Listers, just STOP it. Stop having all this dang happy fun! Gee, get with the program. For crying out loud you should be listing to formula music, vegging in the theatres on Hollywood dreck like HollowMan, or sucking up the latest political rhetoric and scams of politicians and their media nitwits. Les, I blame you... and the INTERNET for this madness. Why, o why do you send me this ray of sunshine (bletch!) on such a daily basis??? Well, either I'm turning in my Joni card, ... or maybe trying to JONI IN ON THE FUN!!!! The reviews from Topsfield are as outstanding as I knew they would be. Having met some of this fine group at Chicago's Rosemont Theatre and in Saskatoon, any JMDL gathering is bound to be a fine time! So, what say we have a few 'mini' fests before the first snowflakes sail? For all us gals and guys here in the midwest, I think Madison Wis. would make for a perfect gathering site. The food in the town is excellent and we could make a group pillgrimage to the site where the Hejira photographs were taken. (I can't ice skate, but I would love to run about in black through a few feet of new fallen snow there!) So, what say gang...? Mary? Steve? Gang? Heck, maybe this time I might be able to talk Mike D. up from the Louie area to join in! (Someone should be able to play...) We could get Kerry to sing. --I can't bring cajun shrimp, but I make a mean chocolate pecan pie... Let's talk! --Perhaps we can get several mini-fests gatherings going. (Then we force Bob the slut to perform at all of them...) "Ameliaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh, it was just a false alarm..." So I say we invite a smaller group: Laura Nyro (back from the spirit world) Joni Rickee Lee J. Kate Bush Since that's only four, I'd leave it to each one if they wanted to invite another sister singer-songwriter. Then they could relax, have a drink, a leisurely meal, let their hair down (literally & figuratively), kick off their shoes, and talk about what they share in common, such as: the creative process piano vs guitar based composition how their music has changed dealing with boyfriends /husbands who are not as rich, famous, powerful, talented as they are -- (i.e. stroking the fragile male ego?) career vs. marriage, family how to project themselves on stage getting older; the departing "sweet bird" the trials of the road the pleasures of the road dealing with the male "good old boy networks" in the star making machinery organizing their recording sessions relating to their FANatic followers (who want to drink their bath water & bear their child) lawyers, signing contracts protecting their voices and so on... So much to talk about! I'd be there just to pour the wine (and Kate's tea), & ask the occasional leading question-- but only if there was a lull. The whole thing will be discreetly video taped. Being a part of the pulling off of (bad grammar, I know, but I'm exhausted) a Jonifest is a joy in my life. I love doing it because 1. I love working with Ashara and helping her to realize her vision; 2. it nurtures my soul to feed people and give them the fuel to play their music which in turn nurtures me; 3. the music!; and 4. the people! Oh my gosh, the music. I have such vivid memories of sitting in various locales listening to live music...Ashara's air conditioned room on the hot and humid Friday night after a few hours of toiling in the kitchen with WallyK and Mags to create the salads for Saturday's lunch and being wilted and with a thirst that not even bubble water could reach -- but I digress - -- the point being that while sitting there ChuckE and Paz and Victor and others who I cannot recall were jamming and we had a live jukebox playing song after song...sitting at breakfast and having Victor serenade us with songs with rain in the lyrics (my favorite -- A Box of Rain) while I sipped my coffee and ate my Ashara-made granola...at the church, where talent after talent paraded before my eyes and ears...and on and on. Sadly, my aforementioned second event of the week (work, work, work) coupled with a strange fever that possessed me (no, not Joni fever) meant that I could not go to Atty May's. Much regret, but whatcha gonna do? Sweet memory...sitting with old friends and new, watching the soon-to-be-treed Mendel video, feeling just so warmly toward everyone. Sorry to be away from all of you for so long. I’ve been more swamped than a cluster of cat tails, and I’ve only been able to read the Digest on occasion, but as ever, Joni is never too far from my mind. I have a short breather between assignments and wanted to pull it all together for one big post before I get back to work. It’s a little late, but here is my ideal dinner party. Joni Mitchell Peg Bracken (of the “I Hate to Cook Book” fame) Anita Bryant Casey and Jean Kasem Jeff Stryker Donny Osmond Peter Perfect and Penelope Pitstop Charo Just kidding. The real list is (and a time machine would have to be used): Joni Mitchell Timothy Leary Margaret Mead Carl Jung Sigmund Freud Alan Watts Ingmar Bergman J.D. Salinger On a thread from a little while ago about what we do for a living, I am a freelance writer, among other things, and as of late, a screen writer and script doctor. Currently I am fixing up a script about an American Jewish woman and her adventure in the Sinai which led to a disastrous romantic encounter with a Bedouin tribesman and her ritual genital mutilation. Before that, I was working on the adaptation of a fascinating novel called WHEN NIETZSCHE WEPT by Irvin Yalom, the head of the Stanford psychiatric department. The complex, idea driven story is a fictional account of a series of therapeutic meetings between Nietzsche and Josef Breuer, the medical diagnostician who was Freud’s mentor. It was Breuer who was the first to implement and document “the talking cure” with the young hysterical woman referred to as Anna O. This case would become the catalyst for the psychoanalytic movement. The young Freud is also a character in this novel, as is the beautiful Lou Andreas-Salome, a very Joni-like poet who would become one of Freud’s disciples and a celebrated psychoanalyst in her own right. In doing research for this project, I had to do some more reading of the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, who as most of the people on this list are aware, is Joni’s favorite philosopher (and the namesake of one of her cats). It’s difficult to speculate as to what Joni’s own philosophies are as they have shifted over the decades. If she still subscribes to any religious or mystic traditions, that would be in direct opposition to Nietzsche’s philosophy. This is the man most famous for pronouncing to the world that “God is dead”. To paraphrase him, Nietzsche says : “Truth is arrived at through disbelief and skepticism, not through a child-like wishing something were so. The desire to be in God’s hands is not truth, it is a child’s wish for an everlasting bloated nipple. Surely we must realize that we created God and that all of us together have killed him.” Accordingly, Nietzsche equates prayer with superstition and magic. Almost 20 years ago, Joni was crediting her introduction to Klein as a result of her appeal to God, that Klein’s appearance in her life was a “divine intervention.” And on Night Ride Home (sorry to open up that can of worms again) there seem to be some lyrics which reflect some Christian faith. Maybe not -- the very smart folks on this list still can’t decide exactly what Joni was expressing by setting Keat’s poem to music and neither can I, except we knew it had something to do with Joni’s response to the Gulf War. In the end, Joni is still a woman of duality and not always operating within logical constructs or with any predictable consistency. Nietzsche would not look with fondness on her penchant for Native American mysticism, or friendshi p with and submission to a guru of any kind (as referenced in Refuge of the Roads and discussed a few times over the next decade). Two other things that Nietzsche wrote seemed to be particularly applicable to Joni’s life. He writes (and I am paraphrasing again) “Creativity and discovery are begotten in pain” as well as “If you wish to pursue the truth, you must forsake peace of mind and devote your life to inquiry.” Nietzsche’s own life, and in my opinion, his romanticized view of it, was that he was the lonely genius, the wayfarer whose unique ability to look at the harsh sun of the truth left him alienated from what he always referred to as “the herd”. By contrast, as much as Joni is first to admit that she is a loner who needs isolation for her work, she is also an accessible social being who has had many romantic relationships. Nietzsche was also unflinching and uncensored in his detest for women. He saw all women as predators, out to suck the life blood from men. In stark opposition to Joni, he saw the sexual act as degrading and as one of the “pleasures of the herd” and believed that part of becoming a super-man, or ubermensch, was to conquer one’s own personal lusts. With his power model of social relations, he saw women as annexing the strength of men since women “dispense” and limit the access to their bodies, using them to control men. It is likely that Nietzsche’s hatred for women was rooted in the unhappy relationship he had with his anti-Semitic sister and his mother, the widow of a Lutheran minister. His hatred and mistrust were exacerbated when he was rejected by Lou Salome (she attracted then rejected many of the most famous intellectuals of her day) who he originally saw as his “twin brain” , a woman that he hoped to make his chaste wife. Anyway, don’t mean to get too heavy. My other strange Joni moment came last weekend when I attended the Burning Man Festival in Nevada over the weekend. If you don’t know anything about this bizarre, extreme art festival on the remote salt flats of northern Nevada, check out www.burningman.com. The festival culminates in 30,000 techno-gypsies, revelers, artists etc. gathering around the giant wooden effigy of The Man which is beautifully and skillfully burned as fireworks go off, flame throwers scorch the sky, and fire dancers and mechanical dragons entertain the crowd before they rush the inferno in a dancing cyclone of humanity, purging whatever they hope to burn out of themselves. All week long, differently themed camps have been indulging in extreme behaviors of all kinds, sporting bizarre costumes (or nothing at all but glitter or fluorescent paint) and driving strange vehicles and playing strange games. Lots of camps have erected temporary discos or theaters where raves and concerts go on all night long. Ecstasy and LSD are the reigning drugs of choice in this temporary nation/Walpurgis Nacht/psychedelic Mardi Gras which looks like a cross between the set of The Road Warrior and Alice in Wonderland. Hours of partying after the burning of The Man, and dressed as Dr. Strange, I got separated from the friends of my tribe in a quest for water (which I never found) and wandered towards a tent/disco which had a fish/seaweed/aquarium theme where I thought I heard Joni at about 4a.m. The landscape looked like a pioneer outpost on a newly colonized planet with lasers dancing in the sky and strangely clad aliens darting in and out of cold shadows and ghostly tents. I got closer to the tent and realized I was not hallucinating. People, some of them naked, were doing a minimal dance to an extended techno remix of Big Yellow Taxi! Has anyone else heard this yet? Most of the lyrics were included and very much reshuffled. Anyway, Burning Man was the most intense, gorgeous, disgusting, hilarious, awe inspiring, scary and magnificent party I have ever attended. And I plan to be there next year. If anyone wants to know more about it, write me and I will send you a copy of my computer diary post for that weekend when I finish it. Finally, I want to let everyone know that I completed the recording of my first (and maybe last) CD of original songs and when it’s burned, I’d love to send a copy of it to everyone on this list who would like to hear it. It was one of the best experiences of my life to do this, and I encourage anyone who has ever fantasized about recording an album to just do it. I’m going to dedicate this album to Roberta Joan Anderson, and plan to thank many of the groovy, beautiful people on this list who helped me, answered my questions, listened to the demos, encouraged me, lent me equipment, listened to my whining, put up with my performances and rudimentary abilities. A few people have asked me what kind of music it is -- I tell them that I see myself as a kind of gay Bob Dylan, but a straight male friend of mine said that I am more like the male Holly Near (LOL!). Anyway, back to work -- I have some bills to pay! xxoo, Clark NP: Chemical Brothers ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 16:29:28 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: The Pictures are UP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unforunately, what I DON'T have is any more vacation time! :~( Bob NP: Elvis, "King of America" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 22:08:02 -0400 From: Maggie McNally Subject: Jonifest addendum (NJC) In sending off my attempts at conveying some of my Jonifest memories/experiences I neglected to give props to a few people who helped in the food department. Jody -- you rocked! I was so grateful to have someone to whom I could say "could you take care of this?" and know that it would be done. Thank you, most sincerely. Also to Nikki, who pitched in with parsley cleaning chores, and who helped with set up when we got to the church -- thank you. I enjoyed gabbing and getting to know you a bit better while standing at the kitchen counter. WallyK was an enthusiastic potato salad prepper -- even as we wilted in the kitchen's heat. Hey, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. We could, and we didn't until the job was done. I loved talking about music, trying to recall the name of a RickiLee song that I love, and then having Chuck start to play it later, oblivious to its significance to us. Wally then got up and started to croon the tune. That, my fellow JMDLers, is what Jonifest is all about. Mags was the leader in the potato salad prep, and she came through in grand style. She's a gracious, kind, lovely woman with a warm, warm smile (as you likely have seen on the 'fest picture site...thanks Les!). At the church we had help from Alison, who is in a similar line of work to mine. Sorry we didn't get to sit and talk more about all the things one can find to gab about. We also had clean-up help from Bruce, Patrick and Kenny, who responded to my call for help down in the basement, while the rest of the elves - I mean people - were doing amazing things upstairs to bring the church back to the pristine shape it was in before we arrived. You would not believe how many times, in many ways, this group proved the adage, "many hands make light the work." Thanks for "listening." I debated whether I should just post this to the Jonifest2000 list, but many of you seem to want to know details, so I thought I'd share the rest of my story. I already shared this with Ashara and a couple of others at the JoniFest this past weekend, but coming home and then seeing this on the list prompted me. Here I go ( might be long): EnRoute to Ashara's , travelling I-95 north from Rhode Island, you must pass the small town of Reading, Massachusetts. Back in '73-'74 I lived in the area and shared a small two bedroom, second floor appartment with someone I had only met a day or two before moving in. She turned me onto Court and Spark and we played it till it probably wore itself out. Anyways, while going to JoniFest, I saw the exit and wondered if I could find my way back to Haven Street ( the real name of the Street by the way) and just take a ride by the old place after all these years. I found it alright, exactly where I remembered it being, about a block up from a turn of the century train station, that does the commute into Boston everyday and then back again at night. I approached the street wondering if I would see the old place still situated on a corner lot ( it is a flat iron shaped building and creates a fork in the road ). It is now the only building left on that street that hasn't been torn down or renovated into some shiek shoppe. Well, I had to circle the block a couple of times after I threw in the Court and Spark CD in my stereo. I was immediately transported back to a time in my life where I grew in mind and soul..... I so wanted to be naive again and feel what again what it felt to move into a wonderful time in my life. Unfortunately, I do not possess the powers to turn time back, so I had to be content in reliving it in my minds eye. I found my way back to I-95 and headed to the JoniFest only to find that there were others there that I was sure had so many like experiences in their lives. I measured my trip in songs. They measure like I do, with music and songs and times and places and people surrounding all of that . That side trip on the way to the Fest jumpstarted that wonderful weekend. And when I got to the Fest and met so many love filled people, I thought to myself, " you wanted to feel new again, young again, you wanted to go back in time, why?, you are embarking on a new adventure walking into a group of Joni fans, this is like finding something wonderful all over again, this is going to be one of those times in your life when you think to yourself many times over - Another Court and Spark. Go with it JOE, another Haven Street. " That is my Court and Spark. I'm really finding it difficult to come down from three wonderfully exhausting days of Jonifest. There was music in the air and laughter and debate going on throughout the weekend. Oh and lots of celebrating. I have so many fond memories "longer than the road that stretches out my head." I didn't want to leave for home. I feel truly honored and wealthy to be part of a dynamic community. It was a dream come true for me to finally meet some of my favorite listers. My expectations were far surpassed by their sincere friendship and camaraderie. Les, Ashara, ChuckE, Maggie, Heather and Paz I can't thank you enough for all your hard work and efforts that were instrumental in making this whole celebration become a reality. Victor, I have not stopped playing your CD Tangled. You have transcended me into another realm. Your kind gentle spirit emerges from your music as it does your smile. Simply romantic. True artistic genius. Julius, I can still remember our little walk on the beach. Thanks bro. Oh and what about Bob. You are simply charming. yes, I'm in love too. And Les with your steadfast placid way about you. I love you bro. Kakki had us laughing so with her California stories. Or should I say Kokkie (LOL) You are a so entertaining to have at a party. I'm so glad to have finally met your acquaintance. And Paz, you are The Man! So, did you like your picture with your boys on the rocks? I hope so. It was my best shot! So you really do think I'm a charmer, eh? Last but not least. Alison thanks you for being an excellent navigator through the rain, fog, mist, and hallucinations etc. More to come, so stay tuned… ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 22:57:37 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Court and Spark Thoughts In a message dated 9/7/00 10:31:31 PM Eastern Daylight Time, SAVtheWAVE@aol.com writes: << It is now the only building left on that street that hasn't been torn down or renovated into some shiek shoppe. >> A-rabs have taken over the neighborhood? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 22:13:52 -0500 From: Scott and Jody Subject: The Boys on The Rocks Rose! Seeing the good friends I met in New Orleans, and making so many wonderful new ones here made it a very special weekend indeed. "At Last", after corresponding with her for so long, I finally got to meet Ashara! It was not surprising to find that she is as warm, gracious and enthusiastic as I had expected. From the moment when she picked me up at my hotel and I received my first incredible hug, I knew that I had met a friend for life. No doubt the long line of cars that was waiting for us to pull away must have thought that I had just returned home from the war to my loving bride. This weekend held so many special moments: there was music, food, music, drinking, music, talking, music, laughing, music, hugging, music, and LOVE. Did I mention there was music? I know I'll probably leave some of my favorite moments out of this post, but there were just too many to possibly mention. Besides Ashara, I want to thank three other JMDLer's who made this event possible. It was my first time meeting Maggie, Heather, and ChuckE. I can see why Ashara won't have another Jonifest unless she has your help. The food, decorations, and stage setup were incredible, and you wonderful people made it all happen. Sal, even though you're not on the list, I consider you an honorary member. Every time I saw you, you were cleaning, restocking, and making sure everyone was taken care of. You and Ashara are such a perfect couple and I thank you for making us feel at home. It was just like homecoming seeing the warm and wonderful people I had met in New Orleans: *Steve and Leslie Mixon, you are the sweetest and most musical couple I've ever met, and it was so good to see you both again. *Michael, I feel like I've known you all my life. You have such a gift for music only to be matched by your kindness and sense of humor. I thank you for allowing a nonmusical person like me to help sing background vocals on "Song for Sharon" (even though I think my microphone was turned off). You do give one hell of a butch hug :~) *Kakki (or should I say Kaahhki), your wonderful stories, your beauty, and your great voice kept me company the entire weekend. *Victor, you truly are the music man! I don't think there is anyone alive that loves to share music like you do. I'm sure if we had had a musical instrument only found in Botswana, you would be able to play it. *Bob Muller, only you can make me laugh so hard that my sides ache. Your kindness and charisma from your daily emails is just a fraction of what you are like in person. *John, although you may bring wonderful chocolates and cigars from the Netherlands, the most important thing you bring is your heart. What a kind gentle man you are! It was so wonderful to hear you sing on stage this year. One fond memory I have is on Ashara's deck with about a dozen people singing in the cool Topsfield air. You and I both had our arms around Claudia trying to keep her warm. What a sense of togetherness! *Claud, seeing you again was so special. You have the beauty and voice of an angel. I could listen to you sing and play guitar all night long. Joni herself would be envious to hear you sing "Conversation". I am so blessed to know you. *Catgirl, although you weren't there very long, it was still great to see you again and it was great to hear You, Leslie and Kakki singing again. *Les, there would be no JMDL if it wasn't for all your hard work. It was so good to see your warm smile and to party with you again. You're the best! As for the people I met for the first time, it was just as special as seeing my old friends. I just wish I could have spent more time with each and every one of you. I did manage to get some quality time with some of you: *Bob Murphy, what can I say? I had no choice but to get to know you. Even though our hotel was only 2 miles from Ashara's, we managed to get lost and it took over an hour to get back. I really enjoyed our talks about life, Joni, and the JMDL (I think we got lost 3 or 4 times, but it was fun seeing all the other U.S states trying to find our way back :~) Thanks for all of the rides and "Wendy's". You are a wonderful man, and I'm so glad I got to know you! *MG, from the first time we met, I said to myself "This is one FUN FUN FUN girl". You cracked me up the entire weekend, and your wit is only surpassed by your sweetness and loving warmth. *WallyK (my baby Walter), we finally meet after many, many emails. I always knew you were witty, intelligent, and kind. Now I know that you are also a great vocalist, and a very handsome man too! I was so proud listening to you sing your heart out in the church. You put so much soul into your singing. I can't wait to go to a Buenos Aires Joni Fest! *Jody, with those beautiful eyes, I had so much fun getting to know you. I even had a great time helping you set up your tent (the butchest thing I've done in years). *Nikki, I just want to thank you for dancing all the cha cha music with an old fart like me. You're such a sweetie! *Julius, that smile you have! I don't think I ever saw it leave your face. I loved listening to your brilliant harmonies, and singing "Just My Imagination" with you in Ashara's kitchen. *Brian, I've been reading your posts since I've been a member of the JMDL, and you are as wonderful as I had imagined. Thanks for sharing some magical moments both at the church and at Ashara's. What a warm and passionate man you are. *Mags, since your first email to me on April 2nd when we shared our love for "Court and Spark", I knew you were a special person. You are the most loving person I've ever met, and I can still feel the everlasting hugs you gave me the entire weekend. Thank you for being such a beautiful caring person. *Alison, I'm not sure if New York is ready for you yet, but I sure am. You are a hoot! As the night turned to early morning, your voice got sexier and sexier. I'm still jealous that you pinched Muller's butt and not mine :~) I also want to thank Marcel, Evian, and Marian for calling Ashara's house. It was so good talking to each of you. (and thanks for your wonderful new CD Marcel) I must tell everyone who has not attended a Joni-fest, don't think about it, Just do it! Make your plans now, and get ready to be with the best group of people in the world. Thanks again Ashara! You're the greatest. This was a weekend I'll never forget.
