Whoa, this makes me LOL! I agree! I read Pride and Prejudice years ago and when I finished the last page turned to the first page and read the whole book again. I was sure I'd missed some things and yep, the second time was even more enjoyable than the first. And I read all of Dickens, one after the other. Both of those authors make me laugh out loud, especially in their descriptions of people's behavior. They're so precise. And Dickens with his sometimes preposterous wrapping up of all the threads... downright goofily funny sometimes. But Henry James -- just shoot me now if I ever again have to read one of his books. Torture to read all that detail because I just do not care about his characters and there's no humor anywhere. Can't remember now the books of his that I forced myself to get through (suppressed bad memories :-), but never again. Yeehaa!!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 18:58:04 -0500 From: Richard Rice Subject: Hejira, You're da greatest baby!!! Hi gangland, What's all the fuss about labeling certain works greater than others? Sheesh. It's not as if you are telling your children you love one of them more than another. There's not a Titian I would not love to own, but I understand the importance of some of his works over others. His 'Portrait of an English Gentleman' was such a joy to see in person!!!! That beautiful creation cannot be oil paint!!! No way!! No how. I know what paint is, and I've never seen any get together and produce anything like that before! Even amongst the finest jewels, there are finer jewels to marvel. It just is. School of Athens, The Night Hawk, Arnofini's Wedding, A Starry Night, - --gee, some things just stand grand and tall. Without a shred of doubt, Hejira is Joni's masterpiece. Which is not to belie or put down any of her other spectacular accomplishments. Sure there's better singing, playing, inventiveness all over her catalogue, before and after. But this disk, as with Blue, stands because it has a wholeness to it that is supremely universal, is beautifully wraught, and is unquestionably unique in all the world. It is her finest poetry, perfectly realized with remarkable tonal painting. And I stick to my guns, even though I realize at least 2 of the songs are better realized on Shadows and Light, than here. It's not like one has to listen and worship this disk at the expense of others. BSN, TTT, TI get a great deal more 'airplay' from me than anything. But Joni's finest overing of ART to the world WAS Hejira. --Now, if I can only convince her to scrap the assinine next 2 projects, maybe she will give us something to top it.Wouldn't that be grand? And one comment towards the 'innovation' thread... Black Crow is probably Joni's wildest open tuning to date. There is NO precident for that one. What WAS she thinking when she cranked this one up??? Did she 'hear' the chords in her head or stumbled upon them??!!! What could possibly have compelled her?? One topic I would love to hear more about, from her and this great group of people, is HOW these tunings and shapes are generated. I know the early tunings were traditional open tunings. Then she started to 'investigate' making stops inbetween the traditional ones. She speaks of tuning the strings to certain sounds around her. These comments lend a great deal of information regarding her music. Obviously, she is being intuitive about the process, letting her imagination and inner critic follow along a path that is radom play. Still, you simply can't crack eggs and get something as remarkable as Black Crow, can one? Does she hear the chords and finds them, or does she find them and hear the chords??? --if you catch my drift. I'm thinking,"My god, the lady sold her soul to the devil." ...it's the only explanation I can think of, other than she was bombarded by Cosmic Rays. --And we all know what those can do. Did she need filler and Joni just happened to be in the studio or what? Just six words, but what a great set up to a brilliantly written song. I also think it would make a great title for a Joni album. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 22:39:32 -0400 From: "Christopher J. How 'bout "Downtown with my darlin' dimestore theif" or "I've been sittin' up waitin' for my sugar to show" and then of course there's "Look out the left, the captain said..." We are supposed to be a Joni Mitchell community in here. When we joined, there were guidelines that Les had written which include no insults of others. If anyone wants to keep calling out other people in here, quit. That is not what this is about. How do you think Paul or Jim feels when they read this? Does that make you feel more mature because in the cyber world you insulted someone? Do you think Les set this JMDL up for this type of stuff? Does this type of insulting post honor the memory of Wally Breese or pay tribute to Joni? I seldom agree with Paul although he was right on IMHO in that Hitler jokes are simply not funny and in light of Holocaust, not even a question. I have only once briefly met Jim. I cannot claim, as MG can, that either one is my friend other than as regular players in my daily life in the JMDL. They are not my friends, but they are part of this community, and they are human beings, and I will be damned if I will keep silent when someone abuses anyone else in here. You want to call someone out by name: do it in your mind and then shut up. Keep it out of here. This is not what the JMDL is about. This is not what Les works for and Wally died caring about and Jim is keeping going and the rest of us care about. Paul, Jim: I am sorry that this happened. I am not designed to keep silent when I see this type of abuse of others. If there is any doubt about Ms. Mitchell's credentials as a jazz artist, I suggest we all listen to "Conversation" again. In the midst of primarily a folk album, even this song, with that ever so sweet voice, becomes a jazz song by the end- perhaps a glimpse of what was to come. Remember, this was 1967!!! I am amazed that I can still listen to albums/music that is 20-30 years old, and how remarkably well it holds up. Takes me back to my youth, and remembering my parents listening to music which at the time seemed SO old fashioned- about the same vintage! Yet, ours, somehow, doesn't seem so old! "She removes him like a ring......" Here's a thought- if it already hasn't been discussed- artists/musicians we would like to hear Ms. Mitchell collaborate with- In the absence of Jaco, I nominate Charlie Haden- his work w/Pat Metheny is subline-"under the Misssouri Sky". Since she has already done Pat Metheny- so far ahead of it's time- perhaps John Abercrombie Too bad that Miles is gone, because I think that could have been an incredible melding of artistic minds.... Thoughts anyone? He must be flexing those therapist-in-training muscles :-) > Hmmm...dark secrets? Angels don't have any of those :~) Hahahahahahaha..... Since I'm no angel, I have a few: 1. I love seeing the sun rise, but enjoy it most after being up all night engaged in conversation and other types of creation. 2. I'm sure that Gabriel Byrne is the sexiest man alive. 3. I've always been a literary slut. Whatever anyone suggests I read, I get, so often that I have an excellent library with too many unopened books in it. Where's the time? 4. I'm learning to be a music slut too. Whatever anyone suggests I listen to, I get..... 5. The idea of owning a big huge couch feels oppressive. My gypsy attitude dislikes owning such a material burden, although packing the books and cds wouldn't be easy, so go figure. (Odd symbol of middle-class oppression I know, but hey I'm keeping it.) 6. I talk to Matisse often -- oh yeah, I know he's not here, but he's still my mentor. Can't hear his responses very clearly though.... or if I did would that be too dark a secret to admit even here? I'm not tellin' 7. I started Moby Dick three different times, and got through the Queequeg and the idol and the tatoos but each time got so annoyed with the self-conscious narrator I never got much further. I always try again after I hear about someone reading that book over and over, so I get inspired and then wipe out again. How do they read that stuff I wonder. 8. I take my literary experiences way too seriously I'm told. 9. I absolutely hate the song Talk to Me. I always want to say Joni, Joni, Joni, just move on will ya. Your begging is bugging me. 10. I'm starting to love Richard Thompson even more than I love Joni, uh oh. I may be asking forgiveness from someone for this one :-) Debra Shea ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #479 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
