The illustrations are really beautiful (the ebay photo doesn't do the book justice) and my boy (as a toddler) loved looking at them.......I even took a photo of him looking at the book with big eyes and smiles. The only down-side is that it's not Joni's illustrations but someone else's. "Both Sides Now" is meant to be a children's book. It simply contains the lyrics to the song, along with some illustrations. The words "glory" and "worship" here are not used accidentally. The Industry Vultures feast on the sight of an once-golden artist whose career is coming to a spectacular demise. A simple coffin-burial is not grisly or humiliating enough -- declining stars are subjected to the cruel taunts and drawn-out torture of those who love to watch the Golden Egg-layer bleeding to death publicly, slowly, fantastically. Of course every view is valid, Joni's lyrics are polyvalent and so forth, however I'm right. :) Nickel Chief ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 10:56:03 -0400 From: "Christopher J. The place has been major spiffed up and the Bill Graham traditions of the apple barrel at the door etc were maintained. Unlike before however they gave a way free full size posters at the door of the nights show. cool. In the old days I used to rip them off the walls. I had never seen Emmylou except in pictures and she always looks so beautiful and yet she has never been played up as a sex symbol (considering how good looking she is) so it remained part of her mystery for me. How does a truly beautiful woman avoid being exploited in todays media? I had however been listening to all her albums since I "discovered" her about two years ago. I love her material and her voice and the many players she has had with her (Albert Lee, James Burton Ricky Skaggs etc)so how I avoided getting into her music all these years is really a mystery. In any event here it was in the papers and so I popped or is it pooped Ticketmaster and I was in. Ticketmaster by the way has the art of fleecing down to a science. By the time I bought my $32 dollar ticket there were like 3 extra charges that nearly doubled the amount of the actual ticket but I digress. The Fillmore itself looked great but I felt like a person who grew up in a house as a small child and then went back 30-40 years later. Looking at how small, ridiculously small actually, the place is I kept wondering how on earth Pink Floyd and some of the other groups who played there actually played there without melting the attendees like a scene out of a science fiction movie. While The Fillmore used to look big to me it now looks so tiny. Inside its an ornate 1880s opera house with the framed "box seats" rimming the second level. High above are crystal chandeliers and the big mirror ball graces the center. The sound system was wonderful and I was about twenty feet dead center out from the stage. Emmylous crowd was mostly people over 30 and everyone was really friendly. Another weird thing that totally slipped my mind was that because my wife was working I went by myself. Im waiting in line and I notice everyone is looking at me wondering why this person is here alone. I guess no one goes to musical concerts alone do they? I never had so many gay men and straight women ask me frivolous questions. Like who cares what kinds of shorts Im wearing. Of course the huge sunflower sized "Bush for President" button I wear tends to keep strangers at bay in San Francisco. Im kidding. Anyway the first group on was actually EmmyLous backup band Spyboy backing up a female vocalist. She may have been kidding much of the time but this woman said any number of totally ditzy comments in the course of the evening . Her husband was the lead guitar player for the band more on him later. Buddy and Lorie Miller. I gave them about a five. The songs were decent but not compelling and her voice was a cut below great. More like "very good" but very limited range and odd tones at times when she tried to go off. Celia Bartoli she is not. Could have been voice fatigue or a cold except she didnt drink any water so its probably just her voice. To be honest it seemed to me that she was on the program so that when the star comes out you can see the difference. The bands sound improved once they got to Emmys set because they had already had a set to "warm up". Emmylou actually came out in the middle of her set and did a harmony part to a very difficult song. Starting cold it was a daunting task. Ill give the writer credit for very unique melody line but it was a tough song to sing. Emmylou fans who are familiar with her album Wrecking Ball know that she went from country acoustic sound to deep rich electric textures with her hooking up with Daniel Lanois. Well the songs on this tour are at least half her own creations and they all are done with the Lanois sound as an influence. They are just great. She had a fabulous drummer and bass player (two brothers) who laid down an incredible rich sound together. The bass player sounded like the space shuttle was taking off and at times you didnt "hear" the bass you "felt" the bass. The guitar player uses several Les Pauls Custom guitars with custom pickups and an effects control unit attached to the instrument itself. The sound that could be produced by this ensemble sounded huge and rich. Buddy Miller (the guitar player) looks and talks like he was born in a Bar B Q pit and has the Curt Cobain duds with a baseball cap that says Dust on it. When he sang lead parts as the opening act his voice sounded sharp and shrill, all attack, no aftertones. When he sang backup to Emmylou his voice sounded great and was the perfect compliment to hers because he was doing harmony parts. His playing was in the Keith Richards school which is lead riffs emanating from chords as opposed to strings of notes. Actually hes more of a rhythm player than a lead guitar player but his sound is perfect for her band and material. Lots of cool fills and trills and sliding chords with excellent timing and multiple textures of sound padding. He actually ripped off a few excellent leads on at least two songs and he definitely got better as the night went on. He also played Bazouki and Mandolin with all instruments amplified with pickups. I would rate him pretty high as a guitar player but even higher on the other instruments. The band overall was really extraordinary. the drummer has a way of putting alot of energy into playing slowly and uses the toms almost more than the snare so you get this low heavy texture to the bottom of the sound. Animated but not showy or overbearing. the bass player was introduced as being brand new like he just was given the song list today and if thats true then hes really good. Emmylou definitely had a voice problem and had an extra cup of hot tea delivered to the stage to essuage her cranky vocal chords. her voice still had that beautiful quality but whether its because of her somewhat advanced years or because of her cold she has a problem climbing into the attic of her range as easily as she used to. Sort of like Jonis "helium" voice now gone. Although Emmylou doesnt smoke so its probably for the other reasons. Having said that she did a great job throughout making adjustments in her range and octave and her problem didnt devalue the experience of listening to her at all. Her voice is still up there on another level. After she got good and warmed up she actually hit some amazing notes. Her duet with her guitar player on Love Hurts was just ethereal. She did a number of original tunes she has written and all of them were interesting and beautiful. No out and out rockers and all were similar in atmosphere to those songs on Wrecking ball. I dont know the titles of the songs and didnt have my pencil and paper to take notes so I cant give any titles out but trust me you will love her new album. Of her older material she did Poncho and Lefty, Orphan Girl, Goodbye, Dont Cry For Me, and a couple of other gram parsons songs (I think). I only had two complaints both minor. Emmylou struck with the KD Lang outfit. A weird looking skirt that resembled the house drapes coture. It was a dadaesque skirt and actually hindered her movements it appeared. Paired with the standard black country blouse the ensemble looked really strange. The second thing was on one particularly rock out number (title unknown) she really got down on the guitar and had this big smile and just went off the charts in charm and appeal. I wondered why she wasnt like that animated throughout the entire show because she has the potential to be a very special performer. This attitude probably comes from her being a back up singer early on so shes devoid of the me first look at me syndrome. My final comment on her is she is a really good acoustic guitar player. Her picking was flawless and interesting. Her timing is really good and her hesitations and augmentations were unique and intriguing. She plays a whole bunch of Gibsons (yech-must be that old endorsement calling) and Martins (what an incredible sound). By the way she had them all tuned to different tunings and she has an amazing roadie who had every one tuned perfectly and was johnny on the spot the entire night fixing anything that wasnt perfect in an instant. Goes to show that IF Joni wanted to play acoustic guitar in multiple tunings she certainly could so that answers that question for the list. Emmylou's guitar was mixed right up there with all the other instruments so the details of the acoustic strumming and picking was right there with all the electric guitaristics of the band. In other words shes a confident experienced player who holds her own. Im really glad I finally saw her, it was worth the trouble. Not a show for the ages but song for song one of the better shows Ive been to in a while. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 11:18:59 -0700 From: Scott Price Subject: Re: EmmyLou Harris concert (njc) Marcel, Thanks for posting your review of Emmylou at the Fillmore...she is a truly beautiful artist. This is much late, but I wanted to offer a big thanks to all at the recent JoniFest in New England. Ashara, especially, thanks for your hospitality, but also thanks to everyone else whose energies made this a special experience. A very memorable "Joni" vacation. I am always surprised at what an upbeat, generally extroverted and well-rounded group of people JMDLers seem to be -- it defies what I would have thought of as the JM stereotype and my friends are surprised when I describe it to them, especially as their main point of reference is a rather dour, intense introvert! I always enjoy listening to other musicians play Joni's music--there's really nothing I'd rather do and I certainly intend to do a set next year. (Paz--thanks for the encouragement). But I may need to enlist some singers, or find a good vocal coach soon! Wally K, if you are reading, put me down as a Gemini. This will help augment your theory of Geminis being one of the predominants of the JM fan database--must be the duality and both sides now thing. Plus I was born on June 21 (lets not get into years;-) so am on the cusp of cancer. I think this may be a reason I am so Joni infatuated--besides the restless, self-questioning persona she embodies, I can identify with all the duality in her lyrics to the core. This can be a great quality if you're an artist, but is not always an asset in the modern corporate mileau! With the discussion of CD trading, I must admit that 1 time I got a CD on ebay and even though I did not pay very much for it, and the trader really could not have profited much from it, I did not feel good about it and would not do it again. I really just felt too shy to ask anyone to make me something and felt embarrased about getting it for free--like I really *wanted* to pay for it. I mean I spend $15 often on CD's I don't even particularly like. And anything from Joni I know I'm going to love. May I make a possible suggestion that if someone makes a CD for someone and the receiver *wants* to, that they can make a contribution to the JMDL page in lieu of having the CD burner make a profit off it. I introduce this as just an idea--I'm not sure if this would be considered "profiting" off of bootleg material or not. If the JMDL page is in good financial shape, then maybe we could contribute to another possible charity, like getting Joni's pool heated. [Just kidding--some months ago in a photo special of RS they printed the "pool" pictures from mid 70's, Hissing period. She reflected "yes the photos were taken in my own pool, but I haven't used it in a long time--it's expensive to heat.] Well, regardless, the fact that people are willing to share the treasures of Joni material is very cool and generous--the Second Frets material in particular is among my favorites--very, very special. We got shown to our living quaters, which were on the third floor.I shared a suite with my my mom and sister and had my own small room.(which was fine with me.I would have slept in the bathroom,if necessary.)The Salarioum is also on the third floor.then we went outside to the front lawn of the W.H. to look around and take pics.my sister and me,and my mom's boyfriend went on the swing in back of the oval office, while the president had his back to the window, finshing a meating in the oval office.then Hillary pulled up in her limoseen and briefly greeted us.then we had a tour of the White House. We saw so many beautiful rooms. The Lincoln Bedroom,The Queens Bedroom, the green room, blue room, red room, the presidents office, the family dining room,we saw the outside of the presidents and Hillary's living quaters, and also the outside of Chelsea's living quaters, there are so many rooms with pictures and paintings as well as artifacts of the presidents and first ladies.there are alot of pictures of the president,Hillary,Chelsea,Clinton's mom,Barbra Streisand ect...all over the house. After the tour we went to dinner.we were coming down the elevator from the 3rd floor to the first floor.when the door opened, the president was standing there when the door opened, waiting to get on.that was a bit of a surprise! That's how we first met him.we alll shook his hand and said hello.then we had a buffet dinner in the state dining room, with about 100 other people.Bill clinton, and Hillary walked aroung talking to everyone.after dinner about 50 of us watched a movie, and had popcorn in the W.H. movie theatre.before the movie,my mom and me bumped into the president and shook hands with him again.the president and Hillary made short speaches before the movie started. The movie was ok.It was the new movie about the first black swimmer in the navy.It was with Cyba Gooding Jr,and Robert Dinero,I don't remember the name of it.something like "man of honor".the guy who the movie was about was there,as well as the director and writer of the movie, and the lead actress.they were thrilled to be there,of cource, having a screening for the president in the W.H.next we went to the Salarioum on the third floor with the 15 or so guessed who were sleeping over. One of the guests slept in the Lincoln bedrrom. The other guests were very nice.we were invited by Hillary.I think they were invited by Bill.In the Salarioum, the President joined us,and we spent about 2 hours, from about 12:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M. listening to the president talk.he was extremly talkative,as well as very tired.he talked mainly about the who the best vice presidents were, which is obviously a subject on his mind now,as well as oil,Milosivich,Saddam Hussein, the olmpics ect...he didn't talk to us much, but a little bit.He talked about Head Start where my sister works and how he loved northern California, where my sister lives. At about 2:00 A.M.,he said he was going to bed,and I went to take a shower.my sister came to tell me that I missed taking pictures with Bill Clinton and everyone!!! I assumed he was going right to bed,he was so tired, but my sister said he was so nice,he still took pics with everyone.my mom told me to wake up early and have breakfast in the salarioum where Bill Clinton said he'd be.I went to breakfast later in the morning, but the president didn't show up.I had breakfast with the other oovernight guests who all talked about what a disaster it would be if that ignorant fool,George W Bush wins in November.then we went downstaris to watch the president take off in his helicopter to go to Andrews Airforce base to take a plane to california. He was delayed in leaving, and before he left,my mom managed to take a picture of him with me,which thrilled all of us.Then we watched him give a small press conferance outside about oil before taking off in the helicopter.then we went inside to wait for Hillary.then I said goodbye to my sister who had to catch a plane for California as well.we waited for Hillary for about an hour.she was running late, but eventually she came to take a pic with us and talk to us for about 10 minutes.I told her where I worked.I thought she was very warm and sweet.my mom and her boyfriend gave her presents as they gave the president earlier.then she took off for New York, and we went on a tour of the west wing.we saw the oval office,in which my mom took pics of us and herself sitting at the president's desk! Then we saw the cabinet room, the press conferance room, and other rooms.then we left.I took a few pieces of White House stationary from my room,a cloth paper towl from the bathroom,(with the sign of the president on it)and a few books about the W.H.,which we were told it was ok to take. I will never forget this event for as long as I live... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 20:59:01 EDT From: Relayer211@aol.com Subject: Joni's stockings how many stocking referances are there in Joni's songs?there's "All I want",where Joni wants to reck her stockings in Jukebox dive and "help me" where she has a hole in her stocking.are there any others? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 18:21:38 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: EmmyLou Harris concert (njc) > > Thanks for posting your review of Emmylou at the Fillmore...she is a truly > beautiful artist. > > The opening act was Buddy and *Julie* Miller, a husband and wife team, who > have collaborated with Emmylou for a number of years. Just one more comment about Julie Miller. She & Buddy did a set before Emmylou's show here in Seattle a few years ago. They didn't perform with the band, however, it was just Buddy with an acoustic guitar. She has an unusual voice, a voice suited to a country or Appalachian folk style if I remember right. Julie wrote the song 'All My Tears' from the 'Wrecking Ball' album, a very pretty hymn. Maybe that was the song that Emmylou dueted with her on? Especially if you have the control top, secret panel, energizing, matrix minimizer, sheer to the toe style. Stockings seem to be a favorite metaphor for her that conjures up a facade behind which all is not what it seems. (which is, of course, the nature of facades) She also likes to use the moon as a symbol of what impossible thing can be achieved versus what cannot be done, "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" with "...we walked on the moon, you be polite." or "Willie" with "...he stood looking through the lace at the face of the conquered moon." I was going to pull out some more favorite metaphors, but Bob made me remember that I have to go out and buy pantyhose for tomorrow night, so I've been sitting here pondering about that instead.
