It was the first time I attended this event and was not sure what to expect, but it was really well done. The stage was set up in a beautiful wooded area and we saw several flocks of geese fly overhead throughout the night. The only weird thing was our funky little zoo train going by every 15 minutes or so, but we were able to ignore it after while. Since this is the first time I've heard CPR's music, I can't include song titles, but I enjoyed it very much. David's son has a nice voice, but it seemed a little weak at times when he was singing on his own. It blended well with the other 2 though. (At the end when David introduced him he said, "As you know we're related. My luck, his problem." :>) It was really a nice, intimate concert. David seemed very at ease and chatted a lot with the audience. Of course they were yelling CSN and Byrds song titles, but were a good audience for the new material. CPR did treat us to "Long Time Gone" and "Eight Miles High." The latter was nice, but better when CSN&Y did it on tour this year. They also did "Deja Vu" with Jim Raymond doing a piano solo and Jeff Pevar, a guitar solo. Finally, as we were leaving, they did "Almost Cut My Hair" for an encore. It sounded great to me, but not sure how the resident reindeer felt. (They were nearest the stage.) The poor things looked like they had insomnia! It was a beautiful night and I'm definitely going to the record store soon to purchase some CPR! He was wearing all black but had on a red shirt with black polka dots...I thought he looked like a giant lady bug. He kept pulling all these different songs out of his hat. I particularly enjoyed his rendition of "Hoochie Coochie Man". Not long after, the BBKing blues band came out and did several songs by themselves before BB King finally came out and sat in a chair near the front of the stage and they handed him his guitar. He joked about being 74 and having to sit in a chair but he sure can play mighty fine stuff. We listened to several of his songs then took off to beat the crowd. A perfect evening, just popping by to hear some blues for awhile. I love the blues! Victor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 10:19:26 -0700 From: "P. I think that Joni uses the biblical references to equate herself with Mary Magdalene as a whore being pimped by the record industry. "Magdalene is trembling like a washing on a line, trembling and gleaming." "All around the market place, the buzzing of the flies. The buzzing and the stinging... Divinely barren (of a recent hit record?) and wickedly wise, The killer nails are ringing" (Think "For The Roses") I don't think that we have to look much further sometimes than exactly what she says. I think that this song simply illuminates a revelation she had in respect to her control of her own career. Who, or what precipitated it, I couldn't say. If Joni was referring to Jesus in the line"But he sees a stray in the wilderness, And I see how far I've wandered" it would be "But He sees a stray..." so I view the biblical references as powerfully allegorical. The fact that the song is on NRH, an album hailed as "a return to form" and " sonically pared down" indicates some catharsis in her creative process within this period. She began to show her paintings the year it was released, too (see "Diary of a Decade"). This being said, I think the song is for me, among her very best. CC "She always misses. To my knowledge, they are in fact real. I mentioned the other day that Joni had put together a book of art and poetry called "Morning Glory On The Vine" around 70/71, and distributed copies to her friends only, probably as Christmas gifts. Wally B. sent me a color copy of a page from it for a B-Day a few years back, and he apparently paid one of the above mentioned girls a large sum of $ for her copy. Wally didn't like to talk about this sort of thing much, this scenario in particular, because he didn't want to embarress said individual, but also because, like most of us, he would rather trade for his wordly possessions. Apparently, this paticular 'canyon lady' was busy trying to record a musical effort of her own, and needed money to finance her project. This is the only proof I have, however flimsy, but Wally wasn't one to tell tall stories about 'serious' matters. I just wanted to tell my experience with Joni's music. The first song I ever heard Joni sing was "For Free." I was in high school and Ladies of the Canyon had been out long enough for sheet music to be available. I had never had a piano lesson, but I obtained the sheet music and managed to learn how to play "For Free" by carefully counting up and down from "middle C." It was the first song I ever played on the piano. But I didn't stop there. It wasn't long before I learned chords on the piano and was improvising, arranging and composing--all in the Joni idium! (Of course, there were other influences--Elton John and Jimmy Webb.) To this day, I still enjoy sitting down at the keyboard and doodling something--and invariably, one can hear a "Joniism." Anyway, through the years I have remained a fan of Joni Mitchell, my favorite albums being "Blue," "For the Roses" and "Hijira." It's pretty neat, has some good commentary and also includes a second choice selection. In addition to some of the "greats" there are also a number of more obscure (at least to me) selections such as Tortoise, Tricky Head; Neu!; Joy Division. The picks are not necessarily predictable: Some of the list faves chosen: Joni - Hissing of Summer Lawns; 2nd: Hejira Van Morrison - Astral Weeks; 2nd: Night in San Francisco PJ Harvey - Dry; 2nd: To Bring You My Love Jane Siberry - When I Was A Boy; 2nd: Bound By The Beauty Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic; 2nd: Can't Buy A Thrill Nick Drake - Bryter Later; 2nd: Pink Moon Love - Forever Changes; 2nd: Da Capo Bjork - Debut; 2nd: Post Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced; 2nd: Bold as Love Prince - Sign O The Times; 2nd: Purple Rain Tom Waits - Rain Dogs; 2nd: Swordfishtrombones Neil Young - Tonight's the Night; 2nd: Arc/Weld Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 22:58:02 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Stills and the Malibu Sheriffs (NJC) I really love this story. Reminds me of summer nights in my youth when someone would sneak out their parents' car and a bunch of us would cruise up to Malibu. Sorry we didn't catch this gig! ;-) To add to Helen's info - from the CSN biography, copyright 2000, D. Zimmer and H. Diltz, page 50: Stills, Hendrix and drummer Buddy Miles all ended up at a beach house in Malibu, which the Springfield had just rented. Stephen re-creates the scene: "I set up my big amps, we took some acid and just went. We played literally for twenty straight hours. We must have made up fifty songs. But there was no tape recorder running, no nothing. We just played for the ocean. Bruce Palmer eventually showed up, and a little while later, so did the sheriffs. They came to the door and asked, "What's the deal?" And I said, "Did you get a call?" "No", they said. "We were just curious about who was playing." I told them " Well, there's a guy from Chicago and a guy from Seattle and we're just playing blues and stuff. And they said "Oh yeah? Well, I know what you're thinking, but would it be okay if we parked across the street and listened?" I shrugged. So the guy said "Don't get paranoid because we're out there. We don't care what you're doing. We just want to listen. And if one of our sergeants shows up, someone will sound a siren, which means just cool it for a few minutes." So me and Hendrix jammed with the sheriff's protection. And that night I really started to learn how to play lead guitar.
