I can't tell how many times that phrase has gotten me through rough times. It gives us permission to be sad and move on with our lives. Great topic!! Thanks for starting this thread >> This line of hers brings me back (maybe a little too far for some to remember?) to Marilyn's (?) post about the Enneagram and Joni. I have found the Enneagram to be very, very interesting as far as having a greater understanding of the people in my life, and myself in particular. One aspect of *4's*, which Marilyn (?) mentioned that Joni is definitely one, is that they are very sensitive and feel emotions deeply. They also have melancholy periods every once and a while, which is *very* much part of who they are. I think it is extremely interesting if you delve a bit into the *4* personality, and link it to Joni's lyrics. *4's* MUST have their feelings, their melancholy, and most of all, must be accepted for them. It is an integral part of the *4* make-up. The above lyric is only one of many of Joni's that show us some insight into her personality. I would really love to see the paper that you wrote about Joni and the Enneagram. I was traveling when I read the post, so I am relying heavily on my memory which is right now full of organizational Jonifest stuff!! 13 more days!!!!!!!! Hugs, Ashara www.photon.net/lightnet ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 09:09:51 -0500 From: James Leahy Subject: Amelia In 1981 I was studying acting at HB Studio in New York. I was living at the West Side Y. Feeling kind of lonely sitting in my little room so far from my hometown of Toronto, to keep myself sane, I bought a Walkman (which were just becoming the big fad back then) and a couple of tapes - -- Hejira and Shadows and Light. I would listen to Hejira all the time, up and down the subways, alone in my room, walking down Columbus Avenue. Whenever Amelia came on, I would break down in tears over the lines "A ghost of aviation, she was swallowed by the sky, or by the sea; like me, she had a dream to fly." Being an analytical kind of guy, I wanted to know why it affected me so much. One of my courses at HB was a song workshop, taught by the composer Carol Hall, a lovely Texas woman who had written the Streisand song "Jenny Rebecca" as well as the songs/lyrics to Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It was an experimental class. Carol invited people to get up and sing a song. Then she would deconstruct the song -- asking other students to come up and play a role in the song or assembling prop furniture to set up a dramatic scene built around the song. It was all improvised and spontaneous. Some of the results were truly amazing and hilarious as the song's meaning kept getting richer and richer. I decided to sing Amelia in class. I bought the songbook so that the in-class pianist could accompany me. I think the lyrics had affected me so much because of the parallels between my life and my mother's life. My mother had left my father when I was about 6 and never came back. My father raised my sister and me. I later heard that my mother had taken up a singing career under the name Shirley Scott and was doing gigs around Europe. There in New York, I guess I was doing the same thing she was doing: living out a "dream to fly," to find myself and express it through music/art. The song went well in class. I was terrified because it's such a lonnnngg song! I replicated my YMCA room in the classroom studio. Lying on my bed, my guitar by my side, I composed a letter to my long-lost mother, which took the form of the lyrics to Amelia. The piano player struggled to play the song, which he had never heard before -- but we both kept it flowing! The class seemed quite stunned after I sang. Carol was quite complimentary -- to me and to Joni! She said I had a lot of things going for me, including my "intensity." But she said I needed to open up theatrically and sing the song out to the audience more. She suggested that perhaps I do the song again at another class, this time with someone playing Amelia/my mother. I also got a lot of compliments from people in the class, who said later that I had really communicated the lyrics. What really impresses as I look back, is that I actually had the nerve to do this -- to explore a song to that depth and do it in front of a classroom full of aspiring actors. I no longer sing or perform in public. I do play Joni songs all the time on my guitar, but now lack the guts to do it in public. By the way, my mother and I were reunited a few years ago (another parallel to Joni). She gave me a rehearsal tape of her singing with a small jazz group back in the early 60s. God, she was good. I had it duplicated onto cassettes, designed a cover for it, and gave it to family members as a Christmas present. She told me that she had given up singing because she found showbiz too sleazy. Also, the man she was living with was getting jealous of all the attention showered on her. I don't usually post such long e-mails, but something about the Amelia thread got me reminiscing. It reminds me how Joni played such an important part in my life -- she was my creative muse -- and how women in general -- my mother, the teacher at HB, Amelia herself -- have been so inspiring. I've been thinking about it daily since you gave us the short version recently. My first impulse was to print it out for my brother, Mark. When I was in high school, in 1969, I was reading every word in every issue of Rolling Stone. Mark and I shared a room in the basement. I shared many, many of the wonderful stories of the age with him. ****************** Recently, I told him the following story about Bill Graham. According to his bio, Bill had a policy about only presenting artists with recording contracts as headliners. Bill was also among the first to run rock shows as a business. He ran afoul of the Dead for example, because Bill insisted on charging everybody in the Dead experience admission. This was shocking at the time. Only the light show guys and the sound guys and maybe girlfriends were exempt. All the friends of the band had to pay. When Clapton came, a very, very poor local guitarist begged, I mean BEGGED, Bill for free admission. He wanted to sit at the feet of the Master and Learn. I mean he was stoked. So Bill stretched his own rule for this local guitarist and his conga player. Later, this same guitarist broke another barrier at Bill's club. Carlos Santana was his first headliner who didn't have a contract. **************** I love that story. I love, love, love that story. When I told it to Mark, he said, "Yeah, well? So? I knew it was Santana." Like he thought I was trying to stump him with a riddle. And the riddle was too easy. And what's the point of telling an easy riddle? Clearly Mark doesn't GET IT. Needless to say, I'm rejecting my first impulse to send your story, your perfect GEM of a story, to my brother. Nobody in my life understands cool stuff like this except JMDLers. I wuv you guys. Thanks. Did loads of different patterns on the pc and transferred it to print matter then fed the sheets into the console. Wouldn't work. Tried every which way. Started to get upset. Phoned the Swiss makers. No joy. Send them the pattern and they would see if they can replicate my problem. Phoned the people who I bought it from. Same. Wrote to E6000 list. No joy. Finally, I decided the console was buggered and that it would go straight back from whence it came and I went and sat and watched tv before I threw the whole thoing out of the window. I love, love, love that story. I recently played the banter before "Circle Game" from 10/28/70 for my friends who are huge Neil Young fans... they were both pleasantly surprised to find out someone had written a song about him:) One of them made the comment that her voice sounded like an angel during "River", the hair on his neck stood up when she hit the high notes of fllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I found that rather ammusing:) Take Care, Lance Parauka - ------------------------------------------------------------ http://byke.com - Free email, BMX links, Music, Art & Culture and much more ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 08:56:25 +1000 From: john low Subject: Strange Symbols NJC Many thanks, Ranger Rick, for explaining the mystery of the symbols. Yesterday morning three of us Sydney JMDLers (Ange, Nicholas & myself) had a long, enjoyable and relaxed morning tea with her and her three boys. It was a great pleasure to meet her – amazing how the Joni ‘common ground’ allows us to meet as if we were old friends! This is truly a world-wide ‘community’ with no ‘borderlines’. As well as talking about her trip and discussing various Joni related matters, we heard all about the plans for the forthcoming Joni-fest. All I can say is that those of you lucky enough to be going are in for a real treat (but I guess you know that already). I wish we weren’t so far away!! John (in Sydney). LOL, Thank you for the archives Les!!! I'm sure after I see Ashara for Labor day, I'll be posting what a great time I had too :~) Jimmy, who hopes John forgives him :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 19:23:41 EDT From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: David Crosby "Stand and be Counted" Documentary Tonight!
