Wondering only because I have been watching them over and over. For some reason, I find this to be compelling television, down to the MTV House of Style salute to Janet Jackson with its snippet of Big Yellow Taxi. I find myself humming "oops, I did it again..." which is scary. Even more, I am agreeing with Jim Carrey about Eminem: "He scares me; I like his music but he scares me." I am getting to like his music but still am clueless as to what his rage is all about. However, listening to his raps while watching him (putting words to body language) makes me think that Michael Yarborough (I know I dropped an extra vowel in there somewhere) is right in his interpretation of the little Em boy, for those who remember that thread... and maybe I am sitting in front of the tv so much because I haven't been feeling all that well (actually, quite unwell) for a while and the doctor ran some food allergy tests and listen to what I have to give up FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE (no little Egyptian virus that will pass, this is a lifetime of dietary restrictions): all milk - cool, except no cheese, no pizza, no yogurt, no ice cream ever again, and no cheese ravioli, no manicotti, no lasagna... you can't have those with no cheese! No ricotta! I am Italian, damn it! all alcoholic beverages (not much of a drinker anyway) malt and oats (there goes Captain Crunch, but hell, I can't have cereal anyway without milk....) cauliflower, horseradish, mushrooms, sauerkraut (these are good things to be told by your doctor never to eat again except for horseradish at Passover but then, I'm not Jewish, but with these dietary restrictions I'll sure be able to keep a kosher kitchen!) garlic (damn, I am Italian, how can I give up garlic?) bananas, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, cherries (remember all those I ate at the Pine Knob Joni Fest and forever after?), cranberry (Thanksgiving will be a disaster!), grapes, pineapple, watermelon, strawberries... that is like a listing of all of my favorite fruits, all forbidden forever. There have been days that all I ate was from this list thinking it was healthy! And what this does to strawberry sundaes, blueberry turnovers, etc., is frightening. My local baker had to lay off two employees today... no raspberries, olives, figs, dates, prune, raisins, sesame seeds... no loss to me on these at all No wine vinegar (no more of my special pasta sauce) maple syrup, honey, sugar cane, molasses, rice syrup, corn syrup... I can't have any (F word inserted here) ice cream but I can't even have sherbet, whose main ingredient is corn syrup; go the store and find anything packaged with corn syrup! No grape juice... with the no wine (no alcoholic beverages) what will I do on Sundays when I get to the part of the liturgy about communion, "drink all of it..." no orange juice (although oranges are allowed?????) no baker's yeast, no brewers yeast: and aren't these in all pastas, breads and cakes desserts? what I can eat: quinoa, kamut, spelt, agar, chard, carrageen, star fruit, longan: I have no clue what these are and they sure aren't products one buys in western Michigan! I can also eat: artichoke, chicory, escarole, leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, beets, spinach, parsnips; ok, I can eat these, but I won't, no way. I can also eat limes and lemons. Ok, who eats limes and lemons? I have, but that was usually to win a bet, not on a daily basis. I can eat: eggs (I hate eggs!) including duck eggs, and poultry including duck, and I have three pet ducks, Babe, Lil Bud, and Kriss, and if anyone thinks I can eat a kin of my pets, they are nuts! Life will be meat, rice, cucumbers, corn, peas, and that seems to be about it, other than I will become the world's largest consumer of potato pancakes (they are allowed!). I can eat coconut, but how does one eat coconut? So rather than dwell on my limited food resources for the rest of my life, I turn again to MTV's Video Music Award show and watch it again, and wait for the real Slim Shady to please stand up, please stand up... (the Rev) Vince, who can never eat pizza again and that is very sad indeed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 11:40:04 +1000 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Re: Harry's House "Yellow checkers for the kitchen Climbing ivy for the bath She is lost in House and Gardens He's caught up in chief of staff" To me these lines summarise their whole relationship and life. They are both in denial about the reality of their marriage. Harry's life is centred around his career, not his wife and family. He thinks the way to her heart is through the provision of material benefits. His wife was using "House and Garden" as escapism. Harry still loves his wife but he doesn't understand her emotional needs. She has been hiding her own "gut reaction" and doesn't know how to ask for the love she needs. I had a Joni Moment today at the House of Lights. It's a lighting fixtures store and I was there with my two children on a quick errand to buy a special type of bulb. Gregory, my 8 year old, says, "Hey Mom look, a Joni Mitchell painting!" Upon closer inspection, I saw that he was looking at a tiny copy of Van Gogh's Sunflowers that was decorating a night light. It made me smile to think that he made the association between the styles of these two painters. Joni says he is not cuddly and very independent but does do a little dance with her down the stairs every day. She waxes on about him and the other cats on the KCRW interview which I believe have been transcribed on JM.com. > And in keeping with the current minefield discussion of >women, men, marriage and materialism, what's the deal with >Nietzsche leaving El Cafe for a while? I would guess that with his well-known propensity to spray Joni's furniture, paintings and everything in sight, that he is a Tom cat. He's probably a rambler and a gambler and a sweet-talking ladies' man. The real reason he took off is because Joni tossed him out the door after he'd sprayed her couch one too many times. He got back at her by not returning and making her look all over for him for a couple weeks. To answer Pat's questions, El Cafe is very sweet and loyal to Nietzsche. I mean I know there are lots of women around but, damn, woman-me felt downright proud of that role they played. I mean, and I'm trying to understand this, you never see ONLY women doing something so public and ceremonial. You often see ONLY men, but never only women. So that was very moving to me.
