Subject: lyrics / media quotes How about: You settle for less than fascination A few drinks later You're not so choosy Marilyn Oh, Marilyn, that's one of my favorites! I was just quoting to someone last week. I swear! Another favorite from C&S (which is full of them) is: Me in my frightened silence Thinkin' I don't understand On another thread from a week or so ago (or longer - I'm playing catch up on the list!), there was an episode of Thirty Something (which is on my list of great TV, up there with Northern Exposure and My So Called Life, even if a lot of people thought is was a yuppie indulgence, it was wonderful to see characters who actually engage in thought on the tube) where Ellen was talking to her shrink about being over the hill and mate-less and begins quoting: I wanna knit you a sweater I wanna write you a love letter I wanna make you feel better I wanna make you feel free It was so lifelike to have a character spouting song lyrics. You almost never see that in TV and movies. And it happened to be a lyric I knew and loved. I'd love to have that on tape. It seemed that the song was absolutely perfect for the theme of the episode, though it's fading from memory. I remember another time where they used "I Wish I Had a River" (you purists will have to forgive me if I have titles wrong - many of the songs I have on tapes made by myself or friends when vinyl was dying and I couldn't afford CDs, so I didn't have covers and liner notes to pore over) in the same series for a Christmas episode. As I recall it was a rather maudlin episode, and again, the song choice was beautifully matched. David Bowie - been a fan for years, and he's a very interesting bloke Joni - having met her briefly, I'd love to make her acquaintance properly John Sayles - America's greatest living film-maker (and a bit of a liberal leftie, like me!) Jane Campion - not all her films have been unqualified successes, but I still think the woman is a genius. I'd love to know what makes her tick creatively Stephen Fry - The Greatest Living Englishman? He's certainly a contender, as well as being a true polymath, a great writer and a Very Funny Man Kate Winslet - well, a guy can dream. Utterly, utterly gorgeous! Janet Frame - One of the greatest writers around - and what an amazing life she's led. The reason that the taxpayers of Hamilton County decided to put up public funds to help an entertainment company? It didn't have enough sky boxes. SHEESH! But like I said, I'm the only one who doesn't get it. That new football stadium is just finished. Too bad no one was watching the contractors and the thing is millions and millions over budget. Good thing no one was actually made RESPONSIBLE for the budget- this way not one single bureauacrat will lose their job! What a relief! For a split second I thought that Government was going to be held accountable for its actions! Oh, I almost forgot- they also voted to help the baseball entertainment company build a new stadium. Why? Because the football entertainment company got one! That plus they wanted something that looked old fashioned. Not 60s old fashioned- the old concrete swoop of Riverfront is the Wrong kind of old-fashioned. They wanted the Right kind of old-fashioned facility to deliver their product- a brick stadium. Arrghhhh! As if someone's going to say, "Hey Joan, why don't we take in a Reds game? After all, the brick entertainment facility is SO much more asthetically pleasing than the out-moded concrete entertainment facility. There are a lot of musicians on the list, many of whom play (ie perform) Joni songs. So which of her songs do people enjoy doing most? And why? My top three are: 1 Hejira. I love all the chords on this song in Joni's tuning. Particularly, the two chords in the breaks between verses always make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The semitone interval between the fourth and third strings on the guitar in the first chord that jjjjanglless, followed by that wonderful unison on the same two strings in the next chord. 2 Coyote. I get carried away with all the dynamics you can put into the right hand on this one. Lots of syncopation, lots of variety you can put into it. Great fun. 3 Just like This Train. The chords again. So big and rich. You may notice that I haven't said anything about singing her songs. I usually find it impossible to sing AND play Joni's music at the same time. The rhythms cross each other too much for me to cope with! When I'm in the bath I love belting out Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. It travels up and down the scale so elastically. Tijuana Brass, Strauss Waltzes, Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Actually, these were all my mum's choices. Hi Azeem, Great idea for a thread. I haven't seen any of Big Brother either, which is tantamount to social suicide, it seems. I'm just not interested! Well, what terrible revelations can I share with my fellow JMDL-ers? 1) I own every Kylie Minogue CD. 2) Despite what everyone says about her, I still feel a great affinity with Geri Halliwell. Reading her book only enhanced this. That she lives just 15 minutes from me makes it even more tantalising. Maybe it'll pass but I doubt it. 3) I have those Buffy The Vampire Slayer action figures ;-) 4) I have never seen Casblanca, Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, Lawrence of Arabia...or several (make that most) other *classics* - my reputation as a movie critic is now in tatters ;o) 5) I think Lindsay Davenport is kinda cute ...well, that's probably MORE than enough for now! When Joni began touring in '98 and introduced the song as "hedge-ear-rah" that prononunciation was confirmed - or possibly even prior to '98 on an audio interview. I've met others who pronounced it "hedge-eye-rah" as well - AND, according to Webster's dictionary, both pronunciations are valid. But what matters most, I suppose, is how Joni pronounces it, since its her song/album. Not so sure it's a Brit/Yank thing. I prononced it "hedge-eye-rah" because to my eyes, that's how it seemed like it should be pronounced. And while I've met others who erroneously pronounced it as I did for many years, I also met many from the list here in the US who always pronounced it the "right" way...
