I have been frantically searching for a magazine a student brought to me last year: it was a National Geographic, dated in the 70's. Lo and behold! On the cover of the magazine was the jungle portion of the HOSL cover! No, it wasn't her work, it was a photograph that the album work was based upon. I can't put my hands on the magazine just yet (my room has been moved and I still haven't recovered), but I believe I recall the article being the typical NG fare, discussing the diminishing native populations and ways, lost to the lure of city life and city riches, as well as to corporate aquisition of lands (paving paradise...). Double meaning and ancient cultures/philosophies figure in many of Joni's works. That's why we love her so much, right? We keep peeling the layers of meanings and finding it more fascinating. I think Joni enjoys sitting back and watching us guess. I'm a newbie on this list...shy about jumping in and sounding silly...but had to get in this one! She has spent most of her 25-year career recording other people's music, occasionally placing a song of her own on an album. But for her new "Red Dirt Girl" (Nonesuch), she simply decided to write a whole album, then proceeded to come up with 11 of its 12 songs. That gave her a small problem with stage patter when she started a three-night stand on Monday night at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street, East Village). "I usually preface songs with who wrote them," she said ruefully. "But I wrote them, so I don't know what to say." The songs say enough on their own. After years at the intersection of traditionalist country, country rock and folk rock, Ms. Harris remade her music on her 1995 album, "Wrecking Ball." Working with the producer and songwriter Daniel Lanois, she moved her slender, reedy voice into a realm of echoing guitars and muffled drums. Where she had once sung mostly about love, she took up biblical language to sing about pilgrimages of heart and spirit. She has held on to Mr. Lanois's sound with her band Spyboy, which envelops her voice rather than simply accompanies it. Above the band's generally somber pulse, Ms. Harris's new songs contemplate existential quests and pleas. "Bang the drum slowly," she sang in one, "I'll speak of things holy." IMHO Simon and Dylan are probably the best singer/songwriters of our time. Next to McCartney and Lennon of course. And OK I'll have to admit I do have a great deal of respect for Jagger, but he's in a class all his own. Satisfaction is the best R&R song ever made. I told Sue about the hairless breeds but I think she thought I was pulling her leg. Sphinx are tremendous characters and just adroable. Like ET in suede. Feel hot too. However, if you live in a cold climate one must take care of them. Heat is important. Devon rex are also very simliar. They have hair but hardly any and what they do have is curled tight. Maybe they wouldn't affect allergie sufferers. Patti Smith merits at least honorable mention. Let's not forget Bob Marley, mon! Also making my list: Dave Wakling, Bonnie Hayes and Toni Childs. Stevie Wonder? Absolutely. He's a musical genius.
