Thanks Ashara, Jimmy, Jim, and Paz for getting them out so quick - I'm still there! This was once again an AMAZING Fest!! It is just unbelievable to me the amount of planning and detail that goes into making this happen and Ashara, ChuckE, Maggie and Heather outdid themselves this year. An entire house worth of equipment, food, decorations, hundreds of gifts, a gigantic shrimp grill and people was hauled in the rain to a gorgeous old church building in the rain and set up in no time flat. There was so much emotion and feelings of love in the place and so many special moments and surprises. I must rest and recover for now but will send my full report sometime tomorrow. Thanks to Ashara and everyone who made this happen. It was fantastic!!! Thanks also to my very "best boys" Julius and Michael for getting me there and back in one piece ;-) Love, Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2000 02:54:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Jenny Goodspeed Subject: Re: New England Jonifest I am so enjoying the Jonifest reports and I was there! The highlights for me... Goodies! As if 2 passes at the raffle table wasn't great enough, Ashara bestowed us all with wonderful Joni photos and artwork by a list member whose name I cannot recall. The Beach and Atty Mays! What a great spot. It was a warm cloudy day (perfect for a pale skin like myself). Oh my, you all must get a chance to see Bob M. dance one day. Wow! The People! I couldn't tell the newbies from the oldies - everyone was so comfortable and welcoming. There were little moments when you had to remind yourself what a rare gathering of people it was. To share a passion with each other that most people in our daily lives don't quite grasp. And the Music! Bob M. did a beautiful and thoughtful version of Amelia with Paz playing gorgeous guitar. John Van Tiel's rendition of a beautiful love song in Dutch was very touching - even though I didn't understand the words (he translated later for me). Wally K.'s cover of Coyote was fascinating - a poetic delivery - incorporating vocal improvisation. Very cool. Victor - as if it wasn't enough that he plays lord knows how many instruments (including a 7 string electric bass), he has a great voice to boot! And Anne's set and songs were just beautiful. I hope to get to hear some more some day. I got to hear the much raved about "Claudia's Conversation". And it was awesome. As was the rest of her set. Oh yeah, Leslie M. and Victor on piano doing Ludwig's Tune - another highlight for me. Oh and finally - when we gathered for the group photo and the end and broke out into a multi-harmony Find the Cost of Freedom - that was just awesome. I'm hoping to keep a piece of the magic from Jonifest in my daily life and I wish for you all the same. Jenny - --- Heather wrote: > Despite the uncooperative weather, Jonifest 2000 was > terrific! The goodbye part makes me SO melancholy, I'm actually glad I didn't say a lot of goodbyes. I recall last year I had a couple of very non-butch crying jags on the airplane heading home. This year was better. However, I realize that I missed out on what would have been some state-of-the-art hugging, so keep in mind the next time you see me I'll be in a hug deficit! Ashara, can I go ahead and sign up for 2001 - I'm already getting excited! ;~) It reminds me of Meryl Streep's great line in "Out Of Africa" when she kisses him goodbye and he comments about her complacency...she says "I'm better at Hello"...I know how she feels... So I must take what time I have to post my thoughts on Jonifest 2K. First off, THANK YOU ALL. I never expected for it to have such a huge impact on me as a person. These people are amazing. There's no way I could ever express how mind-boggling it is to hook up with a bunch of your best friends you never met before. Does that make sense? Anyway, it was absolutely an incredible weekend, and the only thing that I could be dissapointed about is not getting to meet everyone on this list. For those I did get to meet, none dissapointed. Kakki really is one of the funnest and funniest party-babes around. Paz IS the definition of cool. Or it could be toss-up with Simon... Ashara is as genuine and kind and loving as you expect. Patrick L.-a man who knows how to have a conversation. Loved him! John van Tiel-never mind the chocolates, YOU are the sweetest (and wittiest) thing. Julius, Julius, Julius....words cannot describe! Loved him! As Bob says, I fell in love with the men of jmdl. And Bob, don't even get me started on Bob! (Thanks for the dance. I won't ever forget it.) I wish I had time to mention every person I met. I keep thinking of names-Jody! Mags! MG! ANNE! CLAUD! Joe! You were all truly special and made an impact on my heart. Even the somber ones...(hi jeff! ;-)) Special thanks to my travelling partner Rose, who braved rain, fog and severe lack of sleep to get us where we needed to go. I could go on for hours about the weekend, but I think the pictures will speak for themselves. If ever you are in Mass, you must go to Atty May's. Not only is the place funky and cool and beautiful, Atty May herself is a very groovy woman! I hope to see you all next year. (or sooner!) Unfortunately, the post-Jonifest blues do exist, by the way. And they really suck! To Sal (who truly is a saint), Maggie, Ashara, Chuck, et. al., all my love and gratitude to you for the hard work and effort. You made it seem so easy, when I know it was very labor intensive. I am honored and greatful to be a part of this community. Thank you all for the best weekend I could have imagined. Don't move! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2000 14:12:35 -0400 From: B Merrill Subject: A Tip Top's Field Jonifest Firstly and most importantly: While this was my very first Jonifest, and I didn't know anybody (at all), everybody was warm and chatty and sociable. So if there are any newcomers out there, stray cats sitting on the margin fiddling with their whiskers, wondering whether they should go to a Jonifest, or whether they would just find themselves cut out of the loop, I say: Pack your bags, buy your ticket, and go! You'll have a great time. The event is clearly a wonderful reunion for all those returning again and again... but that adds to the pleasure of it. You will be welcomed. Then I have to say: how nice it was to hear Victor and Michael Paz's voices up close in the intimate setting of the sing-along on Ashara's back porch, after returning from the church. And hearing Catgirl sing her medley of Joni tunes in the living room. Especially because I came back from the church not having heard enough Joni! Can this be true?!? you ask. Well, as I suspected, and as dear Maggie confirmed, it was an atypical fest for how much non-Joni music was happening on the main stage. Much worshipping of false Gods. But not by the beautiful Catgirl. Once upon a time, before radio and phonograph recordings, the essential site of music was standing around an upright piano in the parlor, or playing a guitar, a dulcimer on the porch. Then, at that place, there was spontaneous group singing, a wonderful kind of being together which is rare in this world, and getting rarer. But there's a great deal of this still at Jonifest. Most spontaneous & most groupy of all was the singing fun that took place during the final group photo session; songs came and went, according to the group whim. Other personal highpoints, in no order: Leslie and Victor's extended duet. Wally's powerful falsetto taking us into Orff territory (I just bought his Trionfi de Aphrodite yesterday. Karl's, not Wally's.) Wally yelling "Relax!!" And how it was parried by a smiling young lady and her guitar. Anne's lovely & strong voice, & expressivity. Bob learning from Michael about singing Joni from the masculine point of view. Or was that mescaline? (Just kidding. His urine sample passed Ashara's lab test.) Talkin SLC with that smokin & drinkin jack-Mormonette, Allison. [At one point Ashara cried out at her back porch table: "What's with all the smoking???" She'd dozed off and thought she was at Tofu-fest. Only reprobates like myself don't smoke at a Jonifest. Forgive me, Joni!] Belgian chocolate courtesy of J. von T. It flew the Atlantic to be consumed by us. And there was more Belgian chocolate back at Ashara's. And those choco-mints sitting there on the kitchen counter. And then I saw some more... over there... but I held back... Oh, Let's go to Belgium and have a beerfest & chocofest! Summer's over, so we can cancel our failed diets. And so I salute you, O Great Mother Ashara, who has the energy, warmth, flexibility and competence to be the Perfect Hostess. Well, that's what it looked like from the outside. I hope you had a swell time, on the inside. hasta luego, Bruce M PS Plus I had the oportunity to crash on the living room floor, "like we did last summer," something I haven't done since the distant daze of my wild youth. May raved and raved about us - she thought we were the nicest, funnest, most wonderful group of people she's met in many an age. She was getting raves and phone calls from her "locals" afterward that it was the BEST night for them EVER. Special thanks to ChuckE and his band and the jimdle band of Paz, Victor and Claud for getting them and us up on our feet dancing on the ceiling. May is a rare and great soul and she invited Paz, Julius and I to stay at her house for a couple days. If you think the restaurant is magical and incredible you should see her house! OH MY GAWD! Truly the main rabbit hole into Wonderland. In her main hang-out room/salon we were greeted by two large black and white photographs of Billie Holliday and Miles Davis. She is a secret artist and painter and has painted literally every available surface in the house with the fanciful, the humourous, the profound, and the obscure. She seriously has a talking cat named Zorro. He freaked us out at first and then we realized that it is all part of the divine and magical plan ;-) A kindred spirit, indeed. It may also be available at newsstands. It's basically a "things to do around town" (NY) magazine. Haven't seen this edition yet - actually haven't picked up the mag in quite some time. Hi kids, Beautiful reviews from Jonifest, eh? Mmmmm. I dream of Paz shrimp and Muller crooning Joni. --Where's the proof? C'mon, proof. Proof. Anyway, here's another request zipping off into internet land... Did anyone keep track of information as to who, where, or when the film documentary on Joni Mitchell will be released? --Somewhere in my mind, I recall it being a British production Company that was trailing her around Sk'toon. If so, --knowing the resiliant, limitless skills of this group for all things Joni-- would anyone care to do some sleuthing for us? I'm sure there must be an blabber mouth inside of this production company willing to share info regarding the project. It certainly won't be released soon, but Christmas would make for a wonder release date! For a while I was bumbed, thinking all the good stuff is behind us... but with the Joni Documentary, The Art Book and Tribute CD to look forward to, well gosh dangit, --I'm excited! John, not Rich. Not in Seattle. Not in Topsfield. Not making a lot of sense. - --Ok. ok. So no one seems to have the Catalogue from the WTRF tour to show me. You are not imagining it and I'm sure there's a few here who have it. Julius brought his to Topsfield and I got to peruse it last weekend. Very lush. I think they occasionally come up on eBay, too. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2000 21:44:23 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Details, details, details O.K., those of you asking for more details have provoked me, the wordy one ;-) There's just so much to tell and it's impossible to fit it all in but I'll try to relate more moments and hope I don't leave out anyone - It was wonderful this year to meet so many new partiers who all added so much to the fun and the music - Jenny (amazing music set - and an instant star), Bob Murphy and Joe from R.I. (mega sweet guys - wish I could have recovered enough to meet you both in Rhode Island, hopefully next time ;-), Mags (mucho fun and very sweet), Rose + Alison (add Jody and we have our own "Three Bitchin Babes" - you all are just too much fun!!), Nikki (so cute and another most worthy partier) and Linda, Leslie S., Bruce, Evie (ChuckE's sister) and Marilyn (wish I would have spent more time with you all - hope to do better next time) and Walter (gorgeous long-time lurker who is Ms. Catgirl's new best friend ;-) Although Alison, Nikki, Joe and Jeff did not grace the main stage this year, they really should have - luckily we got to hear some of their talent during the all night jam sessions. You guys are so good - please don't hold back next time! Then the old pals who were first-timers to Ashara's - simon (God, what a complete surprise! Mr. Mystery, Mr. Cool, and anyone who requests one of my martinis at 4 in the morning can certainly hang with the crowd - Sail on Sailor, simon ;-) Leslie and Steve Mixon (the ultimate chanteuse and the superstar mando player - thank you both for your incredible contributions), Jimmy (always darling, always smiling and hugging - if only we could bottle and sell you!), Victor (hold me back, there is not enough room in a post for all my raves about him - thank you for everything), Julius (another stellar and true gentleman with the slyest, driest wit behind that ever-smiling face) Long distance phone callers this year - First Place record goes to Marcel, who I think we collectively kept on the phone for around two hours! Loved this year's musical entry very much, Marcel - you're too good. Evian! I finally got to speak with one of my favorite listmembers but he really has to get there in person next time so he can make me roll on the floor laughing real time! Marian - who is always missed but everyone was so glad to hear from - hope you can meet up with the SoCal group sometime soon! Then the "old-timers" - Bob (of course he came generously stocked with CDs for people - I LOVED hearing Amie!), my sweet old pals Patrick (who never ages and always looks like a cute teenager), Kenny (looking like a GQ model these days - I need to get on your fitness plan, my friend!), Jody (so real and kind and a first rate partier - I'm so glad you were there!), Mr. Van Tiel (I so enjoyed our walk on the beach pretending we were on the coast of Holland - your warmth and generosity are so essential to our gatherings), Claud (an always amazing musical talent and warm and fun - I'm so glad you were there), Catgirl (it was great to see you and hang out for awhile - I wish you much happiness) MG (another real and caring person - hope to try the Taylor Ham next time ;-) WallyK (thank you so much for the wonderful earrings and bracelets and yourself), Brian (the twinkle in your eye never stops - wish you could have followed us to Atty Mays), Paz (who arrived at the airport carrying a freaking piano, VG-8, guitars, shrimp for 40 people and multiple other goodies in his bags, our musical soulmeister - thank you for your huge friendship to all of us), our dear Les (who built it and we all came - thanks for your great patience with all of us and all you do in such a quiet and humble way), Anne (who looked beautiful and brought tears to all our eyes - your original songs are so gorgeous - and please forgive us for subjecting you to that godawful shrimp gutting and peeling!) There were so many memorable moments - some more that stick with me are: - Leslie and Victor performing Ludiwg's Tune - - Bob and the boys on Amie - - Victor channeling Neil Young at Atty Mays - - ChucE and band taking the crowd 8 Miles High at Atty's - - Paz and Julius cracking up the night clerk at the Motel 6 with their Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin act - - The long, extended impromptu set of songs by the whole group on stage at the end - - Alison's hilariously ribald and perfectly executed song out on Ashara's deck - - Les and I commenting how the Saturday night afterparty at Ashara's was like the virtual list and you could follow from thread to thread - in one room was the Joni music, in another was the NJC music, in the kitchen there was passionate debate, and in another room was a small group just sitting back silent listening - the lurkers, of course!! Thanks again to everyone who made it happen and who gave so much of their sweet selves. Many kisses and hugs to you all, Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #486 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
