know how >amazing it would have been for them, and even i >can revel in *their* joy and *their* positivity. I think most people have this reaction when it somes right down to it. One doesn't have to be an American to appreciate Relayer's experience. One doesn't have to be anything, for that matter, to experience awe or joy at meeting someone who is a notable person or part of history. A few years ago while on business in another state I was out shopping and happened to come upon a big reception for the Princess of Wales - Fergie, who was attending a reception in a fancy toy store in connection with a childrens charity. She got out of the limo and immediately started greeting and shaking hands with the "regular" people, including myself. Whatever I'd heard or read about her instantly became completely irrelevant and I felt like a little happy 6 year old to meet her. (Same thing happened the first time I met Joni except maybe I felt more like a 12 year old ;-) Feeling this kind of childlike awe and excitement is never a bad thing and should certainly not be ridiculed. Life is very short and we should all pack as much wonder as possible into it while we can. Last month I received my notice from the Secretary of State saying I needed to renew my tabs on my auto license plate and I procrastinated dreadfully. Dragging my feet until the last minute possible I pulled into their office yesterday, got in line and saw the personalized plates ad on the wall as I waited my turn. My mind was wandering as I daydreamed about the possibilities. My number was called and as I handed over the paperwork to the clerk I casually asked how much it would be to change to a personalized plate and she answered $30.00 if the plate I wanted was available. My heart began to race as I spelled out the one I wanted, she looked it up in her computer and lo and behold.... it was mine for the low cost of $30 in addition to my renewal fee... decisions decisions... a heartbeat passed and I said "Do it!" I am now the proud owner of a new personalized license plate on my auto: SIQUOMB Does anyone else have a Joni-plate on their vehicle? If so what? If not, what would you choose? I thought Brady Blade was out with her (Brian's drummer brother), but when you said the drummer and bass player are brothers it threw me. Have a great weekend! Relayer, thanks so much for your post about the visit to The White House. What a blessing for you and your family. While I DID laugh at your post, it was only in joy for you, and I fail to see the "side splitting humor" that was expressed. Perhaps that person should send in some original humor so that we might understand his brand of it. I got back from Rochester on Thursday and thank God they decided not to operate on my dad. We are going to wait until January and see if the tumor has grown any or if he feels any symptoms. The doctor believes (as I do) that surgery would only reduce his quality of life and he is not very strong right now. His heart HAS improved though by about 20% which was very encouraging news. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts, prayers, emails, and telephone calls to my cell phone. I find such amazing strength from this wonderful group of people and from some very wonderful individuals here as well. Love to you all. I was listening to the recording of Day IN The Garden this evening and it is such an amazing recording. Does anyone know the source of this recording and if so what format was used to record it??? I will be switching to a new puter tomorrow so I hope I am able to get everything transfer over easily so I can be back up online. Finally a REAL puter thats REAL FAST to go with the dsl connection. Yippie! And a 40 Meg hard drive for those large audio files. The rough mixes of recordings from Jonifest2000New Orleans will be finished soon and sent out to all participants for approval before I will be doing the final mixes and releasing this set. I am still hoping for a pre Christmas release. I would like to do this right and in a very nice way because it will be my chance to raise further awareness and funds for the Foundation. I have received the plans from the architects for the Burn Unit in Honduras and I am trying to have it scanned and put up on the site for people to view. Hope everyone is having a wild and wonderful weekend. I'd LOVE to get personalised plates, and I'd probably go for SIQUOMB as well (it's a different country, so it's OK), but we're not quite so fortunate with the price. Over here, it's over $300 to get them, plus the annual $200 registration fee. Maybe if I was rich?... I've done some taping of Kiwi music for people over the last few months, but I've moved houses, and got a new PC into the bargain, so I'm not sure if I've done all the taping I'm supposed to (all my old mail messages got lost in the transfer process). So if you were expecting something, and haven't got it, please let me know, and I'll get on to it ASAP! Also, I had some major problems at my last address with packages being stolen out of the letter-box. So if you've sent me a tape or anything else, and I haven't thanked you, this may be why! Many apologies to anyone in this category, and I can assure you that anything sent from now on should find it's way to me with no problems!
