Coincidentally, I've been in a heavy Milton mode lately, owing to his 1976 album "Milton" finally being released on CD (I wore out two vinyl LPs). It's a companion piece to Wayne Shorter's masterwork "Native Dancer" which itself introduced Milton to a lot of North Americans, featuring half Milton's songs and half Wayne's tunes, plus Herbie Hancock on piano and many wonderful Brazilian musicians. "Milton" was the follow up, all Milton's songs with the same band, including Wayne and Herbie ... oh, man, oh, man, oh man. So I've been digging that and two other brilliant CDs of Milton's: "Clube Da Esquina" and "Clube Da Esquina 2." These three (four, really, counting "Native Dancer") are all essential albums, some of the greatest, most joyous, most poignant, most human music ever made, anywhere. Anyway, my choices for Joni collaborations are: Milton Nascimento Sting James Taylor Bill Frisell Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays Especially Metheny/Mays ... I'd love to hear a true 3-way collaboration rather than the sideman roles they had on S&L. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Sep 2000 03:15:14 EDT From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: re: just an idea Matthew Snyder >>The guy who would be PERFECT PERFECT for Joni would be Abrecrombie's >>occasional collaborator, guitarist/composer/pianist Ralph Towner. Happy weekend, Rob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Sep 2000 15:21:32 +0800 (JST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: Re: collaboration w/ JONI and Dark Secrets Musicians I want Joni to collaborate with: 1) Bill Frisell the blending of the talent of this masterful guitarist and the masterful vocalist can lead to exciting new highs. 2) Cassandra Wilson Cassandra covered two Joni songs already and admitted that she's a fan of Joni and her DJRD and FTR albums. I would love to hear them duet on a Joni song (say BYT or Little Green) or a standard (say "What's New" a' la Betty Carter and Carmen McRae). 3) Dawn Upshaw It would be interesting to hear Joni do a duet with a soprano and in a different context. Upshaw, of course, like Renee Fleming and Audra McDonald are three of the sopranos who adored Joni. 4) Paul Weller It would be great to listen to two of my favorite songwriters record together. And that they cover each other's song. 5) Barbra Streisand Now, I would like to hear how two very different artists come up with a performance where both complement each other's vocal qualities and not upstage one another. This, I would like to hear. I may be even compelled to buy this Streisand album (that is if, its not found in Joni's). DARK SECRETS: 1. I like the live action version of 101 DALMATIANS than the much preferred cartoon version. Glenn Close, for me, is more Cruella than Cruella De Vil herself. 2. I own CDs of Barry Manilow, Diana Ross and Gloria Estefan (the albums where they sang standards; otherwise I am not a fan of any of the three). 3. I thought BABE should have been the Best Picture instead of BRAVEHEART. 4. That I am curious to know the identity, or at least the gender of my stalker. (But I always tell people I don't want to know). 5. Can't still make up my mind whether its singing I hear or caterwauling from Maria Callas, or if its jazz improvisation or caterwauling for John Coltrane's post 1960s work. 6. That the "dream cast" members for THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS movie adaptation were all miscast. 7. That those celebrities who say they are hounded by the media/paparazzi deserved what they are subjected to. IMHO, you just can't turn on and off those people who somehow made you famous -- that's the price they have to pay for being celebrities. 8. That I secretly was flattered when people started saying I look like the alleged murderer of Versace when the papers were full of stories about him - Andrew Cunanan. 9. That I sometimes like it when people disagree on the list because it makes me understand some issues better, and read beautiful prose written especially when one is defending something close to one's heart. 10. Preferred to surf the internet than spend time with my girlfriend. I read yesterday that the first issue is now worth £100. That's a 100,000 % return on investment, which beats the stock market by a long way. RS was certainly educational for me in those days. The old fashioned type script kind of gave it an air of authority. The issues which stick in my memory the most are ones with the inside about Charles Manson, the Karen Silkwood story, and the time John Lennon debunked all the Beatles myths over two issues and went from pop to rock star overnight. Apart from the "old lady" saga (which would be long forgotten if Joni didn't keep reminding us about it) I would say she was treated well by RS in the 70's. Looking back at some old copies, I found For The Roses was record of the year and she shared musician of the year with Stevie Wonder in the critics poll another year. Oh, yes, please do. That new-to-me sound I heard did seem a little too soft and "round" to be a xylophone, but that's the closest instrument I knew of. Well, it was another stellar day in Jonifest history! It has FINALLY stopped raining! I guess the Gods thought it was another UK Fest so we got all the rain! Luckily Ashara, (She is queen undisputedly of party planning) had our alternative location ready for us, so we hauled all the gear, including the gas grill for Paz's shrimp, to this little church in a nearby town. And it was the best time I've had in church in a while! Drinking cold beers and listen to Joni's music is my idea of a great church service! And the building did NOT cave in when Jimmy walked in, and he even sang, so it's true, miracles do happen! :~) Of course, for a slut like me the music is always the thing...and it was a great day of music. I was EXTREMELY honored to be able to sing with Michael Paz. We did "Furry Sings The Blues", "Amelia", and along with some helpers a killer version of Pure Prarie League's "Amie". Lots of fun, and I think it sounded OK, too! I'm not going to go in a LOT of detail, because there are many JMDLer's to hang and party with...phase 2 of the day is beginning - I hope I can make it!
