Adcock" Subject: James Taylor and Joni I haven't posted anything significant for a while, but felt like commenting on this. I'm sure this has probably been discussed at length before, but I was listening to Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon today, and the first track really struck me as being a song about Joni. I've heard Carole King say that Tapestry, Mud Slide Slim and Joni's Blue were all recorded about the same time, and not too far from each other (in terms of distance between recording studios) which is why they collaborated so much. But it seems fairly obvious that "Blue" was in James' mind when he wrote this song (Love Has Brought Me Around). Feel free to disagree at will, but the lines that struck me are: "Don't come to me with your sorrows anymore I don't need to know how bad you're feeling today" "When my sky was full of grey, and my day was full of blue There was nothing I could do, to see myself through Now my head is full of springtime, and my heart is full of you Goodbye lonely Blue, it shall all come true Miss November, I detect a frown Close your eyes, and turn it upside down" Anyone have any comments? Hell P.S. I'd like everyone to stop talking about Jonifest now please. It's bad enough that I wasn't there (again) without seeing all these posts about how wonderful it was. Alternatively, could someone please write that they hated it, and will never go to another one ever again? It might just cheer me up! P.P.S. I'm joking about Jonifest - sort of. _____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 07:16:11 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: I'm staying at the Whitehouse! When speaking of his father's death Mike said "Like the great Canadian poet Joni Mitchell said 'You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone'". NJC Dear Jonifesters, My post to the Laborday e-goup didn't come back to me, so I'm posting to JMDL. I don't believe that the mystery disease is West Nile. If it was West Nile, the incidence in the Joni-fest group is so high that it would be all over the Toppsfield /North Shore neighborhood. And if that were the case, it would be big news in Massachusetts, and nationally-- which it is not. Right? So I would suggest that this is not West Nile. As an alternative, isn't shell fish sometimes a vector for viral infections? This strikes me more relevant to the jonifest group. More generally, I suspect that this shared disease pertains to the food &/or environment at the church, Ashara's or Atty May's. (What were people eating at Atty May's?) I would contact Atty May on this outbreak promptly. And contacting a local board of health might be more effective & informative here than the CDC. Concern about the West Nile virus is such a big deal here in NYC that each case becomes a news report, along with the reports of when and where all the mosquito-killing spraying is being done. On the 11 o'clock news last night the report was that there are 3 new cases in boroughs other than Manhattan, and an Argentinian visitor wasn't one of them. Although there may actually be more cases than are officially reported (sometimes cases are called West Nile-like), if such a large group as the Joni-festers all had West Nile virus that would be huge news nationally. So the good news is that it's not West Nile virus because that can be very serious, but the bad news is that so many of you are sick, and if it's a food-caused ailment, that can be horribly miserable feeling (like I'm telling any of you stricken folks anything you don't know). Get better! Kakki, MG and Maggie - I'm sorry that you guys became so ill. Now Les, Steve Mixon and Claude. I hope you all are feeling much better now! Do you want to hear what my take is on all of this? ( I did study physiology in college) I think each illness is an isolated incident. All of the folks that did become ill are in their 40's, late 30's no? Our immune system tends to break down as we become older. Enter in not getting enough SLEEP and working too hard(MG), working ourselves to death(Maggie, Kakki, Claude, Les and Steve). Granted, we feel like we're in our teens ("Forever Young") when we come to Topsfield, but physically we are not. We can be in the best shape and healthy, but our immune system is not as resilient as it once was, especially when we wear ourselves down. It just makes us more susceptible to any virus that is around. In Les's case , he may just be allergic to mussels. John VT said that he turns green, purple or blue, I can't remember which, if he even touches a mussel. I ate shrimp; I practically bathed in them :~) Who would have thought that peeling shrimp could be so much fun! Great folks to peel shrimp with. I miss you guys! Man, Crowe is a huge Joni Mitchell fan! He was quoting her lyrics (He said that Shirley McClain reminds him of Joni's lyric "Laughing and crying, you know it's the same release") And talking to Rose at length about Joni's influence on him from when he was writing for Rolling Stone forward. Crowe is married to Nancy Wilson of "Heart," by the way. Plus, I read that Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn's daughter who plays Penny Lane in the film, listened to Joni ever morning of filming to get into character. We already know Goldie is a big Joni fan, based on her filmed comments that proceeded the TNT Joni tribute. Cameron Crowe and "Almost Famous" were the cover stories for last Sunday's "Datebook" entertainment section of the San Francisco Chronicle, too. An article therein talks about photographer Joel Bernstein, who was apparently a constant companion to Crowe when he was writing for RS. To quote: "Bernstein got his start as Joni Mitchell's photographer when he was still in high school and she was an unknown Los Angeles folkie." Joel, 48, has been Neil Young's photographer and archivist for some time now, according to the article. Of particular interest to me was part of the interview was Crowe that talked about one of his earlier films "Jerry Maguire." Many of you scoffed when I suggested that a line in that movie ("You complete me") might've been inspired by Joni's lyric. Well, now I'm certain it was! Ha! I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. However, I'd be interested to hear how you consider him responsible for the death of 100 million people. This is Karl Marx we're talking about here, not Hitler or Stalin. Setting aside political differences (I believe we're separated by a large chasm in the left-right divide), I think this is a very intemperate claim. Castro? Well, I've met a few Cubans, both pro and against him, but one thing all are agreed on (including a virulently anti-Castro woman I met last year) is that the lamentable state of much of Cuba's infrastructure is not unconnected to the US's trade embargo. As for Freud, there are too many views about him for anything even resembling a consensus to emerge. But your statement that "Thus there is no suprise that Freud was famous and no suprise that even today his supporters still parrot his meaningless drivel", well c'mon, don't you think that's just a tad reductive? How much Freud have you read anyway? I agree with you about Clinton, up to a point. Well, more than up to a point. The man is clearly governed by his penis above all other considerations, and there seems to be a lot of evidence that he is a rapist. What happens next? Al or George? Well, from this side of the pond, George looks like a caricature of a useless rich kid. Intellectually challenged? I'd say so, and I'm not just talking about his questionable grasp of history and current affairs. This "RATS" business: a bit of a joke, perhaps; what worries me is Bush claiming that "it must have been a mistake", or words to that effect. Purlease! By the way Marcel, I'm not implying by this that you are a Bush supporter (I'm sure anyone who isn't would be mortified to be misidentified as such), just pointing out the lack of a viable alternative to the Clinton/Gore axis. Anyway, enough about that, Peace and love to you all! West Nile is rare, and the complications/progression into encephalitis is even rarer (around 1%) The symptoms and progression of illness for the majority of us who got the sickest does not follow any pattern for any type of food poisoning, and was ruled out by tests in my own case. (thank you so much for the brian kennedy stuff), my music-slut brother bob who i barely got to speak with (though i did get to pinch his ass), amazing maggie, wally, peter, so many more. jeff clark, such a good guitarist, joining this community a little cautiously, but beginning to know how right it is for you. all the rest of you. mg. jody. one more memory. i barely got to speak with chuck e. this year (this sucks!) but i did spend a fair amount of time at atty may's with his wife barbara and sister evie. barbara and i have bonded through joni at madison square, jimmy webb in boston, last year at atty may's etc. evie was a new friend, and the three of us got into a conversation of appreciation for male legs, especially shapely calves. the jmdl winners, at atty may's, sunday september 3, 2000, were les and victor. i'm ready to let this post go. patrick np - jfp - victor johnson (waytoblu) - tangled - but i'm going to immediately replay the last song, sunflower ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 22:43:39 -0700 From: "Patrick Willoughby" Subject: Joni and Miles Davis, or not... A collaboration that never happened...There is a book entitled "The Joni Mitchell Companion: Four Decades of Commentary", edited by Stacey Luftig / NY, Schirmer Books, 2000, which compiles interviews and commentary on Miss Herself. One article in particular, reprinted from Grammy Magazine, Spring 1996, offers insight into Joni's relationship with Miles Davis. Apparently he didn't turn down her many offers to collaborate because of race, as she had thought, but because he had a problem with "words" getting in the way. Isn't that sad.
