While I was critical of them at first (because of the Rolling Stone thing), as always my JMDL pals helped me to see things from Both Sides Now...I guess as a celebrity, your options are either to go public with all that sort of info or see it in the Tabloids. At least if you go public on your own, you get to put your own spin on it! Although it got a trifle ugly, the thread produced some profound thoughts from the likes of Michael and Patrick, and others as well, as it always does. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 23:00:59 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Dare I Say It?? "CD Tree"?..... Long It is not a coincidence that everyone who has responded about a new tree has mentioned this phrase: "CD". It appears that the JMDL has entered a new era- everyone expects the next JMDL tree to be a CD Tree and not a Cassette / DAT tree as it historically has been. This is dangerous ground because bootleggers would love to get a ready supply of CDs (which they can easily copy) of concerts from any major artist. JMDL wants no part of lining the pockets of bootleggers. I agree- not just because bootleggers have no right to a profit, but also because JMDL has close ties - very close ties to our beloved Artist. Could we just put a spoken announcement in each CD saying, "This CD was provided free to the trading community. Don't buy from bootleggers." It could be part of a track- any track- rather than a track of it's own. That way bootleggers would have to listen to the whole thing and edit it before duplicating. That would give them a dis-incentive to boot Joni. On the other hand, in the mp3 era, is anyone worried about CD bootleggers anymore? Maybe we have to take this off-list. Should we discuss this off-list, among those interested in the CD format? Is it time to take the tree activity off-list? Should we separate the sign-up activity from the official JMDL web site in order to satisfy the hunger for the CD format? Is our desire to spread audience recordings stronger than our desire to thwart bootleggers in a few big cities or is it more complex? "CD Tree"?..... Long Well, I have experience with CD trees. And we've dealt with this problem. I'm a huge Tori Amos fan. And after her hasteful 1999 tour of short setlists (due to the fact that she was sharing the evening with the wretched Alanis Morissette)-- she plaed a special solo piano show in London to finish it all off. It was an amazing show full of songs she didn't or couldn't play with her touring band. Of course, we all wanted a copy of this show. It is a milestone in Tori history, as it were. We were lucky enough to have a VERY good recorder present there that produced an excellent digital copy. We opened up a tree to anyone that wanted to participate. We spread the word anywhere we could that this show was freely available to anyone who wanted it. However, copies still surfaced on Ebay and Yahoo auctions. It took the work of a very devoted crew of people to watch for these auctions, and e-mail Ebay to have them stopped. Not a problem, as long as someone looks for them to appear. Furthermore, in many cases, we actually e-mailed the bidders of these auctions and told them how they could get the show for a much lower cost. NOW. Honestly, I doubt that Joni bootlegs would be this much in-demand. Tori Amos is about at the height of her popularity right now. Though, the possibility exists that Joni shows can fall into the wrong hands and get abused. The key is that we all work to make sure the trees are well-publicized and that anyone who wants a copy can find a place to obtain one without paying ~$25 per CD. I think that the Joni recording world can only benefeit from going to a CD format. However, it does bring new problems that we need to take into consideration. It will just be an adjestment. I think we can all handle it. eric - --- eric wilcox edwilcox@students.wisc.edu "It is absurd to divide people into good and bad.
